It's finally finished, my Inquisitor scale vanguard. Thunderhammer and jump pack are scratchbuilt (with a few obvious small bits added), boltpistol has gotten heavy work on it, based on a ravenwing heavybolter if I don't remember wrong. Shoulderpads have been extensively worked on, one purity seal is from greenstuff while the other is from plastic 40k bits.

I had him on a different base until late last night, the base was the only thing left to paint and after a long time of trying to get it to look like I wanted I gave up in frustration since it was really starting to bug me. I went back to basics and put him on a fresh base that I sanded and painted like my regular 28mm marines, which I'm really happy I did.

Enjoy, C&C welcome.

On a boat, Trying not to die.

The only complaint I have is that the primary jet on the backpack seems oversized.

Other than that, great job! How did you make the Thunderhammer?

You can find some WiP pics here. The thunderhammer was made with plasticard, plastic rod, greenstuff and some small 40k bits, plus guitar string for the powercable.

Primary jet looks about right to me... only thanks to the Sanguinary Guard equivalent, though. I absolutely love it! And now I want one to do as a Blood Angel. Curse you...

Thanks for the replies.

The jump pack was built with just doubled up 28mm scale measurements, much easier numbers than scaling "properly". Measurements of the finished model show that the main jet is actually the most to scale, only being off by about 6%. Some other parts of the jump pack are 10-15% out of scale, but you have to remember even then it's only an extra millimeter or two.

I think the main reason it may look out of scale is that 54mm figures are more "realistic" than 28mm, they appear tall and sleek in comparison.

I'm very happy with it though and plan on doing more vanguards in that scale, with other style jump packs and weapons.

This looks really nice, you really nailed it.

About the jump pack, i think it looks right in scale, 40k scale marines are off in scale anyway.

Guys, the lack of comments about my model are really bothering me. Did I really do that bad of a job? Or did I simply not do a job worth commenting on?

It really bothers me that some threads on here get tons of replies, while the stuff I work my ass off on gets no attention whatsoever.

So bump, for the greater good!

Not a fan of the colors but love the modeling. I didn't think Dark angels had vanguards in the dex?

It's a great piece - what chapter, though??

How many replies a piece gets is not just to do with how good the modelling is - it's to do with it's interest level at the time you post. I imagine, right now, Necron armies get a lot more posts than they did a couple of yers ago, because more people collect them. Unfortunately, not many people play Inquisitor or build 54mm models, which is probably why there aren't many comments.

Lovely model, though...

The chapter is my custom vanilla marines, Intrepid Eagles. I use some DA symbols cause of the wingy bits & sword combo. Have always played them as vanilla marines though, seeing as I started collecting them over 10 years ago, playing modified 2nd ed.

I suppose the studded shoulderpad is generally "supposed to" be on the left shoulder however I keep my chapter emblem on the left cause I use one of the ravenwing shoulderpads as my chapterpad (started with that when I stumbled on their plastic pads on a bits site some years back), and stick whatever fancy pad on the right shoulder, for vets and characters. Then again, there's at least one picture in the vanilla codex of a marine with a studded pad on the right shoulder.

Infantry & dreads are painted with storm blue, which has been OOP for eons, vehicles are painted with midnight blue, as to conserve my storm blue stockpile.

I love Storm Blue so much. It was one of the two primary colors on my first army. Still conserving a couple of pots.

Is that bolt pistol wrist-mounted? Whatever, I like the look of it.

The chapter insignia on the shoulder pad really stands out - how did you make it, if you don't mind my asking?

I sympathise about the lack of comments, amigo!

Yay, someone who shares my love of Storm Blue! I was in real fear of having to wrap up my marine ranks and start something else when I started to run low on Storm Blue, but then thanks to a friend I hit the jackpot when I found a small local used games shop that had 6 pots left. Rebottled the paints into old 2nd edition bottles with really tight lids... my preciousssss

Thanks, I feel a little less alone now

Yep, when the plastic sanguinary guard pack hit the shelves I started using their angelus boltguns as wristmounted boltpistols for my vanguards. Purely for looks. Started nabbing their jump packs as well, minus the wings.

For the chapter insignia I made a singleside pressmold of an emblem on a short rod, I think they're backpack icons for 28mm guys. Used greenstuff to duplicate it, then thinned it down to where it was bendy enough to glue down onto the shoulderpad. Looks just like the ravenwing shoulderpads I have on my small guys, so really happy with that part.

Thanks for the comments.

Yeah, as mentioned the base is like that for sentimental reasons, I'm a real sucker for sentimentality.

I'm working on vanguard #2 right now, updates will be posted in a separate thread.

I am very impressed. The hammer and jump pack look very well scaled and proportioned, something that people often fail at when scratch building, particularly in 54mm.

It's wonderful and that jetpack is excellent. The main criticism I have is the base.
There should be something to show that the marine is making contact with the ground as you've shown dirt on the soles of his boots. There are no footprints in the ground, no sign the ground has been disturbed at all. At that scale it's very noticeable, particularly in the absence of anything else on the base.
You might also want to think about some kind of heat effect on the exhausts, they look too clean for working thrusters.
