Yesterday ArbitorIan and I discussed my terrible hobby butterflying... I have a lot of unfinished projects.

Chaos blight drones and landraiders, 30man terminator plaguewing.... 'nids, Eldar, Space Wolfs.... a dungeon bowl, starwars turrets... imperial roads.... so many more...
I thought I should do something about this... and I will.

But not today.
Today I'm gonna paint the two 40k FW realm of battle boards I bought at salute this year... I'm gonna try and get these done quick?
not sure how quick yet...

Round 1 Ready!

during this cleaning I sliced my finger on the bottom edges.
I realised they are quite sharp all the way around the underside where they seem to have been trimmed / cleaned up at Forge world.. removing excess material ??.
I spent twenty minutes sanding these down with fine sand paper to take the edge off it.

All clean and dry now... Next up paint!

Oh I can totally relate on the butterflying, it's something I'm currently working on overcoming myself.

Looking forward to seeing how the boards turn out, always fun painting a wreck, especially if you paint it pristinely and then weather it up from there.

I'm not planning on spending too much time on it... i kinda have a rule that terrain should be painted quick and dirty.

quick update with the basecoat spray painted.
I'm usng army builder uniform grey and (space) wolf grey sprays.


and the mud painted with citadel brown.



Washed with Vallejo black wash.
the mud of the compound was painted with a make it up as I went mix of forge world dark earth powder and Vallejo black wash...

Round 2 - Fight!

Today I got the Realm Of Battle Imperial Strongpoint fully base coated and weathered.
Weathering was done with modelmates spray 'brown oil' followed by modelmates paint on rust effects.

Before weathering.


After spray on oil brown...
I sprayed on the brown oil, then removed large ammounts with a wet tissue till the effect was better.


Then I then painted on rust effects...


The brown oil effects have made the board a bit shiney so I'll use a matt spray to seal the board and hopefully dull it down.

Tomorrow I need to finish highlights/pick out some details and then flock the board.
And get a move on to the thunder hawk!

I rushed and got it completed and varnished tonight. Game tomorrow, Huzzah!

Flocking.
I flocked ontop of two boards taped together. (the green boards taped together with brown tape)
Once the glue has had time to dry I flip the board over holding it above the two boards and tap the tile firmly.
The loose unstuck flock falls onto the collection boards and can be funnelled back into it's container and reused.

You can see my funnelling technique reclaiming green flock in this forest making article.






Imperial Strong Point is now Game Ready and it was done fairly quickly!
Hopefully I'll get some nice photos during the game with ArbitorIan tomorrow.
Thunderhawk may take a while as I have work this weekend.

But disaster has struck!!!
Dispite cleaning the board with soap, i didn't get all the release agent off and some parts are peeling...

This is a real pain in the ass... I'll save what i can with PVA glue and then fix up the damage.
Shouldn't be too bad... just really really annoying since I washed the board before I started...

I recommend that any one else painting one of these double washes and roughs up the flat areas with sand paper prior to priming.

Some brilliant work, and a shame about the peling! In the pics it looks like it could double as battle damage though, maybe you can save yourself some work that way?

yeah,
I covered the board in PVA glue and scraped off the flaky bits.
Lots of repainting to do :(


I did a bit more on the thunderhawk.
to try and make a more solid base coat and hopefully not have a repeat flaky incident, I coated it in two coats of satin varnish and then a coat of matt....
and did a little bit of work on the hull.

Air brushed on a chevron and then got a bit carried away with air bruching on a smoke effect...
I think i should have painted on more marking logos before i did the black... might go back and do the chapter logos anyway.

metal paint done. next I need to pick out the interior details and then weather everything again...

I like your thinking! I should have painted it like ArbitorIans white scars...

I figured if I have spacewolfs and paint it in their colours I can do rescue or retrieve the cargo missions.
Plus it was good practice for painting space wolf tanks...

I got more painting done today.


Tomorrow I'll finish up and get the flock on it.

I got the Thawk done Yesterday, I kinda wished I had one that hadn't crashed!

This is how I pile the flock onto the pva areas and then reclaim the flock that doesn't touch glue.



And here she is in all her crashed ( /over flocked and /over smoke weathered) glory.


1 layer of gloss varnish 2 layers of satin varnish 2 layers of matt varnish. and she's game ready.

I turned it after a few photos and think it looks beter coming in from the edge.
Tactically it's a bit of a board divider! so it might be best pushed to the corner.
I've invited ArbitorIan to a game hopefully we will find out soon?


No sign of the peeling problems (so far, touch wood) that I had with the Imperial StrongPoint, either I cleaned it better or the strong point had more release agent on it.
Which brings me to todays sad story.

Although I understand why the paint peeled the board was still remarkably oily.. not sure how.. but it was.

Wow dude that Thunderhawk is brilliant! looks fantastic how you did it, you could always airbrush some scorch marks over the grass flock to remedy your 'over flocking' :-) but it still looks great as is! I really like the strongpoint too, you have an amazing table set up.

Thanks, and that's a great idea about scorched grass that I'll give that a try, if I can build up the confidence to try it !!

So today I've reversed my holdings. I'm up one completed dead thunder hawk and down one strong point... bugger.

I dettol'd the Imperial Strong Point in a large plastic container.
I managed to remove about 98% of paint.

I think I'l have another go at the final 2% another day before I start again!

Thanks to not prop for the heads up about not mixing water with your detol! keep it separate!
I reclaimed about 80% of my now murky dettol I believe it's good to strip loads more stuff!

only get water nvolved when your washing off what your not reclaiming that stuff gets mega sticky once it contacts water!

That's a spectacular piece of scenery. You've really done it justice with your paint job.

Sorry to see the problem with the Strong Point it was looking pretty sweet. Don't park it though get back on it or the getting stuff done quick vibe might leave you and you'll not get this great piece back on the table for some time (I know I'm like that anyway ).

RE reusing murky Dettol, honestly I wouldn't mate. The pain of having gummy paint far out strips the cost of buying more dettol, I saw some at a pound shop the other day for example. If it isn't clear, just chuck it I say.

Fairy Power Spray is a much better option. Spray on, and scrub gently fifteen minutes later. The longer you leave, the less scrubbing. Leave it a couple of days and you can peel the paint off with your fingers.
