Nothing to report, really. Wedding this weekend, campout next weekend, so probably not a lot of progress, unless I manage to get some work done during the week.

I did, however, manage an epic sprue-clipping session, took down the megabitz bag, a bunch of other sprues. Not really sure how I keep ending up with mariine tac quad sprues. It is like the 'free pen' giveaway of the GW universe, I swear.

Sigh.

I have three or four more boxes of random bitz to deal with, as well as a pile of "Vehicle" sprues that I've been cannibalizing for the Ordinatus project. Lots of leftover superheavy stuff, as well as some Chimera and Rhino chassii. That'll be clipped and shoved into a box for terrain and/or 6th edition work.

A paper napkin calculation on what it'll take to revive the Valks tells me that I'll be spending about $30. So, $70 for three Valks. I can handle that.

I have some wings coming in to finish my Tau Air Caste Devilfish/Skyray conversion, so I'm going to finish my Earth Caste Hammerhead, and the Devilfish, along with rusting and decaling the Deathstrike. This will clear the decks for practicing with the Airbrush Galorn lent me, so I can attack the Ordinatus properly.

After the Ordinatus, I expect to sink stupid cash on 6th edition, so I can get the rules (hurry up, ebay sellers, so we can get whatever 6th ed mini rulebooks get put out). Then, it'll be AIR FORCE TIME, since I will have 4 Valk/Vend, 2 Stormravens, 2 Stormtalons, and 3 Ork Jets. Note: I'm dumping my Necrons, so did not pruchase any Necron flyers.

Now that I've got things sorted, I expect to do some heavy eBay work to balance out/focus my desires vis a vis 40K. I find myself shifting to a "Skirmish" mindset, and definitely planted in the CASUAL side of the main 40K hobby. With the prices increases across the board, I'll be salvaging everything I currently own before considering any new purchases...and new purchases will be done through eBay and/or sellers that can provide me with a minimum 25% discount.

My next major equipment purchase will be a large ultrasonic cleaner, so I can go through a pile of 2nd edition stuff, get it cleaned up, and resold on eBay or used as terrain.

And that's the state of the Brian.

You looking to offload any of your superheavy bitz? I might be interested.

What's up with 6th edition? I was told that GW would have it out BEFORE Games Day US, but White Dwarf hasn't even had a hint about it?

no...that cannot be the release date- That must be the day it is announced (white dwarf day). It just doesn't fit into GW's pre-release gig.

I agree, the announcement date has to be 06/23, there's no way they would drop such a massive bomb from orbit w/o a million advance emails, WD articles, Newletter updates, and of course their own website.

I don't know, but I was in the shop last week and one of the staffers was hinting pretty seriously. They allready aren't allowed to sell any more of the old rulebook. That doesn't mesh with the GW "milk them for all they've got" policy unless the new edition is right around the corner...

^QFT, this is a bigger money spinner than stringing us along for months on end with snippets that they leak but say they don't leak...

anywho, 6th ed. is the summer release... any later than the end of June and they will be losing out on the holiday money rush they always without fail have.

Not much painting progress made, but a lot of ORGANIZATIONAL progress made.

I have clipped off a MASSIVE amount of sprue. All of my vehicle, terrain, and other bitz are clipped, save for a handful of sprues which will probably be eBay bait (an example: a ton of Dark Angels bitz).

I have gone from sprues stacked all over the place to one box, containing boxes holding bitz, which are labelled. And I've started filling up my new storage bin, which needs to be labelled. Finally, I'm starting my eBay pile.

I have a metric ton of Dark Angels stuff, some of which is painted. Poorly. I think I need to pivot around an axis, and get all of that DA stuff in shape for eBay. I have all the special characters, etc. If I do a stripping run, I'll be ready for the 6th Ed codex and starter set, which features DA. Since my Marine Codex is Minotaurs, I don't intend to re-start a DA army.

Anyways, these are the thoughts in my head.

--B.

PS: I need one of those electric garden chippers, so I can BRRRRAAAWWWWWWWWW through these massive piles of sprues I want to turn into sprue bricks.

I've heard meat grinders or blenders work for this, ever tried it? I don't want to kill my blender or my hands but rubble sprue bricks is a really good idea.

I'm not stuck, but thanks!

So, let's talk about plastic canopies. Most people paint them over, because they don't want to paint the interior details, and pilots. I, as you may be aware, am not that kind of people.

So, when you deal with canopies, let's talk some basics:

1) Clear plastic will "craze" if you even look at it the wrong way. Craze is the term for when clear plastic fogs up.
2) Do not use plastic cement or crazy glue! Both of these will screw up your canopies. Just don't.
3) Do not buy special "Canopy Adhesive". Just don't. Use good old "white" PVA glue. Use it sparingly, apply it with a toothpick.
4) Keep your fingers clean. Residue of plastic or CA cement will craze your canopies, and leave an ugly copy of your fingerprint.

So, with that out of the way, how DO you recover a lost canopy?

Well, you need the following: fine grit sandpaper, ultra fine grit sandpaper, and gloss varnish.

First, a shot of two canopies. One is a 'before', one is 'after'. Yes, the first canopy was also covered in white spray paint AND had the canopy frames. I carefully removed the canopy frames off with a sharp chisel blade. Where the canopy was glued to the frame, I'm not worried about, because I'm gluing the frame back on!

Second is a shot of the canopy after I've sanded it down. Note the two kids of sandpaper, here. the ultrafine grit sandpaper feels like a slightly rough sheet of paper.

Note that it still looks frosted. That's because the plastic is still rough, and there's microscopic scratches everywhere.

The next step is to apply BRUSH-ON gloss varnish. Water it down a smidge, and use a VERY clean paint and VERY clean water. Brush it on and let it dry. Do not let the varnish pool, use a very clean brush to remove excess gloss varnish.

REMEMBER:

Spray varnish kills plastic canopies! Do NOT attach your canopies to the model, except as the VERY LAST STEP. Note to Eldar Players: Yes, this means you have to build your tanks out of order of the instructions. Sorry. Apply matte finish to your models, THEN assemble the cockpit.canopy area, and mate the upper and lower hulls.

Good luck!
