Video (or is that Giteo ?) is great. I do have a tree in my yard dropping some old limbs like a lepper, so I might get to tackle this sooner rather than later .
More mushrooms. I've decide that I just can't have too many, which is nice as whenever I get the yen for a terrain project I can work on these without spending any money.
Spent the night thinking up an easier way to do them. Have figured out several species... Aminita sp., morels, Russula, boletes, etc. Basically any capped mushroom.. Also sorted out how to do shelf fungi which will be the next project.
When I get it all sorted I'll do a video on the process.

They look so realistic. Awesome!
edit - Blue mushrooms also ? might work i don't know. Just a suggestion
I love those logs. I think the variety of scatter terrain, objectives, etc is what makes a great table, especially for small skirmish games like Bushido.
Again, nice video . I like the spinning table, almost makes me want to raid the LEGO stash for some motor parts and make one for when I never do videos .
Some really nice scatter terrain by Oshiro. My budget got crushed recently which means I’ll be building my own terrain elements for a while, but they have some great pieces to steal ideas from. The oranges you painted look very real and juicy .
Thank you gentlemen. Really appreciate the feedback and support. I'm happy with both the terrain and the fact that the videos seem to be coming easier than before. Talking is getting more natural as the audience has started to become a "person" in my head ... if you get my meaning..
New video is up. This is basically a mycology lecture... but I do scribble a lot on napkins and go for a walk in the woods. The first actual tutorial will be on it's way no later than tomorrow morning. Kinda depends on how long it takes to process the video tonight.
The first of the "real" Micromycotuts is up. We learn how to make and paint Cortinarius violaceus, the "violet web cap" mushroom. This went way long. Going to have to work on that!
I guess this is more of a Macromycotut... *sigh* The rest of them will be MUCH shorter. This is the video that explains the techniquest that we'll be using throughout the rest of the series so it's longer than I anticipated.
@Heretic Tom: They were a lot of fun for my son to put together and for me to paint. I've got 8 more waiting for him to come home from college and assemble for me!
Well, I've been a mushroom building fool. Time I posted some pics. These are all based on real fungi.
Oh yes, there is a long list. Puff balls, cup fungi, maybe even corals if I can figure out how to make them.
Automatically Appended Next Post: New micromycotut is up. Yes, these will go on for a while and then I'll get them out of my system and i'll go back to painting my minis (which is what I should be doing). For the time being though... these are fun. This is also half the length of my last one. I'm hoping to get them down to 10 minutes once I don't have to focus so much on introducing new techniques.
New battle report is up! Don't expect a lot, just a quick summary report of our first game with Risen Sun. 50 points, Ryodo, my Descension vs Ben's Prefecture.
New video is up! The first ever channel give-a-way to celebrate 150 subscribers. Thank you all for your support of an old fart trying to do something useful on these new-fangled internets. It's been a lot of fun for me and I hope to bring you a lot more interesting and entertaining videos in the future!
Drawing for the fabulous prize is next Saturday. (18th I think)
On the hobby side, I just finished building the "dog pack" for my Savage Wave war band (that's the red demon guys). I'm really, really excited about these models. Not only painting them but playing them as well. There are 4 dogs plush the alpha (the big one) as well as a special Oni that gives them all buffs (the alpha buffs them too). They're also not very costly point-wise, so in the now standard 100 point tournament list, I have 38 points to play with. At the moment, I'm thinking of taking the two small oni (actually onisho) that I've painted already... leaving me 5 points for gear and upgrades.
I've decided to paint them up like Riddick's jackal from the movie "Riddick". The ears aren't right on the models, but while I could custom build the ears... I just don't think it's worth the effort. Maybe on the alpha, we'll see.
In other news, Ben at Master Crafted Miniatures was kind enough to throw in a bunch of miscast bits with my last order. While I'll be using a lot of it as-is on my Oni bases (to represent them tearing through a temple), I was able to cobble together some of the bits Dr. Frankenstein-like and come up with a number of serviceable pieces... most of which will get painted and tossed into the "for Adepticon" pile of resources or given to new players to help get them started. The wall section and the little dudes I'm going to hang on to though... because they're especially cool. Thanks Ben.
New video is up! MicroMycoTut #5... Amanito virosa, The Destroying Angel. I got it down to 12 minutes! The next video will be a battle report, I promise!
I thought I'd post a pic for a change. Did a little how-to video on using spray cans like airbrushes, specifically using spray primers to do grey stone. Had this little guy as the subject. It's a spirit statue made by Mastercrafted Miniatures. Nothing fancy here... but a fun little bit of terrain (or objective), whatever you'd like. He's not as speckly to the eye as he appears here. For some reason the lights really make him look like he's got major spatter when that's not the case at all. The gradient looks quite good IRL.
I have hopes of getting some more interesting painting done, but at the moment the combination of low temps and high humidity are keeping me from getting things primed.
Thanks for commenting guys. Really nice to see so many old friends still watch the thread. We had an absolutely wonderful time, even though it took us nearly 5 hours to complete the first turn! Luckily the Eldar are really fast... so turn 1 was filled with combat. Even the Imperials had some fast or deep-striking units that took the battle to the alien scum!
So now the remaining boy is cranked up about 40k again and is pestering me to paint my long-stashed Eldar Iyanden wraith army. Are they legal anymore? I don't really care if they're good, but I would care if I couldn't field them.
You can still field Iyanden wraiths. They're not terrible, but they're not the best either. You're likely gonna want a minimum size battalion of Guardians or Dire Avengers or Rangers to fill out the army though.
You can run a (mostly) pure wraith army, with the only fleshy bits being the seers who lead them. But you are going to be shy on command points, which limits the shenanigans you can get up to. Adding a few warm bodies allows you to use a battalion, which will help fuel the trickery.
Not that you can’t cause a healthy amount of havoc just with seers and psychic powers
We did HT. Looking forward to Brian's next visit... hopefully with slightly less points per person so it takes us less than 5 hours to get through the first turn!
WANTED:
I'm wondering if anyone has a set of plastic wraithguard they're interested in parting with. Ideally new & unassembled... unpainted for sure. I'm looking for two groups of 5.
Also looking for a plastic wraithlord as above.
Lastly looking for Eldar rangers (15).
Thanks to the generosity of a friend of mine, I have nearly everything I need. Just need to snag a bunch of rangers for my troops and I should be good to go!
That Oni is rad, one of my little boys (6yo) came in the room and asked me "is that an Oni?" I was thinking "how the hell does he know that?" lol, he said he knows about them because of Yo-Kai
@HT: LOL! Well, at least it's recognizable. I'll re-build my good camera set-up and take some decent photos of my Savage Wave forces. I think I've hit upon a pretty nice list all things considered, and with a little work will have a very different variant on the theme (bakemono rather than oni).
Well... didn't want you guys thinking I wasn't doing anything at all. I know this isn't the 40k that you really want to see, but the last of the Iyanden figures are trickling in so you need to be a bit patient.
I'm working on the second "Savage Wave" list for Bushido. Both take advantage of my dog pack, an excellent group of 4 dogs plus their "alpha".
The first war-band (at 100 points) is what I call the "Alpha Dogs" (because of the "Alphas" theme it uses). It consists of two Oni (demons/ogres), one of whom is specifically designed to buff the dogs, the other of which just works well with them, the dog pack and a human slave or two.
The second war-band still includes the dogs, but instead of the Oni includes 7 bakemono (think gremlins from the movie of the same name). The bakemono are diminutive but also very interesting and tough in their own way. They have a pack mentality like the dogs thanks to their special theme called "Thousand Eyes", and as such I think they'll make a good compliment. They're also awesome figures... especially the newer characters that I can't wait to paint!
The trick has been that I decided to put them on bases with resin inserts to set them apart from the rest for the faction. However that means cutting off the "slotta-base" bits from the figures and pinning already tiny models onto the bases. I also had to pin most of the arms or they'd be constantly falling off. It also means finishing the bases first, then painting the bottom of the models, then attaching the models to the bases and finishing the painting. I suppose there's an easier way to do this, but I'm committed to this one for the duration of this project.
Thus, here is where the project stands. Bases are done. All pinning is done though the models aren't permanently attached to the bases yet. I can finally start painting! Yay!
Love the Bakemon sculpts, the bases look amazing. They almost look like little statues you would find in the park. A very strange park...
Can't wait to see how they turn out.
Thanks guys. I just ran out and bought two more that it turns out I probably need to make the list work properly. They're much bigger than the others but still fit the theme. Bases are done and the inserts are finally glued into them. Now all I have to do is set aside a little painting time!
Here's the current progress on my bakemono. I'm doing them in a batch to try and make the most of my painting time. Goal is to have them done by Halloween (they are goblins after-all).
One of the models is finished... Heretsuna, the "Ghost Ninja". He's not actually supposed to be white... I was getting him ready to paint black and the white just happened. Nice thing is if I change my mind I can just apply black washes over and over again until he's appropriately black. That's how I do my blacks now-a-days anyway (though I usually start with a dark grey with light grey, then white highlights before applying 2 or 3 layers of wash).
I've gotten totally fed up with my camera's ability to take decent model pics so just ordered an inexpensive little tent & lights so I can go back to taking worthwhile photos with my digital camera.
Thanks guys. Still hoping to get them done by (and including) Halloween but hope is slowly fading. Just have way too much to do. Busy each night, work deadlines, etc. I'll keep at it though regardless.
The Bushido Grand Masters at Adepticon is set for Friday that week. 40 slots open. Nice to have that settled.
Thanks guys! Unfortunately reality has reared its ugly head and I won't be able to finish them until the week after next. But I'm happy with them so far.
Been a while since I had anything to post. Put this up on YouTube a while ago and I thought it might have broad enough appeal to be worth posting here. It's a little pinning video for pinning really small, PITA bits. Hope you like it!
I have seen you demonstrate that pinning technique early in your blog, but it is still one of the best modelling tips that I have picked up in my entire hobby career.
Very happy to be of service my friends! On another note. I just sent out the officially worded version of the Adepticon Grand Master's Tournament text. Re-posted here for your convenience.

I just got to watch this - and wow, you are quite the master modeler, Gits! That group shot at the end just looks absolutely perfect.
Also, happy new year and all the best for your event at AdeptiCon, that is really exciting!!
I haven't been completely idle. Got a giant bat painted up for my Bushido Savage Wave war band and began the long process of working on the Adepticon boards and objectives. These are just phone pics, I don't actually have functioning image editing software at the moment so it's the best I can do.
Gaint Bat:
Winter table 30mm and 50mm objectives. The smaller objectives actually have a facing (the direction the bird is facing):
I just thought I'd post this in case there were some among you who aren't familiar with these. This is my latest supply dump. These are illustration pens by Pigma under the designation "Micron". They come in a variety of colors and two main tip types... a normal pen tip (which comes in a variety of sizes) and little brush tip. They're fantastic for doing detail work on models... designs, calligraphy, etc. Pretty cheap too at something between $2-$3 per pen... cheaper if you get them in a pack. I think this batch cost me $23.
You can find them in any art supply store, I've even found them in better hobby stores. If you're in the US, I use Dick Blick out of Chicago (recommended to me by a friend of mine who is a professional artist).
Boy were they a major boon when I first found them!
I have heard of these before, I managed to get hold of one years ago, but I think it had been sat on the shelf forever in the shop. I used it recently as a 1mm scribing tool for panel lines in epvc. Ink was gone a long time ago.
Does it matter that they are Archival ink? I mean, are there different ones, and is that in some way important.
I don't think I'm going to post too much Bushido stuff on here are I know there isn't much of a market for it. However I'll continue to post painted models and projects that may be of interest (regardless of gaming system).
Thus... a few photos. I got an order in from Master Crafted Miniatures who does a lot of casting to support Bushido. Included in the order was a prototype of a new token set that Ben's developed. I really love them, even as is (laser cut wood). They're small, easy to read, most designs are intuitive and they came with a key so you could easily find out what any of the symbols were supposed to represent. These are a HUGE improvement over the original cardboard tokens. Ben also makes some AMAZING replacements for the standard GW space marine bike tires. Makes me wish I was running White Scars... or even had bikes!
Master Crafted Miniatures castings and tokens for Bushido:
Also for your entertainment... I finished some 8" diameter area-of-control markers made of skewer sticks, then used a brown one of those pens I just got to make the nodes. Turned out pretty well even though I would have preferred better quality (and a bit smaller) wooden dowels to work with. Price was right on these though, so I'm not complaining.
"Bamboo" fighting mats and my "Alpha Dogs" in action.
I've been going through the "refining process" on what I think is the most powerful list I've put together so far. Just like with 40k, I've been playing it a lot... tweaking things as I go. I *think* the last iteration is the best, but frankly any of the last 4 variations would work well in a competitive situation.
Gitsplitta wrote: I don't think I'm going to post too much Bushido stuff on here are I know there isn't much of a market for it. However I'll continue to post painted models and projects that may be of interest (regardless of gaming system).
Gitsplitta,
There is always room for painting models reducing the ranks of the unpainted.
I quite like seeing the Bushido stuff. My hobby collection is really limited to a couple of games and therefore, I depend on other peoples blogs to see what else is out there that I need to resist the temptation of.
Yours does that admirably with excellent terrain and models (plus I have picked up some of the best hobby tips I know from you, that pinning technique is awesome).
Thanks guys. This was a particularly visually stunning game, even as one of the players!
I'm going to be making a new lava board that will be much more playable than the last one. The terrain *and* objectives will be crystalline in nature too. It should be a tour-de-force test of my airbrushing technique. Not that it'll be complicated... but it'll be tricky (if you get my meaning).
Gitsplitta wrote: I don't think I'm going to post too much Bushido stuff on here are I know there isn't much of a market for it. However I'll continue to post painted models and projects that may be of interest (regardless of gaming system).
You got me into Bushido Gits! If this is the case, is there anywhere else you're putting this content other than youtube? I'm very much keen on keeping up with the Bushido stuff as I madly paint my own ninjas
GiraffeX wrote:I’ve been away for such a long time, so nice to see that you are still keeping your brush wet mate!
So good to see you back Gir! We've missed you! Yeah, I'm still painting, though not at the level I used to. Still puttering away though.
Rygnan wrote:

Honestly Rygnan, I didn't think that anyone was paying any attention to the Bushido stuff and that I was just wasting people's time for anyone watching for updates. I can continue to post here... no problem. I just figured people wouldn't miss it.
I do post quite a bit on the "Bushido The Game". It's probably the main FaceBook page for Bushido on the web and gets regular contributions from some of the game designers. The address is... https://www.facebook.com/groups/978331922263243/. It's a private group but I can't imagine any who asks not being allowed in.
That being said... here's what I've been up to recently. Prep for running the Adepticon tournament.
Finished 8 sets of 30mm and 50mm objective markers and 9 sets of 4" and 8" diameter area-of-control markers. These were a tremendous amount of work and it's a huge relief to be done.
With the objectives complete, I started working on some additional terrain as a couple of last year's tables fell apart and needed to be re-done. First up, some cut firewood piles. I thought these would work great with any town, farm or other inhabited area. These are just from some D&D scenery set, (3 of them).
Next, a geisha cart. This is a laser-cut wood model done with spray stain and weathering powders.
Finally, two market stalls. I had all the little bits painted for last year, but I think I'm going to make some of them permanent parts of the stalls. As above, these were first spray stained, then rough sanded to expose some bare wood. I used GW washes to make the green roofs, then weathering powders of various colors to achieve highlights on the roof and darken/wear the booth proper.
Great stuff! I always love how pieces that we would probably find mundane were we to see them in reality go together to form a great thematic tabletop surface
Rygnan wrote:Great stuff! I always love how pieces that we would probably find mundane were we to see them in reality go together to form a great thematic tabletop surface
Thanks Rygnan, I feel the same way about it!
Solar_lion wrote:Very dramatic. Your themes are awesome. I always think the little details are most important to sell the look. Outstanding.
Thanks SL. We'll see how this hold up after i do 8 tables worth of them!
A few new things...
Storehouse:
Small Temple:
Conversion of a bakemono nian rider for a giant bat. Not an easy task.
And if that's just not enough... here's a 10 minute ramble on the conversion.
While not very exciting... I did a fair amount of work last night.
Permanently attached some of the food-stuffs to the two food stalls as well as a few odd bits to the smaller garment stalls. Working on adding kimonos to those. Got it figured out just need to do it. Repainted some crates. Painted the doors for the temple which I will eventually install with a sliding mechanism of some sort (vanity project). I also fixed 3 broken models and made a short tree/bush base as the last of my tables needs a bit of help.
Here are my 4 merchant stalls, with goods permanently attached now, including kimonos! (I deserve a prize for figuring that out.)
Got the doors installed in my minka (small house). Made channels above and below so they slide.
Revamped these two bridges. The material they're made out of is weird. Not like normal MDF, has a tendency to flake into a papery substance and didn't take stain well. So I attacked it with sand paper and weathering powders. Also added a very thin layer of silicone to the treads as the arch is severe enough that models have a tendency to slide off it. I'm not-so-patiently waiting for the silicone to cure... probably be tomorrow before I can tell how well it worked.
Finally, nothing starts your day off right (at 5am) like having to pin 5 tiny birds to a cloak because they all stick out in every direction and the gluing surfaces are tiny... thus they constantly get knocked off... #endlessbushidorepairs Luckily all the newer figures are much better designed for practicality and ease-of-build.
Awesome stuff Gitz, the terrain and fully painted armies should make for a gorgeous looking tourney. Have you found out how many players are showing up?
My new Bushido "Pirates of the Caribbean" themed army. Kind of a mash-up of the crews from the Black Pearl, the Flying Dutchman and a character from the animated movie (Treasure Planet). They're displayed on the awesome Junk that Cam made for me (removed the sail for ease of photography) and will be sent of to Nerdfest for painting while I try and finish up my bakemono.
Here's the Adepticon 2020 wrap-up video. While TOing the tournament is a lot of work for me... one look at this video will prove how dependent I am on the generosity and hard work of others. If you run into these folks in-person or on-line... say "thanks". If it's one of the businesses that supported us, throw them a little patronage if you can.
Sorry Adepticon got cancelled was looking forward to seeing all the great tables you had planned. It was a very nice video I had no idea there were so many people involved. You should be set for next year this will give you more time to game now.
@Yorkright: Thanks bud. Yeah... I think next year should be relatively sane.
I've joined the "pile of shame" campaign. Here's what I'll be working on until it's done. Be using some of my new-found free time to hammer away at this, hopefully sooner rather than later.
Also went on a building frenzy. These are all the Bushido figures that I'm inclined to keep at the moment. The rest of my bakemono and a couple of kami.
You glued the stuff to those carts? What's going to get sent flying when a hero chases a villain through the market street and crashes through the carts?
DarkSoldier wrote: You glued the stuff to those carts? What's going to get sent flying when a hero chases a villain through the market street and crashes through the carts?
I did DS... but don't worry... there is a TON of scatter terrain lying around in bags. I just can help myself... keep buying the stuff!
I took a bunch of photos during the construction of the two "cards"... I can re-post if anyone's interested.
I also finally started working on setting up a proper photo tent, lights and my good camera. So if I do a decent job of painting something, at least I'll be able to take a good pic of it.
Liking both those pieces. The cavern-in-a-tree is cool, great work from a nice find. And love the thought you put into the story behind how it came about. Nicely done sir!
Thanks for the compliments guys, it was a fun project.
I'm going to post one more pic of the totem pole. Been struggling with trying to get a new photo set up arranged and trying to get my old digital SLR set up properly. Just want to see how this looks on-line. I think it's a marked improvement over the last pic. Especially if you go to the trouble of zooming in.
Much nicer. I wonder if it would be worth doing something to make the god-head face stand out more? Not sure if you can make the black... blacker... but maybe some highlights around the eyes and mouth? (in a lighter green perhaps)
It seems like all I do is make video's now-a-days... but I've also never gotten an advanced copy of models before to play with. What follows are a series of build videos for GCT's new Bushido "Wolf Clan". The first 3 are fairly long as I do the prep (filing and such) on-camera before I do the actual build. The last one is what I should have done for all of them after the first... the prep is off-camera, but I note any special issues and do the build on-camera.
Not sure how interesting any of these will be to folks here... but they do represent what I've been up to recently.
For US folks... here's where I get my jewelry supplies, (like the ring clamp, jeweler's saws, Foredom, etc. The ring clamp is a whopping $5.35. They have dozens of types to fit your fancy!
https://www.riogrande.com/
Not sure where to get supplies overseas... but I'm sure you've got something similar.
@nerdy: LOL! Obviously you're into quantity over quality!
Admittedly, this is not the best painted figure in the world... but it's the Bushido equivalent of a grot, so a functional paint job works fine for me.
Thanks for the comments guys! Have a second archer for you. This is one of the new sculpts and really demanded a better effort from me. Still a very simple paint job but a much more technically proficient one.
Black eyes, cool. Another thought then - some gloss varnish on the eyes (and perhaps tongue while you are at it) might draw the attention back to the eyes as a whole rather than just the glints.
New video battle report is up (a while ago). If you're curious about how the game is played, most of the game was filmed live... so you get to see how everything works.
This is a fun little 70 rice Bushido Risen Sun battle report between the forces of the Ito Clan and the Savage wave. The scenario is Muzukashi and we've actually filmed nearly all of it "live" which is why it's been so long since you've seen a new battle report. CV--19 has our home DSL stretched to the limit making it impossible to upload a longer video like this. Special thanks to my father-in-law for allowing me to use his internet which is much more reliable (and faster) than my own.
Also finished the last two "generic" bakemono... these are called raiders. Duplicates of the same figure, slight difference in paint jobs. Only 3 left now, all special characters
Love your bakemono. Tell me, gitsplitta-san, what is there in the way of Oni figs? I'm really looking for a spear wielding lightning Oni, but I'm flexible.
Bakemono family pic minus 3 models. One of the three is painted but it's a bad sculpt with a matching paint job... so I'll spare you the pic. Last two should be fun to paint though. While I was busy adding mushrooms to each model, I realized that I'd never finished painting several of them, so I took care of that while I was at it.
Updated bakemono "family" photograph, this is all of them. Also a new video.
It's really exciting to have all of these done. Two more oni to paint and my entire Savage Wave collection will be painted!
New video is up! Have a new feature for the channel called "OG Paints". I'm going to try and keep these short and pithy and pertaining to specific issues, techniques or projects. NOT a rambling monologue while you watch me paint... good Lord that would suck.
Today I show you some of the ways I work through not having a clear plan when it comes to deciding how I want to paint a figure.
Looking great all together. Shot is especially nice taken in front of your scenery. I’m not much of a video watcher - but I’ll probably check that one out
Great family shot Loads of character in the whole group. The
Nice idea for the short paint videos. One thing that might have been good in this one is to have had some examples where you had finished the 'set' parts so you could see the next steps, rather than just very beginning and end piece. Of course, that would require you to have some at that stage, which might not be handy given the subject
Thanks graven... yeah, I'm pretty much a gonner. Getting to do some play-testing now which is fun and cool. Also with 40k changing drastically in the near future and my marines (like everyone's old marines) getting retconned... there's not much competition for my attention. I'll keep my AdMech up-to-date (mainly by sending things to Damo) but other than that there's not much to interest me.
Actually monkeytroll, that was the original idea, I just got caught up in finishing off the minis so I didn't film anything. The project that I'm working on now for OG paints will have beginning, in-process and end shots.
I have been working on a new terrain piece for Bushido... it's called a "Cavern Hole" and goes with my bakemono. Basically a hole in the ground. Of course I had to make it complicated by adding a trap door and block & tackle for opening.
Pulley's made... unfortunately they're non functional. Spent a couple of hours fiddling, then decided it was doable but not worth the effort.
On a side note, this is my 4000th image uploaded onto dakka.
...also...
New video is up!
Bushido Risen Sun battle report featuring Carl's Ito Clan vs. a Savage Wave bakemono horde. 100 rice, Ryodo. I've built a massive bakemono summoning army and am testing the limits of the rules vs. a custom built Ito list. Can the snake lords survive the onslaught? Lets find out.
Please note: Under the current rules, I am doing the bakemono summoning correctly (once per model, per turn). I have confirmed this interpretation with the game designers.
Nice, easy airbrush job. I took a idea from the sculptor and pulled some basing elements up into the bodies of the kamis. Nice thing is these can be taken by three of my factions... so very efficient in terms of painting time. Just had to name them. Props if you get the SNL reference.
Thank you Brian and MT! (I knew you'd get it Brian.)
Yeah, got side-tracked on my trap door project by the desire to get a 100-rice Cult list banged out. I'll get back to it shortly. Currently working on three wreathed-in-smoke skeletons and a zombie Tengu.
I've been through Summaries 10, 11 and 12, to catch up a bit on what i missed over the years. Great stuff there man, and you can see painting improved vs first few summaries!
Now, forgive my ignorance but ... where do you store all these models?

No worries even with a slump, we don't have any chance of catching up to your page count, I'm looking forward to seeing you hit 600 also.
Does your hobby room get really hot in the summer, or is it okay? If you are in a slump for making stuff for the hobby, I know I would love to see some group photos of some of your collections, or a tour of your hobby room. (Of course that would be more work than the hobby itself).
Just checking in. There will be some new things that are 40k in the future... though I might get Nerdy to paint them for me to keep my AdMech army consistent. Depending on the rules, I'll be picking up (perhaps many) of the new AdMech beast riders and at least a squad of the glider guys, because all of the above are super cool.
I'll also be playing some 9th locally with a bud, so perhaps that will inspire me to do some of my own painting. I don't have a ton of Bushido figures left to paint so perhaps that will open up this winter for getting back into some 40k work.
Adepticon is still a question mark for me. There has to be a readily accessible and reliable vaccine for me to attend. The GCT guys know it and have been very supportive. I'm still very willing to run the tournament, but I can't risk my or my families' health doing so.
Otherwise we are fine. Thing 1 is back at the University of Richmond, Thing 2 will be starting his junior year at a new high school next week, though it's virtual of course. Everyone else is fine. Looking forward to a very productive winter hobby season!
As always, thanks for being there for me. Does my spirit good to see there are still people who visit here. Hope you are all happy and healthy too.
I figure I'll build everything, paint the Warglaves myself (perhaps modfying 2 into the second variant) and send the rest to Nerdfest for painting. Not sure about what variants of the hounds and gliders to build yet. Will have to look at the rules and get some advice.
My friend Tyler and I played a little 500 pt patrol game yesterday. Our first in over 2 years. Was great fun though we screwed up the rules from end to end.
His new IG and my AdMech were arguing over a recently cleansed manufactorum. They wanted the Baneblade, we wanted the Manufactorum however they didn't file the proper paperwork to claim their Baneblade... so they were going to have to que. The IG didn't like that idea very much.
The table. 4 primaries (gold medallions) though they don't show up very well.
T1: kitty-corner deployment, everyone moves forward to nab objectives.
Using the baneblade for cover, the Dune Crawler drops the hammer on the IG Lehman Russ, killing it in T2.
T2: 3 Electropriests wipe the remaining 6 super-guard from the field of battle.
T3: Infiltrators... well... infiltrate behind enemy lines (in the way back behind the pipes) and cause chaos for a while until they are wiped by weight of fire.
T4: Big guard squad takes center table.
T4: Electropriests try to deal with last IG but meet their doom in the process.
Final Score: 44 to 42, AdMech. Tyler was killing me early on as I sacrificed objectives for kills early, then the tides turned late as I had 3 units to his 1 (HQ, dune cralwer and a small squad of skitarii). We beat the living crap out of each other though...
Also working on AdMechy terrain.
Finished painting a bunch of old, OOP Armorcast refinery pipes.
This is what I'm working on now (the rest of my collection). Hope to have all this done by the weekend.
Also working on these tank sets. I'm trying to do as much of everything as possible using spray cans... but I will end up adding some hand-painted detail to the pieces.
Lastly I found and ordered some extra Armorcast pieces from this set. Another refinery section, a power generator, some more pipes but mainly a number of intersections and ends, which will allow me to make a lot more interesting layout.
What, you had a 40k battle report and did not invite me! J/K looks like a lot of fun and the new terrain is coming along nicely. When the plague has passed I would love game sometime.
Actually, Tyler and I are using the ongoing conflict between your Blood Angels and my Mantis Warriors as a model for building a similar narrative between his IG and my Forge.
Still making progress. Weathering is done. I was happy that the tanks are a pretty good match for the pipes as the techniques are different. Everything needs detail now. Copper pipes first, then wires & cables. Not sure what I'm going to add to the big tanks to make them interesting but I can print out some signs, posters and have some spare AdMech bits that I can add for interest. It won't take much effort to make the pipe sections ready to go but the tanks are going to take some work.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Update:
First batch done or nearly so. (refinery and pipelines) The tanks will stay as they are for the time being as taking them the next step will be pretty time consuming and I should have more refinery parts arriving any day now. The tanks actually fit right in as you can see even though their paint is very basic. Appropriate enough for a disused industrial center. Of course this is a lot denser than it would be on the table... however I could see doing something like this and calling the whole thing a large ruin.
I've been thinking up a story to go along with Tyler and my battles, similar that which Yorkright and I made up for our ongoing Blood Angel/Mantis Warrior rivalry. You guys interesting in hearing the early ideas? (it's not a lot... just a sketch really)
So I'm wondering if this post is going to take me to 600 pages. I guess we'll find out!
Been very busy this week working on my Armorcast refinery terrain. The final pic (at the end) won't look much different than the pic I posted earlier, but believe me... there's a week of hard work between them.
Let's see. I finished the main refinery piece. This has been OOP for a very long time. Delighted to have it done. Wish I could get a couple more but they just can't be had. Keep in mind these aren't complicated paint jobs by design... I just want to make them look good at table length. I can always add more detail later on.
Then I worked on a serious re-build of another refinery piece that was not what I was hoping. I was hoping for a base and two more towers, what I got was a base and two ruptured tanks. I didn't want this, so set about modifying the ruptured tanks and combining them with other bits from the set to turn them into something that matched the rest of the set.
I started out with two things that looked like this (not duplicates of each other but the same idea).
Then I cut the tops off and ground off the spillige from the sides of the tanks. Nice bit about this is I can still use the tops of the ruptured tanks for something.
When I'm done cutting-and-pasting bits... I get this! (much better)
So here's the whole set so far. Very close to 2'x3' of dense terrain.
I'm going to entertain myself by painting up the tank tops and re-painting a little control board piece to match. I should be getting a large shipment of pipe parts (pipes, intersections, supports and end pieces) any day now. Will throw myself into them when they arrive.
Lovely to see you getting back in the habit. There is something VERY satisfying about painting terrain, I find. Happy on the impedance of your sexcentary also!

Yeah, I agree 100%. Especially when you come up with a system that is simple and relatively quick but yields good results. For me I think what helps is that nice terrain improves every game it's used in... and in the case of my current ongoing series of games with Tyler's Astra Militarum... these will get used quite a bit (though not exclusively of course).
Theophony wrote:Those armor cast pieces are really turning out great. You will have a planet sized refinery by the time your done. Good work on cutting off those tops to get double use out of the parts.
Thanks Theo. Actually, once this last batch comes in I think I'll almost be done unless I bump into some of the really rare pieces. I'm actually going to be conducting a terrain purge. Have 3 sets that I'll be focusing on... orks (done), AdMech (nearly done) and marines (built but not painted). Most of the rest will probably get traded, sold or pitched (depending).
Briancj wrote:I'm VERY jealous that you have the small pipe walls AND the tall pipe overpasses. *shakes fist*--B
Knew I could count on you to be a kindred soul. It's not hyperbole to say I've been collecting these pieces for decades. Fell in love with this set long, long ago. I've ordered the connecting pieces for the low walls from Armorcast but I have very little hope of them actually following through on the order (though they did take my money readily enough). I think they used to make supports for the high pipe overpass but I haven't seen any for sale. I guess I'll keep looking just in case something comes up for sale.
Very nice! I've been pulling together all my industrial terrain bits to start constructing some necromunda terrain, so I'm looking around at how people are painting industrial stuff and it's so varied.
I liked the ruptured tanks. You could have stuck some magnets in there and made the tops swappable in case they get destroyed mid-game
@endtrans: Thanks! I can actually disassemble one of the two towers and put the ruptured tank top back on.
Speaking of which... had to entertain myself while I wait for the next order of Armorcast to come in, so...
Also re-painted an old piece that I picked up at a game store going-out-of-business sale. You can tell I didn't have anything else to work on because it's got a mighty 6 different colors on it!
Found these beauties in my gallery that I'd made long ago just for this set of terrain. Will be adding a LOT of these to give the various pieces some life.
That's all for now. Have another game on Thursday with Tyler. Will be writing up some background & will post here when complete. Thanks for stopping and commenting!
OH, and the first comment should be the opening comment on page 600! (when it finally rolls over)
Thanks guys! Wonderful to have you along for the ride!
Finished up a little more refinery terrain. This is actually a pretty small set. The big tower is perhaps 5". I'm pretty sure this entire series was made for a tiny scale like Epic or even smaller, but the look so cool I use them for 40k anyway.
Started working on what should be the last major influx of items for the pipe walkways. Quite a bit actually... 9 intersections/supports and 6 or 7 short pipe sections. That should be it until the handful of upgrades for the pipe walls come in.
@archer: You would laugh... Black spray primer, boltgun metal spray primer, dark rust weathering powder on the pipes, roughly the same color spray paint as the powder (very lightly applied) on the tanks and bridge.
For your viewing pleasure... the completed industrial set!
If you are looking to liven up the tanks, you could rivet on a patch and then stick a few purity seals on it. Small leaks you can probably patch with just a purity seal, but big ones you need to rivet a plate over. But without the seal, it’s just going to anger the tank’s spirit and leak again.
@Nev: That is a hilarious idea! I do plan on livening up the tanks... but I just wanted to get things done so they could be placed on the table. Have some ideas as to how to pretty things up a bit but I'll certainly add yours to the list!
@graven: My son asked me the same thing... I don't know for sure. My guess is that it's a FatMat.
I must admit to being pretty chuffed at having finished all of this in a relatively short period of time. 3 weeks isn't exactly fast, but for how little I've been painting lately it's a pretty big accomplishment. I'm not quite done yet either... I have 5 laser-cut containers that are more 40k scale than the other ones I have (but no-where near as awesome) that I'll be painting next. Then I'll give myself a break on the terrain and start building my AdMech figures to get sent to Taz for painting (thanks Nerdy!). I have pulled out a few for myself to paint as well... but the onus is on getting the bulk of the new models built and painted quickly and well... that means getting them to Nerdfest as quickly as I can. I've also traded some 40k stuff I didn't need to my friend Tyler who's going to paint my new Bushido Wolf Clan for me in trade. So I'm making progress on that front too!
I've also been going through my terrain collection. Sorting everything and pulling things out for either disposal, trade or sale. Generally I'm just going to keep things that fit one of my main themes... the rest (even if they're nice pieces) need to go. I do have the "honored imperium" set and one of GW AdMech pieces that I'll be keeping and painting at some point as both will fit in with my other sets pretty nicely.
Does anyone know where the copywrite date or rules edition is indicated on the 40k codices? I have so many old ones and they're taking up a ton of space... but I can't tell most of the old ones from the new ones.

If it is anything like the AoS books I have, the contents page has a Designed By/Produced By block at the bottom. There is a copyright statement near the top of that block that has the book's release date in
A little 40k battle report from my AdMech/Astra Militarum campaign with Tyler.
Here's the table. The IG and AdMech are fighting over the remnants of an Imperial World (including a Draconus Mons forge) after it has been overrun by a branch Waaagh Gitsplitta, which was then encouraged to leave by a contingent of Grey Knights. As with many Imperial internal conflicts, this one started with miscommunication, then egos got involved. The first dispute (500 pts) was over a still in-tact Baneblade that the Astra Militarum (Cadians) were planning on claiming for their own. Draconus Forge saw this as theft of their property of course, and the first battle ensued (very narrow Draconus victory).
This time (750 pts) Draconus forces are trying to gain control over systems and administration facilities on the edge of the forge as doing so is necessary to begin the recovery of the forge. The Cadians however, have misinterpreted this as an attack on their temporary base, and are determine to repulse the attack.
Some OG Skitarii Vanguard (who look amazingly like Mechanicum troops) set up shop in a stone ruin (stone ruins give -1 to hit and +1 to armor saves). Both armies had stone ruins available. They have a good view of a Taurox on the other side of the battle field, but there's not much they can do about it.
Two squads of rangers set up in normal ruins (-1 to hit) in the back with 2 arquebuses each to snipe for enemy commanders. I love the idea of the arquibuses, but they're inconsistent and rarely accomplish their mission (killing enemy commanders).
The big dogs (Kataphron destroyers) set up in the other ruin. The guys on the bottom level are only overlapping so neither falls off. The did both fit on that level but if the table got jostled they'd come crashing down. That's also why the guy on the top has a rubberband around him. They did OK. The new rules help but they're just so easy to kill and SO expensive. I rarely field them as I think there are much more efficient units for the point cost. They did fit the scenario nicely though.
Don't ask me how tracked guys got up in the ruin... but they are infantry, not vehicles. In retrospect I wouldn't do this again. They can move and shoot their heavy weapons and they're objective secured... so I think they'd be more effective moving up the table and firing as they go.
A unit of skitarii and tech priests are below at ground level holding an objective just behind the tower.
This this is what things looked like at the end of turn 1. No casualties yet but the Taurox (behind the tower on the right) is pretty shot up.
Cadians move into a ruin near one of the center objectives.
Two units of Cadians move boldly up the center of the board.
Las Cannons take position in a large stone ruin.
First real show-down of the game. Draconus vanguard step forward and do a number on the Cadians, however they left a few alive, which stepped forward and retaliated pretty effectively.
On the opposite flank, the other vanguard squad did the same, they'd already taken out one squad of Cadians and would put the hurt on this one in the shooting phase... only to be bogged down in combat with the survivors and a Commissar.
Back on the near flank, the survivors and a second squad are going to do unfriendly things to the Draconus vanguard. The guy lying down is a "raised banner" on that objective for the Cadians.
Back of the far flank, the vanguard slog away with the Lord Commissar.
The remnants of an IG squad near center table... trying to decide their next move.
My priests charged a lone survivor of an IG/AdM melee on the near flank, from which they'd planned on consolidating towards a center objective. Unfortunately they electrocuted the poor sod on the charge... and since no melee really happened we decided no consolidation could happen either.
Just about an end-game shot. We called it on T4 as it was getting late and the outcome was clear.
Draconus Forge casualties.
Cadian casualties. In spite of this they won an overwhelming victory as Tyler did an excellent job playing the objectives and I was much too slow to react. He'll get an extra bonus as a result in our next game. Congrat's Tyler, well played!
So Draconus Forge has been thwarted in their efforts to re-establish control over the infrastructure of this region. What will they try next?? Only time will tell.
Thanks boys! I'm totally with you Archer... I'm liking this edition. Makes me re-think my game which keeps it fresh.
Holy smokes! Gitsapalooza is back on the air! Just a simple little showcase video on my Savage Wave this time, but have two battle reports in process. Hope you like it. It's good to be back (and thanks for being so patient while I was re-charging my batteries).
Another little terrain side-project. Cam made these for me years ago as supports for an orkified landing platform. Unfortunately the main platform warped... but... the supports are in perfect shape, so I conscripted them to serve as additional industrial terrain. I added the straight pipes on the piece with the ladder rungs. Nice to finally have these painted and in service. Hopefully one day I'll figure out how to fix the platform and put that in use too.
Hmmm... just realized I forgot to add the rust to the one in the bottom right. Back to work...
Wow Gits, Congrats on a mammoth 600 pages!!
Absolutely stonking effort
Really chuffed to see you back at some 40k again. Been waaaay too long since we've seen some Mantis Warrior stuff!
The terrain looks fantastic and the batrep was a good read.
Congrats on 600 pages! Loved the battle report, that's a nice campaign you have going. Gotta echo the others, good to see that despite heavy losses Guard won the day. In other threads there's always discussion about stats, how many models a unit can kill but these reports show, that it is not the most important part of the game.
Thanks guys, I really appreciate all of your comments and support. I would have gotten bored of this thread long ago if it wasn't for the many, many people who've read, commented and contributed over the years.
Well, I finally painted some actual 40k figures. They aren't fancy, but I tried to paint neatly and even did a bit of blending on the cloaks. These are the two Skitarii alphas I need to lead my 30k subbing as 40k vanguard figures. They aren't in typical Mars colors so I painted the alphas to match. I figure they're some kind of special unit with an alternate coloring (even though they're still Mars).
Here are the two new guys... I may enhance they're bases a bit as these are kind of stark.
The alphas with a selection of their units. In general terms they match their men but the lighter grey cloaks will help them stand out on the tabletop.
Next I'll be building and painting the two AdMech miniatures from the Combat Arena boxed set. Then I'll start building things to send to Nerdfest for painting.
I may also do some grot tanks... even though they're overpriced... because I love them (and have another shipment of them coming in from Kromlech.... because I just can't help myself.
