Gitsplitta wrote: Newest video is up. This one is on how we've grown our Bushido community here in Madison. Might be something useful for you if you also play a small, rather uncommon game (regardless of game)..
Git! I'm loving all of this Bushido stuff you've got going on...this is another game I've had my eye on and am struggling to stay away from. Loads of great asian themed MDF kits are popping up everywhere that would be great for this game, Blacksite Studios in particular just dropped a big set.
For the time-being though, I will get my fix by watching your Plog. Keep up the great work!
Thanks guys! Really appreciate the support and positive comments. It's fun to be in oh the leading edge of something for a change. Makes me feel and shiny and new.
Thanks for the vid Gitsplitta, informative info that I may try to apply to other games. I never would have guessed that the board you made had no paint beyond the base coat.
Gitsplitta wrote: LOL! Make sure you have someone else to play first... either that or buy two clans so you can give one to a potential adversary.
I watched the video, great thoughts in there. I haven’t gotten to game in years except with the kids. The local area has multiple FLGS, but working 2 jobs and the kids with activities and all around family stuff means painting is about all I can do. Of course I went to order the whole clan and all the things, but they are out of stock . I found some eBay sellers, but with eBay doing 15% off every few weeks I think I’ll at least wait till then. Maybe the bear will be available by then .
Yeah, the bear clan was a highly anticipated expansion so it doesn't surprise me that they're hard to get at the moment. I don't know that I've seen a release date on the actual bear, but I imagine it'll be out fairly soon.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Proof of life. Finally sat down to do a bit of painting (staining) of my temple buildings for Bushido in advance of our tournament on the 6th. These aren't very far along, though I did get as far as distressing the roof of the building on the right. With a bit of luck I hope to have these both done tomorrow.
Buildings are looking wonderful, simple and effective. Really nice bud.
Love the batreps, all considered I think you did not bad, I think that it is good to play with different setups, not necessarily our first choice. It's more realistic, you don't always have your best on hand.
@Cam: I agree. I have a good number of Tengu figures left to paint. I've got my hands full getting everything ready for the tournament on Oct. 6th (terrain, objectives, prizes, etc.) but after that I need to buckle down and get the rest of my faction painted so I can field a variety of lists.
@Nev: Funny you should say that... Nerdfest mentioned that he'd like to see me do an entire 40k table with this stuff so my armies could fight on a feral world. I might get there eventually. There's certainly a lot of beautiful laser-cut wood buildings available representing this era and culture available.
Hey Gits. Been lurking while you've been posting bat-reps, but just wanted to say, really good job on the terrain. The end result on the temple bell is pretty darn authentic looking. How did you go about getting that distressed look on the roof tiles?
@Snrub: Sandpaper is your friend. I use 100 grit for general distressing of the entire area, then 60 grit when I what to "apply the pain" to specific areas.
Some better shots of the latest two buildings...
First, the bell tower. It's not obvious from this photo but the bell is actually metallic and the tips of the beams are gold. Everything looks some variation of brown in the photo unfortunately. I should have gone with a naturally aged looking bell which would have looked a very dark grey. At least it would have shown up better.
Next, the outside of the temizuya (for washing/purification before visiting a shrine). Very happy with how this came out. Everything worked from the distressing of the roof to the floor and water-stain details around the water basin in the middle.
In this photo the 'aard coat hadn't dried completely yet, thus was still milky. It's cleared up very nicely now.
Lastly, I worked over a previously painted rice barn with sandpaper as I always thought it was too pristine looking... like it much better now.
Those are looking really great bud, nice compliment to the minis. Can understand it is a fair amount of work for a lot of the buildings all together, but a bit at a time you seem to be whizzing through them.
New video is up. A bit of a discussion about the painting and distressing of the buildings you've seen me post lately. First of a new series of "Hobby Time" videos for the channel.
Ah now that's an interesting method. I thought you'd just painting the weathering on. But actually using sandpaper to get realistic weathering is clever.
Finished my first new set of Area-of-Control objectives to match one of my boards. Pretty happy with how they came out. Even dressed up the old board a bit. Was going to do more but ran out of basing materials.
Thanks to today’s eBay 15% off (PICKSOON), the Minimoto Clan is on it’s way to me. Starter set, 2 Jyoto ashigaru and the clan cards. The seller didn’t have Hisoka or any bears. Those 7 figs are good for 47 rice. Since they all have Tetsubo, I guess I’ll be getting back to work on my home made one soon.
Oh yeah, Thanks Gits for sidetracking me into another game .
Thank you! Really appreciate the support you guys still give me for this non-GW game. Keeps me going!
New video is up! I show the techniques I used to make one of my Bushido gaming boards as demonstrated on 8" and 4" area-of-control objectives made to match.

Excellent as usual. Thank you for taking the time to do the vids.
Back to work slacker, I’m still waiting for my Minimoto Clan guys to show (maybe Tuesday), but just also ordered Hisoka. Being mountain men I’m trying to thing of a good basing idea for all of them. Besides rocky, do you have any ideas?
Well, since you asked... This is cut-and-pasted from my post on our Bushido FB page.
-- MADISON MELEE OVERVIEW --
I just wanted to let you guys know how much I enjoyed meeting everyone and running the tournament at Misty Mountain Games in Madison on Saturday. We had a great turn-out and everyone who drove hours to support us was really appreciated and just an awesome group of guys. I hope everyone had as much fun playing as I did running it. I want to thank Ben Rislove, Evan Scott Golden, Tyler Nelson and Justin Nelson for helping provide tables, terrain and rules expertise. I couldn't have done it without you!
My hope is to put one of these on every 2 or 3 months and take the lessons learned from each tournament and apply it to make the next one even better, Keep your eyes peeled for future announcements!
I shot a lot of video, but I wanted to post some basics on the tournament in case anyone was interested.
Madison Melee #1 - Oct. 6th, 2018
35 rice, 3 rounds, 90 min each
Total time from first roll to dice down: 5 hr, 15 min
11 attendees, 10 of which played
Ties in final points were decided by head-to-head results if available.
11 of 15 games were fully completed in time allowed.
Results:
1) Ben Rislove(Prefecture) - 27 points (perfect score!)
2) Evan Scott Golden (Cult) - 17 points
3) Josh Page (Temple) - 17 points
4) Greg Chyson (Ito) - 14 points
5) Tyler Nelson (Temple) - 13 points
6) Christopher Dick (Silvermoon) - 13 points
7) Cody Ballenger (Cult) - 12 points
8) Thomas H. Staskal (Minimoto) - 8 points
8) Alec Wagner (Prefecture) - 8 points
9) Jason Chyson (Silvermoon) - 4 points
I won't discuss the details of any of the armies, though you can certainly ask the participants to share if they're agreeable. Our champion Ben Rislove has declared that the next tournament will be 42 points, "... because no one plays 42 points". So let it be written, so let it be done!
I did some odd things in order to make the event a bit more fun (yes, it was a tournament... but definitely a friendly one). Rather than assigning tables, since we had one more table set up than we had pairs, I'd start with the top pairing and let them pick their own table, then on down the line. That way even the bottom pairing had a choice of 2 tables. For the second and third round, I refined it a bit & either had to top or bottom person in each pairing pick the table, then the other person got to pick which side of the table they wanted to deploy on (once again in order starting from the top pairing and working down the list). You'll have to ask the guys if they liked that or not.
Looking forward to hosting many more tournaments! Please spread the word among your friends that are within travel range of Madison. The more people that play, the more fun we all have!
With luck, I hope to produce the video tomorrow (day off), in which case it should be uploaded on Tues or Wed.
Awesome looking models on the table there. Great job getting it all together and championing the game.
Also just FYI, I WAS JUST ON THE GCTstudio.com website and they just dropped a new article including two new Minimoto Clan figs (Tetsu the bear ) and another tribesman for your tenge. Also a painting competition on a 50 rice army.
Always nice to see friendly tournaments. Glad you are having fun and enjoying Bushido. I like the genre, but sadly can’t justify a new game myself. I do enjoy living vicariously through your blog though.
The first 47pts of Minimoto hopefully arrive tomorrow, I hope to get them assembled and primed Wednesday if they arrive.another 5 points coming next Monday. Still working on a color scheme, I’m not too driven by the colors I see on the website. Looks like black, steel, white and red. I have a prototype started that I may have a picture up for in my thread later. Using an old crab clan samurai with Tetsubo to try stuff on. Going to push my skills since 7 figs will probably be the Max I have on the board at any time.
Beautiful looking terrain and armies. Really liked your grey stained wood area control markers. Consider that stolen. Will be watching more of the videos later today hopefully.
I'm on a roll! Short form Bushido battle report is up. Tyler Nelson and I slugging it out with 50 rice armies in the mission "The Emissary".
I haven't actually painted any new figures... but I think I'm just about there. My figures have been in pretty desperate shape so last knight I repaired the breaks, touched up the paint jobs and painted the front arcs (which are important in the game). I think they look much sharper now. My plan is to start finally painting new figures tonight. Have 3 lined up and ready to go. It'll be interesting to see how far I get over the weekend. It just dawned on me that I'd made 24 videos with roughly a dozen figures. Definitely time for some new blood.
This is a lengthy blog and can seem quite overwhelming. It describes not only the painting of an army but the evolution of a 20-year long idea about that army. It has involved a lot of community participation throughout and no matter how new you are to the party... I welcome your comments and your ideas.
To simplify matters, I have made a few links to summary posts of the work to date & links to battle reports featuring my MantisAd Warriors. So... read the OP, check out the summaries & you should have all you need to jump ri6ght in and begin to contribute! And please contribute! This blog with be a shadow of itself without all the contributions of it's readers. It's NOT a "lookie what I did" kind of blog... it's much more of a living, breathing, community project (often literally as readers have done their own Mantis Warriors or contributed original sculpts to the effort). If you want a little more reading... the first 3 pages hold a lot of the theoretical stuff & should give you an idea of my thoughts on the chapter. Keep in mind this is all pre IA-10... though I don't plan on changing my opinions much post IA-10. From what I've seen however, with a few minor differences I think my ideas are pretty comparable with theirs. Gotta love it when a plan comes together. :-)
So welcome to the effort! I hope you enjoy it and find something of value in the following pages.
For roughly 20 years I have had a Mantis Warrior army... initially chosen because everyone had space marines and at the time, the fluff did not support chapters fighting one another save in the Herasy... with one exception... the Badab Rebellion. So one of my friends and I chose two of the rebel chapters, I took the Mantis Warriors, he the Lamenters. For 20 years the Mantis Warriors have served as my "second army" or... practice dummies for my main force... usually eldar and most recently orks. During this time however, they have been a constant presence... and slowly worked their way into my thoughts demanding a more substantial role. Their rather unique story in the 1000 chapters, their crusade/punishment, the original artwork in the first ed. rule book, their very name all invite a wide array of possibilities. Over the years I have thought about, pondered, even occasionally written up some of my ideas... but the latest eldar or ork goo-gaw always drew me back from any serious attempt at building the chapter.
Recently however, I've decided that the time has come to finally provide justice for my chapter and do them right... from scratch. There are a few units/figures that will carry over from my existing army, but only a few. Even then most of those models will only be temporary as they will eventually be replaced by special models. Most will get re-designed and re-built from scratch using specific armor styles and weapons, and I hope... custom helmets for the whole chapter. (Does anyone know a good sculptor? I'm not sure I'm up to this part.) Essentially most figures will be converted in some way, and in some cases to a high degree. The other thing is that I have no time limit... I'm not building this for any tournament or competition. I'm just going to relax, take all the time I need... and do it right. Which makes it a great project to do with the aide of this blog because I'll have plenty of time to consider everyone's comments and advice as I work my way through the project.
I know others have attempted the same thing, for probably very similar reasons. I have read with great interest their efforts, and have enjoyed them tremendously. For this project however, I will follow my own vision. I ask you to forgive my hubris in doing so.
Chapter Background *Please note; this entry was made *before* the release of IA 9 & 10 (as my interest in the chapter began back in the distant past). I invite you to read these books as I feel they've handled the Badab War and the Mantis Warriors very well, but they aren't the inspiration for this effort. It's the original fluff, brief as it is... that inspired me so many years ago & continues to do so to this day.
The best synopsis that I have found is given on the Lexicanum web site. While there are at least 3 or 4 sites that provide chapter summaries, the Lexicanum is the only one including references... and since I'm a science guy, having references is important. I reprint key elements of the text without permission. I also include the link to the site in case this isn't allowed & is deleted by the Mod (my apologies if so).
The Mantis Warriors (or Mantis Legion) are a Space Marine Chapter, founded as part of the 598.M35 founding, created to help relieve the White Scars in monitoring and countering the many threats harboured by the Maelstrom.
During the Badab War, the Mantis Warriors sided with the rebel Astral Claws; along with the Executioners, and the Lamenters.
Many Mantis Warriors believe that their chapter is cursed and many outside the chapter still regard them as traitors despite their official pardon. In Warrior Brood by C.S. Goto, they are described as "a chapter on the edge of the law, teetering on the brink of oblivion and approaching the borders of extinction, fighting desperately to regain its place amongst the chosen. They were not outlaws or renegades, but they had no home in the Imperium of man."
Here's the original artwork for them out of the "Compendium"... also reprinted without permission... sorry GW, but it's all I got...
What follows is the original story of the Badab War written by Rick Priestly as it appeared in White Dwarf 101. It is solely responsible for starting me on this journey so many years ago. I reprint it here without permission but with full credit given. Thanks Rick, you little story has given me over 20 years of a wonderful hobby which I now share with my two children and for which, I can never thank you enough.
The Badab War by Rick Priestley (White Dwarf 101)
In 901.M41, as a result of Lufgt Huron's apparent mental destabilisation, the Master of the Tiger Claws and Lord of Badab attacked and destroyed an Imperial investigation fleet as it entered orbit around Badab. Huron's action can be understood with the benefit of hindsight. The Adeptus Mechanicus had long complained of the Tiger Claws' tardiness in submitting gene-seed for routine analysis, whilst the chapter had amassed a huge debt in planetary tithes stretching back over a hundred and fifty years. And when the Imperium moved against its wayward chapter, a full scale rebellion was initiated, the most serious of its kind since the end of the Fourth Quadrant Rebellion in 780.M41.
The Tyrant of Badab, as Commander Huron is known in Imperial histories, was a power-hungry and ambitious individual who should never have risen to power within a Marine Chapter. He was plainly a dangerous individual, able in many respects but lacking the absolute dedication to humanity vital in a Lord of the Imperium. It will never be known for sure, but current hypotheses suggest that the Commander was either an alien shapechanger, or otherwise subject to alien domination of a most unnatural kind. A sudden and unexpected manifestation of psychic powers may lie at the heart of the matter.
By 903 three other chapters, the Mantis Warriors, Executioners and Lamenters had joined the rebellion. Imperial shipping was attacked, and a ship belonging to the Fire Hawks Chapter was captured by the Mantis Warriors in 904. The Fire Hawks immediately retaliated, and soon five whole chapters were involved in the fighting. The Emperor recalled the Marines Errant from the Eastern Fringes, but they quickly found themselves fully occupied protecting Imperial ships in transit.
In 906 two more loyal Marine units, the Red Scorpions and the Minotaurs, had been brought in, and the threat to Imperial shipping was more or less quashed. In 907 the Red Scorpions and Fire Hawks were recalled to their normal service duties in the galactic east, and two more chapters, the Novamarines and Howling Griffons were committed to space-lane duties.
Meanwhile, the Star Phantoms began the task of besieging Badab whilst two other chapters were drafted in to investigate the worlds occupied by the Mantis Warriors and Executioners. The Lamenters were caught in an ambush by the Minotaurs in 908 and eventually surrendered after bloody ship-to-ship fighting. This came as a great blow to the Tyrant, and the rest of the war consisted almost entirely of close sieges. The uprising came to an end in 912 with the fall of Badab and final defeat of the Tiger Claws. Before the war was over, The Exorcists, Fire Angels, Salamanders, Space Sharks and Sons of Medusa all became involved for short periods of time; chapters replacing other chapters as pressures elsewhere necessitated their re-deployment.
With the rebellion over, The Mantis Legion, Executioners and Lamenters were granted the Emperor's forgiveness, subject to undertaking a hundred year crusade. The homeworlds of the Mantis Legion and Executioners were forfeited to the Space Sharks and Star Phantoms for their part in the war. The other legions received salvage rights to spacecraft and a proportion of the booty. The Tiger Claws were all but destroyed. Only a contingent of about two hunded fought their way through the Exorcists' blockade and escaped into deep space. They have not been heard of since. Of the fate of Imperial Commander Lufgt Huron, Master of the Tiger Claws and Tyrant of Badab, nothing is known.
I have some very clear ideas about what I'd like to do with this chapter, other things are totally up-in-the-air. TorrentTurboTaxGogoanime I welcome any and all comments on any aspect of this project, but please keep in mind that while your comment or idea might be a really, really good one. It just may be about one of those few things that I have my heart set on doing in a specific way. Even if that's the case though... I want to hear your ideas anyway. This blog will cover everything from modeling, painting to army construction and philosophy... so the sky's the limit!
As far back as I read Warrior Brood I've adored the Mantis Warriors, and regardless of whether the book is considerd by most to be a bit of gak, I'd even now prescribe it. It gives a decent inside investigate the section.
So I'm behind you 100% can hardly wait for the main model!
That's very cool pauloyozikko. Thanks very much for posting. There will be more Mantis Warriors on this blog in the future I assure you.
In the mean time... I got yet another Tengu done. This guy is named Hirobo and for lack of a better term... is a magic user. Depending on the magnification, the pics may appear a bit blurry. At other mags they're fine. Go figure.
I want you to think about that, for a moment. EVERYONE should think about that, for a moment. Twenty. Four. Figures. And this much content. This much gaming.
The return-on-investment (ROI) of these 'small scale' games utterly crushes, both in terms of cost AND time.
Thanks, Git, for showing folks the affordable side of tabletop war-gaming!
Actually Brian... it's 24 videos with about 12 figures! But your point is well taken.
And I wanted to thank you publicly for the awesome stuff you sent me. The wall/fence is beautiful and makes a great back-drop for taking photos and gaming. Can't wait to use it in a game! Thank you!
Gitsplitta wrote: Finally, a new model painted! This is Hokibo, my facton's other samurai (aside from the big archer).
Oh wow!
Despite being a huge enthusiast for that era of Japanese history (to the extent I moved to Japan for two years) Bushido has never quite done it for me. I tend to prefer the more realistic stuff, but this Tengu really makes me reconsider that attitude. The guy in orange and blue is very attractive too.
Trouble is, I reeeeeeeally can't let myself get into any more game systems!
Magic chicken looks great , and that wall is awesome as well. Is that a resin piece?
Also I just noticed and ordered , Miniaturemarket has some of the plastic replacement models from Rise of the Kage. Two sets of two figs for $2 each set . One is a Ninja and the other is a female spear lady. If nothing else a $1 a fig is a great deal for painting.
Thanks Fifty. I understand you completely, and there are several other historical games out there so it's not like Bushido is the only option.
Funny, for me it's been the fantasy aspect that's made it attractive. Aside from that it's got an excellent rule set that's about to get better & cleaner as they release version 2... sometime in the near future.

Isn’t “a new Dawn” version two? I hope it is because it’s on its way to me .
Just dawned on me that I haven't really posted many WIP photos of my Bushido stuff. Here's what I'm working on right now. A rather large mistic owl. Hard to tell but he's actually levitating. What makes this unusual is that it's actually the first normal sized figure that I decided to paint in pieces before assembly.
First shot: main body done
Second shot: painted and added arms and did basing (for the heck of it)
Last step will be painting and attaching the six tiny birds that are dragging him through the air (the upturned parts of his cloak will have little birds attached to them). I've picked the bird (Orange Headed Thrasher), now it's just a matter of getting the work done. Hopefully tonight. I'm very skeptical that all these little bits are going to stay on the model...
I was just looking on eBay (coupon is 10% off right now) and saw that fig and wondered why you didn’t have it . Looking good. Your feather work is always something to behold.
Is that a GW paint gripper? Do you like using those? I use poster tack on top of an old paint pot myself.
I've had this model for a while now, it's just not really good rules-wise so I wasn't in a big rush to paint it. That being said it's a very cool model and it's not horrible on the table, so I imagine you'll see it quite a bit in my videos... it's just as points-efficient as some of my other choices.
I really like the GW gripper. I only wish there was a way to open the jaws with one hand so the other was left free to insert the mini. With larger bases like this one you have to balance the model on the top of the gripper while opening the jaws with both hands carefully until they're far enough apart for you to wiggle the model in place. It was invaluable on a model like this. All those tiny birds (see below) are just barely glued on and completely surround the body of the figure, making it impossible to grab and hold once they're on. That's why I painted the body first, before attaching the arms or the birds.
Finished product below. BTW the birds are "orange headed thrushes". Just a camera pic so not the best. It's very hard to get a good photo of this model because its a *very* round sculpt and 3-dimensional (if you get my meaning) so in any 2-d view you're not seeing most of the model.
It might just be my time playing WHFB, but I’m getting a very strong Slann mage-priest vibe from him. Big floating spellcaster being dragged around by little helpers.
New battle report is up! Tengu vs. Cult, 50 rice, ryodo mission. Justin and I battle it out for farm supremacy! I'm doing a special Halloween custom mission. No idea how it'll turn out but it should be a lot of fun in any case.
I’m bummed out, my Bushido book has gone lost in the mail, over two weeks overdue now, and I was about to order more figs and cards on the GCTstudios.com website, but they’ve been under maintenance the last two days at least. Hope they got a better server as it was always super slow when I’d log in.
Do you know anything more on their release schedule? I haven’t paid enough attention to them before now to know how long it takes for them to show things like the bear off and for it to come up on the website.
The video was great by the way. I’m thinking my next army will be Cult of Yurei, Silvermoon Sindicate or Ninja. Do you have any suggestions after fighting them?
@Theo: Not sure what happened to your book... but if there's any consolation you don't need it as it's out-of-date by several updates. I can point you to an on-line PDF that is fully updated and is all I use now when I play (directly from my phone). It's just the rules, not all the fluff... but it gives you everything you need to play.
We don't have anyone locally who plays Silvermoon, though one of our guys built an army and won't play it because it's too powerful and no fun for his opponents (or him for that matter). Very cool model range though somewhat limited.
The Ninja are really good unless you match up well against them, in which case they're decent. My Tengu happen to match up well against them, but they can be really frustrating (no fun) to play against if you match up badly. However you get a lot of points with only a few models, so not too much work involved. Limited model range.
Cult are awesome. Can be really good. Lots of variation in play style and figures. Fun, challenging, cool looking. One of my top choices for a second army.
As to the next edition.... next calendar year? Maybe? Wish I could say more but they're still early in the testing stage and I'm definitely NOT privy to inside information.

My rule book showed up. I had enquirer with the eBay seller where it was a week after shipping as he sent me a message saying it was sent. The date on the package shows they sent it the day afte I enquired . But it’s here now.
If you have that link I’d love to have it for my iPad. I downloaded the one off their web page before they went under construction, and printed out a copy and have it all sleeved up, but I like reading the fluffy stuff time to time.
Thanks for the break down of the clans. Not sure which way I’ll go just yet.
Warbases just opened a kickstarter called The 55th Day in Beijing which is all about laser cut MDF buildings and scenery, including hand carts and such. For all that it is China (Boxer Rebellion setting) the look seems good for Japanese Bushido.
Never let it be said that I don't love you guys... this took a literal week to upload. It is a full length battle report and both Tyler and I are fielding very unusual armies with lots of new figures in new combinations. (The battle report isn't actually THAT long... but since I'm having internet problems the upload time was ridiculous).
Hey gang! Newest YouTube battle report is up! This one's a fun, short form report where my Tengu take on Ben Rislove's Kage Kaze Zoku in a 35 rice, 3 models each, VIM slug fest of epic proportions! Want to see the two big birds (Hokibo & Buzenbo) standing side by side, defending the right? This is your video!
Also, the Bushido event at Adepticon has been confirmed and I will be the TO. Sunday from 9 to 3 (sorry, it was the only time available).
Enjoyed the batreps lately, last one was great. Wonderful news on the Adepticon, except that might tie you up a bit, I am sure you will cope though.
Will you guys be having the titan fight thingy? I could post you a little orky thing for someone to play with, maybe you know someone with a little space on a shelf who would like it?
Really glad you like them Cam. Yeah, the last one was a lot of fun.
Actually Cam, I'm not worried about being tied up... it'll keep me busy. Solar_lion's doing a couple of "knight fight" battles which I've promised to help him run... then there's the Bushido tournament. There will be another titan fight which I'll sign up for so one of my boys can play in that. I may sign up for a 40k thing... but I'm not sure. So many changes to 40k in the last year and I'm not up on any of them.
There's always shelf room for orky things... actually saw an old buddy last night and we'd talked about getting together for some 40k, even though neither of us has any idea what we're doing.
Not knowing what you are doing is one of the best ways to play. You tend to be less wrapped up in the rules and more hang-loose, let’s have some fun. A little less on the serious wargame, and a little more of some structure to hang out with friends and have a few beers while pushing some minis around.
That is REALLY cool. You do have the option of doing this in the Silvermoon reward scheme, but it takes 1200silvermoon points to do it. To get Silvermoon points you have to play new to you players at Silvermoon tournaments 10points per person, or beat an actual staff member at a game. So it could take years to develope enough to do this.

... or you can just show up on Sunday and kick everybody's butt! Sounds like a good deal to me and I'm not even playing!
Definitely the better option, and since it’s a sanctioned event you earn points too .
Also, I just got the special attack and defense cards, are they really needed, and what about the generic attack/defense card set? From the look of the special set they were more of just helpful bits of info than something necessary. I’m about to do another order and trying to figure out if I should get the card sets or just another 1-2 figs.
Bushido tournament filled after only 5 hours (which is pretty remarkable all things considered).
Added 8 more slots so now the "field" is potentially 32 players.
The reason (other than money) that I never get to go is that is the week of our anniversary, also usually my wife’s spring break and or my kids spring break . Also smack dab between all three kids birthdays, so funds just don’t exist even if my wife wouldn’t miss me on our anniversary . I’d love to go as I just finished up my Minimoto figs and ordered my second army (Temple of Ro-Kan), from Nobleknightgames.com. I think that’s one of your local shops isn’t it , have to support those who are supporting the game.
Good luck with Adepticon. Glad the game is getting visibility. Also GCT spotlighted Adepticon on their latest news update.
Very exciting. You are conquering the world, one bale of rice at a time we're looking at review copies of Bushido for the magazine. Damn, is it tempting...
Gitsplitta wrote: You need a copy of the updated rules. I can point you in the right direction. They're working on a Mk. 2 rule set, but no ETA on that.
The link you gave me earlier didn’t work. Might need a log in or something, I just use the link on the webpage.
I’ll check into joining the group then, I hate FB, but some times things have to be done ,
Also was just on the GCTstudios.com website, Black Friday special starts Friday, but a starter set get a free model, also 50% off token sets, card packs and rule books. Code: BLKFRI
I’m looking hard at what third faction I should start. I don’t want to compete with you on painting a savage horde, but they are in the running as buying a £29.95 starter and getting a £16.95 Oni character free is a pretty good deal, though I could do similar with Cult of Yurei and grab Gok for free. I need me a “good” evil army to fight my temple of RoKan and Minimoto Clan.
@Theophony: I'm just going to burn through them with an airbrush Theo, I won't be putting it much of a fight when it comes to painting them, so feel free.
@Brian: Actually no... had no idea they did a black Friday sale, but now that I know I can plan for next year.
And now some new pictures from the last Bushido game pitting my son (returned from college for a few days) and his Ito (snake clan) and my friend Tom's Minimoto Clan (the blue guys). These pics will also be featured in my next video battle report which I hope will be available tomorrow. (I'm celebrating my 30th video with NO Tengu!)
Your sons Ito clan are gorgeous. That striped snake is wonderful.
Just tried to place my order, but I guess the coupon code expired at midnight their time . I shot them an email just in case they still want my money. As for the savage wave, I think I’ll let you handle them, I came up with an idea for a Silvermoon Syndicate group that will probably get me banned from the internet for life .
Thanks Theo. Each of his figures are patterned after a real snake. The big guy is a puff adder. I'm surprised they did a black Friday sale as opposed to a cyber Monday sale. Hopefully they'll honor your attempt.
Newest video battle report video is up. Short-form, 50 rice, Ichi No Riten (VIM) mission pitting Tom's Minimoto Clan vs. special guest Carl (home from college) and his Ito Clan. I'm celebrating my 30th Bushido video with NO Tengu! ("and there was great rejoicing.... yaaaay")
Nicely done, been a while since I watched one of your reports, and you've vastly improved since then in the flow and the balance between 'Show' and 'Tell'. A system I don't own, in a hobby that I don't actually play in, and you still keep my attention. Helps that it's a very visual game and board.
I was a lot more descriptive in the tactics and scoring on this one. I'll try to keep it up. Was really nice to have Carl home, even if only for a couple of days. I miss him. <---- sad dad :(
GCT is having a painting competition, these are my entries (50 rice army and random figure). I'm mainly going tor the 10-pound "luck" prize. I've seen some of the other painters out there and they put me to shame.
Man, those pics really (and I mean it) make those models come to life! really nice stuff dude even though it's not my jam I really enjoying seeing something different and so well done :-)
Gits, your work is one of my biggest inspirations, don't you dare knock it. I know that there are lots of you excellent painters out there. But you can compete with the best of them.
I'm not sure how the pics got so yellow. Mist be an issue with the monitor on my little lap-top. They looked normal on there... but here and in the pics that were re-posted by GCT (didn't win anything... they just re-posted all the entries)... yech!
Don't knock your work down Gits, you've painted some great minis over the years, and you're an inspiration when it comes to evolving and improving as a painter. That's one nice-looking bunch of rice you got there!
Just uploaded a very short video taken at the grand opening of Noble Knight games in Fitchburg (south Madison) showing off the crowd and the demo table.
Thanks graven. I thought it was nice of them to do, especially given the size of their company and the size of my YouTube following! (small and miniscule respectively)
@Nerdy: Thanks! Yeah, gaming takes a lot more work around the edges when you're dealing with a game with a small footprint (as opposed to GW games, which are everywhere).
New video is up! Have my friend Evan on the channel for the first time with his brand new Ito Clan. They're unpainted at this point but I wanted to get him on as he's a good player and he's got one of the new tiny snakes! Hopefully Ben Rislove will get those Ito painted for him soon (not sure how Evan made this arrangement originally... but it's a good deal if you can get it).
Somehow I missed your update , probably saw it but couldn’t watch the video at the time and forgot to come back to it. Good game, I’ve looked at the ito clan and wondered how effective poison would be, seems pretty useful.
The new rules are up on the website, I haven’t had a chance to print them out yet, hopefully tomorrow. Looks like points wise cards are going way up, wonder if that’s to make it look more like other games with a base 100 point game.
Merry Christmas everyone! Sorry I've been so inactive. Very busy getting ready for the holidays. We're hosting this year so lots to do. I hope you're all having a wonderful time.
Hope Christmas and the new year were good to you . I saw something in the store today that might help you with terrain for your Bushido tournament. The Forbidden Fortress:gateway into madness set, I picked up a set of it today at Miniaturemarket. You get 4 plastic Tori gates and 4 plastic demon gates for $25 before discount https://www.miniaturemarket.com/ffp07t02.html here’s a picture of one with my monk on turtleback for size reference.
Spoiler:
. l
I’ve primed all 4 tori gates by brush and have base coated one just now. Hope it helps out .
I really haven't been around as-of-late, however don't read anything into that. We entertained friends and relatives for a non-stop 2 weeks over Christmas and New Years. I've got Thing 1 back from university so have been trying to spend time with him, *finally* finished a little model railroad layout (after 2 decades of trying)... it's ridiculously simple (figure-8) but dammit it's done! Anyway... my single-minded determination to get it done has been occupying most of my hobby time. It's been fun doing something different.
Complicating matters, both the Mrs. and I are furloughed due to the US gov't shut-down, so no money coming in. You'd think this would be prime hobby time, but once the holiday rush was over, I found myself sleeping a lot. I knew I wasn't getting good sleep over the last few months, but I appear to have been more fatigued than i thought. Feeling better now though... more energy in the mornings and more drive to do something useful in the afternoon and evenings.
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year and look forward to the hobby joys to come. Thanks as always for your continued friendship and support!
Glad to see you back, hopefully rested with extra sleep. I just figured you were trying to cram through the new rules for Bushido: Risen Sun, or your pirates had keel hauled you till painting was done.
Just glad to see you about bud. It is no worries about anything, but get worried when zero activity. Completely understand though. It is a funny time of year for just about everyone.
Of course it is gaming related, how did you model the buildings, they have relevant to terrain building and I think a gaming board with a running train is every ones dream surely.
Scale, theme, terrain, texture and miniatures for model railroading are every bit as much a game, if you make it so. There are rules, both of physics and of timetables, that have to be followed. For a layout to look good, the right elements must be present in the right relationship, location and quantities. Decorators put a ring of track around their Christmas tree and run a choo-choo; MODELLERS build to scale and have a 'story' (to quote the good Doctor H- who also has posted pics of scale train terrain here) that explains why their train is coming from someplace, going to someplace.
OK, I changed it to "unlisted" which I think means you should be able to use the link to go directly to it though it won't show up in the list of videos. I'll post a few stills here in a bit. Let me know if it still doesn't work.
OK, made it public. Here's the address again in case that was the problem (though I could always get the video to play).
I also took and edited a series of stills... I apologize for the quality of the photos. These are phone camera shots. Couldn't find the necessary bits to use my good camera. Also lighting in the living room sucks.
Layout from the top. Roughly 7'x6'... ish. Squashed figure 8, On30 scale (O-scale, narrow gauge). Crossing tower, station and coal tower (big structure in back). A couple of building fronts to give the illusion of a town in the background. Winter wargaming terrain trees should be familiar to anyone who's seen my 40k battle reports.
"Downtown" from the operators position.
Section of track laid with it's disconnected end hidden behind the crossing tower, just to give the operation the illusion of being more than it is. Also allows the display of cars and loco on the layout.
One of 4 locos, all very different from each other. This is a small geared loco (Heisler). Ultimately it'll be relegated to moving mining cars around but it just happened to be on the track with a normal freight consist.
Train pulls into town from the east.
Boxcars unloading at the station.
This gondola is the first car I've weathered. Ignore the contents. Not proper for a gondola but I wanted to give it some weight and visual interest.
Better view of gondola.
Weathering these cars is interesting & challenging as they're wood-patterned shiny plastic, which I have to make look like non-shiny actual beat-up wood. It's a heck of a lot easier to do that when you start with wood (see my Bushido terrain pieces). I've got two grey box cars disassembled and sprayed with Testor's dull-coat (a necessary step to give any of the weathering options the "teeth" to adhere to the model.) We'll see if my techniques hold up on the much larger surface that the boxcars provide.
<alpha male nerd> "ACTUALLY, that's a stake-pocket flat car with clapboard siding panels, and is 100% suitable for those sorts of loads." </alpha male nerd>
I have in the past considered rules for gaming on a table with a simple MRR on it. I thought it might be fun to have, at the end of each turn, the train run at a set speed for a diced number of seconds. Mobile LOS blocking terrain (or you could get run-over if you were unlucky).
I always enjoy seeing non-rectangular tables for train sets, it just breaks the ordinary look and gets me more into the display. Great job with the layout and planning ahead with the extra track on the window sill to store extra engines on.
@graven, zombies cheat, they don’t stop at flashing reds nor do they yield to the right of way. And lastly they think cow catchers can be zombie catchers too , just another example of zombie entitlement .

--B.
Awesome Brian, thanks! I know it's amateur hour when it comes to MRRing... but I appreciate your interest anyway. I'll keep working to improve it too. For now, I think getting the cars and locos properly weathered will be a good start.
Theophony wrote: I always enjoy seeing non-rectangular tables for train sets, it just breaks the ordinary look and gets me more into the display. Great job with the layout and planning ahead with the extra track on the window sill to store extra engines on.
Actually Theo, I just came up with kind of a neat idea. My dad gave me an old Lionel O-scale steam loco for Christmas. I can change the track on the sill to full O scale for this loco... add a freight car of some sort and have a transfer point for things from the narrow gauge RR to the main line. Viola! Something else to do! I'm so smart!
One thing I've found with posting "other" modelling photos: If you're unsure if it can be classed as "Wargaming related", place a gaming miniature somewhere in the photo "for scale purposes" and you'll have no problems.
Although I've rarely had a problem with all the random things I've posted as I feel it's often clear that I'm showing modelling skills that are transferable.
I also keep them all in a "Inspiration" folder in my gallery,
And I had a chat with KK about what is "wargaming related" when it comes to modelling.
I appreciate that Dr H. As it turns out I did relate the painting of the car to my efforts working on standard wargaming terrain and such. So there is actually some direct connection between the MRR stuff and my wargaming activities.
They made an On30 Shay but I missed it. So all I have is the Heisler and the Climax. Shay is actually my favorite geared loco.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Here's a good scale shot for you. Full O-gauge loco in background... wheel height is just about at the same level for both locos. Also a Death Jester thrown in for scale. Keep in mind this is the smallest of my narrow gauge locos, thus looks the most out of proportion with the big guy in the back.
There is absolutely no need to pay the original asking price for these models, I certainly didn't.
The company that makes these is Bachmann and they can be found at numerous discount train stores on the web. Trainworld, factorydirecttrains & Micromark, just to name a few. You can find a healthy selection of locos with DCC installed (meaning computer chip) for half price or less & pick up a sound chip to plug in for another $80. Some even come with sound installed. If you want regular old analogue locos, they're even cheaper (but no sound).
You can always go HO scale rather than On30... not sure that it saves you any money but it might be worth a look. I just like the bigger scale (as I've aged, bigger things are easier to work with than small things. BrianCJ is a real model railroader... I'm sure he could give you better advice than I could.
The trick is that these model train companies don't make each model forever, they only do it for a short time so they can drum up interest (and price). So you have to keep an eye on the discount sites to wee what they're offering at any given time. That's how I missed getting the On30 Shay. Now if I want one I have to either pay top dollar or buy a used (and likely malfunctioning) one. The Heisler (small loco) is relatively new and readily available. Also, quite possibly my favorite loco and one I didn't show you is the 2-4-4-2 articulated. Mine has developed a short somehow... but it's a fantastic loco. They're still readily available too as well as a variety of 2-6-0s and 4-6-0s (like my biggest one).

The train shop near me sells used and reconditioned train stuff. It’s where I’ve gotten tons of broken stuff for Gaslands and train trussell parts I used years ago for Necromunda.
The local shop owner has one huge 5’x8’ table display which has 7 or 8 tracks on it with multiple levels. It’s not pretty, but it is functional and he dresses it for the different holidays. He has smoking trains, whistling trains and multiple scales with tons of old stuff on it. I’m sure he sells new items, but I did through his cardboard boxes of stuff for the true treasures.
Thanks Damo. It surprises me how long it takes to do one of these, but then there's a decent amount of tricky work, drying time and multiple techniques required. I guess it makes sense. Still, the end result is very satisfying. They're also very big compared to the size of what I normally work with (Not quite rhino sized, but close.
Thanks guys. They are very good quality models to begin with... which helps a lot when it comes to making them look good. I hope to have a new one done tomorrow. Been looking up some prototype photos (old, grey boxcars) and think I have a clear idea of what I want to do next.
Seeing the Death Jester there puts me in mind of Simon Stalenhag's pictures. The dichotomy of the very contemporary and the very sci-fi is one I always enjoy.
I am also thinking about the curved edges of the train track and wondering if it would be a good way of fitting a gaming board into a smaller space. Like my house!
I do like a bit of filth . What's your feeling on using scale gaming stuff mixed and matched in with "real" MRR rolling stock? (tagged you on the old book of face on 4ground's page, with reference to that)
Actually, I'm pretty serious about trying that. Not all battles would be taking place on equally developed worlds. Maybe I can convince Thing 2 to do a small skirmish with me using the train as mobile terrain. You could certainly use it as static terrain. Be no different than your average wall. Just much cooler looking.
Git's could you give me a few dimensions, track width, height of engine, length of engine etc. just rough stuff. Got some ideas mucking about. Fancy doing something with this myself. I still have a toy thing that must be close to scale to "40k".
FYI, "O Scale" is 1:48, which is the closest model scale for standard 25-30mm tabletop gaming. On30 is 'narrow gauge' railroading, which refers to the width of the track. The rolling stock (cars, locomotives) are still in O Scale (albeit somewhat smaller).
@Cam: Well, Brian's given you the accurate scale. In practical terms it's kind of tricky as locomotives and cars range in size over time, design and use so it's hard to give you a specific size. I have a full-sized 0 scale boxcar that is 9"x2.25"x2.25" (not including the wheel assembly underneath). My narrow-gauge freight cars are 6"x1.75"x2" (for a box car). The box cars I've been showing you won't fit these dimensions as they're very specific "shorty's" from fairly early in the steam era (only 16" long IRL). I think normal cars were about 32' long. In general, cars get longer the more recent they're made. My "era" tends to be the early 1900's. Definitely pre-WWII. If you wanted to do more modern or even futuristic locos & cars... they'd probably be considerably longer.
I think your best bet for track is just to get actual track. It's pretty cheap and you can get it anywhere. On30 (narrow gauge) uses HO track (3/4" between the rails), that's 30" IRL. I don't actually own any full-sized O scale track so I'm not sure of the size. I think standard rails are 48" apart IRL.
Here's the second of the shorty boxcars. This weathering pattern is right off of some photographs of an old SantaFe boxcar. Color is more accurate on the 3/4 view.
Early boxcars were anywhere in and around 30 feet or so, and everyone eventually standardized on 36 feet in length. This was up through the 1920's/1930's or so. Then 40 feet in the 30's, and 50 feet post-war. In the 70's, we started seeing larger ones, with the maximum being 86' due to restrictions within tunnels, load bearing issues, spacing between tracks, etc. I believe the EXACT American length limit is 86'6", but I'd have to go look it up.
Early boxcars were wooden with trusses, tie-rods, or fishbelly trusses. Then they were reinforced with iron or steel posts. Only in the late 30's did they start making everything out of steel, eventually banning wooden cars from interchange service (being able to travel between railroads) and then a 100% ban on all wooden cars.
First attempt at tank car-shaped terrain. Not entirely in focus but I just love the 3/4 view. Took this baby completely apart to paint it. Have two more smaller ones with black tanks and grey decks. Should make for a nice change of pace.
LOL! That sounds like a great conversion idea graven... but I'll leave that in your capable hands!
The train is *slowly* starting to come together. In essence I have 4 cars (2 shorty tank cars and 2 shorty boxcars) and the "disco caboose" (so named because the walls are thin and the electrical connection is bad so the light flickers and shows through the red walls... not just through the windows) to go. Then I have to decide if I have the stones to do the locomotives... which I do, I just have to build up the nerve for it. I think I have some garbage HO scale steam locos lying around. I should probably practice on those first.
The little caboose should be a fun project and might happen before the rest of the cars are painted. It'll need to be completely disassembled (like the tank cars) prior to painting with the added wrinkle that the interior will need to be painted and "glass" (plastic sheet) added to the windows.
Briancj wrote: *I see a red hack and I want to paint it blaaaaaack.
Nice. Good advice too. I'll probably start with that as a light blocker then go with something more prototypical as I "decorate" the interior. Lots of photos of wood caboose interiors out there.
Thank you. Actually it was part of an airbrushing lesson for a friend. You'll note the back of the rhino is missing in an odd way. I was happy to get a decent blend with someone else's airbrush after so long a time not using my own.
I also discovered that if you airbrush Vallejo's "blue" over black primer... you get a really deep violet color, not blue. You need to add white to the mix to bring it up to a recognizable blue.
The spark came back two days ago. Here's what I've been up to. Getting ready for Adepticon by cranking out objectives for the six boards I'm bringing.
First, the "small" objectives. Been working on my granite... think it's coming along pretty well.
Here's the whole group of six sets of small objectives.
Quick and dirty 4" area-of-control objective to go on a lava (grey stone) board. I just HAD to put some foliage on there... but I made sure it was all dead first. I figure some pioneer grasses and dead leaves blown in by the wind is OK.
Lastly, I got an idea for an extra set of objectives... paper lanterns on poles next to a path. The log on the ground is actually filling in the slot for the base, but it'll make for a nice separation of the background and the path (in grey). These are far from done.
Nice job on the objectives . I’ve placed another order now that the newest wave is available. It should have the newest Minimoto Clan and the last two (non-exclusive) ninjas in the order.
Where are the paper lanterns from? I was trying to create some of my own but those look far better.
@Theo: I'll be getting the Tengu spear babe as her sculpt is just kickin'! Also the little crabs for my pirates. (Pirates with crabs, who'd believe it?)
Long time no see. It is going to be a pain to catch up on this thread. I have been gone since you first started on the ad mechs when they first came out.
Stonelessword wrote:Long time no see. It is going to be a pain to catch up on this thread. I have been gone since you first started on the ad mechs when they first came out.
Nice to see you again Stonelessword! I'm no where near as productive as I used to be... and now scattered across a bunch of hobby things. But I hope you'll still find interesting things to look at.
Anvildude wrote:Oh, that is lovely stone.
Thanks! (though if you're talking about the green marble tabletop... that's real... belonged to my grandmother, circa early 1900s)
I will definitely have progress to show tonight. Going to throw myself at those lantern objectives & the 4" wood discs I use as the base for my area-of-control objectives came in yesterday... so I'll be busy with those as well.
So cool Gits! I really like those lanterns, what a cool idea but that rhino just screams Night lords to me! great job on it even though it's a practice piece :-)
New set of 4" area-control objectives. Here you see the direct application of my model railroading diversion applied to a gaming application (powders used to weather the vinyl bricks).
Posts for the paper lanterns are done.
Also putting together the tables I'm responsible for bringing so I can make sure they are complete and well designed. Have 3 finished and the other three nearly so. The tables below are all finished except for the lava table which needs the crystals painted. The tables are in the orientation that you would play on them.
I'm working on some interesting stuff right now, but there's a lot of "hurry up and wait" and there's a lot of drying time involved for glue, flocking and washes. I need to remind myself that Adepticon is NOT next week... but still a few weeks away. If I keep working steadily, I should be way ahead of the game.
Update... finished a public announcement sign. I managed to get all 3 types of Japanese writing on here... which isn't good for a period piece... however, it'll do for now.
Is there any form of height advantage in Bushido? I'm concerned the first table provides both a higher level of terrain, and a place to 'hide' starting miniatures. Seems very biased toward that 'far' side.
Otherwise, gorgeous! Frankly, the 'harbour' table is amaze-balls.
Are the trees made from chimney cleaner brushes? They look like that model railroad trick . Also how did you do the hay/straw objective markers, they look ace.
No idea what the trees are made of, they came from multiple sources.
You can buy strands of colored plastic that looks like hay or grass from Woodland Scenics (big model railroad supplier). I just cut them in half, covered the disc with Elmers glue and mashed the strands down. Added some model leaves (actually some kind of seed that looks like a sasafrass or maple leaf) to help with the gaps in hay. Let it dry, then sprayed the living heck out of it with dull coat. Trimmed it up as much as I could so it was less likely the hay would get hung up and things and pull away from the disc. It's still not really stable... but should last for the tournament with no problem.
Making some progress. Going slower than before owing to being sick.
Have a shot of a new terrain piece (clump of birch) and some vanity shots of models on the various boards. I'd eventually like to get some striations onto the birch bark but that'll have to wait.
Wonderful work as always. It is nice to see you still kicking here. Just starting to get back here after so many years. Got a few projects I want to start again. I will be watching here, you have always been an inspiration.
@Ramos: Thank you my friend. They've been very well received by the Bushido community judging to the response I've gotten on the FB pages. I think it's rare that people put that much effort into the boards they play on. It was a fun little project... it's been months since I'd had an airbrush out and the last time out I had real problems getting it to run properly. So I took the time to give it a proper cleaning and reminded myself how to use it. I still think I was pretty clumsy with it... but all-in-all I think they turned out OK. They'll look much better when I get the edge highlighting done... Maybe a bit of hand painted deep shadows on the crystal faces as well. That will have to wait until later though.
@Sageheart: Really nice to hear from you Sageheart. So glad you stopped by and am delighted to hear that your hobby interest is coming back. Feel free to drop by anytime & if you start posting again & I don't respond... feel free to give me a PM jog in the elbow.
It's hard to see because of the way I've painted him (black) and the poor quality photo, but if you look closely at his head design they really nailed it.
I'll tell ya how my day is going. I couldn't sleep last night so I got up in the wee hours and thought I'd put my time to good use building my last two Tengu models. The first guy was a spear man with arms that are really fiddly to put on. I dropped the spear arm, and spent the next hour-and-a-half tearing the floor of my studio apart trying to find it... no luck.
I did however, get a battle report edited and uploaded. Trying out the new mic I got from my sweetie for Christmas. I like it! Makes the background noise at the gaming store much less prominent and makes my voice sound more "normal". Enjoy!
This should be one of the last Bushido-New Dawn battle reports I do. After Adepticon I'll be moving on to the new rule set. However... I may sneak in one or two more if I can manage it.
Here, the Tengu led by their mighty samurai Hokibo struggle with Gok and his minions in the conifer shrouded forests of the northernmost of the Jwar Isles. They battle over the only clearing in the dense forest large enough to serve as a proper aviary for the Tengu. Out of a nearby ancient burial ground, the Cult creeps forward to deny the Tengu their foothold on this rich and beautiful land!
I think if I ever start building a cult of Yurei or Silvermoon Syndicate faction I’ll need to buy those shops and bunches of the yutei stalls and do a dark city street with back alleys.... and a sumo wrestling ring (I already printed out details on Howe to make the ring ).
Well if I can get the funds for next years adepticon together and finish it in time I’ll bring it.
One caveat though. If I can get it done and show up to adepticon then I’m renting Sumo suit (costumes) for whoever plays at that table to wear as they play . I would not need the suit as I am a natural born sumo wrestler, just too hairy.
Loving all of that terrain. the boards are great, but I adore the objective marker sets. The detail is great on both the stone and the lanterns.
I would love to start playing a game based in that era. I wanted to love Test of Honour, but couldn't quite. Bushido is just slightly too fantastical rather than historical for me.

Would love to see you there Theo. Assuming this year isn't a disaster, I'll be running a Bushido tournament again next year... hopefully at a little better time during the week (earlier). Perhaps we'll have to get two of the inflatable sumo suits and have ties decided by wrestling matches!

The basic kanji should be easily available (with translations) on-line. I'd love to see you take a whack at some of this stuff. Based on the job you did on the pirate ship, I think you'd be fantastic!
Fifty wrote:Loving all of that terrain. the boards are great, but I adore the objective marker sets. The detail is great on both the stone and the lanterns. I would love to start playing a game based in that era. I wanted to love Test of Honour, but couldn't quite. Bushido is just slightly too fantastical rather than historical for me.
Have you looked at "Kensai"? It's historical and might be more to your liking. Most of the buildings I buy are for Kensai and/or Test of Honor.
As always, thanks for your support gang. Have a couple of video battle reports to do, that water wheel mill to paint... maybe start working on my Oni now that I have a mighty 8 of them!
Yeah... a little different than the standard red. We'll see where it goes. I'll finish up that little guy with the club tonight which will give me a better idea of where I'm going with the war band.
Large sumo suits are hilariously good fun for a wrestling match. You will spend most of the time racing to be the first to stand up again so you can jump on the other.
Thing 2 painting a "Samurai Jack" Bushido character. The clock on the base was his idea (due to the time travel theme of the character / Jack's quest).
Working on a couple of extra buildings in case they're needed for the boards that other people are bringing. This is still WIP.
Hadn’t seen the watermill done up with close ups, thanks. I’m still thinking if I should get that set or not. I only need 1-2 boards for myself, so I don’t need the variety you have, but I still think it’s an awesome piece.
Honestly Theo, I didn't buy any of the buildings thinking that I had boards to fill, I just bought them because I thought they were cool and I like variety when I play.
My favorite buildings so far are the temple bell, hand washing station, the shops and this mill... though I won't know for certain until I finish it. I also love the little thatch roofed houses that I didn't have to paint at all. Victory for Zim! Wait... I think I just named all of my buildings... Oh well.
Had a fun game with my friend Tyler last night as we hashed out the board thing. Turns out I'm going to be one board short, but I think I can cover that with a minimum of fuss. We tested one of the new boards he just made along with a bunch of winter trees that I provided for cover. Here's a few pics from our game. These are just phone pics so please excuse the quality.
Here's the table. Not bad, though I just came up with an easy idea for providing some low cover (rather than just tall trees). Time for a walk in the woods... The table itself is beautifully done by Tyler.
My Tengu arrayed for battle. I was trying to come up with a fun list in case I have to fight the byes... This is an archery list that Thing 1 suggested. 4/6 of the army have some kind of ranged attack. Added are one minor spearman and a healer.
Tyler's Temple of RoKan. Including Kung-fu Panda (not named Po) and another master monk who IS named Po. Go figure.
The battle is joined early in the center where the panda bites it to a combination of small-arms fire and a massive spear thrust from "my bird".... Zenkibo. Probably the best 6 points I will ever spend in this game... he just constantly outperforms his point value. The panda used to be in that big gap a little up and to the left of my figures.
Awkward looking lady monk... but a nice paint job.
She would go on to engage my big samurai bird in combat, which effectively kept him out of the battle as he's no-where near as good a close combat combatant as he is an archer. Then she made the mistake of disengaging.... at which point my archer shot her through with a small tree branch and she died. I think this was Tyler's only real mistake during the game.
After eliminating KFP, everyone in the center gangs up on the monk to the left, killing him.
Not to be out done, Master Po (right) walks through two of my models (Zenkibo and Torobo) like they aren't even there... and my magic user in the robe (Sanjukubo) runs towards a different objective in an attempt to avoid certain destruction.
Master Po gloats... just a bit.
My shugenja, Sanjukubo, prepares to face down a little kami.
Here's where we were when we had to call the game due to store closing. I had earned the first of 3 victory points, am challenging the objective on the left, own the objective on the right and can harass his models in the center with ranged attacks. His big monk Po is very dangerous... but we both agree that the advantage is mine.
The end result was a fun game and a good run for the archery list. I'd need to get another figure to really do it... replacing Zenkibo with a "Scout of the Blue Gale" which is an archer of the same point value. Still, it was an interesting go. This is probably a more powerful list than I want to take to do byes with... so I'll make some changes suggested by Tyler & I should be all set.
I decided I needed some cover that wasn't also line-of-sight blocking or impassible, so I walked out into my yard and asked mother nature to contribute. She did most admirably.
I also discovered that I was going to be one board short... so I'm making a snow board. Might as well go back to she-what-brought-me... thus some snow-covered logs.
Here's the whole thing. I might tweak it a little bit but I'm kind of out of materials and ideas. I still need to make a set of 3 small objectives for it. Think I might just have come up with an idea...
Yeah, for the first time I actually tried putting a traditional pattern on a piece of cloth. I like it. It's very crude when compared to the real thing, but it gets the idea across well enough.
Did some painting last night. First, painted up some produce from Oshiro Model Terrain. These will augment my "market" themed table. Have a number of other like-themed things I'll be working on today... baskets, bins and such... but the produce is my favorite.
Also working on the next Onisho... Boba. He's throwing gremlin skulls. Adding the little gorinto was my idea... fits perfectly in his outstretched hand. Should have him finished up later today. Give the basing a second try, though I think I solved one problem by ringing the base before I actually add the grass. This should make everything look a bit more tidy.
I rather like him, but I agree the base needs something else. How about a mystical beast skull, one with tusks and horns (you say boba, I can't help but think fett... )
New video is up on my YouTube channel. A "Hobby Time" video on how to make fallen log terrain.
Did a fair amount of work this weekend. Painted a ton of scatter terrain from Oshiro Modelterrain (I think it's time for another scatter terrain video). Worked on Zuba (first real Oni to be painted), did the above video and even made my first attempt at making mushrooms. They will go on the logs featured in the video above. Also turned a wooden lantern into a 50mm objective. Will make one more of these for a nicely completed set!
Unfortunately the parts of Zuba that I've been working on are completely covered by the wall!
