Post by: Camkierhi
@ Grim, Yeah he is a bit on the big side, and the head is disproportionate, but he comes from a universe of mis-sized crazy stuff. So I hope he fits in really.
@ Shas Too true.
@ Gits, Thank you sir, and indeed, I hope he is that much cooler for being truly truescale huge on his hogzilla.
I am aiming for true scale imagery on these these days. my boys will be all shapes and sizes, my grots too. Warbosses are described in the fluff as close to 10 feet, so he has to be suitably huge. I think by the time I am finished with this little side clan army thing for the Snakebites he will fit perfectly.
Next I think I need to sort him out some lads....already sculpted up a basic boar, so going to see how that goes, cooking right now.
Thanks for the feedback guys much appreciated.

OK, so what is it?
There is an excellent idea floating about on DakkaDakka about a Dakka clan of orks.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/656634.page
I have done a Mek for the army. Well we where messing about with some ideas, and in particular a gentle giggle at the Australian Host. Orks with a theme maybe.
Now some of you know how I love to build stuff, just for the hell of it, andI am always honoured when someone will let me build them something.
So I have an idea....
This is going to be a Razorback Road Train display piece that may possibly pass for a battlewagon loosely.
So we need a big engine...
Then started on a sub frame assembly...
Then added a couple bits...
Lots more to do, including trailers that will be interchangable, and trying to make the cab look like a pig!
Quick disclaimer, I intend no insults to anyone ever with any of my work, I apologise if in any way any thing I do offends.
Anyway, providing KB likes it, he will get a gurt big trukk to display the boys on.
So what do you think people?

Thank you gentlepeeps.
Well the model-paint -model paint thing is down to some psychotic issue I have no doubt. I am like it in everything I do. In this case it is I want to paint the engine, and once it is in place no way I am going to get to it, so paint it now. You could argue since it might well end up that you can't even see the engine what's the point, well to a degree what's the point of building the engine, could do a GW and just tell you it has a nuclear reactor built into the hubs of the wheels or some such. I paint it because I know its there, even if no-one else will ever see it. The same way I prime all sides of a piece of skirting before I fit it. I know I have done the job right. A habit I have had all my life. So you see I have no idea how you all completely build a model then paint it, how the heck do you paint the back of the gun?
Sorry got carried away there, bit tired and silly....
Any ways, didn't like the bonnet soooo.........
Oh and of course it opens so you can see the engine....
Thanks guys please keep the comments coming, and I would really like to know how the heck you paint the back of a gun???
62749
Post by: Dr H
Camkierhi wrote:... and I would really like to know how the heck you paint the back of a gun???
Ah well, I do things both ways. Which is why I didn't comment about painting before assembly or painting things that won't be seen. When painting before assembly you need to have some clever ways to hold the pieces; pins and clips and gluing to pieces of sprue (what else?) for example. I don't like the paint things while they are on the sprue they are moulded with as leaving it on makes it tricky to remove the mould-lines, and if you don't remove them then (or miss one or two) you'll have to remove them afterwards, which will require some touching up of the paint; so why not paint it afterwards anyway. Painting things that are not going to be seen: I do this a lot and it stems from my Airfix etc. modelling where there is often hidden parts; interior details, engines etc. The joy of modelling, for me, is mainly in the doing rather than the finished piece. So the more modelling I can cram in to a model, the better. Even if some of that modelling will be hidden. However one trick, as demonstrated above, is to make parts removable so that the interior parts can be seen. An important thing to remember is to paint/model beyond where you think people can see. You don't have to go far, but further than you may at first think. This avoids problems later if you misjudged how much people may see, and more importantly it gives the impression of there being no end; if someone can pick up a model and turn it over and over, looking at every angle and can't see the end, the mind will fill in what can't be seen and the model gains that extra level. For example: if your model has some shark gills moulded into the surface. A model kit will often have these "holes" filled in and you would paint the "hole" part black, and that would look adequate. However, you could cut out the "hole" pieces and leave actual holes. Done neatly, this would look better. But on closer inspection you would see that the holes lead into an empty shell. You could then add a box that covers the inside of the hole and add some details (e.g. engine parts or pipes etc...). This gives something to look at inside the hole. However, there will always be an end to the box and total blackness. This will look great, but... ...If you build the entire engine inside the model, you can hold that model at any angle, shine a light in the hole and you will see no end to the detail. Also, you will get light spilling in through the other holes and illuminating the interior in a way that you don't get from any of the above. This will look excellent and very realistic. And more importantly, imagine all the fun of building the interior details, rather than just an empty box with black "hole" painted on. As for painting the back of a gun; I go for a black basecoat that gets into all crevices and then anything that I cannot get to to paint properly are "in the shadows" and remain black. Job's a good'un.

@ Red, heres a scale shot for you sir.......
It is a bit on the large side, but then it is not necessarily a game piece, but I think if I do it right I could maybe get the front end to be a counts as Battlewagon.
So started on the next bit, (read no self discipline!)
Stuck some bits together...
Added wheels, needs lots it is heavy....
And a few details, round bit on top is where I will be making the BIG GUN.

Here's something that will push that cannon over the hump that a lot of scratch-built Ork guns struggle with- get a smaller diameter tube and set it inside the barrel with putty, then smooth off the end (or just finish it Orky style).
Gun barrels, especially cannon barrels, are nowhere near as thin as tubing like that- they have to contain the pressure of the blast to direct it in the right direction.

Ta gents.
So how did I paint the barrel, well I aint no painter, but just in case here is how I painted it, again can't take any credit for this technique, stolen from various sources.
Primed black, then painted a goldy colour (I call it titanium) no idea, it is an old GW paint.
Next coppered in some parts...
Then drybrushed with Chainmail...
Then washed the whole thing blue....think it is vortex blue ...I watered it down a bit.
Then a sepia wash.....(this always washes the blue off certain areas!
Then Agrax Earthshade....
Quick drybrush with Runefang, added some greasy black marks..
And on its cradle,,,,which is very much WIP.
Hope that helps someone.

from the pics i am firstly overwhelmed by the sheer fun and cool look of the thing... very colourful and overall a beauty...
but we´re not only here to praise...i have two minor issues you could think about...
the green roof of the tractor looks...how to put it...wrong?...i think that colour somehow is maybe too bright or something else bugs me...
secondly...the wagons...the two axles each leave a very long part only supported by the stand in the front of each... do i make myself understandable here?... what i think the structure needs here is something support the weight and still makes it rolling... maybe a weight related smaller wheel?...dunno maybe i am a bit too picky here...
30672
Post by: Theophony
I love it , very crazy/orky. The roof does strike an odd color balance, but these are orks so green is to be expected. Throw some boys on there for us to see and it will really come together. I also see what Vik means by the support piece, the baggage cars look like 18 wheeler trailers, which at rest look just like that, but when moving usually have the wheels of the rig underneath to support the load.
maybe make little support wheel vehicles that can seperate off and be like scout cars when they park, but when the caravan moves they lock in underneath that section.

Personal brainfart:
Still working on train but...
Going to do a dio for this months painting contest, but it I am going to take my time (you know more than 24 hours) and do it my way and them. It will not be a nice dirty space marine (seems to be the in thing!) but it will have a marine in it. And for once I am going to tell you all about it....
The title of the comp is "Relic". Going to do a Freebooter Kaptain, a relic in his own rite! Covered in stolen armour pieces, the odd Relic thrown in there, oh and he will be huge. Kuz only da biggestist gets to be Kaptain. He will have a sword thrust aloft and on that sword will be a SM skewered. He will have a bionic peg leg. And a bloomin silly big hat and a squig on his shoulder, and covered in old fashioned guns.
So now is were you all give me your thoughts and any ideas you may have, or I will accept the silence as the final nudge nudge wink wink, that I have gone too far and should shut up.

but i am by far a man impervious to self doubt...whenever i lost (read didn´t win) a comp i doubt my own abilities...we all dab in the arts...and that is a way of opening our inner being to the world...and the world is able to caress or stomp us...mostly the world though is not even aware of our exstince...and we feel stomped by a purpose that isn´t even there... i try to remember that no one is actually stomping me on purpse when i don´t achieve what i was going for...even as an adult that is one hell of a feat to accomplish...and it takes every ounce of self conciousness...best way to survive s get into another contest! hell yeah!
speaking of...the idea sounds cool...i want to see that done!
and i really like the new roof on your trukk...the gaz barrels and all the other additions, and crew are really cool too!

... I am sat in the bath just now ...
Good thing too. You're a lovely chap, but there are things we don't need to see.
You can only truly ask the best from someone (or yourself), and that is dependant on the individual.
What results from that is down to that person's experiences more so than any innate talent. If someone spends every hour of every day doing a skill, they are going to be able to produce something that exceeds what can be produced by someone else that only manages to work on that skill occasionally.
This does not mean the second person is bad at that skill, they just need more practice, and practice takes time.
It's easy to look at someone else's work, compare it to your own and think that you are going nowhere, or are bad at it. This is not how it should be done: Look at your own past work, and compare it to now. The only time to get worried is if your current work doesn't meet your past quality (so get out there and do something about it ). In all other cases you should see that you have improved.
One other thing on that; If your work appears to have reached a plateau. Do not despair. You have reached a good base level, NOT your peak. Now is the time to learn something new and build upon that good base. You can always improve, if you want to (and are not too lazy to try), because everyone can improve; even those at the top of the tree.
This does not mean avoiding better artists and their seemingly unattainable skills. It means being critical of your own work and spotting where their's is better; then you can learn how to achieve that to move your work forward.
There will always be someone better than you for everyone except the one person that is at the top, and remember that that one person has to run just to stand still. You have an advantage over that person, you have something to aim for.
Aim to be the best that you can be, not the best of the best, and you will always win.
And when it comes to art in particular, NEVER say that you can't do this or that. What you mean to say is that you fall short of being able to achieve a product that you have seen someone else produce. Have you worked for as long and as hard as that person had to produce that work? No, you have not. The best artists have failed more times than you have tried, that is why they have "succeeded" where you have "not".
Get back to work.

Advice: don't stay in the bath too long or you'll prune up something rotten...
We all go through the hobby doldrums though for various reasons - but I can well relate to what you're feeling and is why I backed out of competitions for quite a while. I just enter the ones I'm interested in now and have an urge to actually make / paint something for it. If I'm not digging the theme I don't take part... I also make / paint for me, so I don't care anymore about whether I win or get the wooden spoon - as long as I like what I've done, then I'm golden

Since he is going to be a big lad and a pirate he needs to have a chest of booty, maybe a chest full of marine helmets that he has a Kaptain Morgan leg stood up on. British men take baths instead of showers? Yuck. Well, at least you bath, unlike your neighbors to the east (or so the rumors go...)
A bit of advice: Stop painting Orcs and Marines for a while. It makes how many years you've been painting those? Get something very different, something outside of your comfort zone, something that you won't fall into routines while painting.
Have you hear of Otherworld minis? They are in the UK. Some cool stuff based on the original AD&D Monster Manual. Or something, anything else. It will encourage you to experiment.

it´s a great looking model mate! my wife loved it, when i showed it to her...she also stated it is a bit too colourful...take that with your pinch of salt as you see it but you are asking to be picked apart so i will add my own little nit pick here... it´s the coat...the backside of the kaptain still looks like dough...i would strongly recommend you to sand it all smooth down or to add a thin and helpful layer of GS...to make some creases and so on...this is the only weak point of the model i can see...
as for the beard... why not add just a wash and have him a white beard?...the hilt looks btw very nice...didn´t dream of using such a pice for that part would look that good! (the blade with the marine is atm only bluetacked on...right? otherwise the bendy position is a bit akwaard... ) Automatically Appended Next Post: oh...and i see no point for not entering that lovely piece to the comp...but that´s up to you and whether you want to avoid getting bloody nose and all then...

I'd agree with Vik - the major weak spot is the jacket. Looks too lumpy at the moment. The orky skin on the gun arm is lovely though, especially like the redness around the tubes...

Post by: Viktor von Domm
Hard to tell if you initially planned the coat that way or if you got lucky ideas on the way through...but I like the patched up look now very much and the shoulderpad shields are a wonderful idea too! The cartoony look is without reference to my wife, but for me it totally works. It is a bit more gory than I would have expected, but I was always imagine ultra smurfs as rather bloodless folks the kaptain barbarossa is a stunning piece and with his fellow lol companion he reminds me of that expensive games day(?) Waagh boss with his grot....
62749
Post by: Dr H
Good work, Cam'.
The patches are a good addition.
For critique I'll say work on smoothness for next time; in painting and sculpting.
Your skin looks good and smooth, but the blue of the SM's armour is not as smooth. I think it stems from the Ork painting, which your style works well for.
So, as a side project I think you should go for something that requires clean, smooth painting and focus on that. It'll be a nice change of pace and will help you in all painting.

So, it's a Half-Orc?
That's a crazy amount of detail on one base, good sir. A feast for the eyes. Very much enjoyed. And great texturing on the coat. I do dislike super smooth surfaces, and super smooth paint jobs. It makes the mini look like a plastic toy.
Now, to be TFG. If you are going to try and improve the painting skills, may I suggest less elaborate projects so that you may focus on techniques and all that paintery stuff?

Excellent work from start to finish. Making smooth cape is hard, but I think this is more a pace of work than actual skill.
You made this thing from start to finish rapidly and crafted almost all of it. That is AMAZING.
However, I think to get us smooth lovers out of the way you just need to take your time and smooth before you step onward.
Your painting is going well and clearly shows brush skill. I think a lot of what you are lacking is simple techniques that everyone uses to get expected results. The solution is to watch youtube videos and practice on things you don't own so you don't have to live with the results. You know? Knock over the local game store and stuff. It's what I do, well local friends get a "free" paint job. Ha.

@ Vik, Thank you sir. Typical of you to spot that. He is magnetised at waist , gun arm and sword hilt. Main reason is ease of painting, but also for instance the sword will be a weak point, this way its just a magnet.

The Kaptain looks quite orkish indeed! How did you get the space marine on the sword? I'd assume you split the sword, but maybe there's a different method I don't know about. The Trukk is amazing looking with the hot rod front and train feel. I assume this would just be a terrain piece? It's quite big for playing.

Thought I would answer some of your amazing posts.
@ Gits, Ruglud, Nerdy, Low_K and EDC....thank you guys, I very much appreciate your support, it means a lot to me.
@ cormadepanda.......Thank you, and I try, but patience is my enemy, and I get upset over sillyness.
@ JustaerinAt TheWall.....Thank you, yes the sword is split, though you could easy dremel a hole through the marine. And the Landtrain is now with its new owner in Australia, gave it to KB_Lock for a display piece for his Dakka Dakka Clan project. Could easily be used as a piece of terrain in game, but if you wanted to you could break it down and maybe get away with calling it a Battlewagon.
@ Nerdy...........I am trying the flesh tone thing on the orks, not really getting it to convey itself on pictures though. Think I may try some experiments.
As to next, well working on too many things at mo, but need to focus. Got a couple tank ideas, and an orky outpost idea, still trying to sculpt some nice pigs, might actually be getting there on that one! So something will appear here shortly. Need to find my mojo jojo, ran off someplace.

Well been a while, need to get an orky something going, bit of fun, so made this ages ago and been sat looking at me for a long time, let's get something done with it.
Built up a plynth for it. Going for a ruined something, the orks have commandeered to build the statue on...
Then got to adding a bit more to the actual bust itself....
Going to have a few Grots building it still, can just be a dio, or could be used in game as an objective, or even dangerous terrain, mess with it and you will get Grotted.
Anyways, Thanks for looking, please leave a thought.

Bit of progress...
Went for mossy ancient steps, I quite like it.
Popped a bit of rust on top of a metallic base coat on the iron plate the statue will sit on...
And then was building up the bronze...
First Silver then Gold ...
Then a white wash...
The idea is the future washes will not just be over the gold, they will hit the white and be deeper.
And after a sepia wash...
Thanks for looking.

Thanks all, really means a lot to me.
OK so, Solar and Dave, there is no paint on this yet, not sure if you just mean the modelling, in which case here you go...
It is Foam core.
Remove one side of the paper..
Carve a little with a knife...
Take a pointy object and scratch in some cracks..
A very brief flash of heat...
Glue it in place. I have advised many times about the dangers of heat and flames and plastics, do not do it unless very comfortable with your environment. But this is very much a nano second of a flash of flame at the foam. Added benefit it will not melt when I spray it.
Also got this for £4 at Home Bargains (equivalent to dollar store I guess)..
Nice little organiser...
Oh and did a few of the bits for the "base"...
Thanks for looking in.
Again, WARNING I am an idiot who puts live flames to polystyrene in my house, be a more responsible adult than me and do anything like that outside. Or not at all. Probably best. But it is how I do it I am afraid.

Stage is looking set, just missing the wires and cables a rock band uses so much. Any chance of fireworks set up?

Thanks bud...
OK Vik how I made a Hot Glue Banner...
Take a sheet of baking sheet/greaseproof paper..
Put on the top of the banner across...
Put some downward runs, try and make them seperatem though if your glue is hot it will become one lump...
Then using a scrapper, I have these cheap metal ones, I start at the top and drag down over, dont press too hard....
Should be like this...
Then trim it up a bit and peal it off the paper...
Start painting...
End up with this...
Admittedly I did heat the tip of a knife and "sculpt" the glue a little around the top to get the folds in a little better, and also the back will always be flat from the paper, though I guess you could turn it over and add more glue..
It remains flexible, takes paint well, and for my purposes here, where these will probably be hanging on walls, they are perfect, cheap and chearful.
Oh and got a couple of the guys started on the band...
Thanks for looking, hope someone finds it useful.

That's fantastic Cam. As bad as your year was, you still manage to model and paint with unbridled joy and humor. Says so many good things about you. Don't give up on yourself. Love to see the new techniques you've included... the OSL from the spots is great. I think the drummer on the big orange kettles is my favorite! Wonderful work!

Great job. Lots of details and nice feeling of movement.
The only thing I may have done differently is the lighting/ osl, not that there is something wrong with your's, just as an alternative.
I'd have painted the majority of the piece in dark tones and painted the areas in the spotlights in normal colours/tones. That thought just came to me so I couldn't have said earlier, we can all try and remember it for next time we do osl on a diorama...

Braveheart, good sir! Insanity and ingenuity start with the first to letters for a reason(Probaly for some dumb grammar rule, but let's not, shall we?)! The OSL is pretty good, and I might inquire as to how you got this effect. Perhaps a quick spray of yellow at the right angle?
Thanks for everything my dude,
JATW.
65595
Post by: Camkierhi
Thank you all for the wonderful comments, it''s a tough competition, and everyone else produced excellent work that is actually terrain, not a dio masquerading.
@JATW The OSL is a technique stolen from the the ever inspirational Klaus not Santa, once everything was in place, gave it a light dusting of white at the appropriate angle and then yellow. I also dropped some black wash behind them to form shadows where I wanted them. Hope this helps.

OK, every time I have a bit of GS left over I have been adding a bit to this....

i feel awkward to say this but it needs to be said...that squigg looks adorable! and the option to make a million of these...
what i would suggest tho would be to have the legs separate to alter the pose there...but other than that...simply splendid!
