I just finished reading all 80 pages (rereading 30 or so since I lost my place a year ago) of this wonderful blog. I love your work and your unique style. Your vehicles are so truly orky and skillfully made. What a like more than anything is what a great job you do representing ork lore and fluff. If I wasn't so impressed, I might be annoyed that so many of the good ideas that I have had, I find out you had around a year earlier than I thought of them, and you have already completed them beautifully
-I love that your ork army is smaller clan based armies just like I'm doing. Speaking of which, I'm very impressed with your Snakebite Warboss on the boar.
-I love that you created giant true scale warbosses, I'm doing that too (tho not as well as you). I like your huge bosses with the flails, and really like your Pirate Ork Boss
-I also like your squiggoth. I have some work posted on that in my own project blog.
-I'm really impressed with your Morkanaught, I didn't think anything too impressive could come from the pieces you started with. Your end product is superior to the ones you can buy from GW
In conclusion, you are an amazing ork mekboy greater than orkimedes, I hope you wont feel like I'm copying you horribly if you ever check out my blog, and I'm looking forward to getting back to reading your other blog now that I've caught up on this one.

The Storm Crow is looking cool. Even though there are standard parts in it, I'm having trouble visualizing the size. When you have time could you take a shot with that ork you use for scale?

Cam, please, get a less cluttered background. Have mercy on an old man's eyes.
I love the use of the biker minis as wing gunners. Beautiful stuff.
But do at least put up a sheet of paper behind the mini for these photos. Get a piece of poster board, white or light gray and keep it just for background.

Been away from my orksess for a bit now. I am into insane large projects of other natures at mo, however I have a truly insane desire to make a Mega Gargant, so can anyone tell me the rough dimensions.
Current thinking is 18" square base and abour 24" tall.
116601
Post by: Syro_
Oh man, this is going to be epic!
I found this ork walker size comparison chart made by "Krooza", which suggests a Mega Gargant being 21" tall and it looks like around 26" at its widest part of the base.
43709
Post by: boundless08
Okay, my mind went a bit askew when I seen this and went down a deep internet rampage and now I think I understand what scale modelling actually means, but we'll see
So I found a lovely old picture and based my findings off that
So it was very hard to find an exact size anywhere for an ork mega gargant but luckily it's easy enough to find scale diagrams for imperial titans because some people like to do those things
So from this we can see the imperator titan is 60m high but from the above image the mega gargant comes up to the head of the titan, around 35-40 metres. Since 40k is in 28mm scale we're at a real life ratio of 1:58. Lets say it's 40 metres, to allow for maximum awesomeness, we divide the 4000cm by 58 which leaves us with 68.9655172414.... lets say 69. 69cm in inches is 27 inches! Wow, who said maths can't be fun!
I'd say you're pretty dead on with the 18W + 24H, they're nearly as wide as they are tall.
EDIT: Or you could just be Syro who can google better than me slipped in while I was typing this

With those gantries/walkways, and the large opening to the front right, this could be the secfet planet-based ship-killing mega-gun that has been keeping the Imperial Fleet from reinforcing Dagon VI! The Orks of Navarone!
Seriously, you could build a massive cannon to fit that space- or even a rokkit on a launch rail, with white-coated Ork scientists standing all around looking puzzled whilst the grot explains everything!

That ork sail-buggy should be made 'official lore' immediately.
no kidding dude, that is EXACTLY how a genuine fascination with going faster fasta would end - clinging onto the fuel tank of a very powerful jet engine with some rudimentary aerodynamics for 'steering'
also the mega gargant is mental!!
Although not entirely unexpected...

Say the phrase “side tracked” and expected some sort of tracked vehicle, but that truck you build looks pretty good. The suspension/undercarriage in particular looks barebones but believable. Kind of hard to get a sense of scale for it though, where are the wheels from?
116601
Post by: Syro_
It's amazing what you whip up in a brief day of being sidetracked. I like the look of it, and am thinking along the lines of Anvildude, it looks like a little utility truck of some sort to me.

The Mega Gargant looks like it will be enormous and propa Orky. I'd love to make one of my own. Some day.
I was confused by your second photo of the "side tracked" WIP for a bit. That front angle part seemed to have disappeared in photos # 3 & 4, and then there was a cab covering that beautiful engine... but oh wait, the entire cab is on a hinge! WHAT.
Not sure if intentional, but the "side tracked" vehicle reminds me of Mater from the Cars movies...

So just how many Orky weapons are you able to get your hands on? Because I'm kinda envisioning an armory that's just... messily bursting with stuff and gubbinz and choppy and shooty fings.
Also, I really appreciate the thick walls on the belly-gun barrels. But are those like, shell tips sticking out of it? It might just be odd paint, but I hope you're keeping it more 'realistic' in that sense- too many scratchbuilt Gargants use, like, cardboard tubes for gun barrels.

Well you see I plan on it being able to come to bits to some degree so you can play games, say a weird spacehulk scenario "in" it, kinda thing. Yes you would end up with it laid out across a table, but would be like playing through the beast. As well as a slightly large apoc model. I actually intend either giving it away or selling it if anyone would buy it. Shipping might be a bit of a problem though.
So not much done today so far, but settling down to a session now. Here is where I am at right now.
And this is the next room on top of the other. 3rd level up.
Going to add walls etc, and then this can be removed, along with the 2nd level grid to allow access to the 1st level armoury. This one might be an armoury too, not sure yet.
Thanks for looking, much appreciated.

@ Waaazag. I hear you on the size. Might look at it again later. See what you think of arm swaps below.
@ Shas Thank you.
@ Dr H. Thank you and sorry, about the way I post things sometimes, just like for people to see the process some times.
First is a shot of a LED mounted in the bottom of the cab.....(blooming impoossible to get a decent shot of.....
Then there is the last combat arm.....
And some of it is interchangable.....
The new arm is a hydrolic spikey thing. I think of the dredd grabbing with the claw then spearing it and the hydrolics tearing the spike into it's victims.
Thoughts?
Also Got the shooty bit to decide on, what do people think I should go with. Originally thought Rokkit rack on roof when I make it. But now I am not sure, maybe a skorcher between its legs!! Or just mounted low on his left. Your thoughts would be helpful here.
As to over all size, he currently stands 8cm ( 3" ) Tall to the top of the body. Exhausts and arms extend everything everywhere.
Thanks for looking in and c&C very much appreciated.

Thank you all very much.
@ Walord_ky Thank you, been a while since then.
@ Everyone else thanks guys really appreciate the comments.
Gear box and engine management systems.....cheating, it's all in a box.....
Not sure about this, was meant to be out the back, as on the mega gargant there is a "3rd" wheel arrangement out the back, was going to make this the main drive and have this engine and gearbox as the guts of it. Trouble I have is I originally planned to have it in line but that is coming out a bit big....
So probably plan B, going to mount it like this and have a couple pully wheels and a belt between....
Got to add a couple hubs and drive shafts coming out of the gearbox. And then set up some rear tracks.
The drive for the side tracks will be in the "hidden" in the housings above the track sections with appropriate exhausts out the back.
I have started work on the front main gun deck, just the beams and supports at the moment, this will be on the 6th level, still trying to work out if I do much for the 5th level yet, maybe another room.
Thank you all for looking and comments are wonderful and gratefully received.

I think the top mount is a cool idea, especially with the belt idea.
36940
Post by: Anvildude
Oh yeah, that'll be awesome. Could then put a little tangle/rat's nest of beams under the rest of the engine as a 'support' for it. Maybe make a little grot nest or something in there, too.

that grot looks amazing....
one minor thought...the engine is using a belt...i think such a massive vehicle would rather use something like tanktracks? as what on earth could be as sturdy for a belt as any leather or rubber? so i have to admit i have no knowledge whatsoever when it comes to motor/ engines...

Post by: CommissarKhaine
Here I spend lots of time cutting up grotz to make unique ones, and you just sculpt them out of gs... On a more uplifting thought ( ) : that engine looks awesome! I 'd try to add some more depth to the purple-ish oil spills on top, or maybe just some gloss varnish, but other than that, it's truly jaw-droppingly amazing!

@ Vik, I am kinda with you on the belt thing, still thinking it over, but I find it a bit of a laugh to have it rubber band driven.
@ CK, Agreed on the oil, so added some glossy purple and green nail polish...
Glossy oil...
Rear track sections
Painted and fitted...
And kinda in situ..
And update on the sculpt, bottled it when it came to the hands this time...
Bit of scale creep I am afraid, I am happy enough to go wth an older grot, longer life from living in the gargant,
Thank you for looking and all C&C most welcome.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
i think the scale creep is fully ok, as grots are a bitoff scale anyway...it´s their appeal in my opinion...they´re regular igors...
also...been thinking quite a bit about the belt...and chains, tracks wouldn´t work...too much pull on the individual segments...so your riveted ( ) belt is the better idea!!

Well thank you all,
@ Syro, just a bit of square rod stock, heated with a lighter, and bent, then the end flattened with pliers and a snip in the middle to form the claw.
I will get organised here in a minute. For now, throw this little repair grot bot together for the exterior of the gargant. Going to have him somewhere away to make repairs.
Not quite finished but close. He is meant to be a bit slap dash, after all they would not really spend much effort on a grot suit to go out and repair the hull.
Thanks for looking folks.

I think the word Vik has been searching for as a new level of awesomeness is “Camkierhi”. I think you’ve just been “Googled” and your name will now also become a verb meaning
Camkierhi: 1. to make artwork at such awesome levels of skill and with such creativity and speed that it surpasses any other humanly pronounceable word.
2. To be the basis for all thinks both Orky and Grotty.
3. To be a great friend and supporter of others here on DakkaDakka

Well Firstly thank you all for the kind words, hoping desperately to have not lost my audience.
RL kicking my butt, but that's not for here.
ORKS!!
Spent some time trying to get my juices flowing, part of which was to carve out a little desk space for a painting zone.
And in the tradition of Cam, here is a helpful tip I think I might have shared before,....
Ages ago I watched a youtube and the guy said the most brilliant words I have heard in years....STIR your paint, don't shake it. I have a lot of the GW paints and mix paints into small jars etc, and I remember the words of wisdom very well. I no longer suffer the eternal issue of paint clogging up the lid, wasting paint that sticks to the lid, can't unscrew pot lid cus of paint, these are all behind me. But to help this along I did a little bodging..
Took a electric coffee stirrer, modified it a bit and hey presto, I get perfect paint every time.
Because it was a little too powerful, I replaced one battery with a copper wire and this has slowed it down perfectly.
Thank you so much for looking, I hope to resume normal service shortly.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
Yes...cam is secretly mc gyver....wouldn't have thought that it could work with reduced ampere...hmmm...
Hoping here RL issues are not too grave...best wishes!
72556
Post by: Red Harvest
Here's to a speedy and happy resolution to all RL issues.
Meanwhile: an electric coffee stirrer? Is that really a thing? I like your re-purposing of it much better. Paint is like a martini, better stirred than shaken. ( Bond, James Bond was an ignoramus. )
And good start on the boyz.

Fantastic.

Cool tip - and saves on agitator beads too! I think I will be using this in the future, although probably sans electric coffee stirrer, modified or not. Does it make a real difference to manual stirring?
Oh, Orks (Orcs?) are coming along nicely too. Face in particular.
116601
Post by: Syro_
It's hard to imagine you loosing your audience Cam. I had totally forgotten about your little electric paint stirrer, i think I do remember you sharing far back in your blog, but I'm glad you shared it again. And your tinkering with it is genius, I don't understand electricity well enough to think of stuff like that.

True Ork fashion, not only did they loot one battery out of the coffee stirrer, but they looted the stirrer as well .
Fun fact my auto correct changed Ork into PRO , they knew I was in Cam’s thread.
The only way to loose this audience is for you to change directions while our jaws are on the floor .

Post by: Red Harvest
Well, Gits, Cam built a windmill, a working windmill. I suppose the stirrer -- Still dumb-founded that such a thing exists. How lazy can a person be? -- could have any number of uses. I suspect he'll astound us with something.
He always does
62749
Post by: Dr H
I've always stirred my paints. But I just use old paintbrush handles (previously lengths of sprue).
Shaking would do nothing to some of my paints; some can be turned upside-down for quite a while without "leaking" through an open top.
Great work on the Ork, Cam'.
