Anyway i killed a crocodile with my bare hands and apparently women don't find that attractive.

I completely agree with motivational poster above.

I thought I knew stupid, and then I saw those two macros.

Melodrama aside, claiming that men are absurdly simple is rather insulting to the masculine gender. So no man has any depth to his character? Pardon my misuse of the phrase, but bollocks to that.

edit: As a side note, let's not post these moronic and sexist image macros, my report finger isn't itchy anymore so there's no point of tempting it.

Actually its kinda of right. men are dull and boring alot. They are either a jock, nerd, or an iduiot, or intelliegent, or all 4

I have depth to my character, it's just that a lot of people who know me can't dive that deep; they just prefer to float on the surface and paddle around in the shallows of my being.

As opposed to women who fit into very similar categories? Cheerleaders, nerds, party girls, dedicated career women... if you want to toss labels around, one can do that for either gender.

No, the assumption is assuredly wrong.

Oh FFS, I would have assumed that most people would see the simple humour in the posts and not take them entirely at face value, believe me ...I don't see things in such simplified terms and was merely having a bit of fun.

However...if you honestly believe that a simple picture is some how indicative of some deeper misogynistic intent, then by all means let your itchy finger be your guide.

I'm not offended, just annoyed. Kinda like I'm annoyed at my kitten when he hides under my bed in the morning then attacks my heels when I get down. Sure, it's cute (the image macros I mean), but it's still annoying.

I personally think that these stereotypes come about not because men actually have less depth, but because in general, we are more reserved. Society sez that men shouldn't cry and sob our story out, whereas if a girl needs to weep her story out to her friends in public, that's fine. I know that I, personally, am very reserved and, well, shy. The longer you hang out with me, the better you'll get to know me. I know some girls who, once initial contact is made, will feel just fine telling you their life story, and are very open about themselves. That is not the case with me.

Actually it's more to do with the assumption that men think with their penis (thus the on/off switch).

Most people keep their brains between their legs.

I swear, the gays have it easy. They don't have to decipher what, at times, feels like a secret code.

Terrorist?...is this a common assumption these days?
Admittedly I've been "out of circulation" for some time...but I don't recall myself or anyone I've know being accused of being a terrorist,an donkey-cave perhaps, but never a terrorist.

Donkey cave?...how..quaint.

I've been accused of being a hardline stalker before, but but I doubt i'm terrorist material to most people.

If only people took the time to get to know me... Ha! Who am I kidding, I can't understand why I actually believed people would get to know me before they judged me.

But...being judged before someone gets to know you is fairly commonplace.

We all make assumptions based on what we see and perceive from another person to some degree or another, even if it's unintentional.

If you go on a job interview, you a partialy judged by your appearance, and the same is true in the "Romantic world."

Is that necessarily "Fair"...probably not,but...it's true.

I was around in the 70's,although I was much more interested in playing with my GI Joes and Star Wars figures then I was in trying to meet girls.
I "Blossomed" in the 80's,and thanks to my uber spiffy mohawk hairstyle and the fact that I was in a band, girls were just always around....

...Sometimes I think life was easier when I was crawling around in the dirt playing with my GI Joes.

Me: Hey when I get home me and you should go out one night.
Her: Yeah, I'd like that!
(the "date" came around and turns out to be me, her, and three of her friends...)
Me: um... not what I had in mind.
Her: What do you mean?
Me: I thought you understood I was asking you out, ya know, on a date.
Her: Oh, I had no idea. No let's just stay friends.

OK! Lesson learned: When asking a girl out SPECIFICALLY say these words ~ I would like to take you out for an evening of socializing and such so that we may further our relationship more than just friends because I have feelings of affection for you. More than just friends. Therefore reiterating how I feel for you. This also implies that it will be just me and you. That means it is a social function between 2 people. In this case, 1 male (that's me) and 1 female (that's you). This does NOT mean bring more than what I have just said.

There's no way they can misinterpret that!

That could turn into " Your trying to keep me away from my friends..you fething control freak!!" so fast, it might make your head spin.

Not saying that's "common" of "all" women...but hey,it has happened.

I swear, my life. Took until the fourth time where I broke it down to this simple question:

"You. Me. Date. Up for it?"

Then she finally realized. Good god. Of course, by then, she had planted me firmly in the friend zone.

Yeah but I guess this was her train of thought:

"Yeah we should hang out, and by hang out I mean tell you to meet me somewhere along with 5 other people where I will say one thing to you and that's it. Then you could just stand around and listen to a conversation I'll have with another person."

Yeah... hanging out... fun.

Hard enough going home to my family and not being to fit into their conversations because I have seen them in forever, I have nothing to say that would relate to anything they are talking about. So, even harder when talking to someone you have only known for a couple years and haven't seen them in a while.

Hahaha.

I don't know about y'all, but hanging out to me implies a sense of togetherness. As in we are doing something together, not me listening to you carry on a stupid conversation with your other friends about your guy troubles. "Ugh, why can't I just find a guy who won't give me any drama?" Well sweetheart he's sitting right next to you, but now's he getting up to go smoke a cigarette... and now he's leaving!

Melissia wrote:"Hanging out" is a term I use for going with friends. Not a romantic date.

When I asked her out that time the words "hang" and "out" never came out of my mouth. Ok, well I said "out" but it was in conjunction with "go" as in "going out" as in "a date".

But even when we "hang out" it means "ignore him and talk to other friends" when she was the one who invited me...

I hate that XD. I specifically ask someone on a date and they bring all of their friends. Then I take them aside and say "What the Gak? I thought you and I were going to be on you know a date.. Alone... Without an audience. Sorry girl, but I don't care where you are from, that was more planner than the sky above."

I finally work up the courage to ask someone out, Friday comes around, and we have a nice night. At the end she tells me "I have to feed my cat". I'm not the most social person, but come on, I'm not a fething idiot. We're still friends, and of course now I know that she doesn't even have a cat. And this is from one of the most straight forward and honest girls I know!

Ok, here's a question: when did merely asking a girl out become such a heinous act that said girl complains to her parents to make them switch their habits up, to the point of avoiding any and all areas that I would even be remotely "known" to go to?

Aye, that I seem to. It's a shame, because she was rather beautiful.

Another thing came up, though: why do people (of both sexes) seem to think that if your a chick, and you marry a dude, you can't talk to other dudes anymore? A friend of mine is getting married, and me and her talk fairly often. I tell her about DCUO, a pretty fun game we could play together, and her response?

should have just said this back on this post, but: If you mean me and her, no, I would not think of myself as abusive, I just talk to her, ask her how things are going, whats up at college, you know, stuff like that. The only time she has ever been crying while talking to me was when I was arguing with a mutual friend (who introduced us at a party where much fun followed), because he was acting like a total ass to her.

As for Her and Him, I don't know, she seems pretty happy with him, from what I have heard. As for how good my opinion is.....

This thread reminded me of a quote I saw on the internet once, so I dug it up to share.

A woman has a close male friend. This means that he is probably interested in her, which is why he hangs around so much. She sees him strictly as a friend. This always starts out with, you're a great guy, but I don't like you in that way. This is roughly the equivalent for the guy of going to a job interview and the company saying, You have a great resume, you have all the qualifications we are looking for, but we're not going to hire you. We will, however, use your resume as the basis for comparison for all other applicants. But, we're going to hire somebody who is far less qualified and is probably an alcoholic. And if he doesn't work out, we'll hire somebody else, but still not you. In fact, we will never hire you. But we will call you from time to time to complain about the person that we hired.

And I don't understand anything.

I don't get when a girl, gets a boyfriend... and then within a few days is like "OMG I love him so much <3". Then they're like oh F' all my haters and blah me and him forever. Then they break up, and then the girl goes on a mission to kill happiness for her and everyone around her. Then shortly after will talk about her ex's new girlfriend is a lesser creature and goes on and on. Or how she's so much better than any girl, like if she's a queen.

Just the sheer fact, that most of time guys are labeled as jerks, asses, etc. Yet, most of the time, it's usually the girl who's insecure, unstable, or over reactive. They're usually a lot more clingy, move way to fast, and spread lies like the plague.

Maybe it's just my generation. I really don't know... but my God the 14-18 range seems to be all the same.

Drones... all drones. Fueled by MTV and pure unadulterated filth.

I entered into a "no-drama" clause with a girl. Our friends are trying to get us together, and pulling each of us off to the side to whisper advice and directions into our ears, confident that the other side will never hear. We both got sick of it and have told each other everything. It's actually kind of fun. We're still good friends, and she is probably getting more enjoyment out of this then I am!

I just have tons of friends ranging from different ages.

There's the ones that are classy, the ones that are easy, and then there's the annoying ones.

The younger girls don't know what they want.

The middle ones kinda do, but are still downright confused.

Then the older ones, are usually already with child.

It's also not really if I think I can sleep with them, it's more if I choose to and not too. But seeing how most of the younger crowd is nowadays I rather not.

I mean, when was it alright for every kid by the age 14-16 to be come a pothead/chain smoker and an alcoholic?

Huh? My last girlfriend's friend were a bunch of sods who hated me for the simple reason that I was taking away her time from them . I just hate people who prove stereotypes is all or think that they can get away with doing what they want at the expense of others. Semi pychotic people generally seem to be easier to get on with (with a little effort) and less two face. ^^

And just because they believe doesn't mean it's not true. See what I did thar. I agree that the traditional views of women can be stupid sometimes, but poll the universe and ask if men or women are more complex. There's not much wiggle room on that one. And if you're using the "people are stupid" argument, you are a person too... but I don't think you're stupid. I know it's frustrating to have people saying things that sound ignorant to you, but there's a good chance they're saying it from personal experience so you can't expect much more.

I know it's from personal experience.

The thing is, my personal experience says otherwise, thus my more moderate viewpoint. Men are just as complex and interesting as women, which is to say that there's a segment of men who are boring dolts just like there's a segment of women who are air-headed turds.

I'm not directing this at Melissia but I often get irritated on Dakka when I see people say things like "Wow, people at my school are so stupid", "my town is full of stupid people" etc. Some people seem to think they're superior to other people in their real life and have some kind of elitist attitude. The thing I don't understand out of personal experiences.

The boy likes a girl, and he tells her how he feels about her. The two of them grow towards each-other and start to cuddle each-other. After a while, the boy wants to prove it, and kiss the girl. He waits until the end of school, but just in the last hour of the school-day, the two of them sit next to each-other in a computer class. The boy goes online on facebook and reads that, from this day, the girl has a relationship with someone else.

This happened to me. Today.

The boy goes online on facebook and reads that, from this day, the girl has a relationship with someone else.

This happened to me. Today.

She didn't tell you about this guy at all?

Either you two weren't that close or she is a bitch.

I think she's just a bitch. Everytime we had free time as school, she came to me, and wanted me to hug her and all. I really though she felt the same way.

Well, it's gonna be hard for me to get over her...

could be. I just switched school, and now, I kinda only hang out with girls. But all of them, except said girl, are just 'ugh'. I can't stand one of them, the other looks like a troll, two others are in a grade higher than me, and the rest had boyfriends.

Yes and no. People always like attention, and bikinis get attention. On the other hand, women who might prefer not to wear a bikini are also under stupid amounts of pressure (both from other women, men, and the media as well) to 'look good' rather than 'feel comfortable.'

The result? Unhappy women in bikinis, complaining about men perving at them.

More likely, because it is impossible to undo centuaries of public opinion in a few short decades. Equality of all kinds will take time.

Mind you, I would rather see a world where it is wrong to hit men and women, rather than one where it is OK to hit either. I disagree with real life violence- I prefer to keep it in the context of pro wrestling and action movies.

Hey if you don't make it a problem, then it won't be one-at least not one that'll result in fights. Hey I'm still friends with my ex girlfriend who I dated for two years, somewhat because some of my best friends are also friends with her, despite her becomming pretty much a slut-not me being an ass, ref foursome. There's plenty of people out there, you don't have to be dating right now, just wait till the right person shows up and make it more of a logical transition, rather than forcing your affections on them and hoping it won't get awkward. Heh, dating advice from the anarchist.^^

Well I know a guy who use to be a cop, his crazy ex girlfriend got in an argument with him. It got nasty and she pulled HIS gun on him. Now, because he's smart, whenever he gets home he unloads the gun, she didn't know this... She put the gun to his head and squeezed the trigger! He knew it wasn't loaded, but she obviously showed the intent to kill him. So he knocked the lights out of her. Now the ATF has revoked his license to carry and privilege to purchase weapons, thus losing his job as a cop. Why? Because he punched a girl. (domestic violence) Hmmm, somehow that does sound like "equality" to me.

I remember a fight that happened in High School when I was in year 9 (So I people were 13/14) when a boy hit a girl a few times after she had been shouting, punching and generally harassing/bullying him over something trival to due with one of the girls friends which probally had nothing to do with her. It was quite amazing to see how people, teachers included, who forget all about 'gender equality' and were totally horrified by this. The boy ended up having to move back to England to live with family there because of this.

Not saying that what he did was right but I found peoples reactions pretty digusting, they completely ignored the entire situation and all that was revelant to them was that 'A boy hit a girl', if the same thing happened but it two people of the same gender, then the situation wouldn't have gotten so much attention, ofcourse he shouldn't have hit anyone anyway.

True, and I also don't drink.

I'm too busy dispensing hate and wrath at people all over the world to be lonely anyway. You know, being an insufferable █████ is a very busy job, and though the pay is good, most people pussy out after they get a few verbal lashings. Only those with REAL backbone can do it as long as I have.

Jokes aside, I tried online dating before, and it nearly ended in disaster. That I by accident learned his real age before we were scheduled to meet and had my parents call the FBI to report a pedophile was by far the better of two endings that could have happened. It's probably a small miracle that I still manage to hold such an egalitarian viewpoint ten years later

Well you probably shouldn't do the online dating thing unless you're 18+. Or was this not on a dating site?

Unfortunately, guys like me who live in military cities have to resort to dating services online as the only thing I live with are dudes. The quality of women in this area is typically low. Well, the quality of the ones not married.

Yup, I've faced these double standards before too. Some of my ex's friends (¬¬) spent a good few years abbusing me for no bloody reason, but I remained passive to it, but when I split with the girl, I finally said what I thought of them. Pft and people slagged me for doing that. Eugh...whatever, later when I kicked one of them in the face was quite satisfying (hmph, she had done worse to me, plus she was 18). Um...I think that my point is that if you allow woman to abuse you and not react to that in turn all your life, then people are going to have this sexist attitude towards you when you do finally break.¬¬

The best ones are. The worst ones are like a local radio jockey who tries to argue that it's okay for men to cheat because of a biological imperative, but if women do it they're cheating whores.

Because you know, nature doesn't draw women to find the best and most physically and personality-wise attractive men to father their babies.

I'm for quality, not quantity. I've had 2 relationships, the previous one: 23 months, this one: 25 and going :3

Also the only two I've shpadoinked. This isn't bragging, cause then it should be a bigger number, right?

Dunno, twenty three months seems kinda short for a relationship, but then the fact htat my parents have been married for more than thirty years probably biases me.

My parents were together nearly 30 years. My longest relationship has been 7 years, and the best one was 3 years (unfortunately he died in an accident.)

Still, 23 months is a good start. Better than the '3-months-and-engaged-and-pregnant' ones I keep seeing on daytime talk shows (which are of course the best place to see healthy relationships, obv.)

Anyway, after more then 2 years with my current girlfriend, not a bit of the sparkle has left us. It still amazes how well this is going, we never have fights, because we just talk it out before anything can escalate.

Err, no?

We live sixty to eighty years these days. A relationship taking up merely 1/40th of your lifespan is pretty short.

Not if you're talking about people who are vastly under that. For a 20-year-old, 2 years is about half of their mature life so far. And that's pretty good.

One thing I still don't understand - Greetings.

Man + Man = Usually a handshake, when is it a hug?
Woman + Woman = 99.9% a hug.
Man + Woman... is it a hug? Is it a handshake? Is it a sly wink and a bit of a fondle? (If aint that third one then i've been doing it all wrong...)

Seriously now, what is the norm when a man greets a woman? In today's soceity, when just saying the wrong thing can get you accused of sexual harrassment (from either party), i'd rather not take chances.

For a first meeting its usually a look in the eye and a 'hello'

After that it depends on the person. When meeting up with a female friend the greeting is almost always a hug.

I guess greetings depend highly on your local culture. In my clique, a double handshake (first armwrestling grip, then fluent transition to standard handshake grip) is the custom between men. Hugs between and for women. An Italian guy I met over a school project kissed me on both cheeks after we knew each other for one day... so, yeah, differences there.

I've been trying to think of something I don't understand about women. Yeah, yeah, general "Womenz, huh!" is easy, but something specific...

...there's this girl I'm writing facebook messages with since years. We were together in high school, actually flirted a bit back then. Thing is, her messages got REALLY rare over the last months. After a while of this going on I got slightly annoyed and asked her if we should simply stop writin each other and just see us every once in a year on school reunion thingys...and she was all "No, no, I'd really like to keep in contact with you, it's just that I can't write every three days, you know, I'm very busy..." Yeah, I can understand that 3 days are not good for everyone and, let's be honest, only so much interesting to talk about can happen in three days.

But now, I'm waiting for an answer for about six weeks again. Why insist on staying in contact and then don't, you know, STAY in contact?

That and people in general that consistently take for fething ever to reply to a simple text message. Mostly happens with girls.

Hey I have today off, let's go (do something)!
*Her several hours later*
Oh I'm at work.

...WHAT?! I work too, but you can still keep your phone on you. And this isn't a once in a while type deal, it's something that the person continually does.

Or when I was in Haiti last year. Talking to a girl I've known for a while, she lived on the Pacific coast so she was 3 hours behind my time zone. It was 10 at night for me and I had to wake up at 4 in the morning to go do a patrol. She sent me a text saying "I'll be home in an hour". Ok, that's fine with me, haven't talked to her in a really long time so I was willing to stay up for a bit. Hour and a half goes by... still no phone call. Send her a message "Hey you off work yet?" ...another 30mins goes by "Sorry I have to do *something* at home".

AND YOU COULDN'T HAVE SENT ME A QUICK TEXT 30 MINS ago!? Needless to say I got no sleep because of her and I was very bitter towards the Haitians next morning. More than usual.

Yeah, I'm not sure what goes on in the heads of some people. Inbefore Melissia, men do this stuff, too, of course. But you know, with most guys I know, there's a simple answer to why they didn't answer or didn't react - they simply forgot it! I can live with that!

But to stay with the example, this facebook-message-girl...after I got annoyed after she didn't write anything for far over a month and told her about it, she was very sorry and actually wrote something along the lines of "Hey, just last week I had to think of you when [blablabla]". So, obviously, she didn't forget about me and, in conclusion, about writing me. She just didn't do it for some mysterious reason.

I mean, I know that not everybody is in the mood to write faceboook messages all the time. Sometimes you need a quiet moment and don't want to do it in your daily stressy life. But come on, SIX WEEKS?

I may sound more angry here than I really am; it doesn't bother me that much, as many others I have learnt to not give too much of a crap when the wimminz act strange. But this is the one incident that I can think of right now where I simply don't understand her.

The reason being is simple-- dudes hugging are assumed to be gay in western culture. Not so in every culture.

Meh that's not a women thing, that's the price you pay for not calling someone and making them have to type out some gak it would have taken them an nth of the time to say on a horible phone keypad. I do it all the time.

Actually, I wouldn't go so far and generalize "Western culture". Italian men are kissing and hugging each other all the time. Me and a group of male friends (back in Germany) also hug all the time, regardless of being in public or not. Nobody really sees this as a sign of us being gay, though. I might hazard to say that the United Stated might still be a bit more homophobic than Europe is.

Hugging in the UK is not considered gay. Well maybe for more than like two seconds, then maybe you're gay. But greeting another man by saying 'hug' is certainly gay.

The word 'pandering' is a big deal there, in contrast to the call for 'mature' handling in Fafnir's post. You can't really handle something in a mature way and pander to an audience.

Well, unless 'mature' actually just means 'we show boobs and sex' which is that not all mature style of 'mature', in which case then it is certainly pandering. But if it's 'mature' as in 'includes believable male and female characters who deal with issues with close parallels in the real world' then not so much...

I know exactly what you're saying, and I agree with you for the most part, but I see the marketing trends that are starting to try to get adult women to buy more video games and the part of my brain that's always watching for carny tricks starts to twitch.

I agree that there is a difference in degrees between "boobs for the young men" and "believable characters of either gender" but you can't sit there and act like they don't pander with strong female characters in movies and television. (Lifetime Network, anyone?)

Oh, they do, for sure. There's certainly nothing to say that female themed games would be any less junk than most male themed games are now. When we look at the games that have reasonably equal or mostly female players you see things like The Sims and Second Life, which are pretty much the junkfood of computer games.

But I didn't read Fafnir's post as calling just for greater gender equality in games, but just calling for more mature games in general.

That is true. But not every game needs excessive violence and nudity.

It's not too often that you get a game that has some really deep and powerful themes, and explores them at great depth. The last game I remember that really dealt with sexuality in a very mature manner was Persona 4 (I guess you could say Bayonetta, but that does it moreso in a satirical tongue-in-cheek kind of way). And I'm not talking about simply having a sex scene. It dealt with the actual themes of sexuality, sexual discovery, sexual deviance, and sexual identity. And it did it with great taste and believability. But that's one game out of millions. And that's kind of sad.

And how many games handle violence in such a way? Short of games like No More Heroes and Madworld, I can't really think of much. And in the case of those two games, they do more to examine the gamer psyche then to actually study or artfully display violence itself.
For all the videogames that take place in war settings, we never get to see the actual impact of the players actions. You see enemy soldiers and allied soldiers, but never civilians, never the real lives. Just imagine you were playing a World War 2 shooter, and you're in a bombed city. Walking through the remains, and you come across a dying civilian, severely burned during the bombing. What's more, imagine the interactivity you could add to it, and thus, add a sense of responsability to the player.
Imagine a wargame that transcends the idea of a game, more into an actual work of art. Imagine, instead of portraying a series of missions to complete in order to beat a game, you could convey a real sense of pain and horror? You could achieve a message deeper than any movie ever could simply allowing the player to feel it all first hand.

Oh, and for the record, everyone should play Persona 4, Bayonetta, No More Heroes (1 and 2), and Madworld. They're all absolutely wonderful games.

You are taking the comment way too personally, he was commenting on how the use of generic feminist "strong" women is just as much pandering as the all women are strippers approach just to a different demographic.

The problem is that it seems like if you're a female character in videogames, you either have to be a submissive plot device, a stripperific sex icon, or a hard-nosed bitch. There's not too much leeway.

It's nice to have characters like The Boss and Bayonetta, who defy those tropes.

Not really, I'm saying Lifetime sucks.

I'm not angry, I just have an inordinately hot blooded nature online to make up for being overly polite IRL. It's a stress release valve.

Lifetime probably does suck but it is totally unrelated to you being a gamer not some bored housewife.

It's not intentional...

I'm just... me. If I had to classify myself, I'm a college student whose tastes tend towards sci-fi and fantasy, as well as being into gaming and wargaming. Unlike some people, I'm not defined by my gender...

... unless, of course, this is the reason why I say it sucks?

Your defined by your permanent state of unforgiving...

Where was I going with this?...

God I'm bored.

I wouldn't say unforgiving (I forgave Alpharius for example, as our grievances against eachother were caused by a misunderstanding), I'm just stubborn.
