Back from weekend!

Should have updates of the wolves and ship tonight, also doing some assembly.

FF7 was re-released as an optimised PC version this week so that kinda ate up most of my weekend time, that and trying to finish off co-op borderlands achievements. Good times

The owner converted a lot of them so I'm really not sure I'm afraid :( Knowing him it was a bit of a tanks door or something awesome I'll try to remember to ask him for you.

You can't keep a good terribly rude game down!

So tonights updates are here, and a bit sparse I'm afraid as while I got lots of work done on the wolves, they all have early stage faces and look like they were painted by a small child so I'm skipping their shots tonight

HUGE pic of Grimnirs Thunder -

Realised I still have to paint the tiny version on the base! Doh!

The metal contrast is not quite this heavy in real life, my camera has a habit of making dark boltgun look nearly black instead of reflecting the metallics right. It is indeed quite dark and shiny, but the contrast between the mythril and boltgun is not THIS crazy, hard to explain

It is so very tiny, much smaller than the swordfish. It's tiny cargo airship and second airship are being painted now!

I really enjoyed my weekend of FF7 and managed to get the Great Gospel achievement. This is my third or fourth time grinding it but never before on a platform that had achievements, so I finally have evidence I actually did it and did not just use a gameshark back in they day

http://finalfantasyviipc.com/en/profile/Ifalna

Hueheuehueheh.

Back to painting!

@Ifalna: I'm not sure if it's a trick of the light, but it looks like there is something beneath the waves in the first pic. I pushed in on the waves just before the waterwheel and I see something red-orange with eyes and teeth.

Putting aside that oddity, I like the green and weathered gold. It's a magnificent looking ship.

Thats terrifying! I figure it's the reflection of the warm main light in the room I paint in, as that shot was without the lightbox to block it out. Either that or it's some kind of tiny horrible ghost. D:

Trusty airbrush to the rescue yet again Lovely smooth fades with minimal effort.

Hour and hours and hours and hours of work later and it looks very different. Gold, decking, and church still in very early stages, but I managed to pick out most of the detail, tiny and excruciating as it was.

Golden guy on front is about the size of a euro.. this thing is tiny.

Hehe no don't worry, not scared off. Gobsmacked at the detail though, I have to say. Really incredible models.
The airbrush always makes things look crap till you block in the rest of the colours, cause it leaves the whole model one or two shades and it always looks awful D: I've gotten into the habit of visualising what the blocked in colours will look like while airbrushing so I don't give up afterwards and think it turned out awful!

Gitsplitta wrote:<== Amazed... and squinty.

I gave myself some pretty nasty back strain painting this today to be honest, I think I've put in about 14 hours on it, but the body is now done and I can move onto the wayyyy easier sails!

Click for huge shot!

This has been quite the event, learned a LOT from this tiny boat and quite happy with how the body work has turned out. Now there are just the sails to go I included a normal sized space marine so people can grasp just how tiny this is, I think at first glance it looks large but.. it’s not.

Most detail work I’ve fit onto something so small I think.

The size really is super misleading, isin't it. It looks about the size of a rhino or small tank when you see the shots I think, then you see it in reality and do a double take! I wrecked my back a bit getting those details down, really had to keep this very close to my face to keep steady enough to get the tiny lines etc. I can't wait to get the sails done either Am technically on weekend now but missed a day of painting so want to push to get work done on them!

Rogue Wolves wrote:I love the metals on this ship Iff, but I especialy love the blue roof tiles, might I ask how you did it?

I started off with shadowgrey and then gradually drybrushed it up through to near white, then gave it a black wash making it thickest near the recesses and edge highlighted with about 2:1 white to shadow grey. The tiny little roof tops don't have the black wash for a bit of colour contrast

I agree 110% about the painting area. My OCD will not let me sit and paint comfortably without it being nice and clean and organized!

Very nice work on the l'il boats looking very sharp. It'a always nice to see things progress from the crazy contrast of the red on black to the amazing final product. Nt being afraid of that contrast has made me a much better painter

So, Iffy... is the gradient in the red sails due to an actual painted gradient, or is it the effect of the lighting for the photograph?

Re:Ifalna's minis - Celestial WraithKnight Update + Fire Prism for sale @ 2012/08/24 20:20:21

Post by: Ifalna

The gradient is painted And no, the red is not making them go faster. They are going slowly. Slow and infuriating haha.

Colours are done, waiting on a wash to dry and starting highlights.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Shots aren't the best but I am freaking exhausted from this and will have to get better ones tomorrow, sorry!

Sails need a detail cleanup, especially on the wings and hammer crest, they then need some shading around the sail recesses and some actual sail highlights. Then it's just the masts and wooden beams to go Should look lovely.

They kinda look like paper cut outs right now, haha. Need some shading!

I'm going to paint the Gringo Orks I have at the same time as Gits little dudes as that would make sense, they have the same skin tone just to a tabletop standard so might as well not waste paint! /cheap.

I also need to get proper aperture shots of the Heldenhammer once it's done, as getting it all in focus with those crazy sails is surprisingly hard!

What's amazing to me is how much detail is going into that ship given how tiny it is. Pretty darn impressive feat of painting and patience Iffy. You should make sure that one makes it into your permanent portfolio... along with some mundane object that gives it scale.

I leave you lot alone for 10 minutes...

It did indeed used to be called a blogoblag, or blagoblog, or something equally silly, but I changed it to reflect my super serious commitment to my craft as I am a super serious person and if any of you disagree, I will fight you.

I finished up the ships today, so here are the shots

Click for HUGE

Finally finished. All to character standard, all very very tiny. I've learned an awful lot with these, from painting water to fine detailing. Very happy Whalemusic was nice enough to commission me, they were super enjoyable Bless that teeny little blimp, so cute.

Taking the shots was very difficult as the height of the sails meant fitting them in the lightbox was a no no, but I think they turned out ok.

Oh people, I am so sorry I've not updated. I've been working away but the last few days have been a wee bit hectic as I found a little deaf kitten covered in dirt and cowering in the middle of a road when I went out to walk to the bank. Being a massive softy he is now here and thriving, getting his vaccinations and tests at the vet tomorrow but we have managed about 4 hours sleep in the last 2 days due to his anxiety and wanting to sleep ON our faces, as it's the only way to get close enough to make him happy. Little git.

I have plenty more work on the orks to show, and I also am starting on some very simple little nids and some other fun things Will have shots up soon. I keep promising shots soon and then having to spend 4 hours pampering a little 500g furball.

Nice work on the eyes. You going to leave the rest of the cat primer white? Or just a quick calico so you can play right away at a table-top standard? With the pink nose and hetrocrhomatic eyes I guess you have the 3 color minimum right there.

Nice work on the orcs, and cute cat.

Points: 35

WS2 BS1 S2 T2 W2 I3 A1 Ld5 Sv-

Wargear: claws and teeth (close combat weapon)

Special Rules: Independent (Cat)racter

Adorable: No blows may be struck against this adorable kitty in close combat, and it may not be targeted with shooting either.

Aww: This kitty is so cute, enemies spend all their time looking at it rather than fighting. In a combat involving the Ordicatniss Meowmotha, all enemy units in the same combat are hit automatically

While I'm thinking about it - if the kitten actually is deaf, invest in a laser pointer. Makes it very easy to move the cat from room to room, and can be used to get its attention when required.

Finally back!

Glad everyone liked the wee kitten, last few days have been trying to get his sleeping patterns into normality and also making vet trips. He is clear for feline aids and leukemia, so we will be keeping him Very very happy, and he looks really great now that he is clean and feeling better -

I actually got more than 4-5 hours sleep last night so got loads of work done!

All of the orkies now have their red and brown blocked in, and their metals finished. The rest are in various stages of having their "poncho and straw" colour added, and will then have varied shades of washes added and then some rehighlight.

Here are the 4 that have all of their poncho colour down, so I figured I would shoot them instead of a ragtag mix up of everyone together They are starting to come together now, can't wait to add some patterns onto the ponchos and add their black parts. Still early WIP, it takes a long time to even get one colour blocked in when you are painting so many models at once!

Hope to have the rest at this stage for tomorrow, and get their shading done.

Also, Dysartes, that is an amazing idea. I am totally going to do that.

Glad to be of service, Ifalna. I got one for the family's current cat, Earl, when I went home for my Mum's birthday in November last year, after seeing one of the trailers for Puss in Boots - all of a sudden, no need to try and retrieve the kitten from under the sideboard...

Public Safety Announcement: Do not shine laser pointer into the kitten's eyes, though ears and front paws are allowed if you're careful.

Have you named him, or gotten him a diamond collar yet? If not, I recommend Blofeld...

I'm still not convinced by the modelling of the ponchos on the Orks yet, though that is a nice colour you've got basecoated on there

Update time!

Oh god they are so close to being finished, I'm not even going to clean up this shot cause I plan on getting them done by tomorrow.

Just the black highlight, little details like the wires, bandages, and ornaments to go, then its just the sand bases and they should be all set. They look quite hilarious in a good way. <3

Kitten managed to destroy my makeshift lightbox by using it as a base to launch himself onto one of my other cats, so I have to craft a new one soon. Oh the shame. Should have updates tomorrow, back on track now with painting back to normal

Just waiting for bases to dry and then inking the sand a little, edging them properly, and adding the odd tiny tuft of grass.

All their detailing is done bar the wires on the rocket launcher and the single tekeela bottle (which I will paint at the same time as the others).

These are tabletop standard so they have a limited amount of layers, but I tried to get lots of character into them with little patterns and fun details. No two are the same, but they all have the same colour scheme. It makes them match without making them too similar

Ack, no lightbox = terrible photos! Will be fixed for the final shots though I'm happy with the poncho's for sure, I think they could have gone really badly, especially considering the limited amount of layering for this standard, but painting on the patterns and dusting them a little really helped!

Your tabletop standard is still much better than most tabletop standards.

The Gringo Orks (Gringorks?) look awesome. I love the rusted patterns and the individualized sombreros.

(And I'm still trying to get my greenskins to look like yours--some day. I've also tried to white dot their eyes--I need a smaller brush.)

AHVE BEEN BUSY

I got the banditos all finished, and here they are -

Being tabletop standard so I had to hold back a bit on layering and just stick to blocky, fun colours that could give a nice final level of detail without rocketing out of their pricing standard. They took quite a while, it is a deceptively big unit and I am not the best at doing large units. I tend to spend a bit too much time on each model to make it unique. I think the owner did a pretty great job with the little poncho’s.

No two are the same, all follow the same colour scheme but have varied patterns, colour areas etc. Banditotastic.

I also have 5 character standard Space wolves who are now just waiting on their bases to dry so they can get final snow effect and cleanup. Gorgeous, gorgeous models. Looking forward to getting proper shots of each.

Here is a quick shot of one, note the totally unfinished base and lack of lightbox. SO PRO.

I am now onto some niddlies, some more Orks, and some very interesting non warhammer models. The kitten incident really set me back, but I am trying to catch up with my workload as best I can.

The bases are totally made of shaved Cloud. Luckily, he is self replenishing. I'm glad you like the ponchos, they are how I wanted them to look but I was unsure if I was going to be able to get a good finish while keeping them tabletop standard, I think it worked out. Also, it's always a good thing to work on basic freehand as often as possible My freehand has improved so much this year, it is crazy. I was terrified of trying it a year ago, really shows how quick things can change.

Gitsplitta wrote:Man those orks turned out great! Really impressed with the way you handled the ponchos and sombreros.

Cheers Gits The owner is happy with them too, so I am thrilled. There is one still to go, a big boy who is going to be character standard. I really, really, really, really, really want to paint him like one of the 3 amigos, but he does not have a smart enough suit.

So sad :(

Keeping the colour scheme really simple but varying it across a unit is something I do quite often with Orks, it lets them look like a ragtag group while also making them look like a unit, it works really well The sombreros were great, I can't wait to work on one thats character standard, so much detail!

The army is incredible from what I've seen. The owner has made a giant fiesta death wagon that really does look like a spiky pinata of pain, it is brrrriiiiliant.

Ramos Asura wrote:Wow.... It really turned around from when I first saw them!!

The gs work was a little rough, but I thought it wouldn't be a problem as the ponchos would be very rough naturally and by just drybryushing on some dust and dirt colours it would end up looking like sack cloth, which it kinda did! Really happy it worked out, the owner put a lot of love into these guys.

Commander Cain wrote:Nice work! Your orks truly are some of my all time favorites!

Oh wow, thanks dude! Glad you are liking them I had never painted an Ork untill Gits sent me the first batch of grots and it has really spiraled out of controll now hahaha, Orks everywhere!

Speaking of Gits, I spent yesterday working on some very simple nids for him. They are a little below my normal TT standard, but they are looking nice and coherant and that's a good thing.
I have 10 out of 30 (I think it was) done at this stage, I just need to alter the colour of their little fleshy bits and they are good to go. Should get more done today Nice simple little dudes.

That's my fault weety, Iffy's just painting them along a scheme I developed for my son's Nids... which is borne out of apathy largely. She is doing a great job with them though, especially considering I asked her to dumb-down her excellent table-top standards.

No no, that would just be silly. Chocobo steeds of Slaanesh though?
... now we are talkin

So character standard Bandito big boss has his skin finished, and I've started on his mouth, metals, and bone /hat. He is going to have a fancy hat I hope, and maybe some crazy trousers. I just don't know yet. I just don't know.

Also, 15 of the mini nids are now finished, and the rest are all at the same stage (pinks, whites, shades and bones down - starting on lining ) Nice that they are starting to finish off now.

Darkened the carapaces with some green/black wash mix and it really added some richness. Kudos to Gits for the idea. They don't have long to go, but getting a group shot will be hard, there are a LOT of these little niddlies!

Edit - oh yeah, and I have some pm's to get through, will get some before bed and then in the morning thanks everyone for your patience, it's super appreciated.

Cid from a delaque? Or maybe one of the PP warcasters oe engineers. In fact I think I have one that fits the bill.
Vincent from an elf? I'm mainly thinking of the cloak and headband there, so a bit iffy.
Red from any of several cat minis/toys.
Yuffie from an escher juve/mordheim brat.
Sephiroth from Fabius Bile?
Tifa from an escher? Maybe a juve.
Cloud from a variety of sources, same for Aeris.

Cait???

OK, I've written it down, maybe the idea will leave me alone now....

Incorporate scorpion green as a highlight. It can take a few layers to build up to it properly, but it really adds brightness, near neon to be honest. I love the stuff.

Oh. Oh wow. Yes. This must be done. Cait would have to just be greenstuff I think, unless you had him as Reeve instead?

Dysartes, this is just a very special Ork, ya know? He has his own incredibly unique way of holding a gun, and who am I to question that. Someone who doesn't want to be beaten to death by an Ork, thats who. Yep.

Here he is now -

Mouth, metals and bone now done, clothing starts tomorrow! He's really coming along now. I went with a really simple but very neat metal finish I've never tried before, and I think it turned out nice. Just needs some contrasting around it to make it pop.

I've also reached the painting stage with this guy -

All drilled out and assembled with greenstuff, all small skulls pinned and ready to be added tomorrow, rider cleaned and all mold lines I found tidied up ( will likely spot more once he is primed, ofc) Also did a lot of score lines and nicks in the armor using a scalpel, but won't be that visable till he is painted.

Priming begins tomorrow, exciting.. seriously. So many ideas already.

I did indeed! Great job on the green shade fades, thats bloody hard to pull off without an airbrush.

It is indeed, required between 5 and 13 thin layers (depending on the length of the fade) from yellow to dark green. It took a long time and quite a bit of patience to do.
That's what I like about your painting, you're so patient to build up the colours, one thin layer at a time. I'm usually not happy if I can't get the right colour with 1 or 2 coats. I probably wouldn't have done that fade so gradually if I wasn't trying to get close to your's.
And I don't have 3 settings on my painting, only one, and that's as good as I get.
Keep it up.

Very very nice work, ive spent the last few days (been kinda slow at work) looking though this entire thread and i am super impressed by your work, you have a new fan.

I would totally get you to paint my Space Wolves if you lived anywhere near me, sadly however, you dont :(. hmm maybe i could get you to do my characters at least, how would you go at matching a character (colour wise anyway) to my already painted Space Wolves so they would fit in?

Well the patience really showed because he looks great Fading in layers is tedious but can give such lovely results, airbrushing is just kinda a giant cheat button for fading, which is why I love it I only had one setting for a loooooong time too, I'm glad I pushed myself further though. When you eventually find yourself bored with how you are painting ( and you will) challenge yourself to paint a model to the best you possibly can after reading tutorials and guides. Thats what I started doing and it was a really great excercise. I was super proud of the work I was doing too, even if it is a bit embarrassing now D:

Haha welcome aboard! Being in Ireland is a bit of a pain in the bum for international work alright, but at least we have a very cheap postal service here. I'm not taking on commissions right now but if it is for a couple of months down the line, PM me the details and we can have a chat

Gits Nids will be all finished up tomorrow, and this big guy now just needs his blacks and pole finished off.

There are some problems with the gun hand, but hopefully they will be lost in the overall final look. Can't wait to base him, will make a really big difference I think.

Thanks. Yeah, I had a working airbrush for a while but a connection broke so a new propellent solution is required once I have money to spend on one, I don't think blowing down the tube would cut it . Although I only used it for undercoats on model aircraft. Airbrushes still require skill to do more than cover a large area though.
It takes a long time for me to get bored and I do try to do each and every model I do to the best of my ability as I'm only doing them for the fun of painting and modelling. Sometimes I just hit an entire model just right and it looks good, but I don't stop until I'm at least happy with it.
That's what is good about these sort of models as opposed to "real life" models, you have things like DakkaDakka where you can see what other people have done AND how they do it, so everyone can raise their game.

Ork looks good. Skin tones are good and the metal looks... like metal really (as good as it gets). well done.

Nice work on the metals, Ifalna, but I still don't like the pose of the gun arm - it spoils the whole model for me.

Stellar paintjob, Iffy, the skin and metals look absolutely awesome... but as others have already pointed out.... the pose... it's just not very dynamic or realistic.

couldnt you just rotate the arm so the gun is pointing in the air, it would look more like a reload or a clobbering..

Oh god what have you all started this time!

I... must admit a clobberang does sound pretty amazing. I'm sure one will pop up soon knowing you lot.

I've been super busy today, firstly I got him finished -

Lots of fun, kept him cartoony as it helped hide some of the conversion issues, and tied him with his unit by giving him a super colourful pole to match their ponchos I’m very happy with his metals. The base really finished him off I think.

I've also been working away on what will be a showpiece standard display Juggy, he started like this -

Which as I explained on FB -
"This is the lightest he will ever be. With the airbrushed areas down, I will now start shading him and blocking in the other areas. Lots of places that have red at the moment will actually be metal or bl
ack, and all the reds will be toned down and shaded a LOT, as Mitchell has some awesome ideas for dark shades and power line effects. He will be brutal. Well, visually brutal. He is already physically brutal. Spiky git."

He now looks like this -

After a lot of careful shading down and blacklining. I will be starting on his highlights while continuing to shade him down and get him as dark as possible, which the owner wants. Going to have some really nice metals too, I am seriously thinking of ye old Mithril silver layers over and over with sepia and black wash like on my old Khorne nights, it can look gorgeous.

Re:Ifalna's minis - Celestial WraithKnight Update + Fire Prism for sale @ 2012/10/11 06:55:16

Post by: MrMerlin

How exactly did you do the metals on the nob? They look perfect. I'm guessing its black and brown washes over a base of chainmail or similar, highlighted with mithril silver?
Anyway, can't wait to see how the juggernaut turns out!

Re:Ifalna's minis - Celestial WraithKnight Update + Fire Prism for sale @ 2012/10/11 09:55:50

Post by: Ifalna

The metals were a base of boltgun given a couple of washes of thick black and mud with sepia in certain areas like joints, then I very carefully edge highlighted with chainmail and mithril.

I will deffo do it again, but would push to add some rusting in there too

Early magma/glow lines now down, these are the absolute base so will get tidier and tidier as they are blended in with washes and then have the edges highlighted. Made a couple of mistakes on the shoulder while getting used to the size/shape I wanted but thats what base tests are for Will be tidied up as I go.

Starting to see how he is going to come together now, time to get some more work down on those cracks. Will also need re-darkening and blacklining around armor areas afterwards, but that was expected.

I reaaaaallly need to get my act together and make another light box to remove the glare that is very obvious here :( Keeping something made of tissue intact with the kitten around is harder than it sounds.

Really glad people like him so far, I have a great mental image for him so I'm trying to get him as close to it as I can. His metals are going to be really lustrous dark bronze and they will make a huge difference once down, but at the moment I think the biggest visable difference will be once he has a matt coat layer! He is very glossy at the moment and shouldn't be, it's just a byproduct of the inks and washes. I will try and get a lightbox sorted for tomorrow so that should really help out.

Oh dude, I am seriously scared to continue, but I have to. Just gotta not panic and keep going with them, if I am as careful as I can be, it should work out fine. I would say 2 hours for the little lines he has so far, but that number will skyrocket as I go!

Gitsplitta wrote:It's coming along quite nicely Iffy. Love the armor pattern. Are you going to make them 3-dimensional or leave them as a 2-D pattern?

I won't make them 3D as in with shadow lines, but I will be adding bright points to where the cracks join together. They should look like a nice glow instead of being actual cracks if that makes sense, it would be too far out of my comfort zone to try making them look 3D on a commission model

Here is something totally different though!

Cute little Mid tabletop standard wolf pack for a very, very patient owner. These guys are very wee, those are normal sized cavalry bases. They all have different patterns but are nice and coherant as a little pack I just need to tidy the bases once they are set in the morning.

I tried to keep the fur pretty simple, so it's basically a shade lighter than the final result I want as a base coat, then I painted on little pattern areas with a shade darker or lighter depending on if I wanted them to fade to a light or dark colour, then gave them a VERY heavy black wash to give dimension to the fur.

After that I very dry drybrushed them with the base colour again and painted on some shade lines with black wash. It's pretty quick to do bar the wait time for drying.

Interesting. I would have said drybrushing from a dark base coat, but not a light base coat with a dark wash. But I haven't tried painting fur yet, I shall keep that in mind. Looks good.

Haha, I host WIP pics on Tumblr cause it gives better image quality than Dakka :( It's very slight but it's there, cleaner uploads for me with no colour loss. It could just be my wonky upload connection, but there ya go!

I've had a very busy week, but all very positive so thats great

Sad serious time now though.

This is the first year where I have been remotely popular for commissions, and I have made a very serious rookie mistake and over booked myself across the last month and the next few. I've only realised it now and did not know any better at the time, I said yes a few too many times when I really should have said " not right now but definitely later" :( It's totally my fault and no one elses and I feel really gak about it honestly, I don't want to rush out work and sacrifice quality so I am trying to get through everyones models asap and just putting in a LOT of painting hours. I apologise in public to any person who is still waiting on work they really should have had by now.. I am not forgetting anyone and going as fast as I can, I just want to make sure the finished models are good and not rushed.

In happier news the juggernaut (at around 12 hours paint time, yikes!) is really coming together and now looks like this -

Mouth and metals are total bases so ignore those D: Reds are about done. I might bring the orange up to a slightly lighter shade, I’m not sure yet. Will sleep on it.

The brand new red wash I bought dried cloudy in the recesses and I am FURIOUS, I am hoping it clears overnight but I doubt it will, will very likely need to blackline all over again. Also seriously need to stop procrastinating and make a lightbox to get rid of the glare, the washes left him very shiny and hard to shoot. Really happy with him so far, can’t wait to make those silvers into gorgeous dark bronzes!

I should have more tomorrow, probably another 10 hours of painting to try and catch up with everyones orders. Once again, I am so damn sorry I made this mistake, everyone.

Thanks for the reassurance and the PM's guys, it was eating away at me and I feel really bad about the prospect of letting anyone down. If I make a mistake I own up to it and try and make sure it won't happen again, so this is certainly a lesson learned :(

I think I will be lowering the amount of commissions I take on and trying to up the quality a bit.

This Juggy to showpiece has thought me so.. so much and it is only half done. My skillset is improving a heck of a lot faster when trying to paint at the absolute best I can manage then when painting tabletop, so I will prob limit tabletop to one big unit a month or something, cause I still do love working on small fun models too and don't want to cut it out!

Thanks guys! I think this model is so far the best thing I have ever painted, and that makes me really happy. I was very, very scared to freehand on it but taking the time and being patient really paid off. It is meant to be a homage to Magmatrax the amazing Jugger GD winner from a few years ago, but also wanted it to not look like I just stole a wonderful idea and tried to copy it, so I implemented the magma lines quite differently and it turned out lurvly.

Also that is totally the best red I have ever painted, and bless the black background for showing it perfectly without washing out the colour as white would have <3

Cutthroatcure wrote:I believe anyone who wants a commission will understand how much effort and time you put into your work and will be patient for the final project.

Thanks man, I personally just don't think it's right to have a delay like this because even if people are understanding, they still put their faith in me to a professional extent and I made a stupid newbie mistake that affected them. That's not ok for someone you are paying for services, so it's important to me that I make it clear I understand I really goofed up and it won't happen again :( Agh.

Best movie ever.

They will be on their way once this Juggy is done I actually can't wait cause they look.. amazing!

Gitsplitta wrote:Reds are indeed looking quite stunning. Too bad about the wash though. Which was it?

It was the new red "shade" that I can't pronounce, the same thing has happened to me with badab and I still have no idea what causes it. It's not agitation, it's not bad water quality when thinning, it's not issues with humidity or pooling.. it just happens randomly and is a right gack to fix :( It's literally ruined a commission before and I had to start from scratch. If that happened with this guy after over 12 hours work I would honestly just sit down and cry on the floor. I wouldn't be able to handle it :(

First time commenting on this blog but I have been watching it since all those lovely squig pics... Your work is amazing, and inspirational, especially for a young mind like mine trying to comprehend how to paint as amazingly as you. Your colour choices and tones are always perfect and the finish product on any work you do would be well worth the wait I think. Keep your chin up and never feel like you have to do everything at once Thank you for inspiring me to paint.

Wow, thank you! Very kind words and really gave me a boost I needed.

I'm so glad you find my stuff inspiring. It's hard for me to really fathom because to me, I am still making a lot of mistakes and learning just like everyone else. I don't see myself as inspirational at all, but I take it as a really great compliment so thank you so much. I hope I continue to make folks happy and not let people down in the future.

Will be getting lots of painty work done today and looking forward to it. Feeling creative and motivated, it's good!

Very inspiring indeed. Like most good painters they look at a piece as an art form. Like most artists (I know I married one) it takes what it takes to do a piece correctly. Most gamers will understand a delay in order to get an amazing result. It's not an assembly line.

Having to explain your delay shows you got a honest attitude. A worthy trait, and these day is worth more than money. Be happy in the notion that your work is in demand and respected by your community; a true sure sign of success as an artist.

PS. One doesn't need to see oneself as inspirational to inspire others. It happens all on its own. That's how Art is supposed to work. IMO

Hang in and enjoy

I've had similar issues with the sepia that I picked up. When I asked the store owner, he told me it was a bunk batch, and if I called gw they would replace it. Not that they can replace your painting, but hey, free paint?!

Hell I can say "meow". I can say "moo", for twenty bucks I'll call the guy a chickenf$^@#r.

Thanks SL, that really means a lot. I don't think I will ever break out of my " I'm not really good enough for people to be being inspired by me" mindset, but that never means I am not very complimented or overjoyed when people really love my work.! People enjoying what I paint is one of the main reasons I keep painting

Chap I am talking to on facebook said the same thing, GW replaced it for him. That doesn't change that it can ruin hours and hours of work though, or that it seemingly strikes randomly.. I used it again today and it dried absolutely fine :( I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING DIFFERENT, ARRGH.

Whoahhhhh he is awesome. He looks very much like Logan from Fable 3!

But now it is update time!

These are the last shots with the black background, as much as I love how it doesn't bleach red, he is getting too dark for it now and getting lost in it a bit. Will be back to white from now on.

Mithril has been slowly dyed down to a really old bronze with a lot of layers of sepia, chestnut ink, purple wash, and badab black. Each layer was painted on carefully to make sure it pooled around rivets etc to give them extra detailing.

Bronze will get a very thin mithril highlight and a little hand finishing, then it's time for his mouth and bone/hooves tomorrow. I'm really happy with how he is progressing.

Oh I see.

I see how it is.

No one cares about the Juggernaut.

People only want Squigs in ridiculous colours.

WELL NO PROBLEM CAUSE I GOT ONE RIGHT HERE!

Have a 20 minute tequila sunrise Squig

Bottle green eyes and blue gums I think, very cute and quite quick! For the awesome Gits and highlighted up to Badmoon yellow to fit his Orksies.

Interesting that this is the exact same camera settings as todays Juggernaut shots, it’s not that the Juggy was shadowed, it’s that he is genuinely now so dark that he is getting lost in a black background!

Amazing as always. Sorry I haven't checked in in a while, but in a way it's a good thing because I've been given so much eye candy to look at. I love your intense tonal modelling. Is this created with washes, wet blending or just mixing lighter/darker colours? Been trying to expand my paint range from just power armour races and I want to be able to get some nice tonal modelling on flesh, clothing and such. I've had success with my Rohan models but i'd like to progress further. Any advice? Glad to see all went well with the commission debarkle by the way!

Ah it kinda varies with whatever I am painting and to what standard, if that makes sense. I flop between airbrush gradients, wet blends, glazes, and thin layering all the time. Sometimes it's a mix of all of them D:

If you give me an example of a model I painted that had a finish you were curious about then I can let you know exactly what I did to achieve it, that would be no problem!

Oh wow, thank you! It was a total experiment so I am really freaking happy that it turned out well. The crack lines were originally identical gemoteric shapes but I realised making them varied was wayyy more natural looking, and it really worked out!

Ah but he is only teeny and has a couple of layers highlight The only time extensive part was getting the gradient around his mouth right, other than that you can paint an extreme highlight effect on a small model really quickly!

Holy crap I had not seen them, they look immense.. wow. I would love to paint more but I don't think a unit like this would be likely to happen! hahah... /cry

lipsdapips wrote:It does make sense, yeah. Ok, for example how did you achieve this effect?

That was glaze layers, a huge amount of them applied in quite subtle highlights. I used a lot of bleach bone with the green to get a nice kinda pale colour as I went, and I used Vallejo glaze medium instead of very watery layers cause it lets you keep the mix quite thick and controllable while letting it be nearly transparent. Great stuff.

lipsdapips wrote:And I assume the scything talons were airbrushed for this tyranid? (Which might I add looks astonishing)

They were indeed! You can get super quick gradient effects with an airbrush, it feels like cheating. I sprayed all the talons while on the sprue and then attached them afterwards, they turned out lovely and were really, ridiculously quick.

lipsdapips wrote:Thanks for the help, love the juggernaught. You said the gold was mithril silver with sepia washes? I may have to try that... I:

No problem! It was chestnut ink, sepia, badab, and purple wash in varied layers and in varied thicknesses. The main think is to try not let it pool on its own and pool it in areas you want extra shading in yourself, it can make a big difference. I will prob give this one final dark wash around all the rivets just to emphasise them a bit.

Intresting using purple wash.. to bring the browns more into the red spectrum?
