yea i been there and done that...the only good thing i can say about the vidya games is its a one time purchase...until the dlc comes out and its even more money i stopped consol gaming many years ago (actually after i beat both kingdom hearts for the ps2) if i play the "evil" its star wars with the g/f occasionally, a little blood bowl and a lot of last stand mode on DOW Retribution actually any of the DOW games are great...then there is company of heroes....nuff said

The Steam version of Space Hulk is not very fun, I know that.

naa..I rotate hobbies from time to time

I have a "Shaun" and a "Columbus" mini primed and ready to paint, I might as well build an "Ash" figure too (complete with Chainsaw hand)

I will disagree with you a bit though Cam....Thinking like a corporate executive, You fail to place a value on unquantifiable intangibles like inspiration. It's not just a poster on Barney Stinson's office wall you know...

Some of my best hobby work has been inspired from my wrist-numbing hours

I too love those models, they are brilliant, and I admit the inspiration that can be gained from many different media sources, including video games. But they are a drug, an insidious infection upon humanity, that should only be prescribed and regulated by granny's.

I know you have firsthand experience, but You sound a lot like the old IPMS-USA guys who blame video games for the decline in scale modelers, not the fact that Old guys ONLY model Cold War airplane models and no one else wants to build those because they've all been done before I've been proving them wrong with an occasional pic of my minis, they seem clueless about gaming models, but a couple other IPMS-USA guys have been doing 40K stuff too and posting it to the site. I had hundreds of hours into the Fallout games before I built any of those, this recent run was probably my third or fourth re-roll.

On the Ash front, I ordered this:

along with a female Dwarf Blood Bowl team for Ladygeek.

Both are currently out of stock on the online shop but I will cast them to order as needed (just shipped a set to japan as a matter of fact.)

Dave! I promised a little while ago that I'd find those cargo containers for you, but I don't think the original seller is doing the plaster ones any more :(

I did find a gent here selling what look like exactly the same casts in resin for a really good price though! Unfortunately it's UK based so might be a bit more pricey to get over to you, but they're there if you're still interested

I avoid gaming at all costs, far too addictive. Takes you away from what's really important, things like modelling. I have lost weeks, months and on one occasion years to the devils own work that is electronic gaming. Or the £50 mouse of doom that given enough time wears away your wrist. Yes I have a callus on the point of my wrist from mouse action, and at least one keyboard with blank spaces where WASD used to be. And sleep deprivation from gaming online with people from 4 different time zones at once. Watching your friends run off into the distance and fly off a cliff because they fell asleep with their head on the keyboard. It took years of training to break myself away, to find a place of solitude, a place were people of a kindred spirit, people who know about real things, like modelling, could talk freely and be beyond the evil menace of console, or worse gaming PC. But even here I find it, taking the life from my new friends, truly great men who model, crippled by the worst evil to have ever been brought forward from the hells pit that is Bethesda, FALLOUT 3, NEW VEGAS. Curse it's name.

No worries Cam, the times happen when the modelling can hit a block idea wise and killing pixelated idjits helps clear my head a bit.

I do have a few xboxlive friends that make the game somewhat fun in spehs muhreen, true it is not well supported, and the two dlc I need are gone, making it hard to follwo when the guys head to chaos incursion or dreadnought assault.
That is why i like the target curor Dave, the thing lights up whe the enemy is in the right spot, but as they move about it gets hard to shoot and kill, so in mass games I die a lot as I prefer using a jump pack and thunder hammer

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/09/06 17:19:20

Post by: Casey's Law

Nice job, tiles are great for broken floors because they go down on a flat surface which means the underneath can be plain. Also they break over a short area, metal or wood has a wider area of effect around the hole which is problematic. I didn't realise stuff like that until I did my recent terrain piece but it's really important. You do it all so easily!

Whatever, another week, another newsletter, another slew of WWII shinies!

First off, MOAR PEGASUS BRIDGE PICS.

New: Armies of France and the Allies

The wait is over for our new Armies of France and the Allies book. This supplement for Bolt Action covers the armies of France, Poland, Greece, Norway, Holland NETHERLANDS and Belgium that stood against the German Blitzkrieg, as well as the resistance forces that sprung up in the aftermath of occupation.

All copies of the book ship with the free and exclusive figure of the decorated French resistance fighter Simone Segouin (also known under the nom de guerre ‘Nicole Minet’).

Paul Hicks has sculpted the miniature and I am sure you will agree he has done a cracking job to capture her likeness as seen in the photograph below.

New: Wehrmacht & Waffen-SS Licence plates decal sheets

In our continuing mission to bring you historically accurate details for your Bolt Action models, we’ve created these license plate decals for your German vehicles. These waterslide transfers have been carefully researched to bring an authentic look to your Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS models.

Pre-order: Perry Miniature’s Afrikakorps 1941-1943

Storm across the deserts of North Africa with this new Afrika Korps boxed set, designed for Bolt Action by Perry Miniatures

The Afrikakorps formed upon Adolf Hitler’s personal orders in 1941, with Erwin Rommel as their commander, to support the Italian army in North Africa. They conducted a hard-fought desert war against the Allies for control of the southern Mediterranean coast.

The box contains 38 Hard Plastic multipose figures – enough figures for a platoon or Zug plus command. There is a choice of head gear (steel helmets, tropical cork helmets or field caps) and arm postions and weapons including MG 34′s, anti-tank rifles, 50 mm mortars, MP 40s, Kar 98s. The box also has individual round bases and 40mm square bases for the weapons teams as well as information on historical organisation.

Can I have a feth yes? Finally we can have our El Alamein games going!

Looks brilliant,

The internal walls, etc. are they black pc you cut to size yourself?

Loving the tiled floor. Did one recently myself, but like a numpty I cut all my tiles myself, didn't know about the textured board. I cut up the tile I took out and jigsawed them back in the hole to look all cracked up.

This is going to look amazing.

There's no shame in doing it that way Cam! I did that with the sidewalk. It's black PVC foam, the miracle material I call it. Cuts with a knife, glues to styrene perfectly with liquid cement.
I find it best to mix methods for variety.

Here I brushed on wet drywall mud (all purpose joint compound, filler) letting it congeal into itself a little bit, creating texture

Then take a dry makeup brush to it with a stippling motion to vary it a bit

That's pretty much what I did for the hut, it's just that it was all on show, so I did all of it... The roof was the only solid part of the hut and that was removable.

How'd you find the wood technique, I'm interested to find out what people think once they've tried it?

Ooo, wall texturing looks ... textured. Interesting technique and I'll look forward to how it works out when painted.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/09/06 18:47:08

Post by: dsteingass

Well, like I said..I cheated a bit. I started by using my clippers on the ends, indenting several end-grain parts on both sides, then I used my knife to etch the grain from there. I can see where your curved scalpel would be more beneficial than my pointed x-acto blade. Otherwise, it's quite simple to keep producing.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/09/06 18:52:44

Post by: Dr H

It's not cheating, it's thinking outside the box...

Yeah, I used clippers on a couple of the broken ends when they weren't looking broken enough on the model.
I did wonder what a pointed blade "wood" be like. Glad it still works though.

Now just imagine doing that for at least 100 more pieces of wood and that's your hut done...

I saw the pricetag , then I saw you get the bridge, pillboxes, troops, buildings and everything else in the picture. They also have a special edition which comes with tons of troops, tanks and stuff.

I'm not getting it, just saw the pics and thought that would make nice necromunda stuff for morons else.

Beautiful weathering, Dave! Did you do anything else to the walls after the stippled spackle? Or is that just white primer over what you already showed? I'm really looking forward to this one - it looks amazing already!

Post by: dsteingass

Nope, I just let it dry to the touch, then sprayed Vallejo grey primer over everything. I'm deciding on other colors as it sits in front of the fan

Oh, before the drywall mud dried, I used the airbrush (just air) to blow any mud globs out of corners, but left some of it on the chair rails and corners and such where I thought a collapse would leave a pile of dust. I'll add more rubble and such on the base before I glue the completed building to the base.

Thanks a lot Scarp!

Thanks Val! I'd read about using drywall mud for mortar from a model railroad article (about how to show mortar lines in HO and N scale- very tiny) before, but never tried it. The idea to use it on the walls was just because I didn't want a sandy/concrete texture and I didn't want to use GW texture paints or mix my own with sand.

Mindblowing Dave!
You are in my Olympus of terrain builders.
Still, you know me as a perfectionist, so it would be unlike me to withhold critique. Assuming the shown version is final, there are two things I think you could have done better:
The facade, great cement effect, but no weathering? Slap some pigments/washes/filters on that bitch.
The inside walls, what a happy accident (Bob would approve), but I'd go back in there and make the revealed layer a little dirtier. Again, some pigments or washes.

See the above in-game screenshot- because 2" slabs are what I first did on the Corvega Bilboard and are more game-accurate (and requires less cutting) Springsteen? I dunno, I avoid his music whenever possible, but even on Satellite radio, he has his own channel, and they still play him on every other channel too. One day he came on the Classic Vinyl channel, Ladygeek kept changing the channel and he was on every station!

Thanks Big B!
Weathering will wait until the group is done, to make their different brick colors blend better together, but yes, I see what you mean. I have to be careful with washes now, because they will darken the mortar lines. I don't want too much, whereas brown brick mortar tends to be darker in color from my research. I also see what you mean about the scratches. I'll see how the other building walls look and probably add that with the weathering.

Simply astounding.

Greatly accomplished vintage look, both in the outside brickwork, and the interior as well.

And that Pulowski Preservation Shelter suggestion looks sound, the OCCUPIED sign doesn't seem like something to easily pass up on...

Vallejo has a wash that would work for keeping the mortar as it should be, and it may lighten the bricks a bit, but dust does blow everywhere

It's really easy to do with a color laser printer, the problem is those little support beams are expensive Plastruct, and they are only sold in pairs of 6" beams for like $5

You should cast a set of them to save cash. That price point is definitely a bit steep for a couple of strips of plastic that you are going to cover up 60%.

Bill board is simply amazing. Just perfect.

I feel you on the price of those particular plastics. But they fit so perfect don't they. I wonder about trying to manufacture something, but it would probably cost more, and take a ridiculous amount of time.

Dear dsteingrass,

Thankyou for providing such wonderful models to inspire us.

I wonder if I might ask some advice?
I have a project which I am about to start which will rely heavily on posters and billboards. You mention that you need to user a laser printer ( i imagine because of problems with ink running), my question is whether you then seal the posters with anything? Watered PVA? matt varnish? I am I must confess, slightly concerned about the durability of anything I might produce.

With Kind Regards

The Guern

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/09/11 13:17:29

Post by: dsteingass

Thanks Guern! No problem! It's really easy. I don't think the printer matters as long as it gives an unpixellated image in the right scale. Typical Inkjet lines won't do, but if your printer is better, go right ahead! Once printed, I start to rip and tear the paper. Once it is ready, I just thin down some PVA glue to attach it to the plastic. I also paint this thinned pva onto the top of the paper, folding down any corners into fun hanging poses. The PVA works both as a glue and a sealant in one shot.

I guess you never saw the Lone Ranger t.v. Show vik, you send tonto in to ask questions then go in later to slap them until they run away, then the shooting starts, followed by more slapping.

Though I alway wondered if that was the lone rangers way of getting back at tonto by letting someone else beat the stuffing out of him.

Do you speak about cloaks or hats to be hanging from chairs or coat hangers? Or do you plan on clothing your minis? The latter would be a job for GS, the former would be good if you use tissue cut to size and then strengthened with PVA.

Hey Guern, I seem to recall reading an article in an old Wargames Illustrated where Herb Gundt made a clothes line with scale clothes hanging out - if I recall correctly he simply cut the clothes out of paper or tissue then coated in pva to get them to hang with creases...

So guys...
Concerning toilets and stuff... About what height should I make them. Do I calculate in the bases of models, or do I try to stay as true to scale as possible?

Think with me on this one, and I'll do some interior stuff for the league to mess around with. I'm sure galorn would indeed be able to cast it all.

@ Galorn: Does it matter what product I use for castings? Will regular air-dry clay work, or must it be green-stuff?

So toiltes, right? Sofas, chairs, got them covered... Anything else usefull? I think I can do closets too, but I think someone with decent plasticard skills can do them better... easier to cast too, and maybe even loose doors so you can open and/or close them.

I think I have galorn's adress, and i do have a couple of days off coming up... I need to get my Model-fu back anyways... Been slacking ever since the move, the hospitalization and my sort of DQ in the latest contest. This might be a good reason to get back to the hobby in earnest. For one thing I slowly feel inspiration coming back at me...

I prefer FO3 to NV for some reason as well.
That's not to say that didn't enjoy NV (I didn't clock up 329 hours for nothing) and there are bits I prefer from NV.

I think I just got more into the character of the vault dweller compared to the courier.

Or it was just that it came first and I knew what to expect when I started NV.

Or it was the greater feeling of freedom at the start of FO3 (after leaving the vault). I like (when starting a game like this) to completely ignore the main quest and just go off wandering and NV kind of forces you to follow the main path (in that going north from where you start is basically suicide).

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/09/13 13:47:03

I agree about the suicide issue, but I did so nevertheless...
And I like new Vegas more, but after I've finished this run I will restart FO3 again... You just can't beat rivet city...

Not sure if I've ever managed to get north of Sloan without building up the character first and the Cazadores are hard enough for a low level character before that.

I have managed East of Goodsprings without going far south, also not easy though.

Whereas, you can go pretty much any direction from Springvale (the school is always my first stop).

Deathclaws are just an excuse to lug an Anti-materiel rifle around - With that baby and a few AP rounds, suddenly Quarry junction seems like a cakewalk (until you run out of ammo)

BTW, before I forget, Nice work Dave

Yup Dave, but then I have the .50 with me and explosive rounds... This way you can still be badass all through
The house looks excellent!

Unfortunately, at the levels that I was trying to sneak past the Deathclaws of Sloan (<5-10), the best gun I had available was the Varmint rifle. That just draws them towards you faster, even if you snipe them in the head from the sort of distance that makes them look small.

Anyway. Nice work Dave. I take it that this will get similar treatment to the previous building?

Yup that is really a drag...

I still had (probably hours of) fun trying every possible way to get past them.
Almost (maybe I did) made it just by sneaking, but there's that other group of Deathclaws on the other side of that valley.
I can remember taking pot shots at them from the small train station (?) just past them, so maybe I did make it past... was a long time ago.

I got through with Boone and Rex
Or was it Lilly?

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/09/13 18:19:17

Post by: Dr H

Lilly is good for Deathclaws as she can go toe to toe with them AND draws them away from you.

Question for you... I went to dl FO3, and it says its not optimized for Windows 7. I don't buy a lot of games on the computer, so would it still be okay? I might end up getting NV anyway.

Oh if he finds the old mine up around the train station with the R.o.u.s.' he can get the crit monster Rat killer it is an optimized fully loaded varmint rifle with excellent qualities, silencer and night scope, (for when you do NOT want to let those blind deathclaws hone in on you! LOL!

I don't know. I had just finished my GOAT and the Vault was starting to fall apart when the first glitch occurred and the game froze.

EDT: Just did it again too right after reloading. Ah well, at least I have this brand-new devastator squad and tactical squad to soothe my tears.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/09/13 21:43:23

There must be a patch to help out there

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/09/13 22:17:44

What seems to be happening... because it just did it again... is that I start moving as if I'm crouched, very slowly, but without being crouched. Then it locks up.

I managed to get out of the Vault and start towards Megaton this time.

at valhalla... i dunno why but i have regular crashes... no methode fixed it for me, i got used to it and still play the games... seems we have a tech thing in common... and i even played it on my wife´s comp too...to the same outcome...and believe me... both comps should take it...

If you don't have a gaming video card, turn the graphics settings down. Graphics cards have separate processors and RAM to handle it all more smoothly.

I have occasional crashing too, moreoften in New Vegas, occasionally when the roulette loading screen loads.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/09/14 11:28:40

Post by: Dr H

That all makes me sad.
I thought it was just my computer being tetchy.
Mine will be fine for a little while and then I'll reach a point and it will just keep crashing and even loading an earlier save doesn't help.

Turning down certain bits of the graphic settings should help as that's often where glitches/bugs occur.
They've always been very buggy games though. It's a shame.

The radio mod is my favorite- adds more period songs

Cool. I'll check them out in the fullness of time. I have to install Nexus first and just to have the game running for more than 5 minutes (at best) will be nice.

The thing with game music is that I usually have my own MP3 collection playing in the background, so don't tend to listen to in-game music.

You're missing 50% of the immersion then, the 40s/50s music on GNR really sets the mood IMHO.

Dave is totaly right about the music, it makes this game so special.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/09/14 17:40:51

Post by: Dr H

Yeah, I know. I do for a bit, when I first get a game.
Although sometimes my music fits the mood well ...and sometimes it doesn't, but is amusing.

Well, I had to drop the textures a bit but I just had FO3 working...until I left the vault, I saw the wasteland and then it crashed... I'll try again later.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/09/14 20:54:20

Post by: Viktor von Domm

the problem is that the radio also gives you the news.... and sometimes the news are important to you...

FO3 crashed on me quite so often... hold on... eventually... for no obvious reason it gets better...
the most frustrating thing was i had massive crashes during the character generation phase... and you can´t save during this...see my world of pain here?^^

Yeah, feel your paint there.
The worst times are when you realise that you haven't saved for ages, usually at the time when you think "I'll just do this bit and then save it..." *crash*

Doc, it's because it was designed before 64 bit win7,
try this, it sounds more complicated than it really is, it's just modifying a text file
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2722281
Just backup the file first, make a copy, call it old.ini or something
Didn't do anything today because my Niece got married today. It was a beautiful day for a wedding too, plus it was short and sweet. I hate long weddings.....

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/09/15 00:32:32

Yeah, I jumped from xp to 64bit 7, so I had lots of things that stopped working properly...

I'll give that a go tomorrow (as it appears to have suck round to half 1 here).

I've done something similar to Skyrim to make it louder, so fiddling with .ini files is fine by me.

Cheers Dave.
Congratulations to your Niece.

It's just a win7 thing. We are programmed, we don't question it anymore

It's easier just to explain it. If you let the "why" bother you too much, your brain will melt.

Ahh but I'm a scientist, I'm trained to ask "why?".

I changed the .ini and I managed to run about springvale without any crashes, so if I go quiet you know where I am.

Yeah, but in the wasteland, the Cazadores would show up rather than yellow jackets, and they are big and nasty!
