Never tried this kinda thing , hearing lots about it here on Dakka, just going to have to have a go I guess. How well does this lot take paint?
48594
Post by: dsteingass
Ortho Plaster takes paint and glue much better than Plaster of Paris. That stuff sucks, never use it. It's still porous, but only slightly. I'm not sure what I'm building yet, but I need roughly 300+ basic bricks to get started. What you see there stacked is about 100. The Doc is right, its just easier to keep rocking and rolling while I have everything out. Once the blocks are cast, they'll keep forever without a problem. They just need to cure for at least 24 hours before gluing together. And you really need to have enough bricks cast before starting to build.

TG was pretty good for the late 90s/early 2000s but the internet and hobbies have come a long way since then. When Gary James started TG it was good, but then he sold it off to a guy who was kind of a stick in the mud, ruined the community aspect for me. Thankfully, we have that here on Dakka.

Yes, that is 1/2" foamboard. I used to use those little plastic round head pins, but when you pull them out the plastic head would often come off. These pins are much more durable.

I think it should be a jungle weapons depot for the guard, or an Ork cave on a jungle planet that the guard are assaulting if you do the first then you could have marbo or snipers camouflaged in the jungle along with a weapon pit to keep visitors away from the mouth of the cave.

BTW..The Brisket was AMAZING!- The Brisket in the Butcher case at the Fresh Market had a nice marbled cut, but they trimmed the fat off for looks. I told he guy I needed about 1/2" fat on top for slow roasting....he knew EXACTLY what I meant, and went in the back and custom cut me 4 Lbs with a lovely layer of fat on it. I cooked it low and slow and when I cut that fat layer off...OMG it tasted like a tender roast completely infused with juice and braised from the bottom with hard cider. I can now NEVER buy another brisket from the grocery store again.I can't believe the difference it made.

Post by: dsteingass
Well GOD BLESS YOU then my friend! -You make civilized society possible for the rest of us!
I use a pan with a rack in the bottom, I pour two bottles of Hard Cider under the rack. Then I etch a diamond pattern everywhere on the membrane (like a ham-sides and fat topside too), then rub my dry blend into the diamond pattern and let it sit on the block while I clean and cut potatoes, onions, carrots, and sweet peppers. Cover with foil and then smell it at 300F for 4 hours..or an hour for every pound.
Then Ladygeek makes an amazing gravy from the cider and drippings

I've been working with packaging card a lot for Briancj's competition and it's giving me confidence to try plasticard again. I draw all of the pieces on the card before I cut them out but I'm not sure how I'd go about that on plastic. I've tried before and the plasticard just didn't take pencil very well. What do you use?
48594
Post by: dsteingass
Use whatever marks it, pen, marker, pencil. A Harder lead (2H) will probably work best. With plasticard, you only need to score it and snap it.
43045
Post by: Casey's Law
Great, thank you. I might be using too hard a pencil actually, I've been using a 7H which barely marks card to be fair. I'll try a 2H and see how it goes, failing that I'll get myself a pen with a fine tip.

Casey, kill two birds with one Hobbit and get a micron pen. that way you can mark more precisely, and also use it to write scroll work. otherwise I just use a ballpoint pen. Mine happens to be pink ink because I like pink, it shows up nicely on white, and blue/black ink hides on grey plastic.

It's the largest gaming get together here in the states as far as I'm aware of. It used to be up in mi hogan back when tsr were the big dogs. Most game companies make it to the event with thousands of tables to buy at. It's when the big boys usually show off their next big releases, so expect the news and rumors pages to go insane this weekend with pics. Some companies have already been showing their wares this week, but will have stock at the con, generally with big discounts so they don't need to haul it home. All the local stores here have been loading their uhauls to take up there.
I'm waiting for the dreamforge games pics of the leviathan Mortis, and their 15mm versions as well as all the weapon arms. Hawk games just showed off their new starter box with plastic figs a few hours ago. I wouldn't be surprised if GW actually showed something off since they've leaked space marine pics lately.

Long, long ago when I could be bothered to visit a game store, it usually had half a dozen smelly blokes in T-shirts, hanging around with a bunch of smellier kids. That was bad enough, let alone thousands of like minded individuals, with personal hygiene last on the list of priorities.
Probably smells like Dr.H's hut by now.......

Plaster stuff looks ace, Dave! The rock faces in particular are really inspiring - I've never seen someone do something on that scale with it. It looks so realistic as well - I almost want to climb it. Must weigh a ton though!
My favourite thing about working with dental plaster is that even the miscasts make perfect damaged structures

Thanks Scarp! Ortho Plaster is slightly heavier than Dental plaster. A Dental building (based) weighing about 1 Lb might weigh 1.5 Lbs in Ortho, but it's not bad. A castle..now that would be really heavy.
Well, we're home from GenCon now. Thus begins the recovery phase. I'll have to sift through my loot bags and take some pics....I've got soo much cool stuff to show you
Automatically Appended Next Post:
GenCon Loot Drop!
The Best, FIRST!
The entire 84 color line of Badger Minitaire paints! A personal good deal from Ken "Badger" Schlotfeldt -He's a good guy!
RESIN!
These tire stacks and Jersey Barriers were super cheap at a booth that specialized in 15mm pirate ships and shipwrecks
Armorcast overhead pipes! I've wanted these for a VERY long time. I need more up-pipes still, but this is a LOT
MINIATURES!
(my #1 reason for going to GenCon every year)
New Warlord Games Apocalypse survivors and zombie sprues (men and women 30 in each box buy 4 boxes got two free along with more female zombie sprues- it was a great deal.
Gaunt's Ghosts set, Many OOP Praetorians
Including two pre-painted ones that I found as well.
This was in a clearance bin!! VERY Accurate sculpts of Zombieland Talahassee and Columbus! (I will have to scratch-build that banjo now, and convert that scale mail truck I found into a Hostess truck)
The cops and hostage figs are from Armorcast's new Mobocracy:Bodycount game.
Books!
Ladygeek had much more tonnage of loot in this category
Got the new Apoc book for $60 from TheWarStore, This great reprint of Dan Abnett's Titan Graphic Novel (from GW's booth), and the Infinity Artbook, the Mercenary chick figure in the minis pic was the free fig when you bought the book.
Not pictured: Board games Zombicide and Memoir '44
Ladygeek and I had a great time, but we're both exhausted in a really good way, overall an awesome time!
We went to shows, played games, ate good food, a great time!
I played in an 8 Hour Apocalypse game,
and WON with Guard (while my ally Space Marines Died a death fit for a Guardsman -muhaha) against a horde of Orks and Tau.
I continuously plinked an Ork Gargant with lascannon fire and good rolls and knocked out 10/14 Hull Points with that solid Guard firebase I dug in behind the bunker because they rolled a natural six for initiative.
Our Manticore was their first target, and they killed it in the first turn, along with a Space Marine Drop Pod and the Dreadnaught that stepped out of it.
We all kind of thought it was over for the Imperium.......in one turn!!
On turn #2
They called a WAAAGH and It was Very painful for my esteemed Space Marine ally
But the Guard dug in (even if it's right where they deployed ) and not only repelled the WAAAGH on the right flank, then focused Pask and another Russ on the Gargant, but the Lascannons did the real damage to it.
My movement rolls sucked, but I rolled well when shooting. The Astropaths behind the Bastion all died of a Perils of the Warp roll I made, then their overseer executed them all because of my lousy rolling
As a distraction on the left flank, I brought in my sacrificial Ogryns from reserve, outflanking onto the board on their table corner
Our Baneblade came onto the table in the middle, and the juciness of that big tank target was too much for them after that
My Stormtroopers were also sacrificial , they deep striked (struck?) in front of my line, we killed their Battlewagon, and Trukk mob, leaving the right flank basically me vs. a Gargant and an Ork Boss with a zzap gun.
The zzap gun malfunctioned and drew him into my troops like the Aperature Physics gun in Portal -A crazy, but Proper-Orky way for him to die though, you have to admit
-We laughed much
Creed was inside the Bastion, they all targeted our Bastion on their firing turn, obliterating it, and Creed and company too, including all the expensive advisors
Ghazkull's super mob took my Ogryn bait and turned around. The Ork Player rolled HUNDREDS- literally HUNDREDS of dice assaulting me into oblivion
But the distraction worked long enough to take out the Gargant, and most of the Orks with it,
and finally moved my 75% HW team (passed their rout test) 3 inches into the CRATER LEFT BY OUR BASTION to claim the objective and win.
It was a great game, because we all thought we had lost it on the first turn.
One guy on our team even quit and left the table (the guy who was running Creed, the Bastion, and the Manticore),but he was a whiney bitch anyways, loudly betting $20 that our line would fall and we got shafted, blah blah, blah.
but we pulled it off on victory points at about exactly 8 hrs (4 turns)... He never paid up on his bet, cause he left the game. What a prick.
Ladygeek went across the street to the hotel to sleep and took the camera with her, and I was having fun, so there were no more pics from in the late hours of the night.
The gaming areas are full of people and gaming 24 hours a day, they never ever stop. There is a game at GenCon for EVERYBODY
Here are some of the Tables that caught my eye
This is all laser-etched wood
Deepwars, a new Underwater skirmish game, fantastic miniatures.
This is the BEST Infinity board I've EVER seen.
I'll be reposting this over on Casey's Infinity Terrain blog as soon as I'm done typing and copying and pasting codes
Another Infinity board, near it house to house style
Bolt Action
Some Old Skool GorkaMorka action too
DUST- That's Mr. Paolo Parente himself in the white hair
Armory's new Mobocracy: Bodycount game
A Hirst Arts fort
There is really no way to get a picture from any angle of the dealer hall that shows its enormousity. I lose my sense of direction in it.
GW made an effort at their booth this year though

Im really digging that infinity board...are those home made laser-cut hdf board buildings? Or something MAS just developed and was showcasing? They certainly look near MAS quality. I can already see the variations you can set up and crazy number of configurations you can get out of having several of those. I love how the sidewalk bases 'clip' together with the drain grate in that one close-up photo.

I thought I had allot of paints Dave, that collection is quite impressive...my problem is (in having allot of paints form different manufacturers), that many of them dry out before I end up using much of them. This is not the case however for the Coat d' Arms paint pots...(very first range of GW paints and now the P3 line)...the tabs and hinges may break fairly easily from use, but the seal is so good, that rarely have I had one dry up on me. Same cant be said for my Vallejo, newer GW (twisty tops more than the rest), and Rackham paints...
48594
Post by: dsteingass
This collection is as old as my hobby I've got 90s GW paints that are still good, But the GW's are all drying as you look at them, I'm not buying any more of their paints. I prefer the dropper bottles anyways, best suited to both brush painting and airbrushing. Badger paints are flip-top and good forever, the Vallejo airs have all the mil-spec colors that I like. My Vallejo Game colors don't get used much anymore, but they are all about 10 years old and still good give or take one or two that dried up over time. Most need a little thinner.
The primers and weathering stuff wouldn't fit in the shot

I really like those armorcast pipe runs, I was thinking of making a few (similar concept) out of styrene tubing as Necromunda walkway/bridges, and finish the ends as thought they are turning 90 degrees downward and immediately disappearing into the platforms they are resting on. I think it would make more structural sense to wrap them in a truss frame ...and perhaps even have some random decking and railings for cover, etc. Will have to play around with it...
Love the necromunda blue there, looking forward to seeing them finished and displayed with the rest of your awesome custom necro terrain.

Think that you have a small rust patch in your body work, clean it back to metal add filler and using the mesh as a support structure build over it, then sand back to form the desired shape.

I do love the pipes. Yes more rust.
What's the diameter on the actual pipes, about 1/2" ?
Mm got me thinking.
And the mesh is just as LDD says. It's like a support for fibreglass, to bridge larger gaps in body work.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Other point is, and I often wonder this..........why?
Why would you take pipes up and around and down again like that. Looks great and all. But really why would you as an engineer think "I know I'll take the pipes from underground, and I'll run them up 20' in the air. I will have to build a gantry for them. Oh and then I'll run them back down again just over there. And everyone will wonder why I did it, and think "maybe there is something buried under just this bit that the pipes can't run through. OOO wonder what it is?" cool."
62749
Post by: Dr H
Nice pipes.
Maybe a little more rust. Although, think if you want them to look like they still work (not overly rusty) or if they are long forgotten (very rusty).

Mm got me thinking.
And the mesh is just as LDD says. It's like a support for fibreglass, to bridge larger gaps in body work.

Other point is, and I often wonder this..........why?
Why would you take pipes up and around and down again like that. Looks great and all. But really why would you as an engineer think "I know I'll take the pipes from underground, and I'll run them up 20' in the air. I will have to build a gantry for them. Oh and then I'll run them back down again just over there. And everyone will wonder why I did it, and think "maybe there is something buried under just this bit that the pipes can't run through. OOO wonder what it is?" cool."
Could be like oil pipelines. The fluid must be warmed to make sure the viscosity is low enough for it to pump.
Either that or every so often have the pipes above ground in order to have access to them for repairs or clean outs if they get clogged.

I used to work in a cotton mill, and we had pipes that had sprung up in a building that was over 100 years old, and they had to be run through areas not designed for those pipes in the first place. So, yeah, they twisted all over the place like that.

Maybe after you close your blinds (nice pants by the way!) you could get some crackle medium to add the chipped paint on your pipes? I'm thinking of trying it out myself but it's always better when someone else buys it first :-) and yes, you did probably do stages for your painting but I may have missed it, and anyway I actually never tire of reading about how everyone does things even if i've seen it before!
say hi to your mum for me!
48594
Post by: dsteingass
I've got some crackle medium, the problem is, it isn't predictable enough for the way I want to paint. I'm thinking I want to do all brush-shaded chips and cracks. It's more work, but I think I can get there. First thing's first though, I need to get the base color right, which probably means re-basecoating the pipes. And I need to work light to dark..which is backwards from everything I'm programmed to do on terrain Automatically Appended Next Post: Damo...what pants?

Yeah, rust is a tricky thing to paint as the closer you look at pictures of real rust, the more colours you can see that all build up to the final look.
Keep bashing away at it and stop when it looks right.
There is a rust section in my hut tutorial that was pretty much all washes and can be adapted for any colour of rust you want. Peeling paint, however, I can't really help you with.

Seems dave forgot my paint over salt technique I did to exhaust pipes on my tanks
48594
Post by: dsteingass
I just can't control the salt technique
39973
Post by: Galorn
an alternative for ez texturing (using a brush is fine grit (such as very fine sand) mixed into a light paste with a paint then applied by stippling motions of an old brush. its easy to over do so just pre paint the spots where you want texture with an alternate color of paint (different from the "base" color) to mark where you want the textures to be. splop it on the marked spots then base coat and weather as normal after it dries. I inadvertantly did that with a few of my nurgle tanks and it gave a wonderful "crusty" rust texture.
2326
Post by: shasolenzabi
I use that salt technique to them scrape at the salt and pull the color off so as to expose the other color, like tin bitz under gunmetal, and then add light vomit brown touches to get that orangey rust effect

aaaavik.. you've got to go extreme SW to get to Cottonwood cove-
from there you can be invited (to infilitrate The Legion) or just go in there with Boone(he'll fire on Legion on-sight) all armored-up and up-gunned at about level 20 or depending on how you're specced out.
From there you take a raft up-river to The Fort.
Caesar is in the tallest tent on the tallest hill in the Fort (it's also where you get your army of upgraded robots for the big war). You can play all sides against each other up until a certain point. but killing Caesar doesn't matter much in the end. You just get more XP from doing all the faction quests. You'll want to do all the DLCs before starting the fight at Hoover Dam though..that's the end, and no "2 weeks later" like in Fallout 3)

I've killed pretty much everything and everyone with the abelarde kids bb gun. If it's backed up by the right sniping skills, you can kill everything in one crit. Deathclaw? Ping, splat! Brotherhood in power armour? Ping, ping, ping, splat!
Dominating everything with a completeley silent weapon, that has a 100 shot capacity, easily producable ammo and costs very few AP, got so boring I only made it to the end of the game to see what happens story-wise.

I tried some Dawn Power Dissolver last night on an old plastic marine. What I'd seen online recommended leaving it for 2 hours. I fell asleep and left it overnight. About... 12 hours. I took the ol' electric toothbrush to it, and the paint came right off. Even the black Testor's spray paint I had used as primer. Not all of it. But much more than the Simple Green which has been soaking for almost two weeks. And the Simple Green does not get off the black spray coat.
From what I see online, barring buying an ultrasonic cleaner, this seems to be my best option right now for quickly stripping models. I'll have to make sure I wash them up good after getting all the paint off though. And I may spray this one again because I missed some areas on the underside of the model.

Boone and I greased Ceasar and the whole camp yesterday. It seems like killing him should have a bigger impact on the world than it does...I just finished "Old World Blues" It had a serious note to it (along with plenty of silly), it explained why there are some advanced techs along with 1950's tech. Is it "The Lonesome road" that changes parts of the Wasteland map once you're done? (IE Nuke the NCR and that "The long 15" area opens up south of the Ranger camp?

Post by: shasolenzabi
In Lonesome road, if you want, you can launch a Nuke at one of the major factions, or decide to leave folks be as they are, but you find out that the one place near Primm is now open. That spot with the piled up wreckage and debris is marked "Courier 6 you can go home now" or whatever. the spot up between the and just behind the Republic Camp near Primm

oh!...I just found a couple of mods for FO:3
A World of Pain http://fallout3.nexusmods.com/mods/17965/?
Which adds 50+ new hardcore locations and quests to the map (brilliantly I might add, you walk through Springvale and there in the middle of the street is a manhole..after playing NV- you just think it was always there) Adds some hardcore enemies, companions, and trapped locations too.
I went to the Enclave Research building (next to the Capitol building now- previously just another edge rubble building) The light is low, and there is a tripwire, which starts a chain-reaction of mines and ultimately detonates the reactor of a motorcycle in there which kills Charron. Once I figured my way through that mess, there are at least two NAMED Super Mutant overlords/masters that are tough as balls to kill. Charron died many, many times before I realized I just wasn't leveled/geared up enough yet..poor Ghoul!
DC Interiors http://fallout3.nexusmods.com/mods/5573/?
Makes a bunch of the boarded-up or otherwise inaccessible buildings explorable.
There is also one that adds a NV style Hardcore survival mode. I'm not sure I want that..still could give some inspiration and get my Fallout fix while waiting on the next game...

I avoid gaming at all costs, far too addictive. Takes you away from what's really important, things like modelling. I have lost weeks, months and on one occasion years to the devils own work that is electronic gaming. With it's shiny screens and dazzling graphics, luring grown men to there deaths, with the inevitable controller flying across the room. Or the £50 mouse of doom that given enough time wears away your wrist. Yes I have a callus on the point of my wrist from mouse action, and at least one keyboard with blank spaces where WASD used to be. And sleep deprivation from gaming online with people from 4 different time zones at once. Watching your friends run off into the distance and fly off a cliff because they fell asleep with their head on the keyboard. It took years of training to break myself away, to find a place of solitude, a place were people of a kindred spirit, people who know about real things, like modelling, could talk freely and be beyond the evil menace of console, or worse gaming PC. But even here I find it, taking the life from my new friends, truly great men who model, crippled by the worst evil to have ever been brought forward from the hells pit that is Bethesda, FALLOUT 3, NEW VEGAS. Curse it's name.

I'm with you Cam - PC / console gaming is way too addictive. Over years of misuse, FPS now make me feel like I have motion sickness after 10-15mins of playing so I avoid them like the plague, whereas the Football (soccer) Manager type just eat away at my life. I'll stick with the odd game of Solitaire and Crazy Birds on my Samsung Galaxy - and only when I'm in a particularly boring meeting... It's sad to see so many of our Dakka mates sucked in and not spending time making models
