Damo, I have to be honest. Usually I just scroll down when I see Marines, having no personal interest in them, but yours always make me stop and admire them because your paint jobs are so amazing.
Gorgeous work as always, I am in love with the Angron model, of course can never buy it now, as you will paint it so well, and if I did, it would look pants compared.
Thanks guys! especially Dave as i know how deep seeded his distaste for marines goes! so for him to give them a positive is something special! :-)
and the rest of you! :-) thank you too! I am regretting not following this train with the Flesh Eaters when I started but the images i had back then had them with all red armour, but I realised only too late that that was a marine in the older mk of armour, now as Gits said it's a little old school but I like it :-) next thing we'll be going to paint the white Panthers lol!
Angron, dear, dear Angron! what a beast! my plan of attack is to get the base coats of colour on everything down so i can work in sections, first will be angron as I want to get him spot on, then the dying marines and finally the base!
I'll say it simple : I think it's the first time I see Alpha Legion marines that I really like.
I generally hate the blue/green color association. But you succeeded in making it look good, with the perfect blue and green tones.
What colors did you use ?
I'm amazed. Bravo.
(and I also love alle your Slaanesh stuff, as I already told you)
Minus, thanks so much! very kind words dude! I am more than happy to give you a run down of the colours :-)
I assembled and then primed them with ultramarines blue primer from the army painter range, then washed them with blue and two coats of green wash, started highlights with watered ultramarines blue, then 70.30 blue and Camo green, then 50/50 blue-green then pure camo green, then a lighter blue to add some small edge highlights on the sides and undersides of some armour panels.
and thank you as well about my Slaanesh! I do love them too and I have quite a LOT more to add to that force over the next 12 months! :-) think noise marines and contemptors as well as plenty of 'normal' marines!
Dudes & dudettes here we have some more base coating and progress on everyone's favorite uncle Angron! don't burn his sausages on the BBQ!
I think he's coming along nicely, the base is actually better than i thought it would be at this stage! the rocks and ground are how i wanted it and with some powders and detailing it'll be really nice and compliment the main model well. The Death Guard are roughed in and I think I'll really enjoy doing them when it comes to the details too Angron's armour has just had some sporadic red and brown washes added as i'm just playing around with the depth of colour of the bronze armour as i'm not sure how bright I want to highlight him up too? i'm sure I'll work it out but in the meantime here's some more Work In Progress!
Yup, you cant possibly do that mini wrong, its just soooo good, and your skillz are wicked duder.
Also, for the NotCalgar, I love the look. Very sharp and crisp. Not to mention the blends are top notch as per usual. And man where did you get that mini again? That thing is a brute, Id love to get one of those for my brothers SM force. Then he'd have something thats as large as my Warboss
Great execution so far Damo I never noticed the knuckle spikes on him before in any o h other painted versions. It's always nice to see things like that come out. Nice viscera on the dead guys too.
Looking fab damo! I really love the scheme youve worked out for the tactical marines, just fantastic work as usual. I said it before but the blue to lime green is so funky and speaks volumes for the creepiness thats to come for that chapter! The angron model looks great too, but as im not a huge CM fan, the model itself doesnt grab me that much. But thats certainly no fault of your masterful painting.
As far the captain or calgar model.., theres something that was throwing me and i couldnt really place it until now, because in effect its the same scheme as the tactical models. I feel like the light blue under coat is coming across really strong in certain areas is clashing a bit with your spot colors...namely the on the shoulder pads where the metals are...of course its still wip and so im sure its not the final shades. But i think theres one too many colors happening (?) The tactical marines are concise...green, blue, silver. But the addition of the magenta robes and then the gold...i think is making the blue stand out more? Again, its painted first class, so i guess im just offering up thoughts for discussion Anywho what do i know, im just another dork, but with that said, im hoping you finish that calgar model soon because ive been waiting on you to see how it ends up
Went to the local 'show' or fair for those non Aussies and had a good day, Dagwood Dogs, Caramel popcorn a stall full of fake lego! which looks pretty good but the best bit for me was finding this little beauty! gonna get me a ride in it soon!
next up this week it'll be more Angron! bring on Friday WooHooooooo!
Hope your not to tall to fit in the sardine can. Let us know how the ride was. Also for us non Aussies, what is a Dagwood dog? Is that prison slang for something
Riding in a tank would be frigging badass! Yesterday at a Cub Scout event we were like 50ft away from a helicopter doing a demonstration. That was pretty badass, and once the guy hit the throttle and took off, holy CRAP everyone jumped back a good 5 feet and started holding on to hats and fencing That too was pretty awesome
Has some little prick attempted to do a sprawly tag on the side of the tank or is it just really feint camo?
A dagwood dog is what we call corn dogs. It is also two other things that i will not post here since they are a little vulgar.
I will how ever spoiler a link. You have been warned.
Really love the green/blue you have going on your alpha legion tac marines. I don't know much about the alpha legion, so I can't comment on whether it's the "right" shade, but it's really distinctive and nuanced. Nice work !
Angron is also coming along nicely. Nice work on the death guard - look very much like the colours used in the FW book.
It's a great model and you are totally doing it justice. Looking forward to seeing the face painted - speaking of which congrats on the competition you ran. Very nicely done!
Only thing that made me sad in the three pages of catching up I've had to do is that your IF have been retired? Heresy!
Hey man! Cool tank pics Seems you've switched priorities to the angron model so ill hold on to my visions of a finished calgar model (i keep saying that because i dont know properly who hes supposed to be) until you turn your focus back to it But i am excited to see what you do with it, and afterall, those bada$$ tacticals need a leader methinks!
I'm not sure I want to finish him to be honest BB? he's not exciting me as I usually get with a model! if I get a few who 'really' want me to finish him then i will, but I was thinking perhaps stripping him and giving him away? and then using the Tacs to either begin my Slaanesh Tacticals or throw them in with my FleshEaters to get to that company I want :-)
If you really decide not to finish him, maybe rather than strip, send it to BB to finish up! Then we can really see his vision come to life, and he seems more excited by it than you are at this point.
whalemusic360 wrote: If you really decide not to finish him, maybe rather than strip, send it to BB to finish up! Then we can really see his vision come to life, and he seems more excited by it than you are at this point.
lol you tease. The model IS awesome and leads an awesome squad...but it truly is damo's vision im seeing/envisioning anyways Itd be hard to take over after his progress...Besides im stuck painting heads
I'll finish him later then! lol and then I'll send him to Bebop as a present :-)
the Tacs will be seconded and re assigned to my FleshEaters and my *ahem* spare resin marines shall be Slaanesh converts to get that part of the force off the ground so that's those spares sorted!
only bad/good thing is now I've been chopping and changing my ideas i've collected a few choice models I now have 'lying around' mortis contemptor anyone lol! looks like the Fleshies are gonna get a whole lotta new toys soon! I went back through and I've still got a bunch of stuff for them waiting.....
and I just want to give the heads up I hope to have Angron finished this weekend! I've already worded up Nerdwench 'Not to bother me woman!!' and to only knock on the Nerd lair if 'you better be bringin' yo man food!' ...... of course the actual conversation was more ' sweety do you mind if i finish this model I'm painting for Whaley over the weekend? I really want to get it done for him, yes I can rub your feet if you want? and you'd like a coffee wuv you xxx'
Kinda makes me think we should do a secret santa for xmas! you know, a group of us puts down a choice of 3 minis theyd like for whatever reason...army or whatever....we all get mixed up and its randomized then we all paint a mini for a friend on dakka! Though you dont know whos painting your mini and which mini it is! Itd be fun and i always paint better when its for someone else! Though damned it would be hard to keep from posting progress on dakka LOL. hmmm ....
What, you guys are bloody puppet masters aren't you! saturating my innocent thread with thoughts of perks and 600 pages of NEARLY NAKED PERKS...... CHICKS
Ooooh secret squirrels! lol I'm already part way into the NSFW thread!....at work :-)
Automatically Appended Next Post: And does anyone know the size comparison with the FW Flesh Hounds? I'm hoping to use some as the base for some spawn for my Slaanesh force but can't find how big they compare with things??
I just also bought a DE Medusae to convert as Slaanesh sorcerer done as 'Pinhead' :-)
I'll finish him later then! lol and then I'll send him to Bebop as a present :-)

BWAHAHAHAAA!!! What a sissy bearded girlman! HA!
What that translates to is "Hey...this guy is already preparing for the married life, and he is certainly on the right track because thats exactly how I get anything done around my home as well!"
Phew! I was so close! I nearly finished Angron today but not quite. But I am proud to show you a bunch of work in progress shots to show you where i'm at with him he's turning out really nicely imo, I quite like the base and the colour of his armour which is highlighted up to a really bright bronze, need to work on the leather straps and details and his face then the cloak and he'll be done all but a touch up session on the dead marines hope he looks as good as what you thought i'd do?
first up the base Angron will stride through decimating friend and foe alike!
and now the man himself
Love to know what you think so far (as per usual )
and I think ages ago I said I wanted to do some youtube vids just playing around with some tutorials and silly stuff, well I have been working on making the host for these vids yes, the host will be me, but not really 'me' so I'd like to introduce you to Damo....... the Muppet
Or like me I could just add more to the collection? ;-) I even have a couple more in the thinking process now..... I think he'll be fun to muck around with once I glue the beard on and stuff, then the creative starts!
and how'd you go with your interview? d'you get the job dude? I've got a interview on Monday for a promotion too and the nerves are getting to me!
Angron is fantastic Damo. His victims are appropriately gory, though in truth... with a chain axe I think there should be blood spatters on the big man himself. I love the pencil mustache... makes him look like a sleazy 1950's add exec.
The muppet... not much to say there. Made me smile, can't wait for the vids. Nuff said?
Interview went really well. I'm pretty sure I have the job, but don want to jinx it. They hire people in as part time to ensure they are a good fit for the team, then you go permanent if there's a position available. Right now they have lots of openings. The pay that I was told in the phone interview was not enough, especially if I'm part time for a couple months. But in he face to face interview, I addressed it and the gentleman in charge of that said that number was way off especially with my management skills. He of course has to speak with someone else who will contact me and I should know by Monday.
Good luck with your promotion interview. They wouldn't even bother unless they knew you had what it takes for the job. I'd say don't sweat it, but I know how rediculous that sounds when it comes to your career.
woah damo, you really won me over on that model. I usually enjoy the hitech cyber vibe over the more baroque things that 40k does, but dang, youve painted it so well i just gotta keep looking. The bronze and reds are a great contrast to the bone of the poor saps being torn apart. And the giant gash across the one guys stomach just looks brutal. Very cinematc piece here. And quite the undertaking. I can see why you switched your focus to this model, when something grabs you, you just gotta run with it!!
Cheers
BB
Thanks guys, I love painting Angron he's a lot of fun and as you'd probably learnt about me by now, if I get inspired and feel the need and passion then i just go nuts! :-)
also, no he doesn't have any moustache or facial hair! I haven't finished his face yet and the angle just gave him that impression ;-) still gotta figure out what tribal face paint to give him without ruining the detail? any ideas?
and I will do some spatters of blood when it's all done, wanted to get the basics painted first before i went ott with gore, it'd be a shame to ruin the sculpt with too much blood, i'm also trying to work out how to make 'wet chunks' of flesh? like Gits said, those big ass chain axes aren't subtle and I'm hoping to lay some fresh meat around a bit!
The updated Angron is looking pretty bloody sweet, Damo. I like the subtle touch of his lower lip. The red of his armour and the viscera on the Death Guard is also looking really nice.
Your muppet is a little disturbing, but cool. Can't wait to see him inked up.
Thanks dudes, Az it's good to see you back here! :-) glad you like the Muppet..... and the Angron, i've got to find time to finish him soon but the next two weeks my painting days are actually not available to me :-( so I have to do some creative painting I think or he won't get done for 3 weeks! and i don't think I could not paint for that long and you'd all forget who i was lol! :-)
Hey San! thanks dude! :-) still a way to go on the reds for the leather but i agree it's a good shade so far to compliment the bronze! i'm happy with how it's all pulling together, his face i'm especially happy with, it's working well thankfully!! and I sure can tell you how i do it if you really want to know? i'm a little aprehensive about the tribal face tattoo though? I'm thinking just the red V on his forhead and perhaps his chin will be enough? or i'm scared it will distract too much from the details around his eyes amd mouth which really are a focal point for the model in regard to how it 'feels' thoughts?
Azazelx wrote: You can always skip the tattoos/warpaint entirely. I think the face looks good as is.
Sure it looks good, but the problem is it looks as good as all the other good Angrons Ive seen on the net. Tattoos or warpaint would set his apart from all the others in a huge way
I could skip the paint, but the thing is it's for Whalemusic and he wants the paint :-) and I do love me a challenge! I think it's going to depend on what and where I add the marks? I'll do it slowly so you guys can talk me through it, I'll start with the forehead triangle thing you see and then we'll see where next eh! :-)
Hey, anyone thinking of buying Kor Phaeron & Erebus? or more specifically, anyone willing to go halves so i can get Kor Phaeron's arms? :-) I can't justify $100+ for 2 arms! even though I usually don't care, this is just a bit much!
Yeah I'd hoped I could find a cast but my usual cast-fu is turning up nothing yet :-( and it sucks 'cos i've got such a good idea for a Termiator armed captain for my FleshEaters!
whalemusic360 wrote: You could use the other stuff for the FE as well. Use the rest of the body as a base for a termi librarian and ol Ebs would make a boss chaplain.
O.K if I knew how to inbed GIFS and vids on here you'd be getting a rather large slow hand clap about now! that is a BRILLIANT idea for me! and i can already see it happening! my plan is for a Termie Captain to have the Praetor body with those claws so oyur thoughts have now spawned more wallet hating ideas
The claws are about the only nice things I see off those models as well. If I was going to make any sort of army with an bird motif I'd hav he captain of the termies with those.
It was a shame the final model looked nearly nothing like the first teaser pic! 'cos that teaser was an amazingly beautiful model, well, as beautiful as an old man can be I suppose? then they changed the head (Oh my how Derp) and the claws! the original ones looked better imo but these seem to have their purpose for conversions.....
Glad I can help (hurt), lol. I actually like the final version more than he wip. He isn't a space marine, they had to do something to make him look more human.
This may or may not upset some of you but here goes: I've applied for a manager position at work and have gone very well through the process so far, there is someone who I believe will obtain the role over me, but my current manager plus the Hotel manager as well as the Human resource manager have all expressed their desire for me to leave night shift and return to the roster doing days again (albeit with more responsibility even if I don't get the job) this is good in the way that they can see i'm good at what i do and my interaction with guests is top tier. But the bad is I will lose some of my paint time, not enough to have me disappear! but enough for me to look at my current projects and determine one has to go :-(
So, I have a choice to make which army gets sold?
Imperial Guard? or Slaanesh? and is anyone interested in either of them as they stand?
I know this is like selling a child! but hey, I don't have kids......
Well, first off, congrats that they WANT to give you more responsibility and recognize you are an asset instead of an ASSet .
I've mainly been excited to see your work on the slaanesh stuff, so I would vote for you to keep that, but in the end , which do you enjoy more is the most important. Either way I want to see more Angron.
Thanks Theo, it's funny but I've been thinking about ditching a force over the last couple of days since my interviews but as soon as I actually put it out there in writing I get all squidgy in the gut! there's something about the IG I love, the big tanks, the Marbo I did, the fact I have Jason Strafe-em flying a Venetta!
and then the Slaanesh, I love the Hell-Sak and the Oblits and the Hell bitches, and i've just bought a Medusae model to convert for the force too not to mention I soooo want to paint the Kakophoni marines :-)
So i'm torn, perhaps I'll just buy a nother shelf instead? then they can sit and wait until I undoubtedly will want to paint one or both again? that way i can also feel free to do some more commission work! speaking of, once Angron is finished I'll be open for another project slot PM me if anyone's interested? I take payment in models it's easier for me that way :-)
also started bidding on a metal 3-up space marine model! be cool if i score that one!
Dude, if it's just shelf space that's making you consider getting rid of one of them, then ship them over to me. I've got ton's of shelf space, and your free to come visit them anytime you want , while your here I'll even let you paint a few more to join them.
I can understand the love of imperial guard, just not the fun of painting all those meat shields. Having the variety of troops they have is a double edged sword. You can field each type, and have such a pool to draw an army from, you just have to paint them.
I know you could get some major cash for either army you offer up, but I think the Chaos army might sell faster just because you don't see such well painted chaos stuff out there as often as imperial guard.
Shelf space at your place eh! you never know Theo! you may just end up with some original Nerd on there one day :-)
I think to clear my head I shall re organize and tidy the Nerd Cave today which will also serve the purpose of finding cool stuff to inspire me and also chuck in the DCM secret santa bag! :-)
I vote for you to buy another shelf, both projects work really well together as they are very different which will give you a break jumping between them.
I vote for you to give in your Slaanesh army to me, and then Khorne will be pissed, all the better coz he's the one I'd serve last if I was a Chaos minion !
I also vote for buying another shelf. You tend to follow what you feel like painting at the moment more than what you "need" for an army.
That said, if you do decide to sell one, let me know. If I can swing the buck I certainly would.
Also, I have another FW order coming up, so if there one of the HH character fellas you'd like a go at, let me know. I can pay you in models again, or moneys. I'm easy like that. Speaking of, did your package show up yet? I'd think it would be this week.
Cheers guys, I tidied the Nerd Lair and managed to re purpose an entire shelf and a bit! :-) so it looks like we will all see the eventual finish of those forces I've started! YAY!
and speaking of YAY! I got a package from Whalemusic today! :-) I didn't realize when i read his last post here that he's actually sent me the models as payment for doing Angron but obviously I do now lol! and I got some beautiful stuff in there too, some Ork goodness in a flyer (so what's the best armament style?) already started gluing it together :-) also a Slaanesh chariot which will certainly test me but should go nice with some Hell bitches and some other models I didn't recognize but should make a sweet Van Saar Gang! not to mention a TRANSFORMER! OMG! so cool and such a nice thing to include!
all that goodness aside, Whaley if you want some more painting done PM me and i'm certainly open to another model or two?
Glad you liked the transformer, I remember you saying you were a TF fan. I picked up a lot job of Classics, and already had him, so thought you might enjoy him. You could even paint him up, if you were feeling real brave.
The random dudes are from Miniwargamining's Dark Potential. It was a indigogo for a game that ended up not taking off. Thought you might make good Slaneshi cultists out of them, but gangers are a good idea as well.
As for the Orky flyer: Yeah, as far as I heard the Dakkajet is the bestest of all but then, the other ones look so much prettier. Looking forward to what you're making of the model!
Imperial Guard? or Slaanesh? and is anyone interested in either of them as they stand?
Glad to hear that you've decided to just put one on hold and come back to it. Much better than selling it off on impulse. Get your mate to come over and play one of them against the other one or your FTs, or play one of them against his BAs. In short, try and get a few games going with the different armies so you can appreciate them on another level aside from the cool modelling projects that they are.
Thanks guys, Az, Siggy, whaley, yeah i feel better keeping them, I am buying a new shelf system for my nerd lair too which will fill the wall between my paint desk and the door, so even more room! which means i can collect more or just collect some other cool shelf things like Transformers or LEGO trucks, or Todd McFarlane toys. or.......... More marines
Dakkajet eh! what do they have? are they more shooty guns? don't really know even by looking at the pics what the differences are?
Thanks Siggy, glad you approve of Angron! not as good as yours honestly but I'm pretty pleased with the progress and I am confident the end result will still be quite nice! in a bloody kind of way!
Az! you want me to fly you down one day for a game? I need a tutor
Thanks Weety! I took the pups to the beach for NerdWench's birthday yesterday they had a good day in the sand! while i got rope burn trying to be clever don't tie two big dogs together with rope everyone, doesn't end well when there's another dog running at them and you grab the rope to stop them!!
anyway it's not mini related photo's but cute non the less and i promise some more updates soon! I have some more work on the Ork flier whatever it is done and then I'll need your help arming it etc.
Cheers dude! I'll certainly get painting soon I promise, I am having withdrawals from my brushes! so as usual i'll be jumping around a bunch of stuff as soon as i can to show you! :-) the Ork flier is particularly fun for me and the ideas behind it....
The look your lab is giving you in the first pic made me lol. "These two flufballs better not mess up another photo or I'm gunna OH FOR THE LOVE OF GOD YOU BLINKED AGAIN!"
Lol, yeah that's about right! I 'nearly' had a heap of really nice shots but they were foiled by one fluffy or the other! had a greta one of Osc but it got ruined by a white head to the lens!!
Aw man that looks like it was a blast!
Your pups are still adorable, though I'm curious as to how many centuries it'll take to get all the sand out of their hair...
I particularly like the pic second from the bottom. I'm really digging the depth of focus and extreme angle of the horizon. Plus the look of pure contentment "Yaaaaay! Im on a beach. Yay!"
As far as the Ork flyer.... I think the Dakkajet would be your ideal option. Lots of shooting, and double as much during a Waaagh!
As much as I like fire, the Burna Bomma doesnt seem worth it, as its mostly low AP flame weapons.
The Blitza I can see being fun, however there is that natural Random Ork element with the Big Bomms. (I think Id actually play with it more than the Dakkajet, myself.... but then again i run a ton of Shokk attack Guns and other purely unpredictable units xD )
Although, you could be particularly masochistic and self-loathing and magnetize all the options like I did for Gits' Fighta Wing
nerdfest09 wrote: Thanks guys, Az, Siggy, whaley, yeah i feel better keeping them, I am buying a new shelf system for my nerd lair too which will fill the wall between my paint desk and the door, so even more room! which means i can collect more or just collect some other cool shelf things like Transformers or LEGO trucks, or Todd McFarlane toys. or.......... No worries, Nerds - while hoarding may not be the best option, you're far from that at this stage, and you're much better off hanging on to these projects that you've put so much time and effort into to revisit and play with. I'm not sure how useful I'd be as a tutor for you, as I haven't played 6th at all yet (got to get that mancave conversion done to the garage still!) but I';d love to give you a game or three of 40k and various other things someday!
Best wishes to Ms.Nerd as well for her birthday. However, you should have moved just slightly to your left when taking this pic - it would have looked like the dog was wearing an adorable little hat!
Thank you everyone! Nerdwench had a lovely day I made sure of that, I bought her a food processor Bwahahahahahahah! ........ and other stuff more suited :-)
But then again, she did buy me an Iron for Valentines day once.......
Az, a game one day for sure even if i have to scoot over to Melbs to catch ya! maybe towards the end of next year when I'm off on 6 weeks long service we can work something out if you're keen/serious? :-)
and I so want to photoshop silly hats on Oscar now......
Dakka jet needs huge ammohoppers on each wing to make it more shooty (read as even less aerodynamic than GW standards). The large ammo hoppers would also ensure pilot longevity as they have to land less to reload, we know they aren't to great at landing
If your going o photoshop, hen when he jet is painted I wan to see pilot puppies the black baron and cotton ball wingdogs for he win.
The black baron eh! I have a small resin Labrador I was painting to have as a mascot for my IG, I could cut and shut something silly :-)
What sort of hoppers would a Hercules have if a Hercules had hoppers? and landing will be an issue as my plane has no landing gear and two dirty great props on the wings lol!
whalemusic360 wrote: It doesnt need fuel, its an ork plane. It works because they think it does.
To this day this is one of the most insulting things GW ever made up about Orks. SO much damage was done to 40k with 3rd edition and nobody suffered as badly from it as Orks did. Not even Squats.
Apparently she's 25!? I'll have to show you guys one day and you can see if you can pick her age :-) yep, I do live life on the edge!
I missed the whole Ork mechs working because they believe they do! I didn't realize that was a thing with them? have they changed it to date? i'm just gonna throw on some shoota and a couple of bombs under the wings for looks and play it (one day) as a dakkajet :-) I'm only waiting on some GS and a new toy and i can finish it off as the start of my Ork project for 2014....
Oh i also got a reply from Armorcast today, apparently they will be sending my order today for me! they appologized which was nice and I politely told them over 2 months was a no no! but I hold no malice and just want to use their products! so i'll keep you posted!
You should check on that Gits? it's pretty poor form from a suposedly reputable company that makes such nice things! :-( I only dropped $100 but it's still $100 worth of products i needed or $100 I can spend elsewhere! like posting things to Dakkaites!

I have a Nerdy original on the shelf in my livingroom. Talk about a center piece

To clear this whole thing up - the whole "Ork technology only works because they believe in it" stems, as far as I remember, from 3rd edition Codex Orks. During that time GW thought it was a clever idea to have every single bit of fluff told from the Imperium's perspective and I think that even in that "report from some AdMech guy" they said "appearantly" Ork technology works only because they believe in it because they're magical fairy creatures (which to an extent is true I suppose). However, looking at the Imperium's understanding of technology ("Things work because of the Machine God and these ancient instructions on how to build stuff. NO, you don't need to understand how it works now shut up, renew the runes on the toaster and pray to the machine god that it won't burn our toast tomorrow morning!") I guess it's just different approaches to engineering. Orks know it by geneic memory or divine talent, Adeptus Mechanicus knows because they've done it like that for millenia (maybe added a skull every few decades). Squats probably were the only ones who built/designed things in a fashion anywhere close to how we do it nowadays.
Alright, sorry for this fluffery. Anyway, I find your approach to modelling your Orky plane very appropriate. The rules change all the time anyway and GW's pendulum of power goes all kinds of weird ways somtimes. Me, I find the Dakkajet to be the least interesting looking out of all the options. Especially with Orks it probably is okay to build your plane either way. As long as it's got some guns on it it will be a proper enough Dakkajet.
With full support from Nerdwench I got holed away in the Nerd lair today fueled on coffee and....... well,........more coffee and I finished ANGRON!
before I show you the images, I would like to just say I thoroughly enjoyed painting this model, it went together beautifully and just oozes character and savagery the pics don't really do him justice, the sculpting of his face is perfect and he has an unhinged psychotic visage as he charges through the hapless marines on his base, I was very impressed with the whole journey and i really hope I have done him justice with my brushes!? I gave him gore on his feet and hands but held back on spattering him excessively and also painted his cloak to appear as if it's soaked up blood as he goes across the battle!
There is a lot of pics here and some are pretty similar but I just couldn't pick ones that showed how nice he looks
And I got a couple of shots of the Dakkajet-thing the nose is just filled out with air-dry clay until my gs arrives I also shortened the guns on the front so they didn't interfere with the shape I'm going for with the jet, the wings have been cut and I've made some engines from the missile launchers from the Valkyrie kit. The tubing is the start of where I will put the propellers (I know a C-130 needs 4 ) I also plan on attempting my plastic welding again by running a very thin strip of plastic rod along gaps and places and then coating it in plastic glue until it softens, then I'll push into it to firmly secure it to the plane and give it a welded look along the length I reckon i'll also chuck a bomb or 2 under the wings just to give it a Hercules plane look!
Well, I really hope you like Angron and the Dakkajet! love to see what you think!
My word, Damo. You've kind fk out done yourself with Angron. He looks really good. Love the deep reds of his armor and you done a seriously awesome job painting his face. Death Guard guys look great too and they provide an excellent contrast to Angry Ron. Simply awesome!
Wow... Just wow. That's the best Angron yet, bar none. You have surpassed yourself Damo.
I think what makes your Angron so good is your lack of colours. You've got what? 4 colours (red, brass, flesh, silver). There's no fancy wet blending, no OSL, no overdone tricky crap. I mean hell, I can't even see any visible highlights on Angrons armour and yet it doesn't take anything away from the over all model. Just a damn solid paint job and one insane looking face. One of those "less is more" paint jobs.
Snrub wrote: One of those "less is more" paint jobs.
I'm going to support this feeling.
The job is amazing, all in blending & subtle hues... Thanks for pointing out the "cape drenched in blood", that's almost perfectly rendered... I think your version looks better than the "official" FW one !
Kudos, NerdSire
Also, there must be something I've missed about your DakkaJet nose...
Great job as others have said, he really doesn't need any sort of fanciness as he is the stick the emperor uses to beat stuff down with. This is seriously the best version I've seen to date.
Spoiler:
i know koala doesn't mean Koodos in Austrailian, its really a New Zealand thing
He looks really exceptional Damo. I'm super excited to get him. It is really tricky to get a wall of bronze come through with such depth. So much better that I could have hoped for.
Jet is shaping up well too. Nice to see you stepping out and going for some conversions lately. If it turns out as solid as the Hellsac, it will be a unique and flavorful piece as well.
::whistles:: late to the party but i must echo everyone elses positive reinforcement. Your treatment of this scene is utter visceral bliss. Fantastic painting and not only technically but the mood you captured is really setting the perfect tone for the sculpt. Dang, whale is a lucky guy to get this badboy in the mail. I hope its not too hard to let it go Congrats on a perfect completion of a big project! Love it! (and the blood is perfect)
Angron looks good.
I would have painted the triangle tatoo on the top of his head another color than red. This would have driven the eye to his face. The face itself is well painted but is a bit "lost" within all this red and bronze so it doesn't really pop, wich is sad.
That is really impressive, I love the red armour and I think the cloak is fantastic. His face paint looks a bit Legion of Doom but I suppose that is quite suitable. Very nice photos as well.
Thanks everyone! all of your comments were absolutely what i was hoping for because that's what i was aiming for, a good looking solid paint job with nothing to take away from the model itself but still make you go "Oh now that's cool!"
when you see the model in other lighting (I was forced to take these at night I was so excited) Angron really pops and his face is the focus for sure, I held back on the face tatts to just the triangle and the chin colour as I didn't want him to look too 80's glam rock his armour was a great experiment too, it's not exactly highlighted but it is the brightest brass is on the more polished areas and where the light may hit.
I also had a wrap session today I like to get a bunch of things together and post it all at once so i don't get confused! so today I wrapped and addressed the 3 prizes for the Nerdcademy award, a little pressie for KC, Angron for Whaley and the DCM Secret Satan just gotta find a tube for Gits picture I painted and that can go away to a new home too!
So next week I have a free paint day so to speak! need to determine my project order, I'm thinking a bit more of my FleshEater upgrade painting and maybe some Ork?
Angron. Damn Damian, that turned out awesome indeed! I really like the fact you added war paint in the end, and went with something that shows up but isnt distracting what so ever. Very nicely done as always man. If I had to suggest anything to add to it, maybe the tips of the fur on his clock should be gloss. That way it gives the look of the blood pooling off at the end, which would look like the tips are slick with blood, and the further back blood stains are either dried up, or so low in blood that they lose that gloss look. Over all though very very nice.
And a DAKKAjet Brings a tear to my eye seeing you work on the bestest army in the whole game
Az, a game one day for sure even if i have to scoot over to Melbs to catch ya! maybe towards the end of next year when I'm off on 6 weeks long service we can work something out if you're keen/serious? :-)
and I so want to photoshop silly hats on Oscar now......
Sounds like a date, big boy. I'm aiming to get the garage properly converted into a gaming mancave over the summer once work winds down. It's going to be a hell of a job, but the sweet rewards!
Maybe a photoshopped picture of Oscar wearing a hat could be painted over and used as a banner for one of your units? Actually.. I've got one of Leonard's head that would be perfect to do just that. And he fancies himself as a bit of a black panther/tiger/lion mashup anyway...

What sort of hoppers would a Hercules have if a Hercules had hoppers? and landing will be an issue as my plane has no landing gear and two dirty great props on the wings lol!
There you go! A mascot for the Vendettas as nose art. Black Lab wearing IG Helmet! (or a lovely hat of some description)
Automatically Appended Next Post: Lovely work on Angron the Angry. You managed to retain the face as a strong focal point of the model, and the face paint doesn't undermine or obscure the detail of the face, which is what my concern was earlier. Very nice use of the DG to provide contrast to Angron as well, and they come across muddied and battered from the campaign as well as the more obvious bloodied and dismembered.
Kudos.
Well I managed to get all my packages down to the post office today to send off! and walked home about $100 poorer! but it's a great relief knowing that it's all winging its way to the prize winners, Secret Santa's and collectors around the globe! only thing I didn't manage to get organized was Gits picture I did for him but it shall go next time
I loaded my Angron pics onto Dakka this afternoon but haven't been able to change the links from the ones i posted here, so I just have this little link to the gallery if anyone wants to have a vote or two on some pics? would love it if you could!
it's nearly that time of the week again, paintin' time! but after Angron i'm thinking I may just fiddle around and take it fairly easy this week by doing more touch ups on the FleshEaters and some of my Ork Mek as well as just assembling all my resin spare parts into 2 squads of marines for my Slaanesh force so while there may be pics later, they probably won't get you excited!
I also got a reply from Armorcast and they have shipped my order a couple of days ago once i get them and order my tiled floor parts from Angry badger then i cannot wait to finally start my Zone Mortalis project in earnest! it's gonna be sweeeeeeeet!
20 years, or 2weeks solid of just painting, with that song "youre the best around" playing on a loop with way too much sweat and tongues sticking out the side of your mouth.
Damo, next time you do something bronze/brass -pick up the Vallejo air color called "Bright bronze" you'll have fun with it. it doesn't look like much by itself, but ..well..just trust me.
Cheers Dave, I used one of the range for him but I don't think it was Bright Bronze, and i can't recall which colour it was! but I do love how realistically the paint shines like buffed metals! so going on your opinion which i trust like no other in regards to paint ranges :-) i'll certainly pick up a few others to have a go with, I'm itching to try the gold range but don't want it to overshadow my Sang Guard models in coolness! which means another project lol!

Counts as Dante:
body & jump pack from Lord executioner model.
cut off arms and replace with sanguinary guard arms and convert angelus boltgun to be melta. cut and paste lord executioner axe head onto Vanguard axe shaft.
head? I prefer bare heads for characters as it gives more personality to them and i enjoy painting them :-) but should I fins a head and make my own death mask helmet? model shall be painted a darker more brassy gold with red and bone accents.
Counts as sangiunor?
Counts as Astorath?
Captain Korvydae from FW as a base?
Counts as Tycho?
Master of Relics body as a base model?
Do you have a sang guard kit? Cant remember what is in the FE at this point, a group photo is needed. I can hook you up with bits for said conversions if you need em.
Hmmm Ivanus Enkomi has been considered too more for lemartes though! and Asterion Moloc body for a Terminator armoured Captain build with the Kor Phaeron claws they will happen too!
hopefully a new toy that arrived can help with the birdie details on Korvydae, i got a little hobby thing like a dremel it works well but has all these attachments but no instructions on what they all do
I think i do have spares from my Sang Guard kit at home? I've days off tomorrow (after sleep) so i'll have a look and see what i actually have around for use and it looks like i need to re photograph my finiahed versions of counts as Seth who's my current leader and my counts as Mephiston who hasn't met a table yet they both look pretty nasty cool!
Do we have any more ideas for model bashing I can use? I want to make my own counts as for each important character in my FE force, the Sanguinor and Astorath are proving tricky, but Tycho will be fairly basic as the Master of relics is nearly the same pose
Automatically Appended Next Post: Aaaaaand here we are again with the double post :-)
O.k, here's what happened today, I went to my local hospital to see my specialist (insert 'noone can help you' joke here) and was informed my lungs are pretty much shot through no fault of my own (i've been a chronic asthmatic since a prem birth) :-( but they've got me trying a new drug to see how it performs with me plus I need to change a few things around the home to help it work. this is going to leave me needing a financial injection at some stage soon. So what i am going to need to do is sell my Slaanesh force but only when I've finished the painting of it all and it's up to scratch by my standards, it's the force I am getting most creative with but don't feel the need to nurture it forever like my marines and Guard, I will be focussing on getting what i have for it painted and then see what the general consensus is for selling it with regards to price etc. on the plus side it will leave more shelf room for me to fill with Guard stuff at a later date!
so far I have 20 marines to paint with resin pads.
Emperors Children Contemptor
Decimator engine
those 5 Termies I've started
and already done
The mighty Hell-Sak
Chaos Lord
3 Oblits
10 Hell-Bitches
Mauler Fiend
sorry that's kind of a depressing situation but I need to think logically about my health at this point and if i can paint things I love doing and then sell them to get me feeling better, then that's a good thing right? plus this way they may actually see the tabletop one day :-)
Sorry man, I hate hearing bad news about friends, keep us in he know on what's happening. Wish I could be a financial help, but the new job is starting just in time here. The slaanesh army should bring a good amount with the creativity behind it , though I hope it won't have to come to that. We're there or you, the nerdwench, and the puppies. Needless to say my prayers are with you.
get a lawyer, sue forgeworld for the toxic resin they use that has damaged your lungs. Worst case scenario you get laughed out of court. Best case is full hospital coverage. Middle of the road would be a 30k force, and I'm not talking the 31 millennium .
Man, that is grim. Guess that's what happens for exposing your chest in public Whilst it is utterly crap that you have to sell them, though, at least there is the possibility of a positive outcome.
:( Man, i hope you are on the mend soon Damo! Dont regret your decisions. Its true what they say, you have nothing if you dont have your health. I Can really identify with this. Painting and modelling is extremely irritating to my nerves and my hands and wrists and i have to take major breaks, sometimes months at a time just to have the burning go away. Take care of yourself first, so you can enjoy painting to the fullest. Sending you good vibes dude!
Damn, that's a real shame to hear - both about your health issues and the need to sell the army. Hopefully the new medication can help you be more comfortable.
I'll make a couple of suggestions about the army sale, though...
1) Have a good think about it, and if you feel you might regret selling them in the future, don't do it.
2) Stop buying new stuff. A few cheap things now and then is one thing, but maybe stop on the new army front and put that cash towards the meds.
3) You seem to really enjoy painting, you're fast, and people in this thread love your stuff. Maybe look to doing some more commissions for money (restrict it to characters/etc rather than hordes of troops) and put that money towards the meds? Or save the hobby money and do commissions for models in trade.
4) If you do sell them, make sure you get a worthwhile amount for them. There's no point going bargain basement just to get rid of them. Hell, I'm tempted to put in an offer as a caretaker thing, so you can buy them back down the line...
Thank you to EVERYBODY for the good wishes for my health! I really am thankful i have friends like you all out there around the globe! I've had a couple of days to mull things over and get all my information sorted, they're trying me on a drug used to treat asthma and allergies in children called Montelukast but at an adult dosage to see how it reacts to my condition, if it doesn't work as they need it to, then i'll have to be have a blood infusion of another new drug to see if it attacks the antibodies causing my lungs to treat everything as an allergy. That's the basic summary and i'm hoping it will give me some relief
The first lot of drugs i'm on are pricey but not crazy like some can be which i'm thankful for, the infusion if I need it will be through the hospital so fingers crossed it won't get that far!
and I have thought long and hard about my models, Slaanesh will go, not sure when but when i have it all painted to a level i'm proud of then the sale of it will just take a little pressure of me in general incase I need it, i'll still be more than happy to do some commissions and get paid in models, that way I don't have to buy as much myself i'll still buy little things to suprise and astound you.
So for now, I'll keep you guys posted on what's happening with my health and keep blogging away as normal
and speaking of normal, how normal is a Dakkajet? it doesn't have a final polish yet but it's nearly there, I added a bunch of rivets (as I should!) and made some props for the wings, I think it's looking pretty sweet so far!
Began assembling my Slaanesh marines finally too! a boring shot but needed to keep me pumped!
DakkaProp is looking good.
Although I think the new nose could do with a little more bulking out on top so there is a smoother transition from the original body to the nose.
The propellers look suitably orky.
Scratch some panel lines into the GS. Mount two head lights (sort of like eyes) on the top half of the nose. And put some nice spikey spinners on your props.(nose cones on the prop centers.) Possibly make the trailing edges of your props a bit jagged.
Ah she's still work in progress I only have that size plastic at the moment so was doing the best with what I had around for the props, and the nose is a nod to the C-130 Hercules who do have that little bulb nose (kinda cute really)
I'll see what i can find to bulk the blades out on the propellers and i'll attempt some panel lines too, it's my first Orky conversion or build so I'm loving the input
Do you have access to any Koptas? The blades from those would look wicked awesome on your Dakkajet!
Cool concept on the props, I haven't seen anyone else do that. And it is so perfectly Orky. Dey git whutz dey fine an' fixz it wif lotz o' gubbins an' red paint.
Yay!! glad you got it alright Mel & it's already taken place among your spoils!, and KC you would be correct in assuming Nerdwench took the photo much to her chargrin! i'm actually thinking every year 3rd place should be a 'Nekkid' Nerd'? 1st a Nerdcademy award and 2nd? if that doesn't get people wanting to enter... I don't know what else will
and secondly on the agenda for tonights meeting, it's the sale of Slaanesh! yes, that's right folks it's been pondered and bought forward to entice a sale I was going to swap shop them but seeing as some are resin models of well known brands i thought it best to parlay in my own thread with offers!
So, what am i asking and what have I got?
I have painted:
10 raging heroes Demonettes
1 Custom built Heldrake- Hell-Sak
1 Custom Chaos Lord- Azreema
1 slightly customized Maulerfiend
1 custom and well hung veiny Demon Prince
3 Hitech Oblits
5 Assembled and primed Termies
and the lot painted
I'm also going to include with the sale, an unassembled Mauler Fiend in resin, an unassembled Emperor's Children Contemptor Dreadnought in resin, an assembled and primed and partially painted Decimator Daemon Engine, purple dice & the mold for scale armor. so all you need is to add some troops and you're set!
now for the kicker, how much? would I be asking too much for $300 Aus + post? let me know if you or anyone may be interested in helping out
Buying those units alone would be about £300 (AUS$515). And that's UK prices, not AUS Then count in your conversions, the amazing paintjobs etc, I'd say asking less than AUS$600 would be an insult to the army and your ability.
Yes, you're right about the costing of the models there Ovion, :-) a few pennies were spent, but it was a project I enjoyed and got some good skills out of the process, plus not everyone wants Slaanesh lol! and i've always tried to be fairly reasonable and only ask for what I need even though I know I could hold off and ask a higher price if I really wanted :-) and this way it also gives me a reason to visit and paint all the models I have for my Guard and Flesh Eaters again! and maybe have a game and a battle report!? they've been collecting dust for far too long and I even have a unbuilt StormRaven I want to Damo-ify :-)
^ Lol thanks Whaley :-) I'll throw in all my little interesting bits and pieces if you like too? a clear space means a clear mind for me!
your package should arrive soon too! I am looking forward to you opening it :-) then once I know you've got it i'll get the Slaanesh all organized and safely packaged, I'll be adding so much safety additives to that box it ain't funny! and you're happy with the price?
When you posted that Damo, the first thing I did was calculate the conversion... then check my bank account. Unfortunatly this close to Christmas I have to behave myself. :( Sounds like it's going to a good home though.
Thanks Gits, I think anyone who likes my work and is here a bit would make a great home for them :-) and I dunno, I don't think i can see you being a bad guy army anyway! Whalemusic will nurture them for sure and i think his evil plan was to relieve me of them as a project to give me more time to paint his commissions lol!
nerdfest09 wrote:^ Lol thanks Whaley :-) I'll throw in all my little interesting bits and pieces if you like too? a clear space means a clear mind for me!

That would be great! I've got a small, so far unpainted, CSM force, and bits are always good. For sure happy with it. Putting it down as a steal in my book.
Gitsplitta wrote:Is there anyone who ISNT painting commissions for whalemusic!???
Really sorry to hear about your troubles, pal. I really hope it all works out for you without too much fuss. It's a real shame you're having to sell those beautiful Slaanesh after all that hard work but I'm sure you've got lots more exciting stuff to keep you busy. Take care of yourself and keep your chin up!
Nice score, Whaley - took all of 2 hours! Damo, you're talking about your Flesh Eaters and IG - are you still doing Orks as a side project for our viewing pleasure?
Hey guys! Az, yes, I still have my Orky side project but I've been stern with myself and i'm not to get too involved until next year rolls around :-) that way I can get some neglected models painted and then go all fresh for 2014! I really love the way i can do the skin on them and want to see how i go with some more characterful modeling.
I was actually a bit suprises at the speed in which Whalemusic bought it! and i'm very grateful too! :-) so now for a while you'll be seeing my Flesh Eaters, my Guard army and terrain *insert Orkmoticon thumbsup here...*

Haha, the day is mine! Also, the army.
I'm actually in a similar boat, I just happened to be off that day. Normally, like now, I have to vpn in to my home network from my work pc because Dakka is work blocked.
Don't stress. I would have bought it but I was too late, then Theophony. It seems that Damo has a conga line of people happy to take these things off his hands, so it depends a lot on what "world time" he posts...
Just a little afternoon update today! my Armorcast order finally arrived after nearly 10 weeks! but on the plus side it's really nice stuff and I think it will be totally awesome for it's purpose now on my own Zone Mortalis board build! a couple generators some pipe endings and a bunch of computer consoles should work well with the 'Mules' I bought to make into medi bay beds in an apothicarian?
if you can look at the stuff and think 'hey, that's be great as a ?' or 'that should totally go...?' then let me know and together we shall churn ideas into tangible designs for battle!
I like those computer wall pieces. I keep forgetting about this ZM board until you mention it again, then I get a little excited again. Look forward to seeing it built.
I just don't know how you are going to get the dog to stay put while you integrate it into the ZM board. Seems like a really tricky conversion, good luck.
Hello there! I got a little package!.......(don't go there!)
turns out it was a finecast lord executioner! also turns out I did my little conversion I had planned to make him into my counts as DANTE! I like the way he looks, the head isn't the one I'm using as i'm still deciding which way to go with it? any suggestion? bare or death mask style? i'm hoping to use the Korvydae head at this stage!
anyway guys here he is so far!
next to old faithful Howling Griffon he looks suitably regal! and now he's primed and ready for next time....
and a little more of GFX's Celestial Lions today, a bit more base coating and washing and the next stage in the golds is done!
So, reddish gold armour on Dante? bare head or shall I try and custom a death head mask?
I've never bought finecast, and now its going away I miss the bubbles already
As for the head, how about the old half bionic face one. If he's Dante then that might help to show tough as nails he is, and since he's flesh tearers you could show some rough flesh to cybernetics
Yes yes yes, in the words of Mr T " Bubbles be gone! Fool!" never saw how much they showed until the pics! so don't stress!
and the head is actually from the FW Commander Culln from the Red Scorpions! I find I can happily use GW heads or FW or even the Mad Robot heads even though they're all slightly different in sizing, but my feel is that even us humans have differing bonce sizes and bodies so some differences are fine!
and I re took some pics of the 'counts as' models i have already done a while ago that may have been too long for memory
So, here's my counts as 'Seth' his twin claws count as blood reaver nicely!
and here's my counts as 'Mephiston' a pretty smooth look I might add! I was pretty happy the blending
I'll chuck a link up when i put them in the gallery
Why not just do a half death mask on dante? One side of the face or maybe a masquerade ball eyes-only thing? It'd tie him in whilst also making him stand out.
And it'd give me more awesome hobby material to jack my hammer over. Everyone wins.
Brothers, do not burn your brushes! a burnt brush is the anathema to the Nerd lifestyle! we must keep our brushes MOIST! remember the age old adage, " A dry brush gathers no paint"
and today I kept mine in a constant state of moistness ............. with lots of little projects!
to begin today's collection for the spring collection we have some Terminators from the Emperors chapter of the Celestial Lions, these hardy and regal brothers are clad in the latest of finished Golden armor, their helms a beautiful shade of turquoise blue, lenses in this seasons color of choice which is a complimentary red, soon they shall be detailed and have weapons properly finished to produce a squad which is first amongst the Astartes trend setters...
next out along the gilded catwalk of is a designer who has been quiet for much too long! Orar! after a great start in last season he disappeared thought retired, we were wrong and after much dusting off of his previous designs he has now shown us some nearly completed fashion, this banner is thought to be freehand and made from pure silks each design containing the hair from a departed battle brother, it is being shown to us tonight for the purpose of feedback and direction where should he take the design now? does it look good enough to be finished or is it in need of more light or dark? a good designer only gets better with help and progression so lets help.
The catwalk will now be graced by a nearly completed design in blocked in colour by our favored Sanguinius yes that's right people, it's counts as Dante with some basic colours put down on his armour, I think you'll agree it's direction will be regal and striking when it debuts next season.
now for a subtle difference in the boys from the Flesh eaters! these lads have always been a standard to aspire to when it comes to savage brutality, but they're always top of the pack when it comes to winning battles and proving themselves loyal to the emperor in an Imperium hell bent on tarring them as loose minded barbarians! today they received some weathering in the form of subtle weathering powders on the lower legs which sadly was all but dissolved when sealant was applied so now the head designer needs to re visit the drawing board to work out a fix to that problem. But it the interim some images in technicolor to whet your appetites for what will be a large part of the entirety of the 2014 range.
now for the final fashion for today, yes, terrain, Oh my! this is inspired by a fellow Dakkaite's work here who's name shall be transferred to you as soon as I remember it his work with hot glue and foliage was the spark I needed to produce my own take on the much needed lush vegetation areas of the home world of the Flesh Eaters when they weren't traversing the barren and arid areas of dusty death!

That post is filled with great stuff Nerdy. The Lions look great, the Turquoise helmets are just beautiful. The counts as Dante looks really good with a coat of paint. Shame about the weathering powders on the flesh eaters though.
@giraffex, easy way o get your army to match is to have Nerdy paint them for you , but they are spectacular none the less. Isn't their background that they use a lot of cybernetics? And weren't they beat down by the inquisition? Just wondering if I remember right.
Thanks everyone, the feedback from that fashion show was exceptionally positive!
The Lions are turning out nicely, I did have a bit of trouble getting the turquoise to work for me, as i was painting it was looking a bit below what I wanted, but a fresh coffee and a couple of blue washes it turned out alright with the gold it really smacks out eh! I don't know much about them to be honest so if any (like Theo ) can shed some background i'd be grateful! cybernetics quite popular, if I do any more if GFX wants then I'll incorporate them into the squads and speaking of GFX! glad you approve dude! and you'll have no drama painting the other guys the same if you choose! it's the gold that's the secret, once it's done everything else flows!
Lets see if i can remember the other questions sgtspiff, Seth's head is actually a FW head from the Chaos Lord Zhufor, it fits my armies savage nature and I believe when using him as a chapter master it looks as if he's weathered countless heavy battles with brutal efficiency.
Dante, or whoever we decide to name him does look better with some colour for direction, sadly the scroll work on the top of his jump pack is finecast at it's best and I hope I can actually paint it with such a melted mess of detail (or lack of) and Whaley his axe haft was quite bent originally and I straightened it out when i converted it but it seems to have curved slightly on me now it's assembled i'm not sure how to attack that problem?
Warboss_waazag was indeed the Dakkaite I borrowed the idea from for the terrain! thanks Lenny! I thought it was very resourceful and looked great, my plan is to use the airbrush to give it an alien look with some brighter greens and purples and maybe some veins on the leaves
@Gits, the Orar Termie is for Kitch102 so I felt I had to sign it somehow I think he'll like it although I think I need some advice on how to proceed with the banner? what do you think I should do (apart from paint over it )
@Theo, Lol, just brilliant darling..... literally made me lol there dude! I can imagine you with dark glasses and an oversized boa on!
@Moltar, Thanks dude!
@Yggs, cheers man! I'm moving back into my usual frantic hobbying!
I may try and re do the powders on the Flesh Eaters legs as they really are my favorite guys, the entire army looks so good together and I love painting them, I have so much more waiting for them! a second Baal pred, another dreadnought, a bunch of vehicles.............
In short the Celestial Lions got their asses handed to them by an Ork horde and were only just saved in time by the Black Templars. Its believed that the Inquisition had a hand in the battle taking out all of their apothecaries with sniper fire.
At the end of the battle only 96 Marines were left alive and escaped off the planet in a cruiser lent to them by the Black Templars, they also gifted the new chapter master with terminator armour with Imperial Fists heraldry.
I'm using the Space Wolves codex to represent them to make them a bit more combat orientated.
For finecast (or any resin), even after paint, you should be able to heat with a hair dryer, straighten, and hit with cold water. I've never had anything go back to its former bent ass state with said technique.
You should get us a whole army photo for the FE at this point. Should help us (and you) see where it's headed and any gaps you may have in it.

O.K. Nerdy. Here's what jumps at me. I love the job you've done on the banner. Amazing bit of freehand there. To my eye, the problem is that the colors dominating most of the space are very similar, so everything gets lost in the mish-mosh of off-white, buff and grey. I would recommend making the borders of the banner some bold color in order to make the floral area really be set off as a distinct panel. You could go with red or gold of you wanted something the adhered tightly to the current theme... or something like green in order to set off the existing colors. You can even leave the daggs white, or perhaps pull a pattern down (in the border color) into the two side daggs.
Thanks Gits, I think you're right, i'll have a look and see what colours adhere to the Sons of Orar and use it as a border, and perhaps use the off white to clean up some grey lines I think are a bit thick? & a pattern sounds challenging too! then i'll see what you think then! :-)
Yeah, tightening up the lines is always a good idea. I do it all the time with my camo patterns, ork checks, lenses, chapter insignias and the like. Even my edge highlighting. Can really make a big difference.
Mate, so sorry I haven't been up to date on your blog. Looks like I'm still not getting update messages even though I'm subscribed (grumble).
Anyways, everything looks fantastic. The red on those flesh. Eaters is fantastic and I really like the conversion of The Lord Executioner. The turquoise on the sons of orar is very striking and that....plant....thing you created is very death world!
Full points for even trying a hand painted banner mate, I've never been able to
Thanks guys (& girl) since I've done an extra night this week I probably won't have much or any time for painting :-( yeah i know, big sads eh! but I'll try and get that entire army shot to date of the Flesh Eaters for your perusal :-) any requests on shots?
Automatically Appended Next Post: and i think I may have enough 'spare' models to make this list ;-)
Logan Grimnar
2 Wolf Guard Terminators with thunder hammer and storm shield
2 Wolf Guard Terminators with chainfist and storm shield
1 Wolf Guard Terminators with chainfist, storm shield and a cyclone
(X5)
5 Wolf Guard Terminators:
1 has storm bolter and power weapon
1 has storm bolter and chainfist
1 has storm bolter, powerfist and cyclone
2 have storm bolterand power fist
The counts as Seth is particularly awesome. Also, I feel like there are tons of options to convert a Dante better than the stock model. Dont know why more people dont take a stab at it. You really nailed it with yours. I'd be interested to see it with a death mask.
the list was with SW that I can make from my bag of resin Termie parts! or at least I know I can make about 20 of them! I haven't got the time yet to properly go through the things i have but that little list is probably the most doable for me.
Now, before I get to rambling I got a little package in the post today containing models from Gitsplitta for me to paint for him and as I usually do I started assembling and getting them ready this is as far as I got today when I woke up but should have more done in a week or two!
UK Gamesday Captain with no head and his head and a couple others I found
also primed and washed an Ork Captain Badrukk, and BOY is this guy MASSIVE! he's one solid metal badass!
Gits also kindly gave me a Snikrot (no it's nothing naughty!!)
Now onto some of my stuff I assembled the majority of my Vanguard assault guys waiting on some Chain Axes for weapons for them, good poses though and very suitable for the axes!
and I took some rather poor shots of all my Flesh eaters I hope i don't show you too many of the same stuff!
Spoiler:
all of them
3 drop pods a Landraider & a Baal
10 man ass squad! (don't go there!)
a selection of termies! I have 5 with LC, 5 with THSS, 5 Tac Termies
3 speeders
DC with Jumpacks
5 man dev squad Plasma power
sang guard and friends
If anyone wants closer pics just ask or if anyone want a pic of me and Oscar in the pool today then look below!
Theophony wrote: Damo, what do you use to prime and wash the orks? I just bought a fantasy Orc army for kings of war and would love a few tips.
The dog realized that a bath preceded the other dog getting "squashed", he's got worry all over his face
Those marines are looking like the bad that blood angels should instead of the long haired pretty boys of the emperor.
Thanks Theo, at this stage for my Ork fetish i'm assembling then priming with The Army Painter Primer- Army Green then that pic is with a wash of Agrax Earthshade then I'll blend up from there with Army green paint, bleached bone and a wash of Biel tan green
and i agree, the BA should have a little more 'nasty' to them like the old days! lets hope i can bring some angry back into he boys! I'm currently considering changing my Dante's axe to be a double headed chain axe instead if i can do it?
bedtime for me now had a bit of a bad run today and had to have the night off from work.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Morning dudes! thought you and especially Gits might like to see what I did lately? only very recently received the models to paint for him and have already finished the Games day Captain (well, except for his head) I'll take some proper shots when he's all together, but here he is so far! hope you like him! next shall be Badtrukk and he'll be a challenge and a half! so I'll need all the moral support and advice as I go with him
Mantis Warriors Captain ready to bust some skulls!
Oh and not long until Christmas eh! I wonder if we'll score any model goodies this year from the big guy (Santa, not Kingcracker!) I think I might be getting a couple of interesting things!
What a stunningly beautiful job you've done on him Damo! Color range is excellent and superbly blended. Love the highlighting on the eagle on the hammer... nice touch.
Thank you chaps! I didn't intend on finishing him in that sitting but I kind of got in the flow of it! I do enjoy painting colours I feel confident in doing like that yellow/green armour :-) so it didn't take me too long.
I primed him with Angel green from The Army Painter then used warpstone Glow as my base coat, then it was 60/40 Warpstone Glow & Daemonic yellow followed by 60/40 Yellow & Green then as the yellow is quite translucent I used it to glaze over what i had already done in multiple passes to bring that bright green yellow look to the fore! seems to work! :-)
hopefully I'll do his head this week and have him all done! pale skin and black hair is the fluff right?
I also have been tinkering in the spare 20mins before work tonight, I found a Sang Guard death mask head and was thinking about my Dante conversion, how does this sound? due to the fluff saying they have reportedly been undone by the flaw in their geneseed and it cannot be certain if they are still loyal or not, I thought a creepy gold deathmask with the mouth covered and smoothed in to represent their chapter master stating they are not the flesh eating barbarians other fear? and they are still loyal? or i've cut a skull in half and joined it to the yelling bottom half of another head so it's weird and creepy skull eyes and nose, yelling flesh mouth below in gold once filled and smoothed it shouyld look o.k too? what do you guys think? or should i just wait and get Korvydaes bare head :-)
I'll try and get a wip shot tomorrow night for you Gits, it sort of looks good and sort of looks not quite right :-) but I haven't added any Greenstuff yet it's just 2 bits chopped and glued but you'll be able to at least see what I was trying to achieve!
and I'm pleased you like your Mantis Captain! he was really a cool model and one i've wanted to paint for a long time, I personally don't like having metal mini's so I refrained from purchasing him myself but having the oportunity to give him Mantis life was an honor I thank you for!
Ah Dave, Armorcast and Zone Mortalis is the big project for 2014! :-) I've got lots of planning to do and I need to get a chop it to make a million rivets! you better be along for the ride dude as I'm gonna need your expertise as we go along with it !
Ha! something wrong with me :-) .............. yeah you're probably right dude lol! I don't know why I i'm not a fan of metal i've just never really liked painting the mini's much for myself but don't seem to have an issue painting them for others :-) and you should be careful antagonizing me when I'll be painting Fulgrim for you! he 'may' end up with a Boon of Chaos like Baal'Sak has under his loincloth!!
Great Mantis Warrior damo! Your making Gits proud im sure Youve really got an masterful approach to painting marines! Consisent and gorgeous on every model. Can you believe i havent really painted any ever before? well not since i was 16! Long time ago:( anyways... THIS!!!!
vv Kevin ("Chadlance" )and his 2nd place prize vv
Thanks so much for prize and its a great quality poster!! Wow Plus the hefty shipping price:( Sorry bout that. Please let me know, i can reimburse you for it
Way to go Bebop! :-) glad you got the posters alright! ( should've been 2 in there?) and it's nice to put a face to the Chadlance lol! thanks for the compliments on the marine painting, I just really enjoy painting them :-) although I would struggle to paint Kroot like yours! even though i love how yours look! I also take it you'll be entering again next year in the Nerdcademy awards again? I'm thinking of bringing it forward next year to the first half as I'll be away later in the year.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh and don't worry about postage costs! I wouldn't have started the comp unless I was prepared to foot the prize mailing costs associated with such a prestigious award :-)
Yup there are two, but the a corner of the two was taped so i didnt want to just pull it off, and i was excited to photo it for you Yes definitely doing your comp next year, nothing like a painting comp to put you on your best behavior. I was even thinking of hosting one, though not even sure how many would want to join it, i dont have the pull that you do But my idea was to call it the gaurdsman painting challenge. And the only rule is that everyone must paint the same miniature. The basic snap together guardsman that you can buy for 10$ for 5, and see what everyone comes up with with just a basic guardsman. The only modelling would be allowed for the base. I think it could be a really cool comp, but dont know how to go about it. Any thoughts?
PS...it was crazy sunny, the cold arctic kind, glaring right into my eyes lol
Yep, .............just do it! there are more than enough people who follow you that would make for a wicked comp! and the easy to obtain mini would be welcome too! i'd be in like flynn!
It actually might be easier to do a normal cadian vs the snap together (or a choice). No flgs I've ever been to has had the snap together ones.
Or, if you bought a few packs and sold them for $3-4 a piece (cover model and shipping) it might work? Maybe less so for our Aussie friends, but there are enough they could split a pack as well.

Yeah i was kinda thinking the same thing whale, but reason i thought of the snap together is because its the exact same model, and kind of represents the most basic of sculpts you can get from gw. Its not a bad idea to ship em out either...They arent too rare though...hmmm, you bring up a good point whale..
The snap together SM are more common, they came with black reach and the painting sets, and are still available, though are 3 for $10.
Regardless, they do have 3 different poses in the box, so not exactly the same. Does eliminate the modeling part, but really so would Eldar Dark Reapers, or Fire Dragons, or Dark Eldar Incubi, or Space Marine Tyranic War Vets, etc.
Yeah, i agree whale. My thought was also the SM snap together because they are cheap as well and basic, but after mulling it over i feel the guardsman are bit less ubiquitous. The other models are expensive to purchase and i definitely dont want people to shell out 30+ bucks just to enter. The cadians have virtually no detail bits yet still require some challenges; skin, faces, cloth. Things that might challenge a painter to approach the model differently(?) Dunno but your thoughts are definitely taken to heart as i want the comp (if even i did it) to be enjoyable and easily entered.. EDIT: If availability is the only issue, what about giving a couple weeks or a month notice to allow time to purchase the mini before starting the official comp? just a thought...
Sorry for hijacking your blog nerd
A quick ebay search turned up none of those IG, and only a handful of the AoBR marines. I'd say for sure give a longer than normal comp time (like 6 weeks maybe?) in order to give time for folks time to procure said minis.
Interesting idea for a pure painting comp, not sure what kind of responce it will get though. In the comps I've helped with and been in, there are two distinct groups that concentrate either on the modeling or the painting. You are actively excluding one of those.
If you look at NF's comp, I doubt that you would have dkellyj, Cameirhi, tomcar31, or mad_eddy enter, and J-paint and Melacuvak would likely not have scored as high as you or some of the others that used more "stock" models. Not saying its a bad idea, just one that will draw different folks.
Hmmmm interesting train of thought going on here! while it's great fun hosting a comp it is tricky determining a theme that won't exclude too many and is yet still easily accessable to the masses, I like the idea of having a certain mini we all paint so it can be compared side by side for judging, but sometimes just having a certain theme we adhere to is better to enlarge the scope of those with low, moderate, and high skill sets and it also has the added benefit of getting those to think outside the box with their entry?
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh, and you're not hijacking my thread! this is what it's here for :-)
Dang I see your points...Though in my mind i imagined that it wouldnt turn people away :(, but rather inspire a different approach to a project. (?) Also, and now that i think of it, judging it would be a bit more hardcore since there is less criteria to judge. Not a terribly bad thing, but it would make the comp a bit more edgy i guess. I got the idea from reading about a comp that challenged painters to take any mini but paint it is as though it was a sculpted gem. Pretty cool right?
Also, in my mind i just saw everyone painting their balls off and having tons of awesome models of exactly the same mold to compare each other to...an awesome site to behold to any lover of miniatures!
I would hope that it wouldnt turn people away but instead inspire them.
Getting the model presents a whole new issue though...gotta look into that more..
I for one would enter, I did not enter Damo's competition with any illusions of ability, but to see if I could push myself a bit further. I can't help myself with the modelling, I convert just about everything in some way, so that would be my biggest challenge. I would not expect to get aywhere in such a competition, but would try my best and see how far I can push it, get a bench mark on how good/bad I am. I hope to get better, and the best way is to meet these kind of challenges. I am at the moment painting plain guardsman, admittedly converted and not 100% standard, but just guardsman, to improve my painting skills. Feedback is the key for me. I enter hoping that someone will say, "Wel mate, not bad but ...." Then I know what to work on.
Just my point of view.....
Great work BTW Damo, looking forward to more Ork's from you.
I've always thought it would be cool to see a contest of greyscale or sin city style minis (greyscale with one bold color, usually red). The gem idea is cool too. I think a pure painting competition is more likely to put people in the "well, I'm clearly not as good a painter as bebop, I might as well not even try." mindset. It also doesnt let people add to their own army as easily, so might detract from the draw there as well. I think the idea of using the same model would work wonders for a flgs event better than the internets tbh.
On a slightly related note, another way to get some of the non-elite painters involved would be prizes outside of 1st, 2nd, 3rd. Put all the non winners in a drawing for a "participation" award. Let the participants vote for a "painters favorite", and exclude the top 3 folks, etc. Lets us poor fools feel included.
@ Cam: Comps are very good for that. Judges are expected to be a bit more dickish in judging than you would normally get from a p&m blog (which is usually more about praising your good points).
I think it's a great idea bebop. The more standardized the figure, the better. An old AOBR or other box set marine would work. Something that has no personality of its own. No conversions allowed, plain black base... just you and your paint brush. Give people a couple of weeks to get their models... people on daka are generous. i'm sure there would be marines getting sent all over the place by dakkanaughts with extras.
Heres an idea; and id like to say off the bat, i want to stray away from marines. They are everyones first miniature and more often than not, people paint them all the time. Its not a bad idea for a comp at all. but marines are everywhere. I chose the cadian because it gives the painter alot of options in technique and color schemes. It has the hard surfaces of armor like the marines, but also cloth (Camo ideas), metals, a gun that can be painted a little more dynamically ...i think theres just more room for interpetation...AND chances are, people paint them less. ANNND, they are us!!!
so with that said....
how about this:
1 Cadian Soldier built from the sprue. Must be a basic trooper, not a seargant, no special weapons, must be a lasgun. and must be on a 28mm round base. No extra wargear. No conversions.
prizes supplied by me, and a 4th place most improved or some such kind of contestant voted on, fan favorite. etc etc..
what do you think?
I like it. Totally understandable on the marine, just seemed the easiest cuz everyone has a pile of those things laying around. Maybe allow for those goofy beveled bases too, I know some folks prefer them, and it wouldn't give an advantage.
Skalk's idea is pretty good. Although, standard guardsmen with lasgun and no special weapons or conversions, limits contestants significantly.
If time is available, I would love to get in on this sort of thing as well. Great idea. I like the simplicity of everyone working on the same canvas, so to speak.
I'd be interested to see all the different techniques that one basic build could take on. Not to mention, the huge arrangement of color palettes that extend past the usual military drab (army green & khaki).
I really like the idea of everyone painting the same mini. Whether it's a standardised, "everyone make a guardsman to these specification" mini, or a "just knock out a guardsman with a lasgun", it wouldn't really matter. It's nice to get multiple peoples perspectives of the same subject matter. It may even force a few people to tackle things they're not used to doing. Such as skin. An Eldar, Necron or Marine player can quite easily get away with never showing any skin, where as a guardsmen is all skin.
I would also be hugely up for a greyscale comp like what Whale suggested. Someone best get on that...
