I like skalks idea that they follow my sculpt, however that means then they have to perhaps buy the box which is expensive, to get the correct sculpt. Im thinking just limiting the parts ... and the pose...basically just this
Ok. So thankfully, I'm not crazy, ok maybe a little, and you guys like my idea! SO, I will set this in motion ASAP. A couple things needs to happen first, and that is a rubric for which the comp is judged. Since I will be hosting this and paying for prizes etc etc, I will not enter but I will most certainly judge. I'd like two others with a strong eye for critical judgement to join me here. Can anyone interested in judging pm me please so we can privately discuss a rubric and get the ball rolling In the end I'm open to suggestions but I'm pretty married to certain aspects of my idea so if we're on the same page, definitely pm me I'm excited, I can't wait to see what you guys come up with!
Damn guys! some brilliant ideas for a comp dude! I am torn between entering and offering to judge also, if nobody minds I might borrow the greyscale idea for my next Nerdcademy next year? hit me up if someone else wants to run it themselves but I love the concept
standard Guardsman means that those that do enter will 'really' need to push the envelope to stand out. I think reading between the lines of peoples replies perhaps running it in its own thread where we can post work in progress and bounce ideas to create a learning environment?
and as I would excpect Dave wins the Dakka Karma award for 2013 offering Guardsman! legend!
I also took a couple of shots of my ideas for Dante's head, keep in mind i'm jus' playin' around with ideas!
o.k first up the Deathmask with no mouth, symbolizing his chapters urge to reign in the provocative comments about his chapter eating flesh and turning to chaos.so far it's just scratched smooth but I think if I try and get tricky it'll ruin the design? what about the halo thingy?
and the half skull idea? the other option is reversing it and making it sort of look like the biker half skull mask bandanna? but whatever idea these ideas are going to be Gold with the armour!
nerdfest09 wrote: I think reading between the lines of peoples replies perhaps running it in its own thread where we can post work in progress and bounce ideas to create a learning environment?
READ: Get off my blog now and start your own HEhehehe. Got it. It will be done. And actually, i was kinda hoping youd enter, but i also could use your eyes as a judge. Either way its a win, but, yeah, i think id love to see you enter. And yes, upping the game is the point id say
As for the heads, im a little behind on whats on your docket but id say, the 2nd head appeals to me more.
Oh, Oh we're a comedian now are we Gits no in fact the block on his head is because i'm a cheapskate who bought resin skulls for a very low price and as such has to clip off small blocks of encumbering resin! he will not, I reapeat NOT be twirling plates!............. I'll save that for Lemartes
and as far as the heads go, I like the second one as it's a lot different than you normally see, and hopefully when I'm done even if it won't look big enough to be a helmet it could pass as a techno faceplate? I like the fluff behind the mouthless mask head bit feel it might not stand out enough as I want it too? it has to be a focal point on a model like this and it might blend too much?
and Bebop! dude don't be daft! I was most certainly NOT implying I wanted you guys to take the talk elswhere in fact it warms the cockles of my heart when others apart from myself banter and chat in here!
They do. If you get a bunch of folks to sign up, contact legoburner and he may put the comp on the front page a week.
If you want to generate interest and participation, try contacting people directly. I did exactly that for the junk pile contest and the participation right now is almost 60 people. I admit to feeling a bit weird about it at first but there were some specific people I wanted to at least tell about it, and the majority of replies were thankful that they were told as otherwise they would have missed out on it. I'm sure you know a bunch of people (like me) that would be all over this.
Skull heads looks a bit... well, the skull is too small to be a helmet, which makes it a part of his head, which isn't goping to do a lot of positive for those chaos-rumours...
Guardsmen contest sounds interesting. What kind of timeframe would it have, and are multiple entries an option in case people want to experiment with a few different schemes?
Lol looks like in my attempt to make a cool helmet I have inadvertently created what appears to be an evil and rather nasty looking C3PO!
although the other option doesn't look too bad I like it but it looks a little boring? I think I may go with the bare head option when I get Korvydae still, what do you guys think?
and while looking for some bits I realized I had these, a bunch of tyranid scything arms and those funny looking spore arm thingies? as well as a big ass spider, I was going to use these parts to make some Slaanesh nasties but never got there does anyone you know need them? I don't need them but they may be useful for someone's project?
I don't actually need these. I don't have nids so a whole butt load of limbs is no good. And while a giant spider is always good to have I don't know what I'd use it for.
Why don't you throw them all together and make something horrific out of it, then put it up on feebay or something. Oooooooooor keep it and use it as next years Nerdcadamy 1st place reward?
Original plan was to make Spawn from them or make a Maulerfiend with them as legs along the body, the spider I got for the same reason but it was waaaay to big, I could have made some massive brood mother though ;-)
Now, I know this is kind of going against the grain here but I picked up a bargain on ebay today! a grey Knights Codex for less than a 20! and seeing as I have a bunch of terminator parts does anyone know a ridiculously small, ridiculously hard hitting force i could potentially build? I'd like to model Mordrak? a skull headed grey knight and friends could look cool stalking through my ZM board next year :-)
Hmm... I could potentially use some for my Tyranid project. I have a 500pt or 600pt force put together from the previous codex (painted and ev'rything). I've been putting off updating and increasing them them for the current codex since the rumours are that there's a new codex around the corner.
Also, I've been painting Ogres. I really should photograph the Nids and put them up.
whalemusic360 wrote: The first mask looks like he was in a horrible accident, the second looks ok, but the no mouth looks strange. Maybe try a normal deathmask?
Lol this post cracks me up. But yeah I think both heads look a tad odd...I like the fluff behind the no mouth though..
You could give the first head some hair and paint it like a normal head, except for the face which you can keep just like a mask. That then explains it's smaller size.
whalemusic360 wrote:Dragowing is still better than ghost knights, and you can run an 1850 list with like 21 models.
Go on........... i'm listening can we do a 1500 point list?
Camkierhi wrote:If no one wants them I would be willing, International postage mind you. But I will buy them off you.
On the masks I personally like the second one there. First one just doesn't rock my boat, don't know what it is.
If Az doesn't want them then i'll swing them your way Cam and honestly as far as the masks go, I don't like either of them I'll stick to what i know and do a bare head on him
and if anyone's even slightly interested i'm currently sitting in my underwear at a cheap hotel after driving 3 hours for nerdwench to go to a staff meeting but I did bring some models to assemble and some other things to keep me amused for 8 hours
You can break it up into 3 squads, but you loose the Banner and a body. I can give you that list as well if you'd like. Its a bit more versatile, but less deathstar gunna kill ya.
I was hoping something with multiple dread knights so I could use the 15mm leviathan from dreamforge, maybe draigo, but power armored guys is cool too. But since I don't really play it's not a huge deal. Thanks for sharing.
Sorry for he delay, I was at work. The mini leviathan is 4 3/4" tall without the smoke stacks, here's a side by side for height comparison.
Not sure what h height of a Dreadknight is, if you know can you tell me?
And just for fun size reference the mini next to the maxi an a mortis
Well, I had fun with my underwear ON! got some building and conversioning done! and then found out Nerdwench won employee of the year from the whole state! so proud of her hard work! and now we have a trophy that can go next to my golden Terminator I won in Gits comp! Oh the bookcase is filling
So what exactly did I do? I built another Baal Predator this time with a lot of Dakka! and then added my Flesh Eaters vehicle signature of bones melded into the front bits and added the same to my other 2 built Rhino's which have been languishing on a dusty shelf
Got nearly (Oh so nearly) finished some bare heads today! finished Gits Captains head which you'll see further down, but the other two I got pretty close to done the Executioner head I am a little pissed at as I never noticed until I started painting that the very point of his nose is finecast gone! so I haven't really taken much care with that one. The other head is a FW one and I like the way it's turning out so far, i'm thinking it'll suit my sternguard somewhere!
Executioner who apparently has snorted too many drugs! and the other one coming along nice like!
Now, before i forget, while i was wandering the mean streets of Hobart town last night (with pants on I may add!) I stumbled across a hobby store and went in like my life depended on it hoping to score a bargain. And I found a box with books in it! a whole bunch of marked down White Dwarves and Warhammer Monthly! which is awesome as I have seen them advertised in magazines and online but I've never ever got my hands on one before and now i had the chance to buy some back issues cheap so $25 later I had some reading material! (I think that was a good price )
and now for a model I'm really happy with! the mantis Captain for Gits! he just looks bad ass! his face turned out well and suits the green with the pale skin! I hope you guys like him
So, now I've done that stuff I can hopefully get onto the Ork Characters next week!
Wow that captain looks so freaking great man. So bright o_O. Just the way i like it!!! Gits has got quite the collection going. In fact, so much so, that yours and his models makes me want to start a mantis warriors army >_<
And nothing beats those older white dwarfs. Especially the 2002 era, when most of the content was user generated. The magazine is absolute crap now. Poorly designed, ugly photos, and is essentially a huge catalog every month for 10$. No fluff, no strategy....gah...i could go on and on. For shame:(.
The Mantis is looking damn good! And congrats to Kirsty as well. Of course, since we don;'t know what she does, it brings this little quote to mind:
Nice haul of WD and WHM for $25 bucks as well. Looks like you're going to be reeeeeeallly busy reading old issues of White Dwarf for some time now!
The heads are looking good. I particularly like the one with the bionic eye as the purpled flesh around the implant looks like a "realistic" discolouration and bruising around the area. What is that particular head from, by the way? Forge world Rhino marine looks good, well, except for his head - I'm just not a fan of that noggin, but perhaps your paint can change my mind? I do like what you've done with the decorations on the tanks? Where did you get the skeletons/bone parts? PM me if discretion is needed.
Looks like you might need some terminator CC weapons. Good thing they're available from the bits merchants at least, so I'll be looking forward to your take on them. Will you be painting them as Grey Knights, or as something else and just using their list? I can definitely use those arms, when I made my 500-pt 'nid list years ago, I went for entirely close combat weapons with no ranged at all - which was rather challenging. I ended up putting the actual Warrior models aside and using some Alien 3 models instead on oversized (60mm) bases. When I return to them to 6th edition-them up, I'll definitely be trying to keep them interesting, though I'll get some pics up of them in the next week or two. Not that exciting, though - just an aliens-inspired force, dipped and desert-based.
Cheers guys, and yes i have been reading a few choice older magazines I'd never seen the WHM ones before and was really happy they were a comic so many nice illustrations.
I am really happy with the Mantis Captain and I hope Gits likes him just as much when he gets him! I haven't painted eyeballs on him as it's just not my thang! but I've shaded the sockets and under the eyebrows so it looks like deep shadows like I usually do
Az, Nerdwench is the manager of a Gym that is quickly getting a great rep and good customer base, it's growing rapidly and she is destined for bigger roles within the company! yay for her!
The skeleton parts are from the Wargames Factory Skeleton box set, I just cut them up and filed them down to fit a bit flatter the head is the Iron Hands MKIII one and I do agree about the tank pilot head too, it's not my favorite but it's different to others and i wanted to try and Damo-ify it
The GK's I will do as GK's but with a little flair they'll still be silver but with a gold blend on parts of the armour and the tabards and details will be greens instead of reds, should look good together I hope? and do you want all the nid bits and the spider? anything you don't need I'll send to Cam for his kitbashing needs so you have first dibs if you want it all and he gets the dregs! Bwahahahahahah! *ahem*
please pop your pics up here if you like!? i'd love to see more of your rather eclectic and large collections!
Sounds like the Nerdwench is truly exceptional... never doubted it for a minute! Congrats to her, I'm sure she really worked hard for her accolades.
I didn't comment earlier but I really like the conversion your working on for the rhino hulls. The GS'd bones are very clever and give a nasty, gruesome tone to those vehicles.
Calling those who want to see W.I.P? I woke this morning (good start to the day!) and had a plethora of different medications thought about having some toast for breakfast then decided I couldn't be bothered; so I had a Gweneth Paltrow and made my way to the Nerd Lair. pressing the books in the right order to enable the case to swing inwards lit by torches held aloft in iron sconces I followed the winding stair seeing creatures of the night in the flickering torch light following me dancing across the walls! after what seemed an age I emerged into the Lair and took down my brush from the wall held with it's partner behind a comical skull.... and got painting.
these two models again amazed me at how much character they have! only thing I didn't like was the tiny little metal tags I don't see until I start painting quite a few which i fixed as best I could and continued on my way with the skin and blocking in colours, first one I'll show you is Gitsplitta's Captain Badrukk what a beast and really cool details like the chest of teef and teef as decoration on the collar of his Pirate coat! I did his skin the same as before except I didn't wash it with green, just Agrax and I need to also correct information i gave Theo a few days ago! I actually use CAMO GREEN for the skin and not The Army Painter one I said! sorry about that that aside I hope he's coming along nicely!
Captain Badrukk!:
The other model was Snikrot so so cool! I again followed the same recipe for his skin although as he's got more bare Ork flesh and is a Commando I imagined he either would be skulking through bushes and tight spaces or spending time hiding in a warzone for a time so I gave his shoulders and back some pinkish tinge as if he's either slightly sun burned or been wedged somewhere tight (a tank would be tight for this monster too!) next up will be more details like the face plate, not sure whether to go with lenses? or gently glowing from the inside? and colours? the other thing you may not notice is Mork's Teeth? I have done them black so they don't glint when he's sneakin' but I used Vallejo's Metallic Black paint Oh hell it's nice guys, perfect for Templars etc when I learn how to use it and highlight more again hope you like him too! I decided to delete his big ass backpack about half way through so my apologies if it's a bit rough.
Boss Snikrot:
Should have them both finished tomorrow and a couple other works in progress for my FleshEaters!
Nerdy, you are moving up to the next tier of awesome with these. Love the palette, the skin/faces look amazing, making the tabard a map - outstanding! Also love the slight purple tinge to the nails.
As for the faceplate- I think a green or blue glow would look awesome...but I think Gits often paints lenses? Do you need it to fit with his boyz?
That momma do must be really good at his job to sneak up on people wearing lowing pants the clothes are awesome , it really is the suite that makes the man.....errrrrr Ork.
Thanks everyone for the compliments on the Orkses and to my lady :-) very appreciated by both of us! I'm not here for long as I've got to finish or try to finish the Orks! so updates later today! it's hard to reign in my urge to paint him like a pimp instead of a pirate!
Gits yeah I can see the line, I tried to scrape it down without too much damage after I took the backpack off partway through *facepalm* but I'm thinking of turning it into a raised scar for practice! :-) and he's only for me to play with so no huge problem as no one will see him after I stop taking photos lol! :-)
These are both excellent - you're getting the "realistic"-style green Orc flesh going here really well. I particularly like the subtle touches on Badrukk - like the blends on the feather and the pirate map loincloth. Snikrot is also looking great, and the sunburn is a great looking effect you don't really see on Orks - or really many figures at all - regardless of race!
A very good metal worker and friend once told me that a measure of one's ability as an artist isn't that you always do things perfectly, it's that you can make an error into something that looks like it was put there on purpose.
Gitsplitta wrote: A very good metal worker and friend once told me that a measure of one's ability as an artist isn't that you always do things perfectly, it's that you can make an error into something that looks like it was put there on purpose.
Like the President , sorry, no more politics jokes, I just could not resist.
Azazelx wrote: Snikrot is also looking great, and the sunburn is a great looking effect you don't really see on Orks - or really many figures at all - regardless of race!
Damo might be ignoring that (awful) part of the Warhammer fluff? (I know I do!) I prefer the more Tolkienesque origins of the earlier RT days over the "dey iz mushrooms, for reelz!" that came later.. Besides, we can certainly toast mushrooms, capsicum and tomatoes on the BBQ - though they tend to blacken instead, I admit. His Orcs also have red/pink lips, which suggests a "red" cardiovascular system - and GW has used red blood more often than green for their goblinoids over the years.
Yes over the years GW have had Orks with green blood and then red and then green and then red etc. etc. I like to use artistic license as I did when i added an appendage to my daemon prince! as long as it looks cool i'm down for it!
Now back to the Orks! I got them done! and they look cool only bad thing was as i was putting the final touches onto Snikrot I bloody dropped him on the table from which he then commando rolled off the edge and onto the floor! sneaky bastard! so he may be a little damaged! after I stuck him back together.
but enough of the horror..... The HORROR! *ahem*
Captain Badrukk, the pirate of Michigan... or something like that only thing left to paint is his boss pole which i'll work on later.
and a little nod to our states Rainbow Lorikeet feather Previous owner of the iron chest of Teef, I wonder what it stands for!?
This is his back with the weathering like Keith Robertson does, i thought i'd try it Gotta dig up the Chest with something right?
ARRRRRRRRRRR!
Next up is Snikrot! who as i mentioned tried to escape earlier today by being a sneaky Git! again I think he turned out nicely too! just a simple colour scheme not too busy works well I hope. and I like the little added touch in reference to Universal soldier of the necklace made from ears lol!
Oooh nasty cut there buddy!
Now my plan tomorrow was to work on another project for my Fleshies bug due to Helga breaking down and stranding Nerdwench at work tonight I have to run around and see if i can get her fixed although my sneaking suspicion is the battery which i hope it is as it's only a couple hundred instead of the other option which was starter motor which to replace due to it's location is over a G fingers crossed so i can get back to work on these beauties!
Great work NF. I really like the more natural animal skin tones you have going on them. The sunburn is also a brilliant idea.
And all very nicely painted.
Yea, man. Wow. Quite possibly my favorite ork skintones around. Normally im a lime green, ork kinda guy but you just won me over big time. This is the best mini you have painted in my eyes. Great stuff bro.
nerdfest09 wrote: he's only for me to play with so no huge problem as no one will see him after I stop taking photos lol! :-)
QFT, but in your case I don't think it matters. You've taken a mold line and made it look like it was on purpose. I've never seen anyone do that. I sincerely agree with Gitz- paint more Orks. Badrukk is so awesome that you make me want to play Orks again.
Wow, thanks everyone! I'm totally blushing again I'm so happy they look good enough for those lovely words! you know when you say you don't really enjoy doing something or are nervous about something? then when you do it you almost feel stupid because you start a stupid grin and wish you had of painted them earlier! I got more to paint so this isn't the end of the Ork love bro's!
whalemusic360 wrote:Some good looking orks right there. Not bad for metal models that are the worst thing ever made
Bah! alright they're not as bad as I thought o.k!
Dr H wrote:Great work NF. I really like the more natural animal skin tones you have going on them. The sunburn is also a brilliant idea.

Thanks Dr Hinternet! I like to have the chance to try different things and sometimes, like this I like the results I may have to use the sunburn again one day?
Gitsplitta wrote:Nerdy... you clearly have wasted far too much of you life painting things that aren't orks.
From now on... anything I don't need is getting sent to you in the hopes you'll make them a permanent part of your gaming life.
Thanks Gits, you're actually the one person I was sweating on liking them! because, well,.....they're for you! and do you seriously think I do the Greenskins justice? I was always scared of them but not now and i've started assembly and priming of the Runt herd & herd!

What! I won you over!? well then, my work here is done! now I want to see you do some like your Kroot conversions! Savage Orks anyone by Bebop?

Thanks Skalk, I am happy with the way the scar turned out, it all started as I removed his backpack half way through starting him and as the paint is well known for flaking off metal mini's I didn't want to start the process by scraping it, so, i merely changed it
GiraffeX wrote:Love the Orks NF09 I really love the way you do the skin tones, makes them feel that extra bit more real.
That's what I was going for with the skin tone, I didn't want them to be too unrealistic (as far as Orks go!) and I don't think I could be happy with the bright greens some do.
whalemusic360 wrote:To bad we can''t vote on them.....

Stop painting orksess now get back to your monotone marines.
Just amazing dude, just amazing. Inspirational.
Well Cam I'll just have to pack up a bunch of brushes and models and send them to you to start again! and when you open the box there will be a big SLAP from me that'll jump out on a spring and get you right in the face! if you want a little tute down the track I can do that for you? and don't worry I've got plenty of monotone Marines to come!
Careful painting those Grots Damo..... they will turn your brain to sludge and you'll end up hooked on the little buggers. Grots are my favorite things to build and paint, they are just too fun and challenging as well
You do a fantastic job on the orks Damo! They are stunning. The subtlty you've worked into the skin tones, the bold colors mixed in... just beautiful. Remember, Snickrot is yours to keep. The beginning of your own ork horde! Hopefully he'll be de-nerfed in the new dex.
The Orks are looking even better with the details done. The blacked out blades on Snikrot are a interesting touch. I wouldn't have thought of doing that for any of my models.
just did a little work on the Techmarine and Telion today nothing crazy just as much red armour I could get done! and primed and washed some more Orks!
and some Orks.
That should keep me entertained next paint day eh!
Mate, those orcs look amazing. As so many have said the skin tones are awesome. Love what you did with the mold line - very clever!
The metallic black on bathe blades has worked out really well(sadly, combat company are now sold out - maybe you started something?). The metallics elsewhere look great too as does the lens on the pirate ork.
Frankly, you make me regret choosing tau as a secondary army to paint...the orcs look so much fun!
The tech marine is coming along very nicely man, will have to get you to share your secrets for painting red one day.
Well here's my junk for Skalks contest! I like to have a story attatched and I imagined Brother Skalkus the Howling Griffon lobbing a grenade into a mobile generator then walking through the rubble while it burnt!
hope you like it, he should pop it in his voting thread when he gets the pics again (he lost them!)
excellent Junk Pile! I love the OSL on the generator bulb tips. That is a technique I need to learn, now that I have a bunch of rust/corrosion practice under my belt...
Cheers guys, I'd have to hunt around for the bits shot but it's just cardboard tube, a wire, a couple of resin doo-dads a bit of scrap plasticard or two and some of the little power thingies off the Battle for Macragge terrain set as well as some random metal doohicky's and I think watch bits? I'm not too sure at this stage! :-) and hopefully it will make it's way onto the ZM board when that gets the green light!
Badrukk looks great but your pics are just fuzzy enough to lose detail. WE all know how awesome they are but other people just surfing the gallery will see a slightly fuzzy pic and it takes away from the amazing work you did.
I need some advice I got a package today from Angry Badger and it's my floor tiles but i've encountered a small issue, the tiles were specced at 5cm square but I didn't realize they were talking about the actual etched tile part so it's a bit bigger than what i needed to fit snuggly on my tiles to put the walls so they match up in differing configurations
The tiles themselves are really good, nice and thin and cut perfectly, not to mention they look exactly as i wanted so I really want to make this work, especially as i got 300 individual tiles to use
first some pics.
and this is the overhang I need to remedy, should I turn it over and get some kind of saw to trim the excess off the edges? if I can do that easily what sort of saw do i need to buy? i'm heading into town tomorrow so I can grab something then! I can't leave it as it is because when I finish it won't slot into my gaming table neatly.
i'm just so close to having it all organized and ready to start! I want to get it fixed and get into it!
I've got to say - those Greenskins are just the nuts - I'm in awe of your style - simply perfection... as for everything else, truly amazing, just pales into insignificance next to the Orks (in my opinion at least)
Awww shucks! Ruglud thanks man! I have to say my current Ork dalliance is suprising me too, I never attempted them before due to the mass of them i'd have to paint and I didn't think i could do a good job on them for so many! but I really enjoy painting them and still have a couple up my sleeve for the blog (although I have to say my Flesh Eaters are by far MY favorites )
Now speaking of Orks, I finished the Runtherder
I did notice 2 small things I need to fix, nothing major just a strap or 2 which will be done by the time you read this but I still hope you guys like him so far! next shall be his ten little helpers who are all going to be treated as mini characters!
I think there are two reasons you're so good with the orks Nerdy.
1) Your ability to paint skin and faces is top notch, and the orks expose far more skin than any other model range aside from say, chaos demons.
2) You paint with humor... which the orks are loaded with.
Hey NF, if you haven't gone to town yet, consider one of these:
You won't be able to cut the entire lot at once but if you score a line on the wood and put it into the box as they fit you'll get a perfectly straight cut every time. I used to have one and it finally had to go after years of use. You just reminded me that I really want a new one.
Gentlemen again I thank you :-) glad the Runtherder has the approval of you all! even if his pants are too clean! :-) all i can say to that is- Deal with it!- Lol Orks i paint are obviously affected with some Orkish OCD sydrome!
Gits, I hope you like the way I do them? it does seem you do! and you're right about the humor, I love things with a certain theme or style I can use and the Orks have a lot of skin which I feel confidant doing as well as the cheeky little additions and quirks they all have, I think that's why i want to do a BloodAxe themed force, completely silly and not competitive but I can sink my teeth into a feeling amongst all of them!
Skalk, I did indeed go into town and I bought a fine toothed tenon saw like the one you pictured! :-) if i glue all the little tiles on the big tile and then flip it over, the edge of the foam tile is a perfect cutting guide for the saw! i've done one so far so I'll show you later.
Snrubby! I'll be sending some sneaky clean Bloodaxes your way! then if you see them before they gut you, you can feel free to tell them they're too clean lol! :-)
Damian I don't think there is a thing your brush touches that doesn't come out looking great! I think you're seeing part of why I love the orks so much. They have so much character to them and they take paint incredibly well to boot.
The new Orks are looking great. Really liking those skin tones, and actually making me wonder whether to keep mine consistent with what I've been doing for the past 20+ years or to change them up when I start painting new Orks. (as opposed to finishing the half-painted ones).
The techmarine and scout are also coming along typically well, and I love the junk pile, particularly the overheated and molten aspect of it.
Your orks look great Damo !
I love them. Especially Baddruk. I only don't like the brown base rim.
But the skin, the metallics, the fabrics, the feather, they all look damn good ! Good job.
Thanks guys! I have a habit now of basing all my mini's in brown so I can't blame Gits for that lol! it just suits my FleshEaters is all and Az, why don't you mix it up a bit with your Orks? different Fungal strains i'm sure would have darker or lighter tones? and I know how much you love the fluff behind them being fungal spores so just for good measure I'll use the term Fungal spore in the sentance one more time!
Now may i also ask for some feedback?
I was going back through my BA Codex for some inspiration and re read Seth's entry, I felt I should give my counts as, something more akin to 'Bloodreaver' I have two options I can convert but I want your opinions please, either one will be changed to have a Chainaxe head on them as well.
so, option one is the staff and arms from the new Libby plastic kit. converted into a ChainAxe of course! (when my axe's arrive that is)
and option number 2 is the double handed hammer from the DC kit?
so whichever I go with I'll re paint and get them to look like they belong
also while fiddling with this little conversion it left me with a Libby with no arms but thanks to my DCM Secret Santa I had a spare Librarian lying around saying "rip my arm off!" so I dummied this up for one of his arms and am now stuck, what arm/weapon do I give his other side? any suggestions and model parts I can use will be muchly appreciated!
and just to further whet your appetites, I have been playing around with my Zone Mortalis I will have a sizeable update for you end of the week on it all I can say is, I'm excited and hopefully it will be stupidly cool when i'm finished, and with your help and ideas on how to proceed with style and design it will no doubt be as individual and cinematic as can be!
Yeah the hammer arms were my first pick too after seeing them on him but the other ones were just a bit more different :-) i'll see how many more pick which ones and then see which way i bend! if I use the hammer arms I can then use the force staff to convert back to being useful on the Libby too? hmmmmmm
Mmm, mmm a Chainglaive i can feel :-) I may have to do that if my Axe heads don't turn up, I suppose that way i can make it as big or brutal as I need too!
(also still waiting on Fulgrim, hopefully this week he'll arrive!)
As a red blooded male and a proud collector of man dollies i have to vote for the chain glaive. But why not take it a step further? Get two chainsword place them back to back and have a two way chain glaive..
Alternatively, if you can't be arsed make one, Anvil Industries makes some nice looking chain glaives.
As for the libby, i,have an idea. A crazy idea, but one that would look sweet as if executed right. Ok in the top pic the way the arm is positioned it looks like the lib has just passed his weapon off to someone else. What if you modelled up a traitor guardsman/eldar/ork/etc to be kneeling in front of him with the libs left arm on his shoulder holding him down. With the angle of the libs head and the death stare that particular head is rocking it would look like the lib is about to conduct a psychic interrogation on the unfortunate he is holding down. Then you just need a cherub or something to be dragging his staff away and the model is complete.
It'd take some doing but it'd look smegging awesome if done properly.

You know Snrub that's a cool idea! but how about I take it EVEN FURTHER! and do my first try at magnetizing that arm? then I can convert an arm to be holding down a traitor and giving the death stare of doom and also have one with his staff in it as if he's thrusting it into the ground 'you shall not pass' style?

Go even deeper. Magnetize the dude he is doing the death stare/grip/whatever so you can switch it to whatever army you are playing.
GrimDork wrote: Daww.... Now you've got me wanting to craft an entire board out of neodymium magnets and line the underside of my skimmers with them =/
That'd be increadibly overpriced.
Make an electromagnet, and have either magnets or electro magnets in your skimmer.
Bonus points if you make it detect when the magnet in the skimmer is over it, so you can move it across and it'll sit whereever you put it. (I've seen a small scale of this, where a Razorwing actually flies over a 4x4 tile!)
Hollow out both models. Put a firecracker in each one. When you pass a psychic test and kill something you can blow the victim up. If the libby suffers a peril of the warp you can blow him up.
Magnetize the Librarian to have a regular back pack, or a jump pack. But to be even better, magnetize the regular pack to put wings on it for when he uses the flight psychic power

While you're at it hollow out some predator turrets and put roman candles into them so they shoot fireballs at the enemy.

Best... suggestion... ever!
Lol Whoa! that was some intense magnet conversation and no one even mentioned the insane clown posse! congrats! you wanna know the good thing? I have if i'm correct (and thanks for reminding me!) in my shed hidden a metal box full of rather good custom fireworks! and you know what that means don't you? yes..... i'm gonna blow gak up! I think a cracker (except for Kingcracker he won't fit!) will fit nicely in a terminator if I can set my camera for rapid speed we could have a cool poster of moment of explosion! I better paint a rather shocked face......
but on the libby, I think just a magnet arm will suffice
Hang on you crazy sumbeach... you ain't actually going to blow up a terminator are you? Those things are expensive!
Like 15 dollarydoos a pop expensive.
That does remind me though. I had a big cracker kicking about the place. Called a turban bomb. It was painted up to look like Bin Laden. Wonder where that went...
Snrub why aren't you asleep waiting for Santa? :-) how about once i get a little video camera to produce some painting vids I also have some fireworks fun too? anyone know of a good cheap little camera with a good zoom? then I'll paint and blow gak up !
Not blown up any 40k stuff, but back in the day used to fill various plane and tank kits with gunpowder and film them on my old 8mm, looked great when I remembered to set it to high-speed, not so great when I didn't
The problem as i see it would be getting the miniature to stay hovering and not 'slide' off the base due to the magnets push/pull? but I think it could be done as a single experiment but a whole army could be bothersome :-)
I might see how i go with magnetizing the ONE ARM on my libby, I know baby steps! but if it doesn't seem too hard I'll have a crack at working something out for a hovering assault marine!
.... and then I'll blow gak up! :-)
now, while I have you here again :-) and yes i'm fluttering my eyes at you for some ideas //////// ///////// (that's me fluttering) I have my floors and walls for my ZM boards, but I need to find a suitable thematic style for the additions and painting? are we going to be in a dirty space hulk? or a clean space ship? or a imperial building? or a underground research facility? and how are we going to add interest to all the boards for each them? I want to include an apothecarion and or a cargo area with crates and ammo etc. but I don't know how dirty/realistic I should do it? i'm thinking fairly clean as is my style but what sort of detritus would be good?....
...sorry started to ramble, i'll let you take it from here.....
If you want to make something levitate like that you really want to use a diamagnetic material. When cooled down (usually with liquid nitrogen) the material repels magnetic fields. Place it above a magnet and it will hover above it. Or vice versa obviously. The problem with using two magnets to do this is that the hovering one will flip over and stick to the ground one (thereby damaging your model). Here endeth the lesson.

The other important part, from what I remember, is having a set (3-4+) magnets, in an array so that the create a 'sweet spot' in the middle for the target to be held in place where the fields converge.
Or something like that.
I'm incredibly tired and my main knowledge of magnets is being dredged up from some 10 years ago.
Well lets rest the magnets for now then so you can rest ;-) how about we focus on the board for a bit instead? how's that? ...better?...good, lets begin.
DrH, that's a good example dude, not too broken and shattered but still with grime and could represent a ship being in constant state of maintenance? i'm thinking ship now instead of building, but really it could be both couldn't it! I like the idea of the spent casings on the floor too, might have to have a room with a heavy fire fight taken place :-)
I'd like to see the inside of the flesh tearers vessel. It can be clean and nice looking, and a good place for your opponents to be trying to board.
It could also be used with guard models. A chaos vehicle almost demands a chaos army be present.
Theophony wrote: I'd like to see the inside of the flesh tearers vessel. It can be clean and nice looking, and a good place for your opponents to be trying to board.
Thats a really good idea Theo would give Damo a real good reason to go all out on this baby.

YESYESYESYES! the vessel will be my Flesh Eaters ship!! OMG! thanks heaps guys! now I have FOCUS!
and a bunch more questions! it shall be well maintained as it should being a vessel of the Emperors finest and I'm thinking I need some banners on random walls over the place? perhaps victory trophies of bones/skulls etc on display somehwere? what sort of rooms do they have on a ship good for detailing etc? how about a captains command deck? computer consoles and servitors, a pulpit and other stuffs? Oooh a reclusiam! need pews now......
and pictures for inspiration? pleasePLEASE post them in here for me to peruse! I'm not up with many images I can think of but any and all if you guys know where they are then chuck 'em here and lets get our bulging Nerd brains together! I'll have pics soon, on Friday I can get a fair update up, not much paint wise but certainly enough for us to get brainstorming!
Marine arming chamber. You can cut up some marines and put the armor bits on a stand. Have servitors to attend them. A sleeping cot and a table with a regicide board .
Definitely an apothecarion. A few slabs for surgeries, a holding room for harvested gene seed and organs. A stock room for bionics for post battle attachings. A place to toss the dead.
Armory with servitors bound to their desks/workstations. Tech priest overseer. Maybe a side door that leads to the motor pool.
The tea room with billiard tables, scones and crumpets
Thanks Bama & snrub & Theo :-) I didn't get in on that KS either, I don't really follow them much and will just have to wait it out and see what gets produced by some of them!
I'm thinking yes to a command deck, and an apothecarion! I have 3 of the 'mules' that I saw on Theos thread that are just perfect for operating tables! and combined with my clear specimen tanks i did a while ago (if you remember?) should be a good start to that room.
Command deck, wow, that's gonna be epic :-) I have a rogue psyker model I will cut up and place into a sunken 'pit' with cables and wires out the wazoo! he can be my navigator? and I have some sheets of very very thin wood veneer I can literally cut to fit in areas and varnish for a real wood finish! Ooooh nice :-) of course they should be held in place by rivets! computer consoles I got from Armorcast and the clear acetate ones I have already can be used somewhere too.
would you guys mind if I take pics and show you all the different bits I've got to use for the project on Fri? then if you see what i have already you may be able to come up with some good placement for them in conjuction to the tiles I will make? I want to spread the details out but I also don't want it to be too sparse :-0
Mess hall with muffins?...... so gonna do that,...... may have to buy a Command Rhino from FW for the sitting marines ;-)
Can I use rule of cool and still ad a dude all wired up for looks? :-) we can make up a job description later? maybe he can just be a navigator servitor or some such?
snrub, those things look wicked and very much what I have already in mind! we're definitely on the same track here!

and i shall indeed photograph my bits for you!
I just finished reading Betrayer, it has a female bridge woman who is only the torso up human and has wires holding her up to the roof attached to her head. Her lower half is connected directly to her station on the bridge. That would be an excellent conversion bit of work.
Awesome pics dude thanks so much! I love the engine room one, I think I may do a cross over of an engine room and storage area? then I can keep my tiles down to a bare 16 of them half engine, half ammo crates and mechanical equipment!
the medibay is nicely done, I can certainly pick aspects from nearly all these images to incorporate along the tiles! the coridoor has some good points too, i like the cylinders on the walls, that's a good idea to add detail to areas of dead space?
the bridge, the one thing that jumped out at me was the metal bars that appear to go from ceiling to floor? a good idea to add something onto without cluttering the fighting spaces
my mind is churning so much right now I'm nearly making butter!

Ho Ho Ho yes they are some serious cool pics! :-) when the lights go out...... Eeek!
I like the ZM shots! I might rough up a few parts on the flooring to get some rusty effect down after seeing that! and the screen shots from I think it's Alien? pipes for the win :-)
I also just went and spent a few dollars buying the Crowmanyians from Anvil to convert as Techpriests and servitors! I want to have a sense of place in the board and having menials around should do it! just need to find some mechanical claw bits!? (also got a tox trooper squad to turn into my Necromunda gang!)
Do it, live through me GFX! :-) I am your cocoon of nerdness!
Gits, don't worry dude! lol, I'm merely propagating ideas for the start of my ZM board! I have the frame work and a bunch of details but needed that little bit of input from my friends! it's hard when I don't have many real world friends who share my passion for Nerd fun! :-) your Grots are still there waiting for my caress too as well as the Kans! shouldn't be too long until you get a package from me again!
I'm not worried at all about my stuff nerdy... you aren't on any time line. Just laughing at the nerdgasm that's been going on over the last page or so!
OH, I got your package yesterday... just in time for Christmas! Thank you! Going to mat and frame it and give it a place of honor in my man-cave!

Really! That's great! I hope you like it close up you deserve it mate being displayed in someone's man cave is an honor
@gits, hands off nerds package , well it's Christmas so go for it @nerdfest, darn you and your musings, the wife is resting getting over her flu, and the kids are playing with their toys so I got to play with mine.
Mocked up a square for my own board but realized the cost for the one square.
This is quite a fun blog to keep up with. Going to have to go back sometime and bask in all of the awesomeness that fills the other 130ish pages too.
All of this talk of interiors has me overly excited about my battlesystems stuff coming in, will have to see what you come up with and compare notes when I've got my hoard of cardboard bits.
Must have engine room and power generator room, your recent "melted" terrain piece will fit in ! Be interesting to see something along the lines of the Force field generator scene from Starwars, you know just a walkway with what looks like infinity dropping away beneath.
dsteingass wrote: Damn Damo! I had a few pages to catch up on! You really don't half-ass anything do you bro?
Nope! I sure don't dude just hang onto your hats for this arvo then! BIG photo drop today of actual ZM stuff! you'll love it so much you'll never leave..... or something like that
You could say I'm in the Zone! or i'm well on the way! I got up today and made a coffee, then realised it was 26 degrees and a little hot for drinking coffee at 8am! so I grabbed a cool bottle of water and hid in the nerd room and got to gluing some boards together!
i'm going to sort of break each little bit down so i don't flood you too much, firstly a couple of pics of the work i've done so far, the framework if you will you'll see a few of the tile edges don't meet up perfectly but that was always going to happen along the way due to the fact I had to cut the tiles off an edge of each larger tile, but I really don't think it's going to impede the overall look, I'm happy with it so far!
Righto, that's what I'm working with and now for the additions to give the Flesh Eaters Ship (c'mon people what shall we call their flagship??)
Storage area:
Spoiler:
firstly the storage docks, filled with ammo, crates, fuel, promethium, spare parts etc....
Medi-Bay
Spoiler:
Next up is the Medical bay area, should be able to run this along one length of wall. lots of good little bits here including a waste chute for human waste...... like arms and legs etc.
Engine room
Spoiler:
Engine room/maintenance area is going to be cluttered but still usable for a game (I hope)
Command Deck!
Spoiler:
Command Deck for seth and friends! a lot going on here and the room will be the only one that's not an actual tile that fits in with the others, or I won't have enough room to detail it like i want to, it'll be more of an area where we need to get to reach during a game rather than a battlefield :-) but it will be full of win!
everyone need a sentry gun on the wall right!
Now thanks to Theo I was given the idea to have a navigator type servitor or somesuch hanging over a pit filled with wires and cables connecting them in midair! the first thing I did was make some cables and fill the bottom of the 'pit with them!
Chapel
Spoiler:
Here's a simple one, the Chapel, I don't imagine Marines sitting for a service so decorating the walls with some suitable bits should convey the feel.
Random add ons!
Spoiler:
additions, these will be shared among the tiles to add detail to random walls throughout the ship, whether they really flow or not I'm not concerned with as I am going with the rule of COOL!
here are some of the bulkhead lights added, the plan is to use the airbrush to give them a osl glow (fingers crossed, although i may need to research)
now a bit of a shout out to the dudes i sourced and approached my materials from

and now for me the hardest and most important part was the walls! I was helped by a local Australian company who also sell on ebay, they don't usually do custom work but I convinced them it was a worthwhile project and Luke was simply amazing in emailing me throughout and had a very good grasp of what i was wanting to achieve, not to mention the quality of all of the products I have gotten from these guys is excellent, they have a brilliant skill set with working with the extruded polystyrene sheets and i'm more than happy and will be using them again!

So? ideas, paint schemes? thoughts? I crave them at this stage! it's shaping up to be bigger than i thought but ooodles more fun!
wow, what a great load of bits...
this is going to be good....
i look forward to seeing this board come together...
as for paint scheme suggestions, i see rust-red floors and walls, scuffed with some silver...
maybe black consloes and stuff...
i could easily see a clean white sci-fi environment, with some neon blues, but that would be a nightmare to paint...
Nerd, I will be disappointed if the flesh tearers allow their emperor given vessel to become rusty . It needs a clean look except for maybe some areas hat have battle damage from boarding actions. If need be the league of extraordinary janitors can make their way to you to help clean up the hulk.
Also I thought I would pop by and say I also love your ork skintone, especially their pinkish lips and I'm totally stealing that if and when I do orks again.

Also is there a name for he ship yet?
i didn't mean that the ship should be rusty, but a nice Mechanicum style red...
rust-red is how i would describe the color...

I looked around and couldnt find one so...
I made a model and ran it to shapeways (I'll be getting one printed up myself at some point to mold and then cast.) of a removable doorway that scales to ZM.

Ooh I like the name the Charnal Forge! easier for me to say! glad stage one is coming along to your approval! I tend to have big plans that fall over when i start! this feels different though thankfully, and I shall be keeping an eye on that design Galorn looks sweet! I've a couple of doors to include but some blast doors would be better in areas.
@Weety: steal away my dear and thank you very much! I get a bit of a blush on when good painters that I follow like my stuff! those Orks are fun to paint and that skin is surprisingly quick to do.
@Theo: I cracked up with the League of extraordinary Janitors don't fear I shall make sure the Flesheaters run a tight ship
@Jah-joshua: Hi dude thanks for having a look! I thought about rust red colour but decided against it due to the Marines being red themselves but looking through my paints I have found I own three bottles of Vallejo Air light grey (why I don't know!) and some white, so after reading the FW masterclass book I think a light slightly weatherd colour would give good contrast?
I'll be waiting for some more tiles to finish the boards and then once I have them all together it'll be a mass primer day! what do you guys think I should replicate as far as layout designs go? open spaces? I'm not sure what will be more beneficial to make better mazes for war?
Looking good, Damo. I could see a nice bone white for parts of the ship working well with the red armour of the marines - or perhaps only for designated "clean" areas such as the Apothocarium, Bridge, etc?
Something like the Chapel could be done in.. say, copper/brass/bronze flooring, and the engine rooms in more utilitarian greys and metal floor.
Just throwing some ideas out there, I'm always impressed with how quickly you manage to actually get stuff done, in contrast to myself.
You could steal bossfearless ideas in his dubstep tau build and use some small keychain picture frame LCD screens on he bridge to be view screens. Download some pics of your hellsack if you still have it, or some cheeses Star Trek original series sort of images onto it to aid in the "realism" department . They also would create some actual OSL effects.
no worries, mate...
i check in on your stuff all the time, i just don't post unless i have something to contribute...
actually, i'm just in it for the dogs, and the nude photos...
i like the white/grey idea, but i was suggesting something darker for a big project, because i still do everything by hand...
i need to remember that some lucky buggers have airbrushes, and can do big stuff much easier now...
a light grey will definitely pop, and show off all the details...
Very busy again! relaxed and chilled with a brush in hand! got a lot of little works done to show you all!
I got the first coat of green on Gits Runts, even with the one coat over a washed primer it starts to look orkish already
chained up my command deck psychic guy! need to do some kind of frame to hang wires into his head with? I'm not real good with making stuff like that so any helpful hints are needed.
I have nearly finished the very cool Techmarine I started I wasn't feeling in a painty mood but as soon as I started this guys again I was just completely zoned in and wanted to get it done! I didn't quite get him done as much as i wanted but hopefully next time he'll get his body and then the harness done!
Loving these heads! totally happy with these so far progress wise! such a huge difference between the Forgeworld ones and the much softer new GW Libby head not that it's bad, just the details seem to bleed a bit when compared to the very finely detailed FW ones! but that aside I'm nearly done on the skin tones and have the detailing and hair left
There we go! I may finish these models before i dive headlong into 'The Charnal Forge' as usual, lets catch up tomorrow eh!
Snrub wrote:I like how the heads get progressively angrier as you go along.
Starts out just kinda sullen, moves on to a pissed of sneer, starts yelling, and just goes full RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE.
Also how do you get that nice brassy gold on your techmarine?
lol I never noticed the angry progression of the faces! but yep, that's exactly what it looks like! which brass bits do you mean? the bright copper bits or the more bronze/gold bits? I'm happy to help
Gitsplitta wrote:Most excellent update my friend. Grotty grots, humans in chains & screaming marines.
What could be better?
Love the way the tech marine looks. Very well done!
Thank you master Gits! 10 Grots a leapin' i'm toying with the idea of doing some subtle differences in skin tone on them and see what happens? I know i can churn them out with my normal Ork skin in a sitting but I feel perhaps some darker or different blends might be cool?
humans in chains sounds like a Chaos love song? and I do indeed like that Techmarine too! my first one i've painted up and now i want to do more with servitors
San76 wrote:All looking fantastic. How do you churn them out so fast! Love the red on the tech; looks almost molten!
Thanks San! how do i churn them out so fast? easy I only paint the front and show photo's that look better than they are ... No really I just have a day a week where i paint for about 4-5 hours with the music cranked while Nerdwench is working, but I plan what i work on and aim to finish a certain part or colour as I go, and if you notice I have much faster updates once I learn my own version of painting a certain colour, like red, I can do a 10 man tac squad in a day if I'm in the mood!
Malika2 wrote:Nice miniatures and all, but continue with the Zone Mortalis stuff, very inspiring!
Yes sir...... it shall be done......soon
Now I did something silly, or rather not silly just feeble minded I was going to magnetize the Libby arm right yeah, well I forgot and glued it on but all is not lost, the pose I ended up with with the staff arm and other open palm look great imo and I was mucking around with other heads I've painted and the Commander Culln bare head looks freakin' cool in the body but I'll show you later!
nerdfest09 wrote: lol I never noticed the angry progression of the faces! but yep, that's exactly what it looks like! which brass bits do you mean? the bright copper bits or the more bronze/gold bits? I'm happy to help
Hope it's a good one for all in 2014! I'll do my part and try and spread as much cheer as I can!
and to kick it off in Nerdville, I'm going to now list my projects you will see this year, I am going to plan my months out and try to not veer so off course as much still a lot of models to paint and still from a variety of factions so enough to keep almost everyone amused at some stage!
I have to do this the year of 2014!:
Death Company Drop Pod
Death Company Rhino
Death Company troops
Sanguinary priest in Termie armour, Sang Priest w/jumpack, sang priest in PA re do!
Orks of various ilk!
Commissions for friends!
Zone Mortalis!
I think that's it I'll have to have a look when I'm at home and make sure that's all, but that's what i really want to finish this year, of course they'll be the random model or squad you didn't see coming
whalemusic360 wrote: I feel that you are obligated to do at least on IG kit, to keep that army "alive".
You are so right! I forgot I had my IG tanks looking at me like "please sir can you molest me with your brush?" so i will!.... ad them to the list Alfred!
Thanks guys! I am positive this year will be awesome! I don't think I will get everything painted but I plan on attacking that lot and seeing how I go it will be a happy Nerd year
You guys remember those old alien toys you put in a glass of water and they grow massive overnight right? well, I accidentally dropped a space marine helmet in my paint water last week! didn't think a thing of it until......
Great! so now I need to find another water glass for my painting! Oh man will the indecency never end!
Yep Fleshies all the way Whaley! :-) I got it off Etsy ages ago and it just arrived recently, it was bought sort of as a Christmas 'allowance' from Nerwench!
dsteingass wrote:Vallejo Game Color Tinny Tin is the equivalent.
Ah thanks. I'll keep an eye out for it.
nerdfest09 wrote:Yep Fleshies all the way Whaley! :-) I got it off Etsy ages ago and it just arrived recently, it was bought sort of as a Christmas 'allowance' from Nerwench!
Shouldn't that just be "all the Whaley"?
Seriously cool helmet though. Whats it made of?
Also got a link to the etsy page?
Looks like yet another surprisingly good showing by plastic soda bottle caps. Those things can look good in random places. Nice helmet, something more to add to the pile huh?
I may have to do a "things I want to get done" over on my blog too, though I'll have to be conservative or disappointed
Oooh no Gits i didn't see that!..... until now! there's a few hidden gems on there if you sift through the dodgy stuff! that's damn cool! the next thing I want from there is a large blueprint image of the Bolter!
whalemusic360 wrote: I have that same nerf gun. Been meaning to put some rc car batteries in if for increased shootisity.
Just be careful of the voltage.
That's a very quick way to burn out the wiring and motors if you're not replacing them / not careful.
The best / funniest thing to do witha Vulcan is get an 18V drill, replace the handgrip on the Vulcan with the drills handgrip (and the 18V power pack!), replace the motor in the thing with the 18V drill, and wire it all up.
Hilarity ensues.
I want to get the new White version myself. (To go with the Gloss Black one I already have)
If someone had some marines put aside specifically for use as a Death Co squad in a rhino transport, how could they possibly equip them? I have an urge to just give them bolters but don't want to make them a crap unit? I have unit with jump packs but they're quite expensive.
Well, Death Company Marines are relentless, so you can give them Bolters and they could still charge...
I think the best for them is a few bolters (3-4), a few BP & Chainsword (3-4), and a few "special weapons" (Thunder Hammer, Flamer Pistol, Melta pistol, etc...)
They should be able to handle any foe, without the huge cost of giving them Jump Packs !
Techmarine is done! and so is Telion even got some more Grot skin done and added some more add ons to the ZM board! PHEW! i'm in a good spot to keep going now next week, the sooner I get this latest lot done and dusted I can start on my next project which happens to be another Primarch! Fulgrim
but first lets have a look at some finished stuff eh! how's about a Techmarine! I like this guy, I wasn't sold on him at first when I finished him today, something threw him off with the backpack, so i added some hazard stripes and a yellow chipped claw and it just seemed to feel more in tune with what i wanted
And here's my scout sarge! Telion yet to be renamed although he does sort of look like Gits
The Librarian I was planning on magnetizing but ended up gluing I thought I best show you the final pose and how awesome he looks I really like the head on him and how he gets a sense of movement with the conversion, he's just got some blocked in colours so he's not boring at this stage and I decided that having a special Jump pack Libby would be more useful in a BA force
speaking of jump pack dudes I added the arms from Korvydae and a Chain Axe head from FW to get a different kind of brutal assault troop for my Vanguard Vets
What's that?.......... you want Orks? how about Grots instead? I finished the skin on them so next up it's some clothes for the little blighters
You still want more pics! really!! Oh alright then how about some add ons for the Zone? I wanted to give them a more 4d feel to them with some height and interest, so some pipes running between walls high up and some vents and wires etc. should be pretty good when painted if I can do it justice that in irslef will be a challenge as i'm used to painting mini's and not much larger!
There we go, hope that's not too much of a flood for ya! love to see what you think!
I think Telon is my favorite of the group. He looks great, real vet look to him. Everything else looks good too. Love seeing grots, they are just goofy.
The tech marine turned out fantastically. All metal and red... just the way he should be. You need some kind of writing on his purity seals though. They just stand out as kind of bare when compared with the rest. Great job on Telion. One of my favorite figures. As always, your skin and faces are among the best on the net. The librarian and assault marine show great promise. Not enough chain axes in 40k... ever.
The grots of course look wonderful and steal the show. Keep in mind they're Bad Moons so there should be splashes of yellow and black scattered throughout.
Board section looks just fantastic. Stroke of genius adding the overhead pipelines in, though it will make it a bit more difficult to play on (something to consider in the future).
I'm already fearful of being attacked by the grots.....well at least my ankles are fearful . Once again excellent work on those guys. The lion looks sweet, not aunt may sweet , but almost looks remorseful for not being able to unleash the old flesh eater way of battle. The hunger is still in his heart to go bite someone's head off litterally . That techmarines is stunning as well , though he better get over to that ZM board and fix the exposed wiring before the imperium finds itself in a Lawsuit for negligence.
Damo, you are so damn prolific it makes me want to cry. Just fantastic work by one of my fav painters around. You were made to paint grots. No doubt. And the sniper mini is actually my favorite SM sculpt they've done. Your interpetation of it is fantastic and Ill have to paint one up myself one of these days. Inspiring. Always.

I may have to find your place of residence and purloin it once it's down.
Also (unsurprisingly) your hazard stripes are excellent.
Thanks snrub, how about once it's done we organize you a trip down to Tassie for a game? I'd like to get San76 and Azazelx here as well at some stage! not to wear anyone's skin or anyhting, just a game and Nerd talk
inmygravenimage wrote:You're just a bloody show-off aren't you? Looking great, but the highlight for me has to be that exposed wiring, very cool.
Ha, thanks Graven, I thought you'd like the wiring, it's something I can tell you'd be into! lets hope it looks good when i finally get paint on them all, I wanted to give the board some cinematic feel without going too overboard, I think pipes and wiring work
San76 wrote:Man, what an epic update!
I think the tech looks reall nice. The greens contrast well with the reds and the metal on the axe is really interesting.
Telion is great. Love the pose, love the painting. The face is really well done.
The skin on the grots looks really nice, the transitions look so smooth!
As for the board....well...if only you lived closer I would totally be nagging to use it!
Thank you San! I do like the Tech myself now I changed him that little bit with his servo harness I was going to add sort of verdigris to the axe but didn't think it needed that on it when i got to that stage and I like the metal look!
Dr H wrote:Good work, NF. The scout is very nicely done.

Look forward to more.
DrH cheers! and more there shall be my friend!

Thank you WM! I have to agree with you about Telion, he does look very 'Vet-y' it's not my smoothest or neatest job but he looks cool enough for me to use

Great update Nerdy! Looking forward to more.
Hey Gits, thanks mate! I have to say those Grots are very cute! remind me a lot of cheeky Gremlins or Critters or something! I will indeed BadMoon them up a bit for you, did you want me to re do the striped pant leg on the Herder to be black/yellow? the ZM boards shouldn't get too cluttered with what I'm adding, I want to make sure they're still usable so the pipes etc. don't extend back far enough to get your hand stuck and the purity seals on the Tech? I am not a big one for adding squiggles as I am never happy with them although I can agree with you it might need them, at this stage lets say they're written on in infared binary code?.....

Theoooooo! man, when i'm done with those Grots you'll see the conniving little duded just about jump through the monitor to create havoc! don't be too harsh on the exposed wires, it's a big ship i'm sure there's going to be more areas of maintenance!

Congrats on all that... Like, really.
Pretty much everything I was aiming for thanks Yggs!

Bebop thanks mate, means a lot coming from you dude! I'd love to see what you did with a Telion model actually!

Ha, welcome aboard the bad ship Nerdy-pop! thanks for the compliment, if you did indeed trudge through that many pages you would have seen a lot of jumping around and progress with things, i'm a lot more settled now thanks to all the mates who regularly harass me on here but there's still going to be a lot of different things being painted!

You don't need to change anything Nerdy, just toss some black and yellow bits into the grots and all will be well.
Binary idea is neat, but a little too machine-god for a purity seal. However... a design of some sort might work just fine. No need for squiggles (leave that to Knightley). Perhaps something resembling a wiring diagram??
I've seen people do those blue/white engineering blueprints for purity seals and banners... somewhere. Probably here as I don't roam much. They looked pretty neat.
New stuff is looking great, Damo. Your ability to paint so quickly inspires, encourages and depresses me. Techmarine and Telion both look great, and both converted marines are coming along beautifully (though the huge skull on Assault-dude's shoulder pad might be a little big!) Maybe press-mould something smaller with instant mould and greenstuff?

Yeah mate, that sounds like it'd be a blast. We could have an awesome four way.
You have probably already thought of these ideas, but just to voice them.
I think fans mounted high up similarly to vents would look good and provide contrast. You would have to Hazard strip around them to stop numpty marines sticking there fingers in.
Cupboard doors. An Odd Bulkhead door, going nowhere, janitors need somewhere to hide/store stuff.
Service ladders. A ladder running up the wall to nowhere(would have been to access the ceiling.) Again just something different.
Tapestries, well maybe not tapestries but you know what I mean. Banner hung up crossed power mauls slung underneath, motivational slogan etc etc.
Here is a link to someone you probably already know about. Any shipping issues let me know.
I've not commented on this log for a while and man, these updates are brilliant, how do you bash out models so quick?! The ZM board is going to look awesome when its done and I can't wait for more updates on it!

Cam, thank you so much! that's some brilliant ideas dude! I was thinking of things that made sense to the eyes at that level, but ladders and storage rooms etc, do make sense and will add that bit of difference to parts that would otherwise be boring, I do think I have a fan or two from zing lying around but I'll have a hunt and see if i can track them down any more ideas please just throw 'em up for me man i love seeing what other think when they see what i'm working on!

Thanks Hoe! (*snicker*.... Hoe*) get commenting, it keeps me going like most of us on here! good/bad it don't matter to me, how do i bash out my models so quick? i'm very organized mate, you'll find I plan my models out into sections, assembling and colour priming them, then blocking in colours and washing and then finally just highlighting and detailing them, I can work on a few projects this way quite fast, I only paint for about 4 hours a week on one day usually so it pays to know what I want to achieve.

Theo I'm already so excited I can't hold my own brush!
Woke up today this afternoon (good start) and was feeling a little less sluggish than I usually do when I have to work all night, so I made the usual drink of choice for me a scalding hot black coffee and went and pondered my life in the Nerd room! :-) while pondering, I pondered about my lemartes conversion and went about seeing what i have to use for it, wanting to do something a little different I decied to use one of the new bare heads i also got in the mail today, so my Lemartes will be made of the Ivanus Enkomi body, the sons of horus legion command bare head which looks old and weary as something fun! the actual lemartes arm with crozius and whatever random bolt pistol I fnd :-) I'll whip up some pics tomorrow for you!
I hope so Gits, it still needs to feel 'Chaplainy' without the skull helmet, it's a bit of a test for me but should look good i hope, the crozius arm won't be here for a couple of days but I'll show you what I've got tomorrow night for him. should also have some colours blocked in for Grot clothes too which will be cool!
then its onto the Kans, do they have any particular weapons etc i need to put on them?
O.k Gits I'll paint them and send them for you to swap as you need! :-) Ummmm RL's is Rocket Launcher right? lol and Grotzookas the big mouth cannon thingy?
Whaley, Nope no Lemartes from you dude :-) you gave me the Libby in termie armour (who is staring at me all blue already!)
nerdfest09 wrote: O.k Gits I'll paint them and send them for you to swap as you need! :-) Ummmm RL's is Rocket Launcher right? lol and Grotzookas the big mouth cannon thingy?
Though I follow your blog closely, I am afraid when you start talking fancy smancy names I have no idea, but,,,,BUT....
Would this guy help at all, I have a heap (big box full) of old SM guys. This is amongst them. He is a chaplain, at anyrate. If he is of any use let me know. I will one day get around to my SM, got about 3000pts to paint up, but if things like this are good for others, I am more than happy to send to a good home.
Spoiler:
Says hes from 1994 so I guess early armour, I think that's what your after isn't it. Please shout at me if I am wrong.
lol Orkstraylian Orks good name Snrub! and Gits thanks for the link, as I'm thinking of theming them around Kommando's those heads would fit in with the other special force type ones with masks etc but they're not due to emerge for a while yet, i have enough to keep me going which I need to actually finish, it's hard but I'm forcing myself to finish what i have to first .... shouldn't stop me stockpiling parts though
now speaking of parts, I mentioned last night I was kitbashing a Lemartes and had decided to give him a bare head, so i snapped a couple of pics to show you the head I chose, it's a little different and not often seen having a bare head chaplain, I think this head is pretty cool as he looks a little older and focused, and i must also thank Cam for the offer of that Chaplain dude I'd love him if you really don't mind? I'm happy to swing you a few bucks for mail too
here's the beginning of Lemartes
and in the same envelope was the head for my Dante that was the thing stopping me from going on with him, I wasn't feeling the model with the heads I had then i saw this one and thought it was perfect for a Flesh eaters Master, he appears battle worn and his steely gaze id full of purpose and the promise of death.....
I was fiddling with my ZM board with the open tiles and added the start of some detailing for under the surface I can see the pipe a little higher than the level of the floor so I am going to add a small jack or lift so it looks like it's been pulled up slightly for work .... or something like that
And finally I'm going to flood you with pictures of my helmet! ....... while that will have some of you clicking out of the thread knowing the way my mind works
just need to paint the side pipes and add them and she's done!
Matt.Kingsley wrote:Love the helmet, Nerd! Dante and Lemartes look great, too!

Oh gak! I just had a brainwave on how to paint it, too!
Now I just need $235.29. Maybe next payday....
Hang tight Az, I have another supplier for helmets in Queensland who's making a SM Helmet so it should be quite reasonable price wise and as for paint..... when/if..... nope.....when i get another one I'm getting a mate in the automotive industry to paint another Flesh Eater Helmet up for me in candy metallic colours
Yeah..I was just thinking of that...could you raise the "street level" up with a sheet of foam or something? then you could have some recesses and like WM said, have pipes and techno-gubbins pass underneath? Maintenance recesses could give some cover and add yet another layer of visual interest.
Oooooooo if you have your automotive friend paint the next one, you could first stencil some small letting around the edge, or do the laurels, then the candy paint on top .
