Well Ultramar anyway!
For my 1000th post I wanted to do something special, so here it is. Yay 1000th post!

This is my first blog, so be kind to me. I have decided to re-do my Ultramarines. I will be using an ancient Rome/ Greek theme for my army hence the title of my blog.
I will try to update this on a weekly basis.

Chaplain Cassius-125pts

Predator- autocannon, lascannons- 120pts

Upgrade:meltabombs for other tactical squad- 5pts

Right now I am working on my counts as Vulkan He'stan, it’s very WIP at the moment but I couldn’t wait to post some pics. I am still waiting on a couple bits for him like some Dire Avenger helmets for his helmet crest. Sorry for the REALLY bad pics at the moment. I can’t find my camera and had to use my phone. I will update them when I find my Camera.
Here he is. I might write up some fluff about him later.

Questions, C & C appreciated.
Thanks for looking!

Looking really good so far. Really like the Greco-Roman style, harkens back to the old days of the Ultramarines, when they evoked that style a lot more. Can't wait to see what else you produce.

Thanks for your comments. The sheild is a spartan shield from scibor. Next in my production line is a squad of sternguard with the roman looking tabards from the FW Sevrin Loth Honour guard set then a TL auto-cannon Dreadnought.

You should take a look at the Chapterhouse spartain marine heads... I think they'd fit your theme perfectly.

Chapterhouse Spartain Heads

I have a set for a special project and they are quite nice.

@aranciatadaoc- Thanks!

@Gitsplitta- Thanks, I've already seen those I quite like them. I might use them for a few Veterans.
Here's What I'm using at the moment http://www.bolterandchainsword.cnom/index.php?autocom=ineo&mod=article&op=printable&id=504.

@specialforces88- I’m planning on converting the sergeants and veterans to make them look really Roman/Greek as for rank & file troops I might only have a couple minor conversions. And my phone is a Nokia N-8 12 megapixel. It just doesn’t take good macro photos.

Update time!
I have started work on my sternguard squad and I have finished assembling my Sergeant. I have also come up with an easy to make combi-melta conversion which is good because I have to make 8. I am still painting my counts as Vulkan; I’ll post pics when I’m finished.
I still haven’t found my camera so I will have to be apologising for some bad pics again. Without further ado here is my seargent.

A view of his bolter.

And my Combi-Melta conversion.

Questions, C & C appreciated.
Thanks for looking!

I like the melta, you might try carving off the "feul" drum from the side of the melta that you cut that barrel off of. If you use a realy sharp razor and lots o care you should be able to attatch it to the side of your bolter. I did that for combi meltas on my chaos terminator and they turned out nice. Yours looks substantially easier than what i went through though. jobs a good un so far.

This is Sparta... A New Project... @ 2011/07/02 06:50:14

Post by: Flying Pooo

@sennacherib- Thanks for the tip. I deffinatly do not have a sharp razor at the moment my current one is as blunt as a spoon. I have ordered a new one online. I might try this when it arrives.

I like your combi melta so far. A lot of homebrew combi weapons look super bulky, but yours is looking good! Is there a bolter barrel on there somewhere that I can't see? Bolter barrels are quite small, I think. You could fit it under the melta barrel maybe? You could trim the barrel off of a bolt pistol also and use that...

Let's see that He'stan!

Cheers,
Rawson

Nice! I was thinking of doing something very similar for some BA vanguard vets. Your pictures definitely attest to how well the concept looks as an end result. Very cool and sweet job, can't wait to see the rest. I'd also suggest looking into chapterhouse's spartan heads or max mini's if you want really large crests on your helmets.

This is Sparta... A New Project... @ 2011/07/02 08:15:44

Post by: Flying Pooo

@Rawson- Thanks for reminding me to put the bolter barrel on I had forgotten. I had to cut up a bolt pistol to get it. I might show mere pics of He'stan when I paint a little more of him. He's the first guy in the thread if you didn't notice.
@White wolf- I have looked into getting Chapter house and max mini heads. I think I am going to use the chapterhouse ones for my terminators and dire avenger helmet crests for the rest. I’m only putting them on veterans and sear gents.

You don't have to wait too long.

After 4 hours of nonstop painting, here is my counts as Vulkan He'stan. I am really happy with how he turned out. These pics really don't do him justice. I am still waiting on some dire avenger heads that are arriving in the mail that I will use as a helmet crest for him.

Hmm, I don't know if it is the camera or what, but the loin cloth and cape look a bit glossy and uniformly one color (i.e. no depth). Perhaps you should try a wash with baal red and then drybrush whatever red you use over it? A sepia wash on the gold parts might help as well. Other than that it's looking good!

This is Sparta... A New Project... @ 2011/07/02 16:55:56

Post by: htj

I agree with WhiteWolf01 in that the red looks a little glossy. Pehaps combining the wash with a very, very fine dry-brush of white would give it a more material-esque look.

EDIT: Oh, how rude of me! I forgot to say that in general it's looking really nice! Didn't mean to give just the criticism without the compliment.

I love the look of your model!!

I agree that it needs some detail work. I personally like using Baal Red to wash gold, then highlight it with your gold color then go over it with Orgyn Flesh. It gives it a nice deep color and make the gold look older.

And for the tabard, i would go over it again with the red and wet blend some orange into it for highlighting. Then a baal red wash. and Maybe if your Lucky and still have some laying around a Chesnut ink coat to keep with the shiny look you have going!

Also, try some Shadow gray for highlighting the armor. Its a subtle blue color without being as obviously bold as a white highlight or drybrush.

Looking forward to seeing more of your minis!!

Cheers,
FireCancer

Thanks for all your comments guys.
@WhiteWolf01- Thanks for your comment. It's defiantly the camera. I used baal red and chestnut ink on the cape and watered down chestnut ink followed by a devlan mud wash for the shield. I also painted the shield over an ultramarine blue basecoat so it has a slight beaten bluish tinge look to it.
@htj- Thanks. The red is a bit glossy I agree I'll give it a coat of matte varnish later maybe.
@ FireCancer- I gave the gold a watered down chestnut ink followed by a devlan mud wash I also painted the shield over an ultramarine blue basecoat so it has a slight beaten old bluish tinge look to it. I am really lucky to have some Chestnut ink don't know what I'd do without it. As for highlighting I have given it a subtle first stage ultramarine blue highlight it looks maybe a little too subtle I might do a second highlight of 1:1 ultramarines blue and skull white if I can be bothered. That's how I usually do it.

I just found my camera. YAY! I have taken better pics of my counts as Vulkan He'stan (need to five him a name anyone have any Ideas?). I have painted a lightening effect on the spear (my first wait second try).

Here are the updated pics. My camera did not pick up the red too well.

Captain MepHestan? Erm... I dunno about a name. I've gone about it more finding which captain said named character works best as (Shrike as captain of the auxiliary assault company, or something like that), if he's serving in a captain like role. Though for yours...Captain Caecilia (referring to an arbitrary goddess of the hearth/ fire I found in a .2 second search with google. Now how's that for screwing history?) could be a pretty cool name. Otherwise Captain Hephaestus would fit with the Greek portion of what you're looking for. Or, of course, Captain Prometheus, referring directly to bringing the fire to the enemy.

I vote Captain Prometheus (even if it is a bit too used these days).

Kaesar II

Definitely looks a lot better seeing it with much clearer photos! Looks great!!!

The highlights look pretty good, though as you said it is a little too subtle. For my HQ and hero models i use the 3 Inch rule. As opposed to the 3 Foot rule.

Yeah i have about a pot and half left of chesnut ink. That stuff is amazing. I am dreading the day i run out!
NO idea why GW stopped making the Inks... sad days indeed.

The red was done over with the Chesnut?

This is Sparta... A New Project... @ 2011/07/03 06:57:19

Post by: Flying Pooo

Thanks Firecancer. What is the Three Inch rule?
I only have 3/4 of a pot of chestnut ink. I have heard that Coat'd Arms' Ink Wash Chestnut is exactly the same. That's what I'm getting when I run out.
GW washes replaced the Inks, they are thinner and some say better.
Yes the red all has been done with Chestnut ink.

THe three inch rule, is if the model looks crisp and clean, and pretty at 3 inches, its good. Its more of a Painting competition styled paint job instead of a tabletop paint job.

Hmm, I will looking into picking up some of that and see how i like it compared to the GW ink.
Yeah, i Love washes, don't get me wrong. Though i think the Inks filled a nice role. The washes don't give you as Deep and as Rich of a color. They also whatever color you went over a shade of the ink, which I liked for certain things. The washes are too thin IMHO.

Update Time

@FireCancer- The three inch rule sounds great, I'll keep that in mind when painting Characters. I’ve also never really liked the washes as much as the Inks. I haven’t tried that ink yet but I think I’ll have to when my chestnut ink runs out.

So I’ve finished putting together my other stern guard sergeant, well not really its just blu tacked together at the moment because I like to paint them partially unassembled so I can get paint everywhere. I might finish painting him by the end of today. If you’re worried he doesn’t look Roman or Spartan enough I still have some bits I need to get hold of to finish this conversion. The online store I usually get my bits from isn’t stocking them at the moment. Anyone have Dire Avenger heads or the roman type tabard from the commander kitand want to da a trade?

Anyway here he is.

I was bored and was not that motivated to paint. So I wrote some fluff instead. I hope you like it and you don't die from wall of text.

Julius Prometheus (my counts as He’stan) was born on Calth into a wealthy family and was trained by the best in warfare and military tactics since the day he could pick up a sword. Noticing his unique leadership skills, his combat skill and his firm grasp of military tactics he was selected and inducted into the ranks of the Ultramarines 6th Company very quickly. Under the watchful eye of sergeant Telion he served with distinction in his role as a sergeant in a scout squad. He then served flawlessly for 20 years as a tactical squad sergeant and then a stern guard sergeant. The inquisition noticed his unique talents and recruited him into the ranks of the Deathwatch. He served under the leadership of Librarian Shaidan of the Mantis Warriors for a decade. After the death of Librarian Shaidan he became the sergeant and led the squad. Serving flawlessly for another half decade he was then inducted into a special deathwatch squad created by the Ordo Hereticus to combat the heretic threat growing on the world of Protus IV. While serving in this role he gained a strong hate for heretics. He was given special equipment by the Ordo Hereticus; a master crafted Nemesis Halberd called Demon Bane and a master crafted hand flamer called Purgery. Upon his return to the 6th company he now performs the role of shadow captain of the 6th Company.

Brutis Antarro (my Sternguard Sergeant pictured above) was born into a noble family with a long line of space marine inductions. He is Julius Prometheus’ lifelong friend and has served under Julius’ leadership since induction. They have made it out of many dire situations together and Julius has come to rely on Brutis’ keen eye for shooting, sound logic and tactical advice. Brutis’ uncontrollable rage has also helped them scrape through impossible odds. He also is a fanatic who quotes the codex fervently while slaying his foes. He may make a great Chaplain one day. Upon his return to the 6th Company he was made a stern guard sergeant. His stern guard squad acts as Julius’ Honour guard.

The usual C & C is Appreciated.

That looks great! Fantastic work. The only thing I could reccommend is if not already used is to use some of the Citadel washes, like devlan mud for the gold, or badab black for metal, it would really add some depth to these already fantastic models! Great stuff nonetheless!

Update for today.
I have just finished assembling my Landraider Crusader. This was the old Metal kit and was a pain in the to assemble. I had bought the kit back in 2006 I assembled the hull and then got to the turrets and I thought stuff this. It has been sitting in the back of my cupboard since then. Today I finally got the nerve to finish it. 2 hours a lot of green stuff and what seemed like 2 bottles of superglue later (I think I got a little high from all of the fumes) I was finished. With the help of this awesome tutorial I was able to finish with a lesser degree of difficulty. http://www.40kforums.com/vb/content.php/139-Land-Raider-Crusader-Sponsons-Assembly. Thanks to whoever made it.

I’m thinking I will use a couple Scibor Spartan Big shields, some Ravenwing Bike Wing Banner Bits and a couple laurels to make it fit my Roman/Spartan theme. Well here it is.
Anyone have any other Ideas?

Here it is

This Multi Melta Was a hassle to assemble I had to use a massive blob of greenstuff to get it to stay there. I think I’ll cover it up with the brass etched imperial eagles from the 40k basing kit.

The Hurricane Storm bolters were even harder to do. I had to bend some of the ammo feeds into the right positions because they were way off then cover up some unsightly joins with greenstuff because they did not fit properly.

I might have some painted pics for you guys tommorow.

I haven't done much today. I've been packing and getting ready for for a holiday to Queensland. Sorry this means no updates for a couple weeks.
I have just started painting my chaplain. I’m quite happy with how the black is turning out, well it isn’t really black just a really dark regal blue.
If anyone asks how I did the black it's a 1:1 Regal Blue Chaos black highlighted by adding a little bit of Fortress Grey to the previous mix.

Here's what I've done so far.

Until next time (around 2 weeks).
Bye,

Update Time: Here is what I've done since I have been back.

I have pimped out my Landraider a little and made it fit more with my army theme.
I'll have to buy a Tank brush or a Airbrush to paint it though as the thickest brush I have now is a standard brush.
Here it is.

I have also finished converting a Psyker for the Pimp My Sorcerer 40k P&M Contest (link below). I think I'll use him as a Librarian or something.

He more strikes me as a Chaos sorcerer than a librarian, but that's what you get when your base model is from a chaos sorcerer. I think it's the armor style, that's what's hard to make look imperial.

Good luck.

Thanks bigfish the red cape does look better. I kind of cheated with the face. It's just a Vallejo Game Colour Earth (Graveyard Earth) base coat, glazed with Vallejo Game Colour Earth mixed with a little bit of Black then It's washed with Devlan Mud. After that I just added the details. It's really easy to do and looks good. I might write a tutorial about it.

In the meantime here is my counts as Boss Snikrot that I made. Inspired by your combat expert (choppy) bigfish. He's basically an Ork ninja.
Iv'e added and altered a couple things on him but the batteries in my camera have run out so I can't take any pics.

And here are some pics of some of my other Orks if no one has seen them before.

The usual C & C is Appreciated.
Thanks for looking

your Snikrot is looking very nice although i swear he is a 40mm base character? doe'snt matter but i know quite a few people who would moan at that.

Thanks. Snikrot is a 40mm character but I don't think it will make much difference. And if it does make a difference it would be to my disadvantage as assaulting distances are measured from the base. People will be happy when Snikrot is a few mm short of assaulting their shooty units. Then again shooting distances are measured from base to base....

I also made that painting faces tutorial I said I would do.

And in case you guys anyone is wondering my Ultramarines are not dead yet. In fact I am working on a chaplain right now hopefully I will have finished pics by tomorrow.

Please check out the link and leave some comments.

Here's what I've been up to lately. I haven't done much with my Ultramarines as I was so inspired to work with my orks.

Here's the pics My converted Boss Snikrot.

And here is my converted boss Snikrot modelling a scratch built Trukk tyre I have made. The next thing I am going to scratch build is the rest of that truck so watch this space...

So far I like what you are doing, especially the Chaplain.

Also, I like your Combi Melta conversoin very much. I was thinking about how to make one that I like and have yet to come up with one - Thanks because I think I will use the conversion you used...simple, and the result is great.

Thanks, I have finished my chaplain now. And I like the Combi-Melta conversion too I'ts so easy to do. It beats buying ten commander Combi-Meltas which is what I was going to do.

Ok, here is my finally finished Chaplain.
With the best pics I could muster with my phone, here he is. (I'll update with better pics once I find my camera).

Oh, and here is a WIP of a veteran sergeant I just had to show. Before anyone asks he is the limited edition Sicarius model that was was released with the Fall of Medusa thing back in 2006. I thought that I wouldn't be able to use the double lightening claws in my list so I gave him a Bolt Pistol and a Powerfist instead. He is way too cool not to use in my army so I'll use him as a Tactical Sergeant.

Wow nicely done matey! Loving the robe and the wreath.
P.S have you tried using Asurmen blue wash before? It really helps to add depth to the cracks and crevices of your models, (eg the powerfist would look more 3d, or more realistic) and I think it would make your models that much MORE awesome!

Thanks to you both for commenting.
I do use a couple washes on my Ultras Asurmen blue being one of them. The effect is either dulled by a double coat of Matte varnish (because I find after going crazy with washes the mini is rather shiny) Or the camera is not picking up all of the detail. Either way I did apply another Asurmen Blue wash over him and he looks better. Not too shiny or dull maybe from now on I'll double coat my minis in Matte varnish and then wash with Asurmen Blue as I am quite happy with the shade of blue on the last guy.
Thanks very much for both of your advice.

There are no Tyranic war vet smurfs in this blog, that reminds me I do have two sitting around somewhere waiting to be painted up, they are great models. The last mini I posted may look like a Tyranic war vet smurf but it's a slightly modified limited edition Sicarius model released back in 2006 with the Fall of Medusa campaign thingy.

No worries, this might be a better pic.

Slightly darker light settings on my camera will hopefully bring out more detail.

Update Time

Ok, so Iv'e recently joined the Dakka Painting and modelling competition in an effort to get me motivarted to paint something. (The link to the competition is below).
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/403045.page

In some recent bits trades I have aquired some awesome bits for converting my Ultramarines. Including an awesome trade with nerdfest09 where I got some Awesome Heads for my UMs (thanks nerdfest ). So expect to see some nice conversions quite soon.

Ok so here's a mock up of of the mini I'll be painting for the competition. He's basically a metal kitbash. A cookie for the person who guesses all the parts. (Hint; not all of them are GW).

Thanks for looking guys and girls.
C&C is always appreciated!

Very close and thanks for the compliment.
you can have a cookie I've already started on. Just realised this is MASSIVE.

The correct answer is;
Spoiler:
Master of the watch body from the MOTC set, Iv'e kept the shaft/handle of his axe and added a knife from the honour guard chapter champion as a spearhead, Scibor Spartan shield, Chapterhouse Spartan head and the backpack is the one from the limited edition web exclusive sergeant. And then of course a 25mm sloted base.

Actually this idea is incredibly old hat.

Sons of Sparta Space Marines painted by Anthony Warrington won the 40k Best Squad @ Golden Demon in 1999.
Showcased in WD262 Eavy Metal Page.

Just a recylced late 90's idea, nice to see it done again though.

Thanks for the compliments mate! I do love painting gold. It's just Vallejo Brassy Brass washed with Gryphonne Sepia, very watered down chestnut ink and Devlan (butt) Mud; it smells awuful : . Sometimes I highlight it with boltgun metal and glaze it with either Regal blue or UM Blue to give it an old worn copper look.

Thanks, the aim of this army is to turn around all the Ultramarine hate. To make people excited to see Ultramarines.
The land raider is actually base coated atm, I'll get around to painting it sometime...

...But that's not today.
No Ultramarine work today.

But I did do this...

I had an epiphany today while watching vampires suck. That Segway scene made me LOL.
So I looked in my bits box, and deciding that I had sufferance parts, I made a Segway rough rider.
I tried to give him the most vampire looking head my bits box could supply (a dire avenger head) but he ended up looking like Spock. Come to think of it I could have used my left over Chaos sorcerer's head.
I just went along with it.

And this is what I came up with.

I still have a bit of work to do on the hood and the segway itself.
I hope you all like him so far!

Thanks for looking!

The Flamer is a Grey Knights Incinerator with the tubing cut off the back and a melta bomb stuck on the other side to cover the gap. then I just cut off the hand and most of the forearm and glued the flamer on.

Just a quick update.

I have finished one of my Sternguard squads now. Here is the most recent member.
Hope fully I'll have time for a massive painting session on the weekend because I feel this army is moving too slowly. I am starting IG now (watch this space) and still have some Orks I want to finish. I don't want too many projects going on at once.

Enough of me talking to myself!

Here's the mini.

The one on the last Stern guard?
That's from a normal SM torso with a Terminator COD piece glued right in the middle.
The other Stern Guard torsos are from FW Severin Loth's honour guard and one has a BA torso.

Update Time.

Here's a Rhino I slogged away painting for 4 hours today. I'm quite Happy with it but I still need to make it look more Spartan like.

I put a lot of effort into weathering this. Who said Ultramarines always wash their Rhinos.

There is a lot of Zoom on the pics if you click on them!

Sorry no detailed interior. The hatches are glued shut.

I'm thinking of using any of these to pimp out my Rhino!

Any other Ideas?

Update

Here is a small tutorial.

I have stumbled upon a new technique.
I was idly drawing a Spartan helmet and I thought i could use it on my Ultramarines. So I made my own Spartan "Decal".

-I drew my decal. I copied it from a picture on the Internet so alternately you could just print a design out.
-I used a glue stick to glue it to a thin cardboard backing. (I used the cardboard from the box my command squad came in).
-I trimmed the cardboard to fit the "decal".
-Then I used some cheap home brand super glue and spread it evenly on the back my "decal" and let the glue seap evenly into the cardboard. I wasn't too liberal with the glue so that I would wreck the other side.
-I painted the top of the "decal" with a few thin layers of PVA. It was set hard now so that it couldn't warp.
-Then I painted it.
-After that I gave it a couple sealing coats of PVA.

Here it is.

Here it is blue-tacked on a Rhino.

I think I've found a way to customise my vehicles!

Thanks for looking!

Coming along nicely, Pooo! I think the conversions that you have done here are really good! The body you picked goes well with your spartan theme. Any chance we could see a pic of the spearhead? It looks like you have a nice energy effect there!

And the CC you requested, sir:
I'd like to see that gold broken up a bit. It's kind of overwhelming the model to have the Helm, shield, pauldron, and eagle all gold. Maybe pick out some of the detailing in silver, and maybe do the inner two rings of the shield in blue and white.
Hit the red of the crest and cloak with another highlight. Then it will really pop!
I don't know how your GS-fu is, but I'd like to see that shield with an on it, instead of that Scibor symbol.

Great work so far! If you're anything like me, it's the last 5% of a model that gets me. Finish strong, my friend!

Cheers,
Rawson

MY Deathstar unit is starting to take form. These are two of my TH SS Temrinators made using the GK Terminator kit. I used all scibor stuff for them ; Spartan Heads, Big Spartan Shields and the Big Spartan Shoulder pads.

That's all for now!

Thanks for looking!

Thank you kind sir!

bigfish wrote:They look kick ass!!!!!!!!!! i think the spears suit them perfectly as do the shields and faces. cant wait to see more

Thabks bigfish, I was going to use a normal CC terminator squad and use the Thunder Hammers but I'm so Happy I got the GK Terminator squad. It's so detailed and the spears fit my theme more.

PROGRESS

WIP of my Chaplain. VERY WIP at the moment.

AND ALSO

I've finally finished my Segway Rough Rider for the ++40k, Fantasy and Other Painting & Modelling Competition++ .

The Deadline is tommorow (for me anyway).

It's a miracle that I finished him today as this morning I had only just done the blue and boltgun metal basecoats. I only painted him in two hours (the base took longer than the mini). He is not painted to my best standard but I think he will do. I had to forgo some highlighting. About a quarter of that time was spent painting my first NMM. I decided I would try it out. The Imperial Eagle is NMM, and I'm quite happy with my first shot. Now I just have to write Up some Fluff, for both my entries.

I've Updated with Better pics.

That's all for now. Comments are always appreciated.

Thanks for looking!

well FP now i had to take a look at your work... never did i realize that you did the amazing tut for the eggshell basing methode...that is so inventive... will be trying that shortly too...

your models look very dark and cool...in the best sense of the way... and i really like the spartan take on the ultras. that suits them pretty well! atitude and look making a perfect match. the use of FW (?) like on chour first chaplian is so cool looking... i started with SM but since then went on to IG... but i see now how SM can still be fascinating... i will now follow your stuff very closley... [das war dann die letze warnung^^]

cheers, vik

will they be winterbased as your segway sarge? that would be interresting....like an eskimo army...

mind if i from time to time make a few suggestions for german corrections? the order of the sentece is slightly wrong... or you will sound like yoda^^

so:
ich werde jetzt auch deinen threads eng folgen...

slightly better but still not there^^

Post by: Flying Pooo

@Viktor

My IG will have winter bases but not the full Eskimo suits that the rough rider had. Although that might be an idea for an army as it was not too hard to do. However it did take a while waiting for 1 layer of GS to dry before applying another.
Although YES this army will have segway Rough Riders.

I knew I had something wrong with sentance order there.

The sentence order as I was thought is; Subject, verb, time, object, manner then place.

Or as my German Teacher says

SvTOMP Basically it is the word stomp with a v in between the S and the T. Or was it between the T and the O?

Now that I look at it I probably do sound yodaish. Sometimes it is hard to determine what the parts of sentences are. Thanks for the correction

I am Painting up a test model for my IG now actually.

I think I have decided on this scheme I made on DOW Soulstorm.

I should have the test model finished soon. I'll update this Blog or start a new one for my IG.

if you start a new one be sure to give me a nudge^^

that scheme doesn´t look too bad^^ reminds me a bit of the praetorian scheme... but this one is more urban and orangy^^

never heard of that SvTOMP rule...but then again i am a martyr to grammar... take any language you want... punctuation and spelling is too bad in my german too... did my diplas work with the big helping of my wife... otherwise i would have been not qualified for the dimploma because of such things as structure and the many typos i created^^

This is Sparta... A New Project... @ 2011/12/01 23:56:36

Post by: Flying Pooo

I'm not that great with grammar either. Hell I needed Google Crome's spell check to even spell the word correctly. Before I post anything on here. I literally check it for 5 minutes for any mistakes that I have made in grammar and spelling. I find many. For this post I found around 10 mistakes. Make that 13. Wait, 14 I didn't put a capital letter on the word make in that last sentence. Yeah, I also spelt sentence wrong thrice. In this sentence and the last two so. All up that's around 17 mistaks.

well....you are still young my friend so much will be learned and refined in the years to come...my techers always told me as a fresh schoolboy that i had a wrinting hand like a doc...they tend to scribble rather illegible...and for some reason i still write that way^^ in school i was the guy that never had to read his notes as even i had difficulties to do so^^

This is Sparta... A New Project... @ 2011/12/02 00:17:01

Post by: Flying Pooo

Well my writing is always illegible unless I take an age to write it. If I try to take notes quickly I cant read it later and if I try to write neatly I miss half of what I have to take notes for because I write too slowly. So basically I lose either way.

In essays, SACS and exams I lose most of my marks in the spelling and grammar sections as I am pushed for time. I also have lost some marks in the past because my writing is just plain illegible, although some teachers are better at reading my writing than others. I prefer taking my time, rather than working to a time constraint. That way my work is always better.

^Same. I take every opportunity to type something up instead of writing it, even when it can be an inconvenience. Writing too much hurts your wrists. Especially after a whole day of writing essays. After typing for twice as long as that I bet my wrists would not hurt as much. Hopefully with new technology we will never have to write again. Maybe we can attach wires and stuff to our brains so machines can write for us. It would be awesome before they start plotting revenge and take over.

This is Kind of an Update

If your're thinking eeeww yucky blood you are not a wargamer but a wuss. If your're thinking what is that beautiful monstrosity in the background you can call yourself a wargamer. I was waiting for a layer of GS to dry on one of the bits for that Orky dread and I went outside for a break to throw a ball for my dog and punch my speed ball. As you do. With one of my punches I swung too hard and hit the metal casing on the top of the Speed Ball. I cut myself pretty deep. It's the second time I have done it this month actually, the other time was on my birthday. And what is the first thing you do when you cut yourself? You take a picture of it to show off your battle wounds.

Anyway this is the only WIP shot of my Dread for some reason. If you want to see the Whole thing go to my new thread titled: Scratch Built Speed Freaks- The Kult of Segway.
I am aiming to scratch build a whole speed freak force. And yes the bikers will have Segways.

Yeesh. I remember this one time I was cutting a penny (part of a demonstration I regularly do for work) with some shears and cut a chunk of flesh from the old index finger. After driving home with a bandaged finger in the air, I made very sure to get some pictures of it and post on Facebook. Well, with a bandage on, though. Now there is a little reddish dent on my finger from that. The Segway fella is rather interesting, besides that he looks like Spock's dad and Segways never quite had the whole "quick" look to me. Each to his own, though, and creating a whole squad of them should be cool.

Kaesar II

Post by: Flying Pooo

^Oh that sounds so painful.
I was originally trying to make Spock on a segway as a one off figure for a painting competition (just for LOLs), but I failed to GS his 'live long and prosper' hand sign and sculpted gloves instead. Then i passed him off as an IG segway Rough Rider. It was just for LOLS and there will be a segway rough rider squad in my new IG army. Again just for LOLs. Also I am starting a speed freaks force with segway bikers. So basically I love segways. They will make my opponents laugh at me and then when his army is decimated under the tread of my segways he/she/it will stop his/her/it's laughter. That's the idea anyway!

^Gtraphic Tablet? Sounds nice! I just got a heap of money.

With part of that I bought the camera. It was very cheap, I managed to get it for $83 with a RRP of approx $200. Got to love boxing day sales! It's not a slr camera exactly. It just has a setting that changes those settings. I bought it because it was cheap and reliable. I also wanted more money to spend on minis!

Not to be harsh, but the Blood Angels icons and the Inquisition shoulder pads look out of place.

I like the concept behind army.

Post by: Flying Pooo

@Old Man Ultramarine- Thanks for commenting. I am too lazy to shave some of the Icons off. My new Sternguard squad has Red scorpion Icons on them. I tend to make up some fluff to counter my laziness. My excuse for the Inquisition Icons is that some of my Ultras have served within the Inquisition hence the Deathwatch Shoulder pads, and as for the BA icons, the only ones I see are the small gem like tear drops which I think just looks like ornate armour on Ultramarines. I'm still coming up for an excuse for the Red Scorpion Shoulder pads on my Stern guard!

@Vik-Thank ye! And Happy New Year to ye too!

@CommissarKhaine & bigfish - Yes They are from the Aegis defence line. And I used a LR turret covering thingy cut in half for the casing!.

Finally an Update

Thanks for all the comments that convinced me to do some more work on my Ultras.

Here is my whole Terminator Squad, the guy on the left is a little camera shy .

Here are the three I finished today.

Single photos.

"I don't like photos".

I don't think the pose of the legs worked well with all the bits I was putting this guy but I'm hoping the "cheer leader effect" will make him look good with his peers.

I mean seriously what is with this leg pose? I might just buy anther set of more static terminator legs and replace these, because to me they're just ugly.

Anyway that's it for now.

Thanks for looking everyone!

I like what I'm seeing!

For that Termie I'd consider cutting his legs at the knees and then repositioning them as you want them, possible use of GS would be included.

Post by: Flying Pooo

If anything I want to reposition his toes. It looks as if he is going to fall over, but repositioning the legs may make his pose more convincing. Thanks for the suggestion Hmelrose! It might save me a few bucks buying new terminator legs. It's at least worth a try. If it does not work I'll just buy some more legs!

I think the legs could work well if you went with a more dynamic pose. For example, torso twisted slightly to the right, left arm fully extented to the front (stabby like), shield arm tucked, head following the stab. Maybe that would look better than a static Michael Jackson "up on toes" look

This is Sparta... A New Project... @ 2012/01/08 07:27:35

I see what you're saying, its his toes that are the issue. cutting the legs might help a bit, but you might also have to fix his toes. Or do some creative basing.

I see you're already working on the model, so I'll wait patiently for the update!

Spoiler:

Thanks man, The helmets will be painted exactly like this. Except on Ultramarines not Lego.

Ok now for a small update!

The Sternguard Squad is around 60-75% painted. I tried assembly line painting with these guys but it didn't work.
I found myself spending more time on the details of one model and getting that model ahead of the others.

Anyway here they are.

I'll try to get them finished soon, but knowing all the holiday homework that I haven't even made a dent in these won't be finished any time near soon. I have less than a week of holiday left to do 2 weeks worth of home work. YAY!

Hey man, awesome work!
Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but it would be pretty cool to see a troop transport type vehicle in the form of a trojan horse... just to continue the theme

Hmmm... interesting! I might make a super heavy like that. but as of now I haven't got too much planned for my vehicles!

The German HW was nothing, just a 4 paged basic comprehension booklet. Which had stuff like Verb endings, Nouns and their genders, Different cases and causes.. Sentence types.. Stuff like that.

As for the rest of my Homework.

I have:
Three (YES THREE) Physics projects. All of which require around 1000 words worth of wrighting.
I had to read three 400 or so page books for English. I have read all of them twice within the first two weeks of getting them which was the easy part, but now I have to answer about 50 long answer questions for all of them.
I have to complete two different Maths booklets (about 20 pages each). I'm doing Specialist Maths and Maths Methods and my teachers weren't much help so it's confusing as crap.
And I wasn't given any history homework but I have assigned myself to read the whole text book.

Actually seeing this now it is not as much as I thought it was.

Maybe I actually can get some painting done...............NO IT"S STILL TOO MUCH COMPLETE DO IN 4 DAYS!

I'm Going to Bed now..

I am back!

@Viktor von Domm- That trojan horse dreadnought idea does sound great.. Watch this space.

@J-paint & spudkins- Thanks for tuning in.

@Hmelrose- to you too!

Ok so I somehow managed to finish that home work, but as a reward I got even more Homework! YAY!

School has been killing me lately and I've hardly had any spare time. Which is sad considering I just bought a new airbrush.

Sorry for bury pics!

This bury pic makes for great NMM inspiration.

I have only just tested this out on a few bits and pieces but I can already see it is worth every cent.

Most of the work on the warhound below is done with an airbrush. I have just touched it up in a few places with a brush. Bear in mind it's still WIP.

Hopefully I'll have some more free time soon to experiment more with my airbrush.

Until then.

Ooh Diorama! Nice! What did you use for the rock? I know you've got the egg shells, but what are the larger pieces?

Just a Quick Update

I'm finally starting to use the Spartan crests I bought from secret weapon a while ago.

I've added one to this Sternguard Sergeant. Sorry for the bad pics! I had to set up the camera really quickly.

That's all for now, I'm still bogged down by homework so don't expect an update soon.

Thanks for looking!

Oh, and If you haven't already checked this out please do.

Just a quick update...

I made a Counts as Pedro Kantor today.

I'm not 100% happy with the cape but I'll see how it looks painted up.

As you can see in the pics below he is slightly biggerised.

WIP pic.

Also today I picked up an item I won on ebay for $12.50.
A bargain?
I prettied him up a little too.

Hope you guys and gals like them.

Until next time...

very nice update! seems you have some time after all these homeworks again...

one thing i only now came to see on your earlier update... the spartan crest... when using that i would file off the default crest the marine comes with... now in the very close up version you see a spot where it looks a bit fishy...

the new minis look very good... the across crest looks good with the helm as is...

the scope of yon pedro is a bit much on the stormbolter for my liking, but that´s just personal preferrence i guess... the added armor and the sculpted cape look very cool!

your new aquired mini tho i have only one problem... maybe it is the angle but the boltpistol looks a bit to flimsy for this guy...i suspect it is an IG boltpistol?

anyways...welcome back^^

Thanks for the comments as always Vik.

You have no idea how little time I get for the hobby with homework and all my other commitments it's probably Max 4 hours a week.

I see what you are saying with that crest. I will try shaving off the original crests next time.

As for the scope... I like it! But thanks for the other compliments.

and as for the bolt pistol (it's a scout one BTW). I wanted something different, I know it is a little small BUT I LIKE IT!

I have also just added a scope to it too...

LOL!

Anyway...

Update time.

So there is this tournament coming up on the 28th of April. I have to field a 1750pts force if I want to come along (fully painted and all).
The problem is that I don't have that much painted to the standard that I want. The good thing is that I'm on holidays and pretty much all of the next week I have nothing else to do.
I have got all my Homework out of the way. I learnt from last time.
After that I also have a couple weeks to finish it. 23 Days in total!
So can I finish the army in time?
I Intend to!

Here is the list I'm taking.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/432103.page

Red = Not Stated
Orange = In Progress
Green = Finished

1750pts

(HQ)Pedro Kantor-175pts (Built + Basecoat)

(Elite) Sternguard squad- 5 men, 4 with combimeltas, Melta bombs -160pts (Built and about 85% PAinted)

(Troop)Scout Squad- 4 with sniper rifles, 1 with missile launcher, Melta bombs - 90pts (Finished but needs some retouching).

(Troop)Tactical squad- 10 men, 1 with Missile launcher, 1 with flamer, Melta bombs, -175pts (Not Started)

(Heavy Support) Devastator Squad- 5 men, 4 Missile launchers 150pts (Sarge finished, 4 squad members Built + Basecoated)

(Heavy Support) Predator- autocannon, lascannons- 120pts (Not Started yet)

(Heavy Support) Predator- autocannon, lascannons- 120pts (Not Started yet)

(Troop) Tactical squad- 10 men, 1 with Missile launcher, 1 with flamer Rhino -205pts (Not Started yet) (Finished)

(Dedicated Transport) Razorback with TL-Heavy bolters (Sternguard Squad)- 40pts (Not Started yet)

(Elite) Sternguard squad- 5 men, 4 with combi-meltas, Razorback with TL- Assault Cannon, ,-220pts (Not Started yet)

Rhino for (tactical squad)-35pts (Finished)

(Elite) Dreadnought- Twin Linked Auto cannons, Extra Armour- 140pts (Built and about 80% Painted)

(Fast Attack) Land Speeder Tornado- Multi-Melta -60pts (Haven't even bought yet)

(Fast Attack) Land Speeder Tornado- Multi-Melta -60pts (Haven't even bought yet)

There is a lot of Red on there but I think that will soon start changing.
I have an Air Brush so the tanks shouldn't take too long and I can employ assembly line painting on the rank and file miniatures.

Here is my progress so far...

Last Saturday I stripped a whole lot of minis. I used full strength Dettol if anyone is interested.
I also find that dipping metal minis in mineral turpentine after a dettol dunk helps get rid of all the sludgy mess you usually get when using dettol. DON'T USE THIS ON PLASTIC MINIS THOUGH.

I was almost tempted to paint some of my brothers old Eldar he gave me...but I was determined to remain on task,.
Most Important of all those minis were the two Missile launcher marines and the missile one launcher bit.

I needed them to make this.
My new Devastator Squad.

Individual pics.
Spoiler:

I call this guy itchy butt marine.

But he's only reloading.

This one is called the the Kneeling Navigator.

I couldn't do too much about these two static marines without wasting precious time. So I threw on a helmet crest and called it a day.

And now the Sergeant.

After an Airbrush Prime. (WAY BETTER THAN ANY OTHER PRIMING TECHNIQUE IMHO).

Airbrushed all the armour VGC Imperial Blue. (BAD PICS) The blue is much lighter IRL.

I was going to go assembly line painting from there but I took a liking to the Sergeant and (wasting precious time) I decided to give him some more attention.
He took about 1.5 Hours painting time. Record breaking time for me but I need to move faster. And he is still not really at the standard I want.
He was originally going to have a converted bolter but I thought It didn't really work. Just in case you notice he has a different bolter in some of the pics.

WIPS
Spoiler:

Expect many more updates up until the deadline....

Unless I get...

Hey look! It's a pretty bird.

Thanks bigfish. It's funny you should say that because That's the only thing I managed to finish today. My second Rhino.

Before I show my Rhino here is a picture of my Devastator Sergeant with better lighting and a touch of Photoshop.

I didn't get too much done today. I spent the whole day cleaning Today.
I only had 2 hours to finish the rhino and do some more work on my Sternguard which are almost done.

Here is the Rhino I did today (left) next to the other finished Rhino(right). They've swapped sides in the second pic.

New Rhino Alone.

Not happy with the U but I'll have to touch it up later.

So I can tick another Rhino of the list.

I'm off to do some more painting.

Update

inmygravenimage wrote:Love the weathering on the front, and clever use of back plate as a grill. Kudos.

Thanks Graven, the Weathering is first a Drybrush of a 4:1:1 VGC Cold Grey, VGC Charred Brown and VGC Black followed by a second successive Dry brush with 1 extra part of VGC Cold Grey and 1 extra part VGC Charred Brown added to the previous mix.
I know you didn't ask, but I needed to write that down somewhere so i wont forget.
And as for the clever use of back plate as a grill; I wouldn't say it's that clever.
On my first Razorback I ever did I glued the back hatch the wrong way around I was going to fix it but then I realised that I actually preferred that look, I've been doing it ever since.

Meet Distraction Number One: Isn't he cute.
I call Him Rover.

I was just inspired to create this today but he took way longer that I thought he would.
Then just after I finished him and was about to get stuck into painting my Sternguard and Devastators I has 'forced' to go on a family outing.

Anyway here are some more pics.

He does have a functional use. this guy can now be a WYSIWYG Vulkan counts as.

and...

This Chaplain can now pass as Cassius.

So today was a loss, I didn't really get anything done at all.

Unless....

Red = Not Stated
Orange = In Progress
Green = Finished

(HQ) Pedro Kantor-175pts (75% Done)

(Elite) Sternguard squad- 5 men, 4 with Combi-Meltas, Melta bombs -150pts (90% Done)

(Troop)Scout Squad- 4 with sniper rifles, 1 with missile launcher, Melta bombs - 90pts (Finished but needs retouching)

(Troop)Tactical squad- 10, 1 with Missile launcher, 1 with Meltagun, Melta bombs -180pts (Not Started Yet)

(Heavy Support) Devastator Squad- 5 men, 4 Missile launchers 150pts (60% Done)

(Heavy Support) Predator- autocannon, lascannons- 120pts (Not Started Yet)

(Heavy Support) Predator- autocannon, lascannons- 120pts (Not Started Yet)

(Troop) Tactical squad- 10 men, 1 with Missile launcher, 1 with Meltagun, Melta Bombs- Rhino -215pts (Not Started Yet) (Finished)

(Dedicated Transport) Razorback with TL-Heavy bolters (Sternguard Squad)- 40pts (Built)

(Elite) Sternguard squad- 5 men, Sergeant with Power Fist 4 with Combi-Meltas, Melta bombs,-Razorback with TL Heavy Bolters- 215pts (Not Started Yet) (Built)

(Dedicated Transport) Rhino for (tactical squad)-35pts (Finished)

(Elite) Dreadnought- Twin Linked Auto cannons-125pts (80% Done)

(HQ) Chaplain Cassius- 125pts (Finished)

(Upgrade) Hunter Killer Missile on one of the Razorbacks- 10pts (built)

This will decrease my army's effectiveness but it will help me get finished in time.

So I did two Speeders Today.
I also got a few things closer to being finished. So not a total loss today.

I'm going to get some more painting in before I go to bed!

I didn't get too much done over the Easter period.
Too much Chocolate made me fat and lazy!

Only these two Sternguard were completed.

Bad pic, I had to Photoshop it and it still looks bad! I'll get better pics when I show the whole squad. (which is almost done).

This is how I paint my Elites Backpacks.

Something cool did happen yesterday though. My Brother T-bone came up to me yesterday and told me he wanted to get into 40k again. Everyone be nice to him he's only little (and pretty young too). He started with an Ork army about a year ago, but he never was really interested. Now I said If he wanted to start again he had to choose an army he wouldn't loose interest in as easily. I started to tell him all the basic Fluff so he could have a better idea of which army to choose, we got stuck when I told him about how Space Marines ate their own recycled poo in paste form (I was trying to get him to start Necrons) but he was adamant. He wanted some Salamanders! He really liked their scheme. He liked CSM for a while but he got scared when he saw the daemons.

So I gave him one of my Space Marines and he got building, under my watchful eye. I let him choose any bits he wanted (except for the ones I really needed).

Here it is.

I even thought him to drill out the barrels.

Not so bad if I say so myself!

We're going to paint it today. Let's see if he has what it takes!

And Today I'm hoping to get more of my tanks done. I'm getting bored of painting Infantry!

Didn't get too much done Today.

I only built both Razorbacks and am halfway through the predators.
Not much by way of painting anyway...

Announcement

I want to my FLGS 'Realm of Legends' yesterday and... sadly it's closing down. Half their stock was gone so I didn't buy anything.
What is even more sad is that this store was hosting the tournament I was going to go to.
I had only just found the place too, I'd just been to it twice before. It was a really nice store...
They said they had their lease pulled out from under them, they were told they just had a week to leave.
They might reopen but chances are slim.
Very Sad. So does anyone know any good FLGS around the South Eastern Suburbs of melbourne?

And I was looking forward to that Tournament...

Well, I'm free. I don't have to finish the army... I will but just not as quickly.

I'm going to work on my Orks and finish all my Orky terrain or maybe try out some schemes on those Eldar I stripped, or I can start that IG army I wanted...

Watch this space...

Just out interest, where in Australia are you situated? If it is in VIC, Do you know any good FLGS around here?

That's a actually great... The current webstore I'm using does not sell LOTR minis...

Me too. I'd only just found that too...

Sadly that was the store that closed down...

Firstly...I must say.

This is AWESOME (I MUST HAVE) putting my chaplain count to 4. Too bad I'm low on cash atm...

This guy is really cool too.

http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/New_Stuff/ASTERION_MOLOC_AND_IVANUS_ENKOMI_OF_THE_MINOTAURS.html

And secondly..since there is no longer a tournament to inspire me I will set myself another painting goal.
Golden Daemon...which is in September here.
I'm in young bloods so the competition will not be as tough as it could be, but that does not mean wont have some really tough competition.
I have never actually spent more then 5-7 hours painting one mini.. I usually just like to paint things as quickly as I can.
So it will be interesting to see what happens when I pull out all stops on a mini.
Actually I plan on entering three minis, one from 40k one from Warhammer and one from LOTR.
I will practice new techniques I will be planning to use on the minis on some practice figs.
This is more about learning new techniques than actually winning, so I'll have won even before I send out the mini.

I'm planning on using these three minis.

For 40K.

For Warhammer.

For LOTR

I'm all in planning mode at the moment, I'm getting together awesome pics of these minis. Trying to think how I'll put my on spin on it....

And I'll soon be testing out some new techniques on some practice minis...

I'll see you all hopefully soon. Can't say how much free time I'll have in the coming days. Forecast now doesn't look that great.

Oh, thread how I have neglected thee...

Oh, how the strains of homework and exams have impeded any possible progress hobbywise.
Why did I select all of the difficult subjects!

It's all better for now though.
I have no school for 2 weeks. Holidays, YEAH!
Also, surprisingly, I've not much holiday homework to do.
Therefore we should see at least a couple updates on here in that time.

I'll start by posting a small update now.

Pics first!

I love this mini! He's posed as if he's about to Backhand someone.
Yeah, I know mould lines and un-drilled barrel...I will see to it later.
I've wanted to do that for ages with a Powerfist!

I imagine it'd leave a mark a little bit worse than this.
Spoiler:

He'll be part of a Deathwatch team I'm making just for a little variety.
I don't care what fluff dictates I'll be painting them in full chapter colours except for the pad.
I just want a little break from the norm.

Now, as for my proposed Golden Daemon entries, time and my wallet say that I can not buy and paint all the minis I originally planned.
Also I just realised I am no longer considered a Young Blood it's only under 14s now or something crazy like that. Used to be under 18s.
I now plan on focusing all my energy on just one mini. a A mini I already own...twice (in metal). The big man himself Marneus Calgar.
I will paint one of them as many times as I can until I feel confident (stripping it after each completed stage), then I will paint the other for real using all the knowledge I've gained from painting the first one.
I will post my progress routinely on this blog and hopefully all of you Dakkanoughts can help me progress my painting skills.
It might take a while to get up to a level that I think is Golden Daemon worthy but even if I have to enter Calgar into a Golden Daemon 3 years down the track I will still be happy.
It's a brilliant brilliant plan!

I shall start tommorow...Time permitting.

That's all for now!
Thanks for looking

fist off, that pic in the spoiler isnt working for me... tried to copy the link but still didnt show up.

second.... epic thread!! really love that backhand marine sergeant
btw... fluff says that every marine IN the deathwatch will have black armor... BUT they also have the deathwatch pauldron on the left shoulder and their original chapter's pauldron on their right shoulder...
when they return from the deathwatch and join their own chapters ranks again, they will take on their original colors, put their chapters pauldron back on the left shoulder, where it belongs, and place the Deathwatch shoulderpad on the right shoulder as a trophy/reminder/symbol of their service in the deathwatch.

so with your plans your spot-on fluff wise

Oh, so you saw those already, hmm?

On a serious note, I think you need to move up the bolt pistol drum mag. It looks a bit disconnected down there.

Good to have you back!
