This blog will document the birth of my chaos legion. I am a fairly new hobbyist and 40k player, only been into it for about a half a year and this is my first army. So any feedback is appreciated!
Over the last half year I've been collecting Chaos Space Marines, and I've amassed a large collection of unassembled, unpainted models. So far this is my estimated final product in terms of what I want to build:
HQ:
2 Daemon Princes for now, possibly some other stuff like Abaddon later.
Troops:
1. 30 regular CSM (they all pretty much look the same... these guys are my cannon fodder)
2. 16 Bionically enchanced CSM, to be played as Plague Marines
3. 20 Skull-themed bezerkers (Khorne bezerkers except modelled cooler and they're chaos undivided)
4. 5 Chosen CSM with an infiltrator theme, look like special forces
5. 5 Ornate and badass looking close combat chosen CSM or aspiring champions
6. 5 terminators, magnetized
7. 8 Noise Marines
8. 10 Raptors
9. 10 Chaos Bikers
10. Some extra missile/autocannon Havocs, interminged with the other troops with magnets
Vehicles:
1. 3 Chaos Dreadnoughts
2. 8 Rhinos
3. 2 Defilers
4. 2 Predators
5. 2 Vindicators (the tanks will be convertible from pred to vindi)
6. 3 Land Raiders
It's quite a lot of dudes and I want to do a lot of scratchbuilding and customization, so this project might last for awhile. After checking out all the cool painting techniques and painters here on Dakka and other places, I think I've decided on some basic painting strategies I want to use. The setting for my army will be on Cadia, sometime during Abaddon's thirteenth black crusade, and the whole army will have a weathered and battle damaged look. I also want them to look very nasty and chaotic, like a mixture of the Reavers from the movie Serenity mixed with a baroque style like the necromongers in Chronicles of Riddick. The Dark-mechanicus themed troops will sort of look like the Borg.
So to achieve this I've purchased an airbrush, weathering powders, the best metallic paints (VMA metallics and liquid gold), and I plan to try out using oil paints for washes. I also want to do some OSL (but not a lot, really) and put my troops on nice bases. I've also gotten some LED's and plan to light up my vehicles. I'm still a beginner at this stuff although I have traditional artwork experience, such as oil painting and drawing and design and the like. I just love creating something beautiful and then playing games with it!
If anyone sees something in here that they would like to know how to do, feel free to comment or PM me I'll try to answer you and if enough people express interest maybe I will make a small tutorial about it. Hopefully this blog will help me make progress and document that progress too.

The green stuff work is aided by a "Tube Tool" from Masq miniatures. It is my best friend seriously. It helps me to create Obliterators starting up from a wire frame. Because I hate those GW obliterator models. They all look like they are taking a dump. And they weapons they are modelled with are not even the weapons they actually have.
Deathly Angel wrote:I really like these!! Love the concept and great work with your converting, though IMHO wouldn't this theme work better for Iron Warriors?
It would work pretty well with Iron Warriors, particularly those Bionic-counts-as-plague marines. But then I feel like I have to invest in getting all their shoulder pads, their viking helmets and do their chevron paint scheme (not really a fan of it), and I also want to include some Noise Marines in my army, and possibly Abaddon once I have a big enough force built. I think that black legion is the only thing with a big enough scope for all the stuff I want to do, you'll see when I post more stuff up. Although I am a fan of Iron Warriors. This this guy here on dakka is a big inspiration:
they look amazing, on a side note, on the third image of your machanicus marines, the marine in the middle, to me his head looks like mr popo from Dragon Ball Z....
can't wait to see what imaginative colour scheme you come up with
Typhon
Your greenstuff work is insane! The tubes, the flesh and essentially everything is perfect. In addition the conversions are unique, creative and well thought out. Those Obilterators are way better than the official models. Keep up the good work!
Here are the rest of my obliterators (6 total so far), and some skeleton bezerker guys I was working on today (I'm not sure yet what to call them). They still need to be cleaned up a bit... sometimes you only notice when you take the pictures of them!
Here are my 30 CSM, they are pretty much cannon fodder so they all look the same. I'm leaving the bolter off for now so I can paint them easier.
My Obliterators:
And my Bezerkers! I tried doing more drapery today and my champion came out good, but I think I was sabotaged by bad greenstuff there are too many little chunks in it. The other guy is supposed to be like a cult leader a little bit like a chaplain. I ordered a new 36 inch greenstuff log today.
And for those who are curious, this is how my daemon prince and the obliterators start life, built up around a wire frame and hot glue.
Very interesting work and that's a compliment I seldom ever give. I can only hope two things for you on this army because I am very interested in it. First I hope you get some resin bases as they will really spruce up the models themselves. Secondly I hope the paint job lives up too the conversions as these are nice and I would love too see them done true justice because if you do then you will have one outstanding army on your hands. I take it the coils are done from a GS mould?

Thanks man,
Yeah the coils are from the tube tool. It was worth every penny but I like using copper wires too. I also use the instamold for some things and sculpt freehand some others. I do plan on putting work into the bases, however I think I'm going to experiment with what I can do with cheaper materials first (i need like 80+ bases). I want to make them look like they are on Cadia, so that way I can put a lot of different extra elements like snow and dried grass and battle debris and cracked concrete, I want to experiment with using corkboard or some similar material. Might mix in a few nice urban bases if I find something I like.
I am new to painting minis but I have experience with traditional art, like sculpture and painting. So hopefully that will help me. But I got an airbrush and I'm looking into the different tutorials I can find online to help me adjust to the medium. One way of putting it is, the paintjob won't be the type that I spend 20 minutes on each model, I just have too much stuff. I need to figure out an assembly line strategy. But they will have all the cool stuff like glowing eyes, glowing (OSL) swords and weapons, and convincing weathering and battle damage.
LoneLictor wrote:Keep up the good work. Can you give me a link to a website that sells the tube tool you have? Also, I love the Berzerker with the Skull Chest.
http://www.masq-mini.com, you might want to look for a US retailer but I could not find one when I looked. Of course once you get it there's no going back, you will end up making a lot of tubes.
speedfreek wrote:I think this looks really cool, but you should fix the feet made of sprue so they don't look like.. well, sprue...
Yeah, that was the first guy I did. maybe I will go back to him later when I clean everybody up. The other guys have feet mostly made of smoke launchers. Although, never underestimate the value of some heavy weathering and paint job!
Weird and wonderful! I love the way your work coils and loops around itself. A great take on chaos -- very dark and industrial. I'm looking forward to watching this project continue to take shape.
risewiththefallen wrote:those zerkers are going to be awsome
Thanks. I'm still not sold on that skull head for the special guy carrying the staff. It's a little bit cartoony looking, I might just change it to be the same as my champions head, a grinning skull. The shoulder pads I got with that bit were good, but probably too expensive for what I get.
I'm working on Noise marines today, and I kind of was avoiding it, but I found out a great way to do the helmet so I'm actually pretty excited now, I'll try to get some done today and pics up. I hate those metal ones you get with the kit.
Even though I'm black legion Slaanesh is the only ruinous power that has a special part to play in my army. I've got a forgeworld dreadnought with blastmaster and I'm working up to doing that later
Automatically Appended Next Post: Hi everyone, more progress!
Today I finished my Noise Marinesn (although they still need some shoulder pads). It was a pain in the butt working on that metal, but I got everything pinned. In the pics their blasters are not glued on they are just being held up by pins, that way it's easier to paint them when the time comes. I made their heads by taking the vent off a backpack, taking a regular helmet and smoothing out the top, and then replacing the grill with a bigger one... that way you get the 'screaming face' effect. and I added more wires coming out of their helmet because you know they need more wires... to do stuff.
I made eleven, with a champion who has a doom siren, 6 blasters, and one blastmaster, and 4 bolter guys for cannon fodder but they still look like noise guys.
enjoy!
And I fixed up two more skull bezerker guys. That green stuff skull on the shoulder pad is hand sculpted by me.
Inquisitor Earl wrote:Best Obliterators ever. That tube tool is amazing. Creates a very Gigeresque feel which is perfect. Going to have to get one.
Thanks! You are putting the pressure on for me to do a good paintjob now.
Yeah the tool is great, and if you experiment with it you can get a great variety of tubes from it. It really is worth every penny but only if you are doing Admech or something similar.
If you like Giger do you know the artist Kris Kuksi? Most awesome gothic miniature art ever. I was lucky enough to go see his show in NYC too.

Getting scared of some miniature painted plastic?
That's what chaos should be! It's got to give people the chills. That really helps people enjoy the game and be immersed in it. I have a far way to go before I can achieve that however.
Everything in this army is amazing. You are practically a god of greenstuff. The Obilterators, Noise Marines and Khorne Berzerkers are all amazingly well down.
LoneLictor wrote:Everything in this army is amazing. You are practically a god of greenstuff. The Obilterators, Noise Marines and Khorne Berzerkers are all amazingly well down.
This guy is almost as good with greenstuff/sculpting as you and is an extremely professional painter. Also, I can't wait to see your army painted.
Thanks I appreciate. You are tempting me to spend more time on my Noise Marines! That guy Whitehead has a cool style and I really like what he was doing with some of those helmets that are resculpted, he was thinking the same way as me. But for my army I want a more industrial look. Because they are like rockstars. Except instead of being an 80's hair band, they are a 90's industrial Nine inch nails kind of thing. I want to tone down the bright pink/purple of slaanesh maybe to a dark, deep black purple, add more speakers and wires, plenty of black because they are fighting with the black legion, plenty of weathering because they are on campaign. I'm still conflicted about their backpacks. I don't want to buy a bunch of those metal ones (I would need ten), but I would like to do something special with them, but I don't want to spend a lot of extra time sculpting because I worry about getting bogged down in one place.
Hey guys, been hard at work today setting up my airbrush station. I did one little guy and one obliterator... check out how they came out. Its just a start, and I will definitely experiment more. I really love the airbrush though! And thanks to everyone at Dakka who are putting out tutorials and stuff it really helps. Special thanks to Major Tom and Nuclealosaur.
These guys are still a little bit WIP, they need basing and a few more details (like his bolter), and some weathering powder.
Any suggestions or things I didn't catch? Any critiques or suggestions are welcome. What do you think of my basic scheme? I'm trying to avoid gold and keep it as black as I can, Black Legion, but there are all kinds of colors mixed into the black, rusty colors and heavy contrast between light and dark (from spraying the airbrush) and the red OSL adds color to everything. Plus there are blues and I try to put a golden yellow point in there somewhere, to make a triad color scheme.
Sweet mother of god, those eyes/lights are amazing! It looks like you put tiny LEDs in their sockets! Both of those guys look amazing, though its clear they're WIP! I can't wait to see them finished.
LoneLictor wrote:Sweet mother of god, those eyes/lights are amazing! It looks like you put tiny LEDs in their sockets! Both of those guys look amazing, though its clear they're WIP! I can't wait to see them finished.
Thanks guys. I'm just waiting to get the rest of my basing stuff in the mail. I want it to look like these guys are walking across the battlefield, just wading in the ashes, filth and desolation. You know like cracked concrete, burned carcasses, razor wire, puddles of mud and ash, burned out buildings. That way these loyalist scum will know the glory of CHAOS!
Thanks for the compliments on the OSL. I think I will expand further into doing some muzzle flash on my bolters and lighting up the figure from the flash.
I'm going to try out making some plaster, I'm just going to pour it out so it forms these thin sheets so that when I take it out and break it up a bit it looks like cracked concrete. But I'm waiting for my water effects and dry/burned grass flock.
Thanks guys. Like I said I'm a fan of Iron Warriors too but I end up doing Black Legion because I just love chaos so much, I love Noise Marines and Bezerkers and Bionic guys, and this is my first army, so I have to build them all and practice on them all. Also I like black. Although after painting these guys it is starting to look like painting my army might take awhile to finish. In any case I might do a few more experiments, just to see what I'm going to need and figure out what I'm aiming for, and then wait to paint the whole gang in one pass. It is the most efficient way for time use and saving my airbrush paint to paint a lot of guys at once.
That being said I think I need to shoot for building a smaller version of my whole army first. I have the parts for two defilers at home sitting here, and they will be like the Oblits except biggerized and more killy and industrial. And they will have actual LED's as well as/instead of the OSL. And three Land Raiders and like ten rhinos/tanks... it is a lot of crap.
I saw your oblit in the showcase forum and followed the link to your profile, where I found this thread. Glad I did! These conversions are simply stunning! I saw someone commented on how silly the GW oblits look and I totally agree. You've done the obliterator cult justice, man. Keep up the good work. Definitley looking forward to seeing this army progress!
Hey what's up, progress is being made. Today and yesterday I managed to finish up another squad of those bezerkers, and now I have two full squads. Finished my Obliterator Prince. And I made a squad of 5 chosen space marine infiltrators w/ plasmaguns, but really they can have any gun they want because they are all magnetized at the wrist.
I still think I want to paint my army all in one go, but I'm going to continue to experiment some more. I'm thinking right now that all I have to do is paint up my oblits, some of my troops that I've finished, my daemon prince and some rhinos and make my defiler, and I should be good to go in terms of having a playable army.... and I'm pretty anxious to have one I can play with. It's possible I might even finish it in the next two weeks, if I keep my progress up, and then I'll have the pressure off to finish an army and I can be more creative and take my time with the rest of my guys.
Anyhow here is how it's progressing. My Obliterator prince. And you can see from the scale he is quite big.
My chosen. I had fun putting more robes on these guys, they are supposed to be all special forces like. They all got nurgle helmets and hoods, so I can have fun doing OSL with the inside of their hood all lit up Oh and their plasmaguns. But besides that they are going to be mostly black and I may even put some vegetation on them or camoflage stuff like they have ghillie suits on. Their job will be to infiltrate and plasma people. I know, its not the best way to use them, but it's cool. So there. They could also have a ride and outflank if they want to.
And finally my bezerkers, they all got extra spikey shoulder pads and lots of them are armed to the teeth with two chainblades. And I made this power weapon for my one champion you can see, I call it a Power Brand and it's pokey, and a power weapon, and it's got 8 blades which is the sacred number of Chaos so that when it makes a wound it forms the star of chaos in it's victim. When I paint it up it will be glowing white hot with energy at the tip and more reddish like a piece of molten steel, and it will be lighting up the champion with a reddish glow. What do you guys think? I think I might want to make more power weapons like this.
Alright, I am officially jealous of you. You're a better modeler than me, you're a better painter than me and you're more creative than me. The Berzerkers look great. They look very savage and have actiony poses, in addition to creative conversions. I like the Chosen as well, with their sculpted robes and "Nurgle Champion" heads. And of course, the Obilterator/Daemon Prince is the best of all. I've never seen anything like that pulled off so well. Keep up the good work!

Thanks again dude. Trust me though I've had a lot of practice being creative and I've paid money to be trained in it, so I better be good at it. I'm just applying it to 40k which mostly has to do with how I'm unemployed right now So no jealousy talk please, I'm just here to share info about how I build my army and learn from everybody else, because that's how everyone improves. And trust me I'm not making up everything I do, I'm copying what I see that's cool and mixing it with my own ideas. Especially with those conversions, I've picked up a lot of stuff from here on dakka and elsewhere.
So this is my update after several months... I've gotten some time to finish my army and I've got the core army painted, as well as another project almost completed... so I'm starting to put everything up on the blog. It was sort of overwhelming to get everything painted at first and I just wanted everything painted, but now I will take it one unit at a time and I'm trying to increase my skills. I still might need to go back and touch up and redo all these guys, but one thing at a time. I'm taking the best pictures I can and putting them up little by little.
Chaos codex coming soon... Please make it true and make it come sooner!
Aside from that, I've done a Minotaurs army for myself and my brother to share, it's counts-as blood angels so it should be fun to play, hopefully getting a blog up for that project too. My next project is to refine my obliterator-making process and put them up for sale on ebay and dakka, unpainted or painted. Hopefully they will be popular in the new codex and not nerfed. I wouldn't be sad to have nine instead of 6 anyway...
Here are the first two oblits uploaded to the dakka gallery:
Thanks man, yeah the dark paint job was a challenge for me. I still think I might go back and edge highlight this stuff, I've done airbrush zenith highlighting but it could be more defined in terms of the details. That being said I don't like sharp edge highlights on anything and this army needs to be BLACK. The OSL is also something I'm learning, and the models need that color and light.
My philosophy is to use every trick in the book to make my mini's look cinematic and expressive, not the product of some OCD. Not that other strategies don't have their place...
and Here is the first Rhino, it has an LED. I used an amber one for an eye-of sauron like effect:
Thanks guys! I am to try to put up at least one or two pics a night now, because I'd rather be painting I still have a huge pile of stuff to do.
This is my bezerkers, there are 20 of them in all. I'm feeling kind of meh about their paintjobs, especially in a camera but they still look cool on the tabletop. Relatively simple but effective. I really need to experiment with more gore.
Thanks Lonelictor. Yeah I'm pretty happy with the skull champions. I use the one guy with the plasma pistol as Kharn sometimes. But so far he's failing me in combat, the guy with the "Brand of Chaos" has been luckier... he survived against a GK razorspam list, multiple assaults against him and and smacked a rifleman dread in the face to tie the game for me
Yes, his nipple-spike skull eyes have been popular at the club as well. But they have yet to be proven in hand-to-hand combat.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Hey guys, I thought for a change I would post my newest creation I've spent all night working on. His name is Vathmortul and I'm really really fond of this guy. Actually I'm in love. I tried out some gore techniques on him hope you guys like.
Amazing stuff! Wouldn't want to have to face that on the battlefield It's hard to pick a favourite, but the Defiler and Vathmortul really take the cake.
Trying to keep on updating this, but I've got my hands full... doing a grey knights commission and painting a Minotaurs chapter army. Anyway that's not an excuse I know.
KNEEL BEFORE VATHMORTUL! He's glad he's got some love in the Dakka gallery. He is quite vain.
@Lonelictor: yes he is a DP and I have two in my army, I'm working on a greater daemon which is almost complete, and I'm posting my other DP now.
@greatsword: no it's just an optical illusion. Actually I took his leg armor off so he is less armored than GW version
@Killmaimburn: For the red it is a mix of VMA scarlet red in the airbrush, and blood red. Also I'll use some blazing orange sometimes in the center, but it depends if I want a more fiery effect or something, it's good to have a bit of OJ in the center for the 'glowing' effect.
Thanks everyone for the compliments. Your kind words are validating my life right now.
This is my other DP, Aurglun, I painted him up before Vathmortul so he has a crappier paintjob... but good enough for now. I'm really needing to get some proper lighting equipment, at least, to take these photos though.
Spoiler:
Yes that is a blackened corpse by his feet, sorry my camera can't take close up images for those details.
Is that the optional Defiler head from the command tank sprue? I always thought that piece was hideous, but it works so well in this conversion!
Brilliant!

Indeed, honestly I'm still on the fence about it I was even thinking of changing his head. Vathmortul got the OOP Daemon Prince head which is cooler looking. And the new DP plastic heads just suck.
Very impressive stuff mate. I really like the Rhinos and your Chosen. Your Daemon Princes and Obliterators remind me a little of Decepticons from the Transformers movies (which is no bad thing).
I wouldn't change the head at all! I think it's awesome how just a hint of a face can be guessed among all those lenses. I just wanted to point out the contrast between the - normally - not so hot bit and your perfect use of it. Indeed a conversion that is - wait for it - more than the sum of its parts
Thanks man I hadn't thought of that. Shockwave does have a cool looking 'cyclops' head that might inspire me in the future. Also that's easier to model. I could even stick a single LED in there, that would be hardcore.

Yeah, chopping off the horns and mouth was key to making it look better I think. Anyway he's keeping his head for now because I am too busy.
Just found this plog. Incredible stuff, man! Love theme, love the creativity, love the urge to disassemble GW's bits and pieces and reassemble them to meet and match your own fevered visions. Twisted, twisted, twisted.
Hey guys, I finished up these guys and I thought I'd put them up here. I made a few extra and thought I'd sell them if somebody wants one, maybe later they will go on Ebay. Otherwise I just keep them for myself There are some more Khorne-themed guys in there.

Once again, truly stunning stuff, Meade! In addition to looking great, these guys are also truly terrifying, especially the Obliterators. The only thing that keeps bothering me is how these models are really truly beyond the usual (rather bland) aesthetics of the Black Legion. Now I don't know if you have already got some fluff in place, but to me these Marines look as if they had almost left their BL origins behind and become something different alttogether...does that make any sense?
Also, looking at the last batch of Marines, I get a distinct Iron Hands vibe from them, only Iron Hands gone bad. Very bad...
Don't get me wrong, your models are simply fantastic! I only feel that there is so much character to them that they could be a totally independent warband with their own fluff and origin. Their allegiance with the Black Legion might prove to be a kind of creative restriction somewhere along the way...
Well, I don't know how to put it any more succinctly, so I'll just shut up for now. Fantastic work in any case!

No, you have the right idea. I think I've written elsewhere that the reason I do Black Legion is just that in the fluff, they accept other warbands and extra forces to fight with them, kind of like a melting pot of chaos. It's only because I want to experiment a bit and try a little bit of everything, especially Noise Marines that I think are cool. But everyone has a very black, dark paintjob that's in line with the fluff that they paint themselves black. The Black Legion is a big legion anyway, so there should be different warbands within it. The main idea behind mine is that they have closer ties with the dark mechanicus. And obliterators just fight everywhere.
Also, looking at the last batch of Marines, I get a distinct Iron Hands vibe from them, only Iron Hands gone bad. Very bad...
Yeah I did write up some simple fluff for them on the gallery page. The idea is that they've been wounded in battle, and the dark mechanicus 'experimented' on them to restore their bodies and also as a sort of punishment for their failure, so they have revenge issues.
Don't get me wrong, your models are simply fantastic! I only feel that there is so much character to them that they could be a totally independent warband with their own fluff and origin. Their allegiance with the Black Legion might prove to be a kind of creative restriction somewhere along the way...
My idea for now is that as I build up this army, I can eventually switch elements of it to a pure dark mechanicus army. However, my next plan is to build a loyalist Admech Explorator warband, played with grey knights henchmen, that I'm collecting stuff for now. I'd like to do some cool stuff eventually with a dark mechanicus force, but the only problem for now is finding a 'dex to use, because the chaos dex just won't cut it and I can't bring myself to use any loyalists... i know they have the guns, but the rules just don't have that chaos flavor. My defiler seems to be popular so I might expand that theme, and make more evil-demon-insect machines like the 'Shockroaches' servitors from Titanicus. So I'm just waiting and hoping that the new Chaos Legions 'dex lets me do that somehow... otherwise I will be a sad panda. But some of those forgeworld units are good enough to use, like the new decimator engine kitted out with autocannons, I could use those rules.
Arm.chair.general wrote:You have an awesome army, how did you do such wonderful OSL?
airbrush mostly. Honestly though I'm just a beginner at it, but I've found that it helps to keep the flow as low as possible so I don't spray too much, and I use Vallejo model air with thinner medium in it so that it just makes a very thin layer of light. Also I paint back onto it with the brush and make bright white dot in the center, and brighter reflections of the color on the metal.
@ Meade: Thanks a lot for the detailed reply! Dark Mechanicus...I see, that makes a lot of sense!
@ Kepora: Hmm, you know, I never figured the Iron Warriors for a legion obsessed with bionics and augmentation. I always thought that they replaced mutations and lost limbs where necessary., whereas the Iron Hands are truly into augmentation for augmentation's sake, in order to purge the weak human flesh, so to speak. Not unlike the Mechanicus.
Come to think about it, what would happen if an Iron Hands force, in their quest for ever more advanced augmentics, somehow contracted the Obliterator virus? Would they consider it a blessing or a curse? Would they even notice being overwhelmed by it?
Anyway, Meade, that's what comes to mind when looking at those newest models of yours: very evocative, no matter whether they are Black Legion or not...

Yeah I think you are right about this, if you read Storm of Iron and the Ultramarines novels they are not opposed to bionic augmentation, like most marines, but they don't go out of their way to replace parts of themselves, or have beliefs about the weakness of the flesh, which comes from the mechanicus. They are more like Nazis, obsessed with their pure bloodline and their superhuman lineage. And of course siege/logistics experts. But they work with the dark mechanicus and are very friendly with them, as one might imagine. I don't think they would go out of their way to be infected with the obliterator virus, either. In the book they use it to infect an admech acolyte and then turn him against his friends.
Yeah... power cables and cables and tubes of all sorts.... just make everything better.
Well guys, I have to say I'm really being tempted by true scale these days. It's my perfectionist side coming out and a little voice in my brain that says... marines should be bigger.... they look awkward....make them bigger and scarier... What say you all, is it worth it? I'm also considering just investing in some resin casting gear (the machinelike part of my brain tells me to never do any work that can't be leveraged, so while i've got some sculpting skills I rarely use them because it's just not worth it for one guy). I've got a lot of power armor sitting around that I'd have to sell, but then again I can use the heads and I've got quite a bit of terminator legs too. The main thing that keeps me from going there is the tanks..way to much work to convert them all to true scale too. But then again rhinos were never properly in scale with normal space marine armor so maybe I can be cool with that? True scale tanks, mmm. I do know that I want to scratchbuild some larger, scarier daemon machines along the lines of that defiler. And my obliterators are proper scale of course.
Truth is I still have a pile of stuff to get done, but I'm being more and more convinced of doing true scale. At least in the mean time because chaos is begin to grow, when the new codex comes out
Here is the first guy I've been working on tonight. It's a Noise Marine, the Torso is my original sculpt and the final product will have wires comin out of the eyes and some cables and speakers studs and cool stuff. He'll be holding a blastmaster because that's how he rolls.
So here is my plan. I've been looking at the ruleset for Killzone over at www.thecodexproject.com and I figure it would be a great mod to use truescale marines with.... because I could just focus on the marines and doing sculpting, and not have to collect or make so many models, or worry about vehicles. Also I want to work on a mod that pumps up their stats a bit so they are more in line with the 'walking tank' concept of the fluff.
I really love all the different chapters and races in 40k and I pretty much just want to have an army of each, and a nice one, so they will have to be smaller 'kill teams', but of course I will have my chaos army to play normal games with.
Also I'm going to sculpt things like true scale skull shoulder pads. Will take requests too and sell them to people (only greenstuff molded ones for now, I kind of want to see if anyone is interested).
Great idea, Meade! Killteams really are a fantastic creative outlet! They offer all the great things about starting a new army... without all the horrible and tedious things about having to complete a new army Very interested to see where this is going!
KrautScientist wrote:Great idea, Meade! Killteams really are a fantastic creative outlet! They offer all the great things about starting a new army... without all the horrible and tedious things about having to complete a new army Very interested to see where this is going!
Yeah, I have this dream of having a force from each race and with the way I model, that will never happen in normal 40k. This way I can have my hobby and when I play the game I'll get more use out of each model instead of it dying the first turn or my tank getting hung up on a rock. How did games workshop ever think that was fun?
So my first true-scale Noise Marine is mostly done... there is more original sculpts on the shoulder pad that is one chaotic mess of speakers, faces and swirling ornamention. Surround Sound! I think the only thing he needs is more studs and stuff on the backpack and his legs. I made up a killzone list that uses one blastmaster and a noise champ, and the daemonettes. Should be fun once I get these all modelled/painted up. I suppose this is off the topic of this thread now... but then again hopefully these guys will all be usable in my black legion army anyway... he doesn't have the emperors children insignia on him. More of a freelancer.
I ordered some of those chapterhouse truescale kits too, I'm anxious to see those when they arrive. I think next on the list after these Noise Marines will be either some plague marine/bionic types or the bezerkers that I do only in bigger scale. Think I might need to make another blog now...
Thanks everybody. Yeah Zarkin it would be great to play some sisters with this army... and your's is pink! So far I've been playing a lot of grey knights and guard. I think playing Guard makes for some fun games as long as I don't get shot up too much and can't do anything.
I've been running a list that uses 8 Bezerkers with a powerfist champ, 8 plague marines with 2 meltas, a CSM squad of ten with a plasmagun, all in rhinos, and 3 squads of two oblits each, 2 lash princes, and ten lesser daemons and a greater daemon. everybody has icons so the troops advance into cover preferably in the middle and the oblits, and daemons deepstrike in and catch the enemy by surprise or in vulnerable locations. Had a great game against Guard yesterday.
So I've pretty much decided to get into making teams for this 40k mod Killzone, that I think is cool. Just because I love modelling so much different stuff, and I can have games with my friends and some at the club, as a real skirmish game and just create all these different chapters/races and not focus on one thing (I hate focusing on one thing!). Maybe Eventually these teams might evolve into full scale forces, probably for chaos if that happens as I cannibalize some of my Black Legion force to make it truescale.
The Noise Marine squad is coming along nicely, I'm doing a lot of nice sculpting on it. Here are pics, with some shots of the cool speaker-shoulderpads that I sculpted:
I decided to lengthen the shins a little bit, on all except the champ, and they came out a bit rough at times, but I really think it improves the proportions. I see some people lengthening the upper thighs and that is a big no no. With these guys you really have to go back and look at them a few different ways to make sure they are right, and be ready to perform surgery if they are not.
I also got some TS chapterhouse kits in waiting, I think I will probably use these for loyalist chapters since they are cleaner looking. Although I must say they have a skinnier look to them than a converted terminator leg, which is a good and bad thing. I think that for TS chaos modified terminator legs are the way to go. The chapterhouse kits should be fine with some modifications and they are great because it saves a ton of work.
Can't wait to get paint on these Noise Marines... It will be good to do something I can use a lot of bright colors and lighting effects on, I'm a bit tired of painting black atm.
My next Team after that will be some AdMech, working on these guys now too:
So what I did was I clipped off any faces, and replaced them with skull masks, because skulls are AWESOME. Also I want these guys to look like they are walking on the surface of Mars or exploring somewhere hostile. Also there will be a lot of servo skulls too. I might put little orbs of greenstuff in the eyes later, it's a good trick for when you go to paint OSL on them to make them look glowing (can't have recessed stuff glowing because the shadows always get in the way).
I'll be using the Grey Knights codex to represent these guys in Killzone, so the Techmarine model is going to count as an inquisitor, with power armor. That explains the scale issue, as he is a T3 mortal with power armor on. But he is really a Secutor in my team, a heavily armed techpriest devoted to battle. I attached a psycannon to a servo arm but it's not in the pics yet. Oh and one cool tip, I use a 26 gauge wire and took apart an electrical cable, then wrapped the very thin strand of copper around it for that cool cable coming out of his head. That give you really small detailed cable... smaller even than GW kits or anything you can do with hand or tools.
The two techpriests will probably count as crusaders with a power weapon hit and the 3++ save will be their force fields. But Hopefully there will be real rules for these guys eventually in Killzone at least.
The skitarii are wargames factory dudes with backpacks added and hoods of grey stuff. They'll have some bionic weapn implants and limbs here or there.
If anyone wants to suggest or request a cool chapter or race for me to do a killteam for... I'm all ears. So far I want to keep to a lot of Chaos, and Space Marines because I have the bits for Chaos and love chaos, and I love doing True Scale, and I'd like a good mix of good and evil. So I think I will go down a list, One CSM, one SM, and One mortal/xeno team and then repeat.
Next I think will be an Iron Hands team, although I don't really like painting the black I can live with it and they make great opponents for my noise marines (eternal archenemies... they have issues). And of course I love doing the bionics.
Vitruvian XVII wrote:Love true scaling, really great.
Although i have to say i despise those WGF models. Bleurgh.
Yeah I sort of agree, but I had picked up a bunch of them and wanted to use them. Their heads aren't bad though when you chop off the helmet part and add a cloak, the bug eyes make good OSL glowing eyes. I 'm going to have to do more modifications like adding wires, cog bits and bionic limbs and such.
More updates soon I promise, I'm just about done painting those two killteams... they are coming out awesomeness.
Next up will be Iron Hands.
Also I really hope that when the chaos codex comes out there are cultists... thinking about some ways to make some cultists of slaanesh. I really love the ways that chaos use cultists in battle. I mean it's such a shame they aren't represented in the game... considering that chaos space marines are an elite of an elite really... they need bodies to throw at the enemy to clear up minefields and be 'cannon fodder' in general.
@ Rogue Wolves: I think that counts as encouragement
@E. traitoris: Thanks dude
Ok here are the Noise Marines:
I had a lot of fun modelling and painting these guys. The Admech are almost done too, just have a few details more to bang out on them but there is a small preview in these pictures. Next up is iron hands, I'd say they're about 33% modelled as I write this. I'm loving the true scale! I think eventually I'll be tempted to do some true scale 'rhinos' out of landraiders.
They also got some play in a Killzone game so I'm pretty happy. But I think I need to write some rules of my own for the sonic weapons... GW rules are so bland.
Hooooooooooooooleeeeeeeeeeeeeee gak, those Noise Marines are amazing. Like, jaw dropping amazing. My jaw just hit the floor. Doctor says I'll never be able to eat solid food again.
Always been a big fan of your stuff but those Noise Marines are my favourites. Slaanesh is my Chaos god of choice and is rarely done so well in my opinion - both an assault to the senses and an aura of menace and depravity. Do you do your OSL with an airbrush? I'm sure you've answered that before sorry.
The only thing I would have liked to see is a few more hues, I can imagine them covered in blinding, strobing multicoloured lights. But again, it's hard to balance the garishness with menace.

Thanks man! Yeah it's airbrush. It's mostly VMA scarlet red + paint dilution over a white surface (whatevers glowing). It's important because that color in particular is so translucent so the light shines through, bounces off the white and produces a nice glowing red effect without being too pink.

By all means give suggestions. I very well might go back to these guys and fix them up more if I feel like it. The noise blasters came out so well with those OSL tubes on the side I might do something similar for the blastmaster.
I may add more lights, probably turquoise before anything. I would have to add balls of putty to the spots where the lights would be, prime, and OSL. I can definitely see what you are saying. I have to be very careful adding yellow, green, orange to this though because it might just end up looking like 'pretty lights' and I need them to look badass. There is however a lot of orange in the bases (rust), and I might work on the glowing green runes/armor decorations a bit more.
Doctor says I'll never be able to eat solid food again.
I actually had that for a month after my jaw was broke... not a fun experience!
well I don't think you really need any suggestions as they look awesome as it is, but all I could think is that the dark blue/purple armour with the blue-green/teal detailing almost looks Alpha Legion to me and that maybe you could use a couple of different hues like pink to change that feel. But yeah, too many colours and Slaanesh goes from looking sinister to looking cartoonish, and with multicoloured glows they might look like Christmas trees.
I'm working on a big-scale Slaanesh marine so this all interests me a lot. I have to admit I love the old style Noise Marines with their leopard print skins and luminous mohicans but it's definitely hard to keep that aesthetic while looking suitably grimdark.

While that sounds super-painful and I'd rather not think about it for too long, didn't the first Noise Marine (a former Eperor's Children Captain, IIRC) end up with a permanently dislocated jaw due to the surgery that gave him a Doom Siren? Just sayin...

Yup. Eidolon took it upon himself, with Fabius Bile, into making the first steps towards the Noise Marine we know today.

I'm thinking that if I find a way to keep the colors slightly... wrong then it might work out. Maybe using a yellow-greenish color or something on the doom siren parts, and I could definitely put a lot more reddish-pink in there. But I won't use straight up pink, I think part of the reason they are menacing is because there are very little pastel colors. Too much and they would look like an easter egg.
But hey, not all aesthetics have to be grimdark in this game. Whatever your style is dude I would appreciate if it's done well. Like if you want them to look like 80's rock stars, I think that's totally awesome! It might have a bit of a comic element to it as well... or not... you can make anything look menacing i done right... even clowns. Especially clowns.

I read Fulgrim but it's lost for the moment, but yes, some had permanently dislocated jaws, permanently opened eyelids and gashes where their ears were. Also they had enhanced biology based on a xenos species so that they could emit a powerful scream just from their body. Also stretched skin of their victims decorating their armor.... but I couldn't figure out a great way do do that so it's not included yet. Does anyone happen to have any good pics of stretched human skin lying around?
I've been experimenting/playtesting with different sonic weapon rules. Here is my weapon profile so far:
Sonic Blaster 10 pts.
S2 AP4 12" Assault 6, Rending, Pinning*
Pinning is based on a toughness test rather than a leadership test. Any unit hit with a sonic blaster must take this test.
Vitruvian XVII wrote:Spoilered in case of offence:

looking good vits
I think it probably is just smooth when stretched out. I like the pig skin texture though, might be good to have a larger skin trophy like that just hanging off the belt. Just might be tricky to get the eye-holes and mouth in the right place... Maybe later tonight I might try one.
Thanks guys, yeah I see there is one shoulderpad in the GW noise marine kit... might help me.
More updates! First the Adeptus Mechanicus. I chose a white scheme for these guys so I could play around with the weathering, and just for something different. They're an Explorator team. I actually have some vehicles for these guys too when I get around to making them. I play them as GK's and the techmarine model is a secutor that counts as an inquisitor with psycannon and power armor and power fist, so it goes along with my true scale guys.
>
That's all of them. And here is my WIP on Iron Hands:
Any suggestions are welcome. I'm going to add rivets to these guys, and all kinds of accessories and the plan is to go for a very dark, almost black iron color with them. I think I might change the terminator shoulder pads. They probably will have blue glowing eyes. And the guy with horns is actually going to be a minotaur later. You can see the different sizes in the comparison shot, how I bulked up the chapterhouse truescale kits.
FantasyBob wrote:Isn't the toso of the terminator a little small!?
Yeah it's WIP. they will all get bigger feet and the terminator's lower shins are the only thing that's done pretty much. He might be a bit taller in the end because of the feet but he'll be around that size in the end.
THOSE NOISE MARINES OH MY GLOB!
They actually epitomise the warped nature the fluff speaks off and the OSL makes them truly creepy. Such an amazing job. SAVED!

Okay, some updates coming. I had a break before and after 6E came out and now I'm back at it. Finished 30 cultists, 20 daemonettes, aegis defense line with quad gun, chaos Bastion. The pics didn't come out great but w/e... I was just in a rush to get everything pictured, maybe I'll go back to a few and do better pictures of them.
The True-Scale Iron Hands are on hold for the moment, as I am collecting enough men to do an actual army based around them... so I have two armies that fight each other 9natural enemies).
No dark vengeance chosen/hellbrute at the moment. I still haven't decided whether it's worth it to get them, but probably will little by little or as they get cheaper. The plan is to have a mostly mortal, daemon and machine chaos force, with very little power armor and just a few select true-scale power armor. So I'm working on amassing a horde of cultists at the moment, this is the first wave and the second will be forgeworld and pig iron cultists. Also I'm looking at getting some tanks for a guard ally situation.
Here are the cultists: Particular ones I'm proud of are the psycho with the knife, and the one with the heavy stubber firing with muzzle flash and ejecting cartridge, I had to completely resculpt his arms to get the position right. Glory to Chaos!
The cultists are just perfect, nice subtle conversions that make the models unique - I particularly like the added hoods and turbans and the heavy stubber pose modification. The glowing red eyes look great as usual, and I can see that working really well on the forgeworld renegade models.
Looking forward to seeing a group shot with the truscale guys surrounded by swarming hordes of cultists.

Thx dude, that's the plan.
working on the second wave of cultists as we speak... got the forgeworld package today, some pig iron legs and some heads... I'll pobably be satisfied once I have about 60 of them, but as long as I find new source of cultists we are good to go... except I can't bring myself to buy Catachans, the sculpts are just way too awful.
I got myself an M3 Lee model and waiting on the rivetting supplies, but it will be made up as a counts-as Valdor Defender heavy tank with a nest of cultists manning heavy bolters on the inside, and more hanging on to the sides. Like a moving fortress.
here's a little shot of my chaos bastion:
And another sneak peek... when he is done he will be AWESOME.
ok what the emperor do you use to make your tubes/wires/tenticles.. they turn out perfect every time! And that Cthulhu as one wise lictor once said.. is fethin' awesome!
Rogue Wolves wrote: ok what the emperor do you use to make your tubes/wires/tenticles.. they turn out perfect every time! And that Cthulhu as one wise lictor once said.. is fethin' awesome!
The tentaclewiretubes? A tube tool of course! number one question asked in this thread
Cthulu's body is mostly done, but I'm waiting on figuring out a way to do some lightning bolts with OSL coming from his right hand. His base will be water effect, and his feet will be underwater, there will be some ruins sticking out of it... as if he is emerging from the depths of the sea...
I originally was going to use him as fateweaver but after the FAQ he can't give 2+ rerollable saves to CSM's anymore.... therefore he will just be a flying Daemon prince or Lord of Change, depending on the list I use at the time.
The bastion looks great, I really like the style you have used for your chaos cultists - the graffiti and random crude spikes look perfect for a recent uprising that hasn't had the time yet to do all the elaborate engravings and nicely organised trophy racks that GW chaos often involves.
but as long as I find new source of cultists we are good to go... except I can't bring myself to buy Catachans, the sculpts are just way too awful.
I'm currently working with the same parts, interested to see the Pig Iron legs, couldn't tell from the pic if they were well proportioned. Catachans are awful although the command squad parts are of a much higher quality than the basic infantry. Cadians are also not ideal if you ask me (I unfortunately bought a load of them to build into renegades without having really inspected them properly... with their giant hands and feet). If you are using forgeworld renegade torsos and pig iron legs haven't you got a good formula already? I would also look at Victoria Miniature's convict or kilted legs, those could work pretty well. PDH has good results using Empire archer legs. I have seen some amazing renegades that used Elysian parts - Elysians are incredible models with dynamic poses but that's a really expensive way to go. If you want a whole new type of cultist then this thread has some amazing ideas, including one I might steal myself (old metal Catachans with marauder helmets).
Love Cthulu by the way. For lightning I am sure I have seen someone use the plastic lightning that comes with a Star Wars Emperor toy, something like this.
iya iya! You cthulhu looks awsome!!! I love your obi over on page 1 of you blog as well man great usage of that rocking tool... the army as a whole and as individually is beyond awsome actually.... cant wait to see more stuff man- I'll be your cult follower now-subscribe...

It is a good formula, i didn't use pig iron legs yet but I'll put up some pics. But the pig iron and FW stuff is costly when making a horde (I'd like 100+ in the end). That's why it's the second wave, these guys will get a bit more care. The first wave was more experimental. I prefer to work with cheaper stuff and blend it in with the good stuff, and GW cultists are mad cheap now... a little more than a buck each for complete cultists on ebay, and I can cut them up and get different parts out of them. I'll check out that stuff you said too, though. Also I'll probably make use of more wargames factory legs/torsos/heads just because they are cheap as well, and combine them with FW cultist arms.... GW cultist arms, gasmask heads, etc. Some catachan arms here and there might be good for the more mutated guys.
That's cool thread too shame that guy didn't post painted pics, not sure if the my pic does it justice but I mixed some mutations into my own cultist force, mostly it's like a hand turning into a claw or some spines growing out of a back, and dirty red bandages around it, so it looks like the mutation is relatively fresh or caused by proximity to warp energies. So I'm open into mixing a bit more of that into the force. I'm not a nurgle guy right now (i'd like to one day), slaanesh if anything but I like the army to have elements of each chaos god at work in it.
Working on more cultists too, I've got a bunch of stuff finished and ready to take pics.
Haven't really got the light tent rebuilt yet, maybe I'll just buy another off ebay. But I think these pics are good for now, it's visible that certain parts of his skin have different transparent layers of green and pink.
I'm happy with the way the lightning bolt turned out as well. And yes, that is seaweed hanging off him as he is rising from the lost city of R'lyeh...
“The nightmare corpse-city of R'lyeh…was built in measureless eons behind history by the vast, loathsome shapes that seeped down from the dark stars. There lay great Cthulhu and his hordes, hidden in green slimy vaults.”
Thanks man! Yeah I had fun making this guy. He's just a Codex Daemons ally for now, but later on I think I could expand the force with more cthulu-based daemon creations.
Vitruvian XVII wrote: Having looked at it again, man that paint work is awesome! What the hell did you do to it to get that iridescent effect?
I wouldn't say it's full on iridescent (more like an illusion of being iridescent), but it's mainly just complex from different layers of pink, gray-green, purple washes and a bit of blue as well... the way I work is quite random and expressive. A lot of different colors make the surface complex and interesting to look at.
It's also covered with a gloss layer, a bit more color, some water effects in places so it looks as if he's still wet from the ocean, (you can see some of the reflections from the light source). But I had to go over the gloss with a bit of satin varnish, because full gloss gives reflections that make the mini seem out of scale.

glad you liked Cthulu! I'm honored to be a riveteer by deed! I make things dark and weird because that's how they should be, I didn't pick chaos, chaos picked me. In the future I try to branch out a bit more but it's hard with GW changing my codex and all. I'm pretty much selling off the force that I began this blog with little by little and replacing it with something new...
ouch... that must feel akward... like selling your kids... the highly comstomized marines you did... i hope you get something worthwhile out of them...
and who wouldn´t like squidface? he is as classic as you can get for a horror figure...
Well, as long as they go to a good home and nobody mistreats them I don't have a problem with it.
Nah not really. I'm a perfectionist so I like it as I improve to sell off the older stuff and make better newer stuff. I'm not a hoarder type at all. I like the process of building stuff more.
by the way... you totally ignored my remark for a tutorial of your OSL - fu
Oops, no I would like to put some tuts out there in the future, sure. I actually am planning to get the video rig set up to do some battle reports with my brother. The particular subject of OSL, there is better stuff out there than what I can produce IMO. NukeArts (formerly Nuclealosaur) did a great one and also Major Tom wrote an article, and that's where I learned about the technique from... just other people here on Dakka.
I would like to put out some tuts on scratchbuilding obliterators and Daemon Engines, once I get a few more under my belt, and I feel like there's a bit of demand for it. I certainly am open to suggestion.
by the way... congratz... your octagin made frontpage... well deserved mister!
Yeah I saw, thanks!
Working on my Dark Mechanicus zombies today, they're conversions from the wonderful mantic ghouls... I could call them Forge Thralls or Forge Ghouls perhaps.
wicked forge ghouls! very creepy... if they get your usual treatment of glowing eyes... you need to spoiler them... nightmare stuff straight away! the scowls are the true seller with these by the way!... also... the loose flying cables? what are they for? will they be connected soon? or just flying loosly about?
Forge Ghouls I'll call them then, has a nice ring to it.
Viktor von Domm wrote: wicked forge ghouls! very creepy... if they get your usual treatment of glowing eyes... you need to spoiler them... nightmare stuff straight away! the scowls are the true seller with these by the way!... also... the loose flying cables? what are they for? will they be connected soon? or just flying loosly about?
It's a WIP... you can't see in the pic but I knocked off their lower jaw and replaced it with hosing. I just took a pic of their backs because I think that's the coolest part.
Probably won't be glowing eyes on these guys... they are meant to be less sentient, captured imperial citizens that have had their blood and other vital organs (or parts of organs) replaced to be more dead than alive. Kind of like turning them into servitors, except way more evil, it's like a living death where you are suffering all the time, know what is happening, have no free will and are utterly controlled by your master. So naturally their favorite thing is to go into battle where they can enjoy inflicting the same suffering they feel on others, or die and have their own suffering end.
Okay, I figured this time I would put up a more in depth step by step thing on how I'm doing the Forge Ghouls, because some people out there might want to do something similar, who knows? I mean who wouldn't with how good CSM zombies are and how cheap mantic ghouls are? Not to mention if any of you have any good tips/crit please share!
I'm I have to wait until I do the next batch to explain how I do the converting part (didn't take pics), this is just painting now.
Step 1: Prime
Step 2: Airbrush on a mix of .5 VMA mohagany and .5 VMA black, for the tattered robes. When I first started painting black I use blue/grey for color and depth, but now I've changed my mind and I use a dark red black... it looks a lot warmer, and it goes along with a dark mechanicus theme... a very dark, bloody reddish black (since AdMech are red).
Step 3: airbrush on some thinned out GW rotting flesh. Although any whitish-yellow-green would probably work. The idea here is that it's dead flesh, (or flesh with whitish blood-substitute flowing through it). It is slightly green to be complementary with the slight-red color in the robes, it's very subtle (not like red and green christmas colors) but it's a great color combo.
Step 4: Go over the robes with the red-black to re-do the areas that had a bit of overspill from the rotting flesh, and do any spots the airbrush missed.
Step 5: Go over the mechanical parts with GW Tin Bitz, or equivalent. It goes along with the reddish color and it's a good base for more metal paint that will go on later.
Step 6: Soft black wash over everything, the flesh is the most important.
Step 7: Heavily Drybrush (to cover the raised surfaces) Boltgun metal or Gun metal over the metal parts.
Step 8: Use a slightly lighter mixture of the flesh color and go back and highlight the raised upward facing parts.
That's what I've got so far, more later! I need to refine some details/shading and do the bases but these guys are coming along nicely...
on the thrd pic... that guy facing directly the camera... *shudders.... really creepy^^
good step by step... now everything falls into place... you use AB for mini painting.... go figure... now the glowy OSL effects make way more sense... making these with a brush i would have really doubted myself to ever get that done^^
and with these pics you really sold the mantic ghouls for that conversion idea... the poses are excellent fot that use... together with your sculpted scowls...
by the way... those bionic limbs... where are they from?
by the way... those bionic limbs... where are they from?
That's the beauty of it... those were bits that came with the kit! All I did was add a little wire coming out. The only parts added to these guys consist of copper wire, green stuff rolled into hosing and the green stuff hoods. Oh and I forgot the backs were chopped up pieces of little random techy bits mostly from wargames factory soldiers... they give so much extra guns and they have cool techy shapes.
I kept it simple so that if I'm feeling balsy enough I could make like 200 of them... I'm really loving how the hordes of underlings gives an army that feudal touch...
Rogue Wolves wrote: You took that ridiculous spawn kit, and made it actually evil looking! Nice job!
Thanks! It's not really that bad of a kit, the heads do get ridiculous though. I like all the extra bits that come with it. But I used one kit and made 5 spawn (including the one the lord is riding on). The one with a rider counts as a chaos lord riding a juggernaught with the black mace.
wow... these spawns made me step back a bit from my monitor... they look very alive and very threatening!!! you sir certainly have a knack for this kind of thing... dunno if that is good tho
and i had the slight suspicion that you "only" added the GS wires to the ghouls and some odd bitz... so... yeah do 200 minis of these... why stop? and i agree... many footsloggers always lend a feudal feel to the army... and show that life is far overrated^^

Yeah, now I just need some 'lordly' characters, and cut all the (non tru scale) power armour out of the army, and the effect should be complete.
I love the Chaos lord on spawn - I can just imagine him: 'Forward! Charge! No... go forward! Don't chew that... Good grief what's that tentacle for? Oh forget it I'll walk''
All the other Chaos Marines just watching him curiously.

That's why he has the mace, to clobber it when it gets out of line
Here is my new guy. He needs a few more details, let me know what you think... I also want to write some unique fluff for this dark mechanicus force once everything comes together. He is huge! barely fits on a 40mm base. I use him as a counts-as Typhus in games. Some warpsmith counts-as will come later.
the forge ghouls are finished but I might go back and change them a bit to go with this guy, and give everybody tech-city ruins basing since I think it looks better.
And there's a sneak peak of my next project, a counts-as forgefiend/maulerfiend. Still waiting on getting the guns but the arms are magnetized. He will get quite some more details and changes but at the same time I want to keep things simple so I can make more and also sell them painted or unpainted once my designs have a bit more character. The idea is that little by little, I will cast my own bits and combine them with cheaper robogear bits and a few of the good GW bits and sell/share the final design. For people who want a different alternative daemon engine.
This is my favorite thread on Dakka Dakka hands down. Everything about all of your minis are dark gruesome and evil looking. I am really impressed by your dark talents. The only thing that i don't like about it is makes most other chaos armies look tame, including my own.

Dude, thanks for the compliment It's a pretty serious one considering all the cool threads to pick from here... Also my style is pretty grimdark yes, but like I always say I love it about this hobby that there is no right way to do things... I appreciate cartoony/humorous/clean styles as well but I'm not the right guy to do it, but that makes it all the better for me to appreciate the different flavors.
The Dark Mechanicus guy is cool. I think maybe his chainsaw is a bit bright, but the head and robes are great. Can you show him with the ghouls scurrying around his feet?
The spider octopus is awesome, good combination of parts into a coherent looking beast. Something slightly bothers me about the join where the tentacles meet the red shoulder part, maybe either ditching those red bits, or cutting half an inch off the tentacles so they look like they are more attached. The head area looks fantastic, can't really make it all out but lots of cool details like the tiny buzzsaw.
Bruticus wrote: The Dark Mechanicus guy is cool. I think maybe his chainsaw is a bit bright, but the head and robes are great. Can you show him with the ghouls scurrying around his feet?
Yeah, I gave the chainsaw the red/yellow gradation because of the idea that it's one of those painting details that just looks good on the tabletop, and keep in mind it looks a bit brighter in the pic. But I had the same thought, it might look better with a dull molten red glow. When I go back and put final touches on this dude I might attempt that (maybe just using more reds over it).
For the robes I wanted some really matte finish, and the vallejo stuff wasn't doing it for me, so I went out and bought some matte medium that they use for acrylic paintings... it is very matte and great for fabric. A bit tricky to paint with normally though.
I will try to get some size comparison pics later once i get everyone based properly and I might re-work the ghouls. Also I want to do more spider servo skulls that might scurry about him/on him, except they will be spider daemon skulls (because it's dark mechanicus... they must be evil looking).

Your instincts are correct... that is a WIP area. It is a bit troublesome because that area is magnetized so I need to have the tentacles in a place that will also look natural if I replace them with autocannons at the same joint. So it will get a lot more attention around the area of the magnets and cableing to make it seem they are organically attached, however I don't want it to be too complex and I might still ditch the red parts like you suggested. (I mainly need something to make an elbow sort of structure).
I would not want to run into that guy in a dark (or light) ally, although I would definatly steal him from you! He looks great, something I can see in some macabre movie or game.
Finally got my camera reader today... thankfully it works! Don't have much time for posting or other stuff today, getting ready for a tournament tomorrow. But I thought I'd throw this up there:
The maulerfiend is painted now, and looking really sweet. Also I have another hellbrute counts-as ready to be painted, and more forge ghouls to add to the swarm! The plan is for another maulerfiend/forgefiend, and then probably a helldrake counts-as conversion. Good times!
sometimes i am a bit hesitant to open your thread.... you definatly chuck out the stuff of my nightmares are made off... do you watch nightmare on elmstreet for referrence regularly?
the muted tones with those small colorful highlights inbetween are really menacing looking!

Thanks vik,
Actually that's one of those movies I've never seen I've seen a lot of weird and scary films though.
Yeah the forge ghouls are re-done, definitely more muted, more of a chiaroscuro thing going on. Very happy with it. Everything will get proper photos eventually.
Thanks guys, I'll have more pics up soon. I don't use it as a defiler but I did use some defiler parts of course. In most of my games I'll probably just use him as a forgefiend... which is a shame since I have to take off those great tentacles.
Anyway I'm working on a commission now so my daemon engine progress might be slowed... and next item... is definitely a helldrake. The rules for it are just too good not to build one. And I love using the typhus model! He never dies.

the exhaust pipes, and the shin armor pieces plus the feet are plasticard. Also his nail extensions... but besides that it is greenstuff, tubes, wires and bits.
Okay massive updates! Thanks for the comments everybody.
First the finished maulerfiend: the arms are magnetized and will be replaced by the hades autocannons, but haven't gotten around to that yet.
And this is the commission I'm working on, It's a custom chapter loosely based on an owl theme. Still WIP, and suggestions are welcome! the shoulder pads still need fabric and some other details need finishing. Trying to make them look stealthy with the robes, the idea behind these guys are that they are stealthy and night-fighters beyond compare... because of their small numbers they only fight battles where they know they have overwhelming superiority, and their enemies usually never even know they are being hunted until it's too late... therefore the long range weaponry and advanced optical systems.
Here is the whole group... a Hellbrute with multimelta (arms are magnetized), 40 more forge ghouls (getting me to a total of 60), and two Abominations... counts as chaos spawn, converted from Isle of Blood rat ogres. They are pretty much select humans (perhaps astartes or made from astartes geneseed) that have been gene bulked, enhanced, doped and mutated beyond all reason.
And this is one of my forge ghouls that I spent a bit more time on to make him look special (could be a champ I guess).
Biohazard wrote: I knew you would nail the design of those spawn. The rat ogres look great in your force mate. Very creepy.
Thanks! and I wouldn't have done it without getting the idea from your blog and ebaying to see what kind of good ogre bodies I could get. I'm still on the hunt for those chaos warshrine ogres when I get around to it! But not for awhile, I've recently received 4 more conventional spawn bodies to continue in the other style.
The bits used were the dark eldar tentacle arms (talos I think), and necron parts to make the mechanical spine.
Planning to paint them up as if their blood has been replaced with a white fluid, and there's the one that has his guts hanging out revealing a part organic/part cyborg innards. The idea being that to him its just a bit of a scratch

Thanks buddy, and the white fluid ala Bishop idea sounds sweet. Look forward to what you do with the official spawn as well. As for the Warshrine mutants Im thinking I may not actually use them now as Ive just built some Raptors and Im planning some bikes for my FA slot. If youre interested in taking them let me know.

Would be interested in more of a trade as I've spent most of my available funds for now... I've got plenty of spare bikes/raptor parts (and other random stuff besides) if you're willing to trade for them pm me that would be awesome.
The fast attack slot does fill rather quickly... especially when you consider the obligatory helldrake (I'm still having problems figuring how to make one).
You have PM, I have a few ideas for my Heldrake none of which involve a dragon Im thinking a squat brutal looking fighter, something that looks like it would be a fast hard hitting unit. Ill get onto that once I finish my current Mauler/Forge Fiend build.

The new DA flyer is not bad at all, just so expensive. I can't really do a traditional flyer for this army, it's got to be some tentacled daemon engine. I tried with some valkyrie engines but they are too big, I might be back to square one.
The thing that jumps to mid when I look at your army is the sentinel thingys from the Matrix movies, the giant tentacled machines. How about maybe the Storm Talon engines in place of the Valk ones?
Biohazard wrote: The thing that jumps to mid when I look at your army is the sentinel thingys from the Matrix movies, the giant tentacled machines. How about maybe the Storm Talon engines in place of the Valk ones?
The thing is I was thinking of making something based off a manta ray or the daemon screamers, so I'd want the intake to be where either the mouth is or the gills. Something a bit more integrated into the body, I still might use the valk engines but just the ends of them and have one or two integrate into the body and come out the rear.
Yeah I want my stuff to be sentinel-like, although more gothic, organic and random. I'll have to put up some pics of where i get inspiration one of these days.
Biohazard wrote: Arent the Storm Raven engines abit smaller than the Valk engines? A little shorter I think, I really like the idea of the Ray type flyer
Yeah shorter, but square and not as much detail on them. Cool bits, but not what I'm looking for.
More commission pics... another batch of the Owl Marines. And more practice making robes... comes in handy.
Been working on the design of the counts-as helldrake as well. finally feeling like some progress getting done on that. Stay Tuned for painted up stuff!
Viktor von Domm wrote: again...wicked looking.... looking forward to your gloomy glow effects
Thanks vik Yeah you know they will be glowing! They're mostly painted up just final details tomorrow morning and I'm hoping to post pics and move on to the next project. There's just a lot on my plate at the moment!
Thanks guys! Yeah I may get around to doing tutorials eventually, but for now I have a batrep in the works and by that I mean it's filmed but we need to do the voiceovers and final polishing of it. There are good OSL tut's out there, if you have any specific questions or problems don't be afraid to ask, I can't babble on about how I do everything but I don't mind sharing.
Just some more WIP's of the flyer, finally I've got a good idea what to do with it
I call it a Void Seeker. Like the helldrake, it's a daemon engine and spends it's time attached to the outside of mechanicus vessels, or hunting in space, so I gave it a lot of eyes and a little radar thing.
Design wise, it's a hybrid between something from the Matrix and a Cylon Raider, and the Hell blade designs from forge world.
It might be hard to see in the pics, but I've done some work on the wings so far (it's all got rivets, I'm using the glue method so it's hard to see, and panelling). I'm still not sure what to do on the main body but it most likely will be a mixture of more segmented armor plates/wing panelling, some kind of spine-like structure along the middle of the body, and a lot more wires and tubes or exposed machinery. There's a vendetta engine (cut off half-way) in the middle kind of like an in-board engine. And yes I know what you're thinking, there will be tentacles and blades attached. As for the gun... I really would rather not give it a flamer since I think the Hades cannon would look cooler and more space-fighter like.... (flamers don't work so well in space).... but it will probably just be magnetized since in the game the flamer is a bit better. Although I don't know really I might just keep this guy as an anti-air beast.
I'm open to suggestions, but otherwise enjoy the pics!
Also in other news... I've begun accumulating raw material for a terrain board. Sent some old MTG cards to the warstore to trade for a bunch of terrain materials, if it all works out it will be two sets of pegasus chemical plants, and a crap load of pigments, water effects, sand texture and w/e else I need. Also I recieved a top secret item in the mail (I posted a teaser pic in the League terrain comp thread, link below), that will go with the terrain board. I'm hoping to do something based roughly on this picture:
For those who don't know, it's a photo by this awesome artist Edward Burtynsky. It's a river of nickel tailings, waste from a mine, which is pretty much a river of rust It makes you think of a river of blood but it's not so cheesy.
Looking good, the space bat is a great idea, how about having it trailing a whole mess of cables like a stringy tail?
Is the body built up from hot glue?
The board idea sounds cool, sounds similar to an ash waste board. Neil101 did a great ash waste diorama and had a good formula for the dusty waste stuff. Looked great.

Space Bat!
Yeah, It's going to have some cables coming off. Still haven't decided but I might just shell out for the helldrake bits... but it won't be a single tail because that would block the engine. And yes, the body is built up from hot glue and random stuff I had lying around, most of it will get a shell of green stuff much like the head.
I'll check out Neil's stuff. Although I do want the soil/sand to be quite black like the pic, to contrast with the bright rust-orange of the river, but more on that later once I get to it. For the time being the idea is to use mostly spackle over foam and vallejo products for the detailed areas with sand on the banks of the river.
It's taking some time to come together... but that's to be expected. I gave it two magnetized "turrets" underneath the wings, I figure that goes along pretty well with the rules and if I want to I could change the weaponry in the future. I'm really trying to give it more of a 'space fighter' look... so I'm putting small thrusters on it in different places (for maneuvering in space), some larger thrusters on the bottom and a bigass engine/reactor in the middle... there is a lot of machinery around it so you can imagine that it could switch from a jet engine (atmospheric) to thrusters (void). And more of a non-aerodynamic look in general, like a Star Wars fighter.
I am super-excited for that flyer, mate! Having just built and painted a flyer myself, I know I am never painting another Heldrake again, so viable alternatives could be very interesting to me. Looking forward to your next update on that flyer!
Thanks guys, the comments motivate me to work faster on it! I'm expecting all my terrain stuff in a package soon as well... soon I'll be forced to work on that stuff.
Hey guys some new stuff for my board coming along. This is for the -=L=- competition but I thought I would post some here as well for any stragglers just following this blog.. but please any comments there not here!
Oh god what should i work on next? Still want to do the rest of the board now that that's done but have to paint up the army too so I can play a few games...
More scenery... fair enough, I probably should finish this board now I've started it...
@ Ruglud: Thanks dude, welcome to the thread Yeah I had originally tried to make a manta but, I kind of wanted it to look a bit like a cylon fighter so, it just morphed into that. It goes along with forgeworld stuff better and also the shape of the actual helldrake.
Ahh, ha, I thought it was a manta, i totally get where you're going with the design and looks great. Although I wanna see a space manta ray now... hmmm, maybe the next project after my T-hawk? (I must stop procastinating and get back to the build...)
Ohh, and I 2nd the call for more scenery - get to it...
Your Void Seeker is pretty darn impressive. It kind of reminds me of the Demons from Princes Mononoke with all the tubes and wires and such.
Thanks for sharing your creations, they really give the hobby a breath of fresh air.

thanks for the awesome compliment... I love princess mononoke
Some more WIP's... the pics came out a bit yellow though.
Did most of the OSL, the blue jet flames need a bit of work though, and I need to put more definition on the riveted parts (still not sure what I want to do with that). The two boxy things on the top are supposed to be radiators of some sort. Also haven't done any pigments yet or weathering effects in general.
Mate, it's looking great so far. I love the fact that now there's some paint on it I can play spot the bit and see all the bits am pieces you've added. Look forward to the weathering stage.
Biohazard wrote: Mate, it's looking great so far. I love the fact that now there's some paint on it I can play spot the bit and see all the bits am pieces you've added. Look forward to the weathering stage.
yeah my favorite bits to use so far were the warpsmith tentacles... so I could make the little baby tentacles with mouths coming out of the larger one
I'm really liking that. Looks just like it's been grown rather than built. Love the masses and masses of cables and tubes. Will be keeping it in mind for a future build.
Just a quick update... I've been busy working on the Dark Mech stuff some more but its expanded to 6 Forge Freaks (counts as spawn), 50 more Forge Ghouls (zombies) and I'm finicky about the flyer trying to get the details right for final pics. Plus I'm re-doing the obliterators a bit to add to the force. So more on that later!
Also I'm buying a lot more toys, as I'm employed again!
This is the latest distraction though, a small commission from xXWeaponPrimeXx for his Savlar 66th (http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/509450.page), for a sniper character that he wrote, Briggs. Based off of Chapterhouse's female guard kits, which are frankly not the best quality but like most chapterhouse stuff, you need to convert it. I used arms from mantic's corporation troops, which are perfectly sized (don't use cadian arms like they advertise on the website they look terrible). A little love can make anything work I say, so these are good cheap bases for female guard that are not OTT overproduced pinup figs and work better in the 40k universe.
The sniper rifle is a Las-rifle variant, based off the chapterhouse lasgun (which is excellent btw) combined with chapterhouse sniper rifle. I added a backpack power source and a power cable, instead of the traditional power clip, because it looks cool and represents the rifle being a more high-powered very focused lasgun. Also I rebuild the stock into a more cool-looking one, added a rifle strap, and added an eyepiece to the helmet that interfaces with the gun. I also built the rebreather onto the helmet/face which works because the chapterhouse sculpts are hideous, and also sculpted some goggles onto the helmet.
Yeah, the void seeker needs just one more round of touching up and then I have to get some good pics of it. I also scored a forgeworld Hellblade on ebay and I'm converting it up to look more like the seeker.
I hadn't seen that awesome sniper you converted, but I figure you've done some job on it ?
(sorry, bit of a threadomancy, but... I need my fix )
Thanks Yggs sorry no updates :( my job over the summer ate up all my time for modelling work, so things are going slowly. When I'm back it will be a monster update though! Especially with all this resin and plastic I seem to be aquiring...
Wait, what is that in the mailbox ? Another bitz order ??!?
@Meade : Ok, you could at least tell us what are your next plans, especially if you keep on buying some stuff !?
Plans are to finish prizes for the League comp and get them sent out... then... well I have a pile of forgeworld cultists, hellblade and a blood slaughterer to convert, then some infinity stuff, finish about 8 spawn for my dark mechanicus force and final touches for the daemon flyer... and also terrain.
Thanks buddy, yes creepy is what I'm going for! AdMech are pretty creepy dudes, although I also want the loyalist conversions I do to be suitably gothic, you might say. That way the ones who've gone over to chaos can be more contrasting. I'm trying to stay away from using a lot of organic shaped parts with this guy.
For the dark mechanicus I'm collecting little daemon skulls, they will be like the spider skulls except made of daemon skulls, with more wild coiled wire and part-organic feel. Even had an idea about doing some flying servo-daemon skulls, and using them as screamers from the daemons codex
