Funny how cracked.com had a reasons why list regarding unemployment and such, and that was mentioned, if you are unemployed a while, no one wants to hire you, but if you are working somewhere, they want to steal you away from the present employer.

Yeah, I've found that too. Employers want you to be able to start asap, but would rather wait for someone to work off their notice from their current employer than have someone start immediately from unemployment...

It's a long running issue in all fields. Also if your unemployed for a short peiod it's harder to find a job than long term unemployment. Employers look at length of unemployment and people out of work longer usually look better as they have lost some of those work habits of their last jobs. It's not that the people are desperate for something and take the first offer. Also if your unemployed for long periods then there's usually a reason that you haven't gone back besides a bad attitude. Weather it's family issues or school, some people choose to stay unemployed till they find the right fit. I'm going back to work in an unrelated field because of the benefits package and it works around school and family. I'd rather return to what I was doing, but it wasn't as flexible, and my wife hated that.

It's completely frustrating for me. I have 16 years experience and a ton of skills, there are just more applicants in this town than there are jobs in my field. 7 months now. Waay too long. Also, I am waiting for the right fit, but I'm about to take something just to keep busy. I don't seem to have that hobby drive as much with my job needs unfulfilled.

Found a custom action figure someone did!

At some point in the 90's, they took the Xs off of his coat and he sort of went off and did his own things. I had a stack of them, But I can't seem to find covers that look familiar.
And here's the artist's page describing it.
http://www.figurerealm.com/viewcustomfigure.php?FID=51833
-snip-
When Captain America and Bucky disappeared in WWII, Jack Monroe was chosen as Bucky's replacement. He was given a version of the Super-Soldier Serum, which was unstable and led to Monroe becoming mentally unbalanced. He was put into suspended animation. He was revived decades later and joined the original Captain America in battle. Later, he was brainwashed into becoming the new Scourge. Recently, he was killed by the man he replaced, the original Bucky, aka the Winter Soldier.
Here's Nomad in all his 90's excess! Long hair! Trenchcoat! Big guns! Bad attitude! I had a spare Punisher and wanted to make a figure. I knew in the back of my mind there was a character that I wouldn't have to do a lot of mods to. I came across a pic of Nomad, and production started. The head is from Conan and the hair is She-Hulk's. The boots are from Wonder Man, sunglasses from Doc Ock, and I replaced the holster with one I made from Taskmaster's scabbard. Stun-discs and belt buckle from the craft store. Bike on loan from Wolverine.
-snip-

I'm pretty sure it was his change in look that attracted me:
50's/60s/70s/80s

The tights just always seemed stupid to me
1992

Then at some point, they made Nomad a girl

It's funny how your memory can play tricks on you.

heh..There is a lot of comedy back and forth between Iron Man and Hulk in the LEGO game, also there is Capn A saying a lot of stupid things like "I was the first Avenger" It's pretty advanced over the earlier LEGO games too, it has an open World and a lot of switching back and forth between team members to do specific tasks. For Instance. Bruce Banner is a smart character, so are ALL the super Villians. Capn A is not smart. Only Smart Characters can operate terminals. Bruce can get mad and turn into the Hulk (and smash!) but Hulk cannot build stuff, you have to either calm him down and turn back into Bruce or switch to someone else to build things. But certain switches only work by winging Capns shield at them. A lot of good voice Talent in the game too, Jeffery Coombs (Weyoun and Brunt (DS9) and Shran (ENT) plays the voice of The Leader

Different Nomads. The Nomad of the action figure is Jack Monroe, the female Nomad is Riki Barnes from the Heroes Reborn Earth.

Jack Monroe was a Bucky replacement who then struck out as Nomad only to have a lot of carp fall on his head.

Riki Barnes was the female Bucky from Counter Earth created by Franklin Richards, after Cap and the other heroes left she took up the mantle of Nomad and was basically her planet's leading super hero.

I would say place it on the side that's nearest where you consider the front (e.g. nearest the main road).

My first thought was the right (long) side, but then I though the the shorter (left) side would more likely be the front to fit on the street...

I was going to say that maybe it's the relative colourfulness of the sign next to your building Dave.
There are, however, two issues with that statement;
color blind

and

Your building is actually more colourful than the in-game building, being red brick...

Maybe the addition of a small Cornucopia poster/sign on the wall at ground level will tie them together more?

I think it looks fine.

Also, on a side note; that screenshot, was it taken shortly after meeting some Talon company, or could you not help yourself in attacking a defenceless motorbike?

Haha that is one of the Random Encounter areas, and yes, those are in-fact, burning Talon Co. mercs

Wait till you guys see the O scale park benches I acquired

Remember, the bases are modular, so they can be arranged differently from game to game...not really YET though, since this is only the 3rd building I've made.

Color blind doesn't mean I can't see color...
For me specifically I have difficulty with colors next to each other that are a similar shade (reds mostly look the same next to each other, etc)

Regardless, if I'm the only one that sees something funny, it's just me.

Dave have you thought about putting some sales posters in the windows i.e. Meat on sale for $X/ lb or 2 for 1 deals? I know its not represented in the game screen shots but if you're going for realism it's something to consider? Or how about a coin operated animal ride out front?

Thanks guys! I've thought about some posters, but I haven't decided what exactly yet. I also want to build the white produce rack that sits outside of the store.

I'm also thinking that I want to build a Metro Station entrance. I've never been to DC, but from video I've seen in TV and movies, the shelter structures actually look like they do in game.

This is fething awesome! Great work Dave!

And, seriously, if you want any more sign templates made, hit me up.

I think that you shouldn't limit yourself to the game's palette of colors and textures. Video games have severely limited assets in that area. You definitely should look at 50's Americana for inspiration (which, I'm betting you have; just thinking out loud here). I intend to do just that when I get around to my own Fallout project.

Anyway, good stuff.

Thanks Taarnak! I intend to get some good screenshots of New Vegas signage for you! I totally agree! In the older parts of town around here, there are plenty of 50's style stuff still around. As a matter of fact, just the other day I noticed a 50's style laundry sign that would fit right into this look.

Fallout 3 especially has a greenish, irradiated tint to everything in the environment, also anything metallic is rendered in a more NMM look. That may be why Rigel said it looked a bit off. I painted the sign supports with Metallics, but the game only uses greys, greens, and lighting aspects for metallic colors. If you look at BoS Power Armor, it's always rendered as textured grey rather than metallic.

I'm afraid I'm not following you Vik?
I attempted to cut a piece of tiled plasticard for the roof, but like a dumbass I traced it onto the back of the sheet and it didn't fit, besides, the square tiles don't look right on that funky angled overhang part. Tiled plasticard is too expensive to screw up like that.

well...of course scatter terrain could be modeled to just stand on its own accord with no need for any kind of base...
my mind just always thinka about based terrain...so in my terms would need a very thin base to work up there...

it is quite frightening how good you are now with a rotten look...... that rack looks done already... and those benches... suitably a centrury give or take on them

hmmm..a possibility..Do you think the printed texture would be enough to fool the eye?

looks awesome, you may only have 3 buildings but each of those buildings looks better than most game tables!

Those shelves bang on, simple and effective.

Could you get away with painting the effect on the cans by deliberately painting streaks, bad brush and some brown paint maybe?

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/11/08 20:16:27

This is where I pop in as say that you could carve them out of sprue...

Bottles are pretty easy, I haven't tried cans yet, but they are on my list of things to do.

Benches and shelves look good.

The top shelf is obviously for things that are just to make the display pretty and eye-catching from a distance, and you could always ask a (bored) member of staff to get it down for you if they haven't get any others in stock.

At that scale though, a printed off design on a roll of paper would probably work fine and crushing them would probably look quite realistic.

I've seen those pics (in english) on he Lead Adventure forums- sweet stuff!

I'd like to see this corrugated pipe. Bendy straws would be ideal if they weren't so big around.

4mm tubing seems about right, but damn that's small and fiddly!

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/11/08 20:44:40

Post by: Viktor von Domm

i think the trick would be to paint first and cut up later... at least it wouldhelp you a bit with the fiddly issue...

have you seen silveroxide´s stuff here on this board? he uses a dremel to make a mini lathe... maybe with a sharp knife you could make a lathed rod and then cut it to size?...

...Or use sprue.

Actually didn't Galorn recently make some cans for a base or two out of GS.

You could even stuff those tubes you have there with GS, let it set and then carve the lines on it...

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/11/08 20:49:06

Post by: dsteingass

But once it sets, how do you get it out of the tube? It'll fuse to the plastic won't it?

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/11/08 20:50:28

Wrapping tinfoil round a tube could work if you pressed indents into the foil first so that one side had slight ridges on, then you could crush and dent to your heart's content.

Dave I got some aluminum stock tubing from hobby lobby a long time ago. It's the proper diameter for cans, and you can cut them to size easy enough. To corrugate them I guess you could use a pipe cutter on it and make a revolution around the pipe, just don put too much pressure on it. Then tap it to ding the sides.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/11/08 21:17:09

Or you could get tricky and punch 2 different size 'rivets' from thin plasticard, glue them in alternate bands to get a ribbed effect (for her pleasure), When set, drill them out. Damn fiddly but should work?

Thanks Pacific! I assume you're talking about the BoS with the minigun? It's based from a Brother Vinni "not BoS" figure, I thought his minigun was too short for my tastes, so I built the minigun barrels from scratch and used Zinge Ammo belts. The rest of my Fallout Miniatures are from MANY different sources, and most are heavily converted. Brother Vinni (from Russia) makes the best BoS, Super Mutant, and Enclave miniatures out there IMHO though. The Super Mutant Behemoth is a Dark Age Mongo with custom Corvega Door shield (really as big as a truck door) and custom shopping cart backpack/slave cage.

Good job Dave.
Looks like there's nothing useful on those shelves, although you still have to check, have to hope the safe inside has something good.

Toilets may be available soon.

Your shelves look like the local CO OP on a bank holiday weekend

Have you considered adding some kind of debris or rubbish to the pavement ?

Sweet

Definitey looks the part, great job Dave.

As for street debris, maybe some litter close to the building walls, shouldn't get in the way too much there, possibly a few patches of sand on the pavement, but I agree you want to leave it fairly clutter free for gaming purposes.

I usually go through and use things like newspapers, fallen posters, flattened pizza boxes, smashed cans, and some lumber type bits (nothing too thick though). You can use location specific items as well like a knocked over chain link fence, fallen down signs as well as stuff like blown out windows.

They are thin enough that you can place miniatures on them without them getting off balance but they break up the monotony of bare pavement in the post apocalyptic urban environments. Although not fully inline with the environment you are recreating - things like weeds growing up through the cracks in the pavement are also pretty useful for showing age and neglect.

As my good man monkey said small collection of dust and crap at the edge of the walls, maybe some kind of paper rubbish laying across the pavement which would not be bulky and impede miniature movement.

If you mean "like what LDD?" concerning my CO OP remark I will explain, when we have a bank holiday ( usually a monday of none work for the country or most at least ) the local supermarket gets raided so the shelves end up emptied.

Quite true - but that doesn't stop you from putting it out there, though for far future stuff I usually adapt my debris to fit those environs. A smashed case of Soylent Green or Brawndo always is good (and tests to see if anyone is paying attention). Other things like Psi-Cola, Half-Life's own Nuka-Cola, Slurm and other products from books, movies and other games are fun to throw out there too.

Sorry guys to throw of topic but I need to pick your brains, I have a paint issue and not sure what the hell to do the conundrum is as follows and open to any suggestions.

I have some Hotwheels cars that I want to detail but still keeping the original paint scheme intact, now what I want to know ( if at all possible ) is there any way of washing the original paint scheme that will adhere and not ruin it.

I only want a slight wash to slightly shadow any grooves or detail ect, however the concerns are will it run evenly and will it adhere to the original paint.

Do I need to add a varnish or clear coat first or can I go straight over the original paint work ? Also I want to weather slightly afterwards would I need to seal it after the wash or before ?

Thanks in advance guys and sorry Dave for invading your thread, but due to traffic and your own knowledge I thought this was the best chance I have.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/11/10 20:47:16

Post by: dsteingass

A wash will dry completely and adhere no problem. However if you want it to oNLY go in the recesss I'd recommend a GLOSS coat. don't be afraid of gloss, you can always make it flat later. You sound more afraid than anything. WHen in doubt, paint something else to test with first. You can always paint over it too.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/11/10 20:57:22

Post by: lone dirty dog

To be honest I am a bit worried I have some of the Custom classics and love the paint scheme, the thing is they are to flat for miniatures to blend naturally.

So I thought a contrasting colour wash would help lift the model without ruining the paint scheme, I was not sure if it would adhere to the paint or run evenly.

The other issue is how thin should the wash be as I don't want to alter the main body colour, then do I seal it once the wash has dried completely ?

I want to do some slight weathering but not excessive, I thought of a test but what can I test but the model itself ?

I think I need to just bite the bullet and try I guess

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/11/10 21:41:16

Post by: dsteingass

What do you mean Custom Classics?

A wash and a glaze are two different things. a wash is for shading details, a glaze is for changing hue. I'd use a pre-mixed wash if I were you.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/11/10 22:03:55

Post by: lone dirty dog

Custom Classics was the range of Hotwheels cars along with the G Machines, they scale up nicely to heroic scale miniatures so using them for my gangers and Apoc world.

They have some nice bright finishes and special paint work, this is what I don't want to ruin but add some depth to the model itself.

I did not think I mentioned Glaze if you mean when I said "how thin should the wash be" some people water there washes down to give more transparency so they can build the colour more steadily.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/11/10 22:22:12

You didn't mention it, but you mentioned "altering body color" which is what a glaze does.

Bright paint in post-apoc?? Dirty them up!!

I did a wash on another model a while ago and the colour altered slightly, albeit it was yellow base colour which with a slight brown wash turned it grimy looking all over.

Not the effect I was after however this was not the original factory paint, it had been stripped and repainted with Acrylics.

Yes, most will be weathered and altered trust me this is the main reason for the project, but I want this and a couple of others to be rather clean looking as these will belong to the new order rulers so to speak.

You always get the untarnished pieces in the Apoc films thats why they stand out, so thats why I want to keep the look of the original paint to have that nice shiny feel in a world of ruin.

A gloss coat will ensure that the wash only goes into the recesses. The thinner the better in that case. Also, you don't have to coat the whole thing, you can just brush it into the panel lines or recesses. Type of paint is irrelevant with a gloss coat.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/11/10 23:09:03

Post by: lone dirty dog

I see so my Vallejo Gloss Coat airbrushed over the original factory paint, then a thinned wash painted directly to panel lines and recesses should work fine.

Just one last thing do I seal the wash afterwards before weathering or after the weathering is done as well ?

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/11/10 23:17:45

Post by: dsteingass

You can seal/gloss/flat coat as many times as you want. the only thing to remember is to let the clear coats dry completely before doing anything else, otherwise your wash may literally WASH it off.

OFFICIAL JUNK PILE MODELING CONTEST RULES

1- Contest is open to anyone that wishes to join. Official start is Friday November 15th 0000 your time and official end is Friday December 13th @ 1800 EST. Your project must be completed and submitted for judging within the expressed time frame, there will be no extensions.

2- You are building a pile of junk out of junk parts. Must be a new project and you must provide me with one WIP picture that does not have paint. It is acceptable if a repurposed part on your model has paint from a previous project.

3- Piece must be appropriate for the W40K or WFB universe.

4- Must be on a base no larger than a 40K 60mm round base and no smaller than a WFB 40mm square base (exceptions- 25X50mm WFB cavalry base, 25X70mm 40K bike base, WFB 20x80mm troop base). See photo for reference:

You do NOT have to use a GW base, I’m mentioning them only for scale reference. You may build your own base from plasticard, hardboard, pre-fab from any manufacturer, whatever works for you. Just stay within the noted size limitations.

5- No WIP shots on this thread, and do not create direct links to your photos on this thread. Please post on your own thread or PM me w/ pics or link to pic location.

6- Submit your entry by sending me 1 'master copy' photo of your completed project for posting here, I will post your photo on Dec 13th. See additional photo requirements for the judging process at bottom section of rules.

CATAGORIES

Due to the overwhelming participation, I've created the following competition categories. I am requesting each contestant choose the catagory appropriate for their skill level. If the level chosen appears to be below contestant's capabilities based on examples of past wrok I will request they move to a higher catagory. If a participant is unsure of what category to join I will assign one for them.
Categories and qualifications are as follows:

Chaos Lord- Participants in this category have displayed incredible skill and have had their work recognized elsewhere, such as GW and / or other significant contests / publications / etc.

Exalted Champion- Participants in this category have not been officially recognized as above but display extraordinary skill. This is the minimum class for any Dakka contest winner.

Aspiring Champion
- Participants in this category have displayed exemplary skill in their work.

Chaos Cultists- Participants in this category display noted effort in their work.

Chaos Spawn- Participants in this category are Dakka lurkers that have come forward and joined this contest. This is the only category that is not qualified by skill, so expect some distinct variety from this gibbering horde.

The purpose of the different categories is to ensure the most fair and balanced level of competition possible. If anyone feels they should be moved from their assigned category for any reason please PM me.

Scoring

Scoring will consist of 3 categories worth a maximum of 100 points overall. The categories are:

Bitz (30)- What you choose and use to build your piece

Paint (30)- Colors used, diversity in colors / textures, weathering /damage, etc

Impression (40)- Overall impression for the model as an entirety. Does the model shows scale perspective with all materials used? Were the materials varied and diverse? Does the paint and weathering compliment and define the overall build? Does the model tell a story? Does the model fit the 40K or WFB universe? Etc.

Scoring Criteria

Add points for:

No prefab, meaning a complete build of random junk bitz. Examples are crushed sewing thimbles, mechanical pen springs, soda can tabs, cassette deck components, little broken bits of plastic, etc.

Immediate +5 point Bitz bonus for anyone that sends photographic 'as it happened' evidence of picking up a piece of random junk from a parking lot, sidewalk, dumpster, etc.

Comprehensive list of parts you used

Neutral points for:

Majority non-GW prefab bitz from old models (1/35, 1/24, etc) like military vehicles, cars, trucks, etc.

Deduct points for:

Majority GW bitz

No list of parts / bitz

Base that is outside size limitations (exceptions as noted in individual requests)

Posting WIP on this thread

Poor quality / insufficient number of photos.

Judging and Winning Entries

Each category will have a 1st and 2nd place winner. There will also be a 'popular choice' vote where your vote bestows the honored title of Primarch to the overall winner. In the case of a tie in any category I will decide on the criteria to break the tie. Primarch votes accepted from Dec 13th to Dec 26th. Contest winners will be announced on Friday Dec 27th.

First place winners of each category will be awarded a personalized piece of terrain built and painted by me. Second place winners will be awarded a bag of bitz from my bitz box. Winner of the Primarch title will receive both. If Primarch title is awarded to anyone that placed 1st or 2nd in any category will receive cumulative prizes.

IMPORTANT
Be sure to provide me with FOCUSED, CLEAR, and WELL-LIT pictures for judging. Minimum number of photos I am asking for is 5 but more is better and be prepared if I request more as I may need them for a tie-breaker or other decision.

If you do not have a device that can take a clean and clear photo, please consider getting assistance from a friend / family member, etc. It is not my intent to penalize anyone based on available technology or ability to use it but understand I will have to judge your piece by the pictures you provide.

So, for no particular reason, I've had a bit of burnout with dakka for the past few months- hopefully this will get me back into it!

also,
dsteingass wrote:I'm a noob to it all, it is complex. All I know is that they blame Shrike for every eyesore upon the land

the eyesore thing is probably because my first house (first one on the dakka server *woot*) got creepered so many times in one day I just stopped repairing it and, since it was copied over to the second server, has been mysteriously creepered multiple times since. Or it may be due to the fact that the manor which I built is essentially a giant block of brick.

dsteingass wrote:LOL, I'm not sure why they blame Shrike, but apparently it's a thing to blame Shrike for everything

I can't actually remember how that started, but I think it was just the fact that I was involved in a lot of projects and generally didn't have the best luck (dying at all the worst times etc.), so people started saying "god damn it, shrike" and such for anything bad which happens

But yeah, flattered to see I'm a topic of conversation, and keep up the good work everyone

Glad to see ya back Shrike! The Vanilla sever is new again (2 weeks ago) btw. FTB is just too crazy and complicated for me.

I know the feeling about getting creepered. You don't get much sympathy- everyone is busy doing their own thing, although help was easier to get in FTB with the flying and all.

not tried FTB yet, when the tekkit server got taken down I just really didn't feel like learning a whole new set of stuff again

and yeah, back then people helped out because at that point there were literally about three or four us on.

IF it's that bad for you (which I doubt) all you'd need is a better graphics card and probably a power supply that can handle it.

Yeah it probably will be a bit of a quick turn around for then.
Birthday next year then.

I would rather wait and it actually work when it comes out, then for it to be rushed out and be full of bugs (as seems usual)...

Well I had issues while playing fallout ever since...I doubt I would get away with a simple upgrade...besides I am still working with vista...and a new complete overhaul migh come in cheaper all around in the end...of course this is my utter layman's opinion here...

The fallout games are games you just feel betrayed by life if you have to play the game with low graphic settings...

for some reason, I'm really bad at noticing things like graphics- unless I'm shown it side-by-side, I won't notice the difference in HD TV, nor did I notice the 5000p 48fps stuff that the hobbit had, so graphics really don't bother me. 'Tis a gift when it comes to not having a great gaming setup

I spoilt myself with graphics when I pushed my computer to it's limits playing Crysis at very nearly full settings... nothing I've played since has looked as pretty, or at least had the same impact at the time.

we recently went HD TV and i have to say... mindblowing eyesight.... it is the same feeling you get when you get that sudden urge to clean your window panes...and suddenly actually SEE the stuff outside... same with HD graphics or TV...

It DOES make a difference..EXCEPT when you watch an old TV show and everything is pixely We have a local station here caled "Antenna TV" it's all old show re-runs, if you sit too close, it looks like gak.
I've been religiously watching McHale's Navy every day at noon LMAO at all the gak they pull on ol' Cpt. Binghamton

On Halloween, they ran a 24/7 marathon of old Alfred Hitchcock presents..I'd rather see old Twilight Zones...I rememer being mindfethed by those when I was a kid

Those signs are badass Ruglud!
S-Mart especially!
I have an Ash mini waiting for me

ET Dellums (Three Dog) all but confirmed it on twitter, and Fallout 4 is now Trademarked. This is gonna happen. I am ready!

I can't remember who, but someone was complaining about Bethesda releasing buggy games..not sure what they were talking about, unless they were talking about the console release..which is irrelevant to a PC gamer like myself.
In fact, Electronic Arts is undeniably the buggiest publisher of all times (because they rush the developers), but they are just a corporate mega-giant, also irrelevant.

Well, they have to print it to disc and get it through customs, etc. The pc world has pretty much gone digital download, so they can fix day one bugs quicker. I thought I heard one of the next gen consoles was trying to do that too., go all digital.

It amuses me that after all this time of consoles being touted as the hardcore gaming experience and that PC gaming was dead, that consoles are becoming more and more like PCs...

I still prefer to buy solid/real objects, not sold on the buying digital things thing...

Which is why I still like my solid discs for my games, on Space Marine did I get download wise as with DLC for my main games.

150 already, jeez. Started my blog at same time and I am up to page 8 I think.

I like the DLC side of it to be honest, means you can easily transfer material around. My kids machine blew up. Built him a new one, sign in to Steam, all ready to go. I know these things are a pain in the patella but they do have advantages. And as to the PC v's Consul, PC wins hands down every time. There is no argument.

The only argument you get in pc vs. console is from people trying to run games on crappy systems

Besides, aiming with that stupid analog stick is annoying. If they ever have true cross-platform games, Mouse and KB will pwn every time.

meh..I don't have an issue with the OS, just the premise of having to buy things that I already own.

As for Marines, I don't like them because the latest releases are overpowered and overproduced by GW. It's really not personal.
