Stunning paint job and the vignette base is inspired. She is not my cup of tea from a style point of view, but in terms of your paintwork it is incredible. The layering is perfect and you capture the tone. Doesn't fail to impress regardless of the subject matter.

Cheers TP - aye, she's a little out there for some folk but it's always nice to try something new and different. I had a blast working on her and building a vignette base for her too. Nice trying a different and larger scale than the usual 28mm. Just had an Inq 54mm fig arrive the other day I snapped up on ebay

Great work there Januine! Super vibey and your color choices fit the creepy asthetic of the figure. Especially on the skin. It truly is a disturbing piece. The base, goes without saying, is just fantastic. Grimy, gritty, scary. Just like a NYC emergency room hahaha....and The dripping blood. So awesome. Great job dude.

I put this up over on the Society of Fine Painters first, but thought I'd copy over to here as well, as I'm going to add to it as the paint foir the Dracosan continues. First part below is just a quick little cheap and nasty technique for getting a nice base metal down which as some depth to it rather than just a flat plain metal base. Next I'll start doing some grey armour panels which will then get chipped and weathered back to the base metal in places. As its paint being chipped away, I prefer to chip the paint back to an underneath raw metal rather than painting metal chipping on top of the painted plate if that makes sense - just seems and looks more legit and realistic. This is basically the same techniques as I used on the Thanatar a few months back
I love my metals and metallics - TMMs all the way. Bright, shiny and new metals are nice but I prefer the dirty, stained and old metals for the most parts. This works nicely as an esy way to get a good old and worn metal base to then further work on.
Base whatever it is with a black spray first (I've alwys used GWs Chaos Black spray and always found it to be top notch)
Once dry, get out your drybrushes - its fun messy time.
We're going to put down a succession of three different metallics to give a nice tarnished patina'd effect.
First up - roughly drybrush with warplock bronze - this gives a nice dark depth to the metal finish
nice and light. get in there! Wash out the drybrush thoroughly and let it dry
Next drybrushing time again, this time with ghenna's gold. This will give patches of stain, tarnish, oxydation etc etc. Dont be as thorough with this layer as before - let some of the bronze show through in places
washy washy, dry dry......drybrush the final layer with runefang steel. This will seem really too bright and shiny but it needs to be as the washes later will bring it right down.
Be quite thorough with this layer but again heavy in some places, lighter in others
Leave to totally dry and then some. Finally wash the whole thing with ye olde faithful Nuln Oil - don't be scroogey with this wash but try to avoid pooling. Even if you do get a few coffee stains here - it doesnt really matter as it just fits right in with the overall intended effect.
Once this is dry you have your base aged metal done. From here, you can add other targeted shades/washes to add further stains, grime etc - agrax and coelia are great for this.
Later some dabs of typhus corrosion into corners and lower recesses complete the fithly metal effect
Hope all of that makes sense and helps some folk out
Cheers
Jan
Next steps: (I'm just going to continue adding to this post so the whole thing is together and in one coherent read)
Base coats for the armour. This is in the livery of my homebrew Forgeworld, Achlys III - mostly dark grey with twilight blue as a secondary colour.
Base coat is 2 thin coats - Grey > Mech grey followed by Eshin Grey
Blue > Steg cale Green followed by Dark Reaper
Next we add some nice oily grimy depth and shadow with Momma's old fave - Nuln Oil. Applied quite liberally here
Next thing we'll do is lighten up the panels again in some areas and add in the highlights. But first, gotta take the dog for a haircut!! @_@
Lightened the armour panels up after the wash. As this is my first tank, I wasn;t sure how to go about it -so went with several progressively lighter layers for dry drybrushing. seems to have had the desired affect. Next will glaze the panels to soften the transitiions and reafffirm the deep shadows. The grey went from eshin grey>dawnstone>administratum grey and the blue was dark reaper>ulthuan grey. About 5/6 layers I think

Little of yummy side news. The bases I ordered from Waylaid Games finally arrived. They're from the tech range bases made by micro arts studios and they are sweet!! Casting is pretty much perfect. The few air bubbles I found are all on the bottom of the bases. The details are crisp and sharp baring a single piece of thread plate on one base. These are for the DW:O figs when I eventually get to them. Ordered 59 bases in total for £45 approx. See what you think

The Nurse looks great, and thanks for the metal tutorial. Cannot wait for you to tackle DW:Overkill.

Cheers T. Still have a few final details I've noticed on the nurse to take care of.
With the new bases in, I'm gonna jump one of the deathwatch marines ahead and paint him up to see how he looks on the tech bases. Just finishing putting the Raven guard guy together. Sweet mercy they really are some gorgeous sculpts! Hopefully get to him later this week .....is. Working on the Dracosan today though.

Cheers Az. I'm really happy how she turned out. Whole pile of new stuff went into painting her, some of it (SKIN!!!) I was a bit out of my comfort zone but that's how we learn eh??!!!
Quite like the 54mm size, so will be doing an Inq 54 fig soon. I love that whole range but damn they are hard to lay hands on these days :(
Automatically Appended Next Post:
FAst approaching the 72 hour mark of endless rain - the chang ma is here. Everything is soggy, sticky and nurgley! Have got a nice chunk of painting done though and set out my goals for this month
What I hope to be getting finished this month........well, at least as much as possible!!
The Dracosan is coming along nicely (see above a few posts for a step by step so far)
While I have really no interest in 30k, I do love the stuff that FW is coming out with for it, the SA tanks are sweet, sweet stuff and the Mechanicum stuff threatens to force me to sell my soul!
All the base I ordered for the DW:O figs arrived the other day so I decided to road test one and cracked opened the box. Raven Guard fella is up first (no prizes for guessing who'll be the last ) - gorgeous pose and sculpt. Made a wee start on him. It;s rare that I paint with base already attached! Just got the base started and made a start on the left silver arm to see how I'm going to do them.
Edit - damn auto-appended posts ><

The black of the armour is exquisite!
Will there be a mini-tutorial for that process?
91816
Post by: Januine
Cheers Blimy funny you should say that, once I finished, I suddenly thought - crap shouldve taken some photos along the way as some folk might find it useful. It was really just abaddon black and dawnstone blended up for the highlishts and then aba black, medium and a touch of kantor for the glaze. Lotta brushlicking though!

Just knowing what paints you've used is helpful, cheers

Both the Dracosan and the Raven DW WIPs are looking fantastic so far. Depending on how well my Execution Force stuff pans out, I might have to follow you and use Industrial Bases on a set of DW:O models as well... hrm...
91816
Post by: Januine
Cheers Az. The DW:O set is so nice and with the game and the whole story that goes with it etc etc, I decided to splash out and get some nice bases that go with the boards and the theme. To base the whole set cost me about 45gbp and I'll have a few bases left over. Really happy wth the bases, definitely fit in with the board tiles, and the game.
74210
Post by: Ustrello
Do you have anyone to play the game with? I know you've said its tough to get games out there.
91816
Post by: Januine
Aye, there's a few folk I may rope in. But for gaming I'd usually have to travel up to Seoul to a shop there. They have a whole pile of free tables to play on. Never done it though.
Anywho -Setorax is pretty much done, base still needs touch of the ol weathering powders and there's a few things I need to think about still - what to do with his claws and whether or not to chip and weather his armour. For now though, am happy

Lovely job with Edryc He's pretty nasty in-game. Hits on 2s with lightning claws, can't be shot at beyond combat range and his grenade launcher is pretty useful too for clearing the weaker cult warriors.

I'd definitely advocate some weathering, simply because smooth black, white and silver makes a great canvas for some really striking effects in that department.

Excellent work on Setorax, as others have said the glow effect on the jet pack is especially good. How did you go about highlighting the beakie helmet...the beak especially?
*puts own Setorax down and stops painting in shame*.
91816
Post by: Januine
Cheers lads. Not sure still about the claws, theyre a kind of black steel at the mo that I mixed myself which i do like. I may do some thin electricity threads up them akin to what i did on the terminators thunder hammer some pages back. Not so sure about doing them full on blue.
The highlights on the beakie helmet (damn but i hate beakies!) was just done the same way as the rest of the armour - really thin layer/glazes going form abadon back up to dawnstone grey. I imagined the light to be comeing from up adn to his left - so (his) left side of the helmet is much brighter than the right side.
Am very happy with the jetpack - came out nicely for my first go. Immediately wrote it down and promptly lost the piece of paper. Have put it into the paintmyminis app though so all is good

Humidity over here is awful during the summer which means the ever infamous purity seal is totally out unless you fancy the ultimate in stay frosty figs!! The only real use I have for seal anyways is for fixing weather powders as I like the way PS melts them into the areas giving a really ground in grime, dirt and worn look. Lot of folk rave about testors but can't get that over here so I've been trying just about every other Matt spray varnish I could find (white spirits can also be used but it gives a different effect and result and not what I'm looking for in this case)
Finally have found a brand/product that seems to laugh in the face of Korean humidity, fixes and seals the powers and not a glimmer of mr. Frosty to be seen. Montana is the brand!!!
Did a quick test on some of the bases I use for the SH termies yesterday evening and then on the base for Setorax after that and we seem to have a winner. Here's the stuff.
As to availability - I have not idea but if you're suffering from the humid spray blues and you see this stuff - I can heartily recommend it

I'm kind of curious as to how you painted the feathers that are hanging on his belt and jump pack. They look really good!
91816
Post by: Januine
Cheers Zergy - feathers were easy enough. Wanted him to have more raven looking feathers so checked some photos out - raven feathers have a kind of greeny bluey black glossy sheen in realiity so needed to try and show that. Based them with a mix of black with just a touch of incubi darkness and then highlighted by doing thin lines on the vanes where the light on the hits the feathers with more and more incubi added in each time - just by drawing thin lines up and out from the rachis. To make the rachis pop out a touch more I added the tiniest touch of fenris grey to the mix and drew that along the shaft. Feathers uually have a light sheen to them so painted on some satin varnish at the end. It ended up a little too shiny so a coat of lahmian medium toned it down a touch. Hope that helps

I think my list might be a magnitude larger. Better just not count, seems like I'd make myself sad.

I only count stuff I bought to actively work on in my list. Investment pieces or "I need a few years to get better at painting." I don't count.

Whaley - you are quite right - and it's killing me......sitting at home, in a box, lonely.........
Buttery - nice try......they still count
The list actually keeps me from going nuts and ordering/buying loads more stuff -especially all the new mechanicum stuff that FW is putting out at the mo. The only thing I'm looking at buying these days is Inq54 figs but they're beastly hard to get at a decent price if at all so I'm safe!!!!! (ish!)

Wife's off to work, dog's snoozing so time to get a little paint down. Working on Antor Delassio for this month's comp but will also start on Branatar as well in the background. Also on of the hybrids as I need to get their scheme down. They'll be of the same line as the SH 'stealers I've done but need to figure how I'm gonna adapt the scheme for the more human looking and coloured hybrids. I'll start with the oop end of the spectrum to a stealer with a 4th gen hybrid whose skin tones should be almost human but still with some not so human tones in shadows of the skin. The clothing is basically a miner's pressure suit - cheap, mass produced and worn. Thinking some sort of beige should work well.

The perfect highlight for blonde hair is
Bleached bone > Sepia > bleached bone > watered down white and BB, or whatever the fethers changed it to.

The face certainly does not look like you have had any issues with it. I do always find blonde hair a bit of a pain to paint, it always looks more "out of the bottle" rather than natural.
Great work on the Space Hulk miniatures too.

Cheers lads. Just finished doing the silver arms on two of the DW:O marines. Little subtle sky earth glazing like I did on the ravenguard fella.
Not sure when the judging for the comp will be concluded. Another week or so I reckon. I entered four categories but the standard is super duper high so not really expecting to win. Just a bit of fun

Nothing done all weekend. Family trip n that. So lots to be done today.
Damn list is going to grow again. Just preordered Death Masque. Stupid flgs over here sold out almost immediately of the preorders. So have had to order direct from GW. But added an inquisitional acolyte to put it over 100squids and get the free shipping and that works out cheaper than buying from the flgs an hour up the road o.O I already have a whole pile of harlie stuff so the troupers and the skyweavers as well as an extra dark vengeance boxed set I have will get thrown on eBay if I can ever figure out how to do the bloody shipping !!!

91816
Post by: Januine
Yeah - I figured with the ravenguard laddie the jumppack was gonna get right in the way. I converted/altered his flamer arm as well to be away from his chest more and actually pointing where he;s looking otherwise his makes getting in there a pain

Delassio's chainsword broke during transit for me, so I've had to give him a pretty chainsword from the Vanguard kit.
Love the red on that shoulderpad. Very deep! The 3rd/4th gen hybrid in the back there is coming along nicely as well .

Post by: Paradigm
Coming along nicely, but what's really taking the cake is those bases! Seeing them with models, they really do set them off nicely!
Blame GW for the increasing backlog; if they didn't keep releasing awesome box sets chock full of lovely models, we wouldn't need to keep buying them!
91816
Post by: Januine
@aov - cheers laddie. Black armour is all done now for him and the salamander guy. I used the same red method as I use for the SH termies. I prefer the deep red look as not a fan of the bright 'look at me, I'm faaaabulous!!!' red usually seen. Similarity, went with the darker FW 30k green for salamander dude. Again prefer darker tones than candy ones.
Really am loving painting these deathwatch figs. Sculpts and casting really is top notch.
@para - super happy with those bases from ehhhmm, ehhhhh ...... Whichever company maðe them!!!! Have hem for all the DW:O figs save the white scar. As they don't do an oval bike base. Should be hard to make my own though. Really nic bases and the casting is flawless. Good variety of different types as well. Damn GW and their constant assault of new awesomeness!!!! It's pretty straightforward - just micro layering up though the engine well. Based with iron breaker then Abaddon/Kantor blue mix to set the tone. The just layer up Kantor blue > Kantor/altdorf guard blue > altdorf blue > altdorf/fenris > fenris > a few dots of white scar at the end. Takes about an hour I guess but looks pretty ok

I haven't forgotten about your Bolt Pistol, by the way - embarrassingly I haven't been able to find one yet, and I've been getting into my marine parts and bits and bobs. Ah. I used the citadel shades as glazes. First glazed with cass yellow, next a mix of cass yellow and whatever the red shade is called then red on its own and finally nuln oil. The custodes.....id maybe paint one if I could get my hands on one but won't be buying any of the 30k boxed sets like the prospero set that's supposed to be coming. I don't know what he used, but if I want that effect I usually glaze it with a little Guilliman Blue.

Sweet little spot of painting done this afternoon - 4 hours straight while watching mi_choi live stream over on twitch. Boom - suddenly 4 hours gone by and had a ton done on Mr. Deadness here. Oooh. Nice! Love the broken panel there. Are you going to do him as a Blackshield dreadnought a la Death Masque, or chapter specific?
91816
Post by: Januine
Blackshield. The broken panel and a few little paint hints will give clues as to his original chapter but they'll be pretty subtle. Tried to make the build a little bit more dynamic as tbh these dreads are pretty static walking lunchboxes. Not to the most exciting of things. think I've given him a wee touch of action

Cheers Joe. Looking forward to painting him. Think he may skip the paint queue. There'll be a few clues as to his original chapter in the paint too. I was never that keen on the SW washing machine dreads as they don't get much posability or dynamism but think I managed to give a little to it and now that he's built in front of me - quite like the big eejit

Post by: Januine
@heretic tom - the broken front panel? Just done with a pair of plastic snips
@aov - it's the base and his head I don't like
@genom.cor - the flesh is rakarth flesh as a base and then shaded and glazed with seraphim sepia and agrax. The claws and chiton are a mix of xv-88 and abbadon black. There's loads more photos of the stealers here >> http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-91816-50507_Purge%20The%20Xenos%2C%20Suffer%20Not%20The%20Alien%20To%20Live.html

91816
Post by: Januine
Not.A.Chance!!! I have really enjoyed painting these BA termies though. But after this lot I think that'll be it for the BAngles for the future. As for 'stealers, after Spce Hulk, I do still have all the cult guys from Overkill to do. Thankfully there's only a few purestrains in that set. 'Stealers & Nids - probably my least liked faction. Not my most hated 40K group but urgghh - defintely not an army I'd ever consider collecting outside of a boxed game like Overkill
78187
Post by: Thraxas Of Turai
A shame as I reckon you would paint up an exceptional BA army, good to see more progress on the Terminators...not long until they are all done.
91816
Post by: Januine
Cheers T. I don't mind the ba as much as I used to but even with the darker red I do them in, I don't think I could do a full army of them. I really have enjoyed these guys though. Very happy how they've come out

91816
Post by: Januine
He's DW -the shiny arm is their thing. On the marines it's fine but sized up onto a dread.......undecided. Silver is just base for now, havent added in a wash and the glaze yet which will tone it done a tad

Post by: Januine
Hasn't just been all work on Eldrad this week. Got some more done on the DW Blackshield Dread. He's coming along. The golds need work - not mad keen on the hue of them at the mo but easier mouth to fix. Very happy with his left arm. Having that much real estate in bright shiny silver just looks........Urgghhhh. Needs something to make it sit better so went in with the glazes I've done on the smaller DW members and exaggerated it a bit more. Think it works well
1
82832
Post by: Inevitable_Faith
He's looking top-notch there Jan. Good call on the glaze for his silver arm. Having too much metallic paint can be problematic for the overall vibe of the model, one of the main reasons why I'm not very drawn to grey knight armies, too much silver.
91816
Post by: Januine
Kinda love/hate the GK. like the figs but the total silver thing (course you can play around with that) is just a bit much. Love some of the sculpts though. Not something I'd really collect though.
Dread is getting there. First time I've had a dread so that's a bit of fun. Generally nice fig if a bit static. Hard to make it dynamic as it essentially is a large dishwasher with a gun. The assault cannon option is horrible though so that's been ditched - just too stumpy
91816
Post by: Januine
While Eldrad is finally done and just waiting some proper photos, I have actually being working on other stuff this month. Namely getting the last four regular SH termies done, another of the overkill marines (Cassius this time - not as fun as the others I've done so far ) and a DW Blackshield dread. Hoping to get this wee band of merry men done by the end of the month.......hoping

The dread is looking fine. I think the difficulty with the DW dread is that the silver shoulder looks odd, as it's lacking the DW-style script on it. The changes and addition to the blue tone on it helps it a great deal.
Nice preview of the Termies as well....
91816
Post by: Januine
Cheers Az. Yeah - totally agree about the dread arm. Just that much plain shiney silver real estate looks out of place. Glad the blue helps. Hard to see here but the under/lower parts of the silver has a brownish glaze to balance it out. Kinda faux sky/earth effect. Termies are coming along nicely despite the woeful WiP shots!! Looking forward to getting them done and SH being one step closer to completion.

Cheers lads. Made a start on Brother Cal ( ) this morning. Wee changes to the usual scheme. Going for and uber dark blue on the armour (don't care for bright blue armour at all), black pauldrons and then went with the same reds I've done the rest of the termies in for his tabard/skirt. The tabad took all of about 10 mins after all the practice I've had doingthose reds on all the rest of his pals!! Hitting a nice dark midnight blue for the armour will make for a very nice change of pace from all the red!

Brother Zameon Gydrael ( the amount of times I had to check the spelling of that bloody name >< )
And the last four regular terminators from Space Hulk Brothers Pointy, LaserSight, Big Gun & Fancy Pants - aka.....Noctis, Deino, Leon & Valencio.
With them all done - there's just the Librarian - Brother Califragilisticexpealidocious or something like that who has an absolute peach of a freehand piece of heraldry to be done on his left shoulder.....joys!! Still SpaceHulk is nearing completion-ish. I can see a light at the end of the tunnel....whcih is being blocked by the 11 'stealers I still have to do!
