I feel like you should have cut the rubble out from his feet and had him going up the step on the base. Seems kinda weird now. "I know this is the only pile of junk in front of me, but the floor is lava, so better step on it"
91816
Post by: Januine
Did think about that but those bases don't look right from the back. He's in an underground mine so am comfy with rubble on a metal base. Still have to prime and paint all the rubble mind

I second that about getting 4th ed. it's a faff to get the extra board pieces as we've discovered.
Superb jobs on the terminators and Deathwatch. I think you're making me more nervous with each one about trying to paint my own!!

Was up at 4am this morning due to my beautiful wife's remarkable impression of a badly maintained freight train done through the medium of snoring - so I thought I'd have a bash at getting a colour scheme together for and paint up one of the stealers cultists from DW:O. Think he turned out nicely enough. As these fellas work in an underground mine, went for a more used and grubby look. Nice and quick figs to paint thankfully so got him done in a couple of hours all told.

Lol! I hope your wife doesn't visit your blogs on here Great job with the GS Cultist. He certainly looks very industrial with that paint scheme. Will you be getting any of the new stuff outside of Overkill then? Or just sticking to the 40 or so cultists from the game? (Do you have the game or just the models?I forgot). Overkill is well worth playing IMO. First mission is a touch unfair to the Cultists as the Deathwatch get a fair number of re-rolls to shoot stuff. After Mission I though... Good luck! lol.

I have the boxed set. Great great buy that was. Mind you all the GW boxed set are pretty awesome value. I'll get a few extra bits for both the bug squad and the DW eventually. Vehicles most likely. Love the blackstar flyer and the Goliath is a sweet bit of kit too. Will hopefully get around to playing some DW:O

Yeah - the dread is coming along beautifully. Nice work on the cultist as well, and an interesting quandry when I get to them - to paint them in something like the traditional purples, or something a bit more realistic like safety orange, perhaps with flouros.
91816
Post by: Januine
Cheers folks. Yeah the copyright thing Is a nuisance as I need tunes or some noise when I paint. Was listening to classy 80/90s movie soundtracks while streaming and trying my best to NOT sing along. Cheers AoV. Carrying on with the colour scheme I did for the stealers in Space Hulk but adding a few more fleshy tones in for the later generation hybrids. The closer to purestrain they are, the paler and more spectral thier skin. Am liking this new stealer stuff. Might even pick up a goliath at some point. Like I dont alreay have enough of a backlog in the cabinet - lol

Dude I like that model! the skin tone is great and I love the way he looks like he's wearing a leather outfit or similar (at this stage anyway) the blue is a good colour choice, you should freehand a bunch of little Cultist icons as a pattern on there :-)
91816
Post by: Januine
Cheers Nerdy. Really happy How the skin came out. Skin is not my strong point at all. Turquoise for the lining against the brown leather outside seemed right. I did a big cult symbol on the inside also in turquoise and then fit the legs which totally covered most of it up!!! Doh!! Just finished the leather coat now and well happy with it. Kinda dark worn beaten leather with orange brown highlights to look like wear and tear.

Post by: Paradigm
Very authentic look to that, top notch stuff! All I reckon it could use is a few thin, sharp lines here and there to look like scuff marks.
91816
Post by: Januine
Aye. Coat still has a few more bits to go. Darker filter and then I give it a few scuffs and grazes to look a bit more worn.
96252
Post by: LeCacty
I agree with Para here. I assume these guys will be pretty ragged being genies and all, and leather gets pretty scratched up if not taken care of.
91816
Post by: Januine
yup - totally. I'm rocking along with the fluff on this. These fellas are coming from a mining colony so their gear is gonna be scavanged, repurposed, well used et al. Most of the cultists troops are wearing old miner hazard gear like boilers suits and the like - well worn and torn. The primus and the magus well be a little less raggedy due to their positions but still....not exactly hive spire elites! On the primus I'll glaze in some deeper shadows and then add so more scuffs and scratches using a medium/high tone. Wanted to get the genral colour and worn highlights done first. The inside lining is still quite bright and the bloody cultist symbol I painted inside is near totally covered by his legs (doh) but I tone that brightness down some and dusty it all up with some weathering powder to match the base. Realy liking these cultists - considering ordering one of the goliaths too Either that of the admech starter box or a blackstar....hmmmmm

Looks top notch there Jan. As I've said before I absolutely love the way you did that sword. He truly looks like he's spent too much time down in the mines. Well done.
91816

@para - totally doable. The head is separate, the claw attaches at the elbow and the pair of arms could be sawed straight off at the armour line. Very easy conversion

Post by: Thraxas Of Turai
Cracking job on the Primus, I really like the natural colour scheme on the chitinous armour plates on the arm. Is he suffering from albinism or are you suggesting that he has not fully developed his Xenos nature?
91816
Post by: Januine
My genestealers are even paler with a black olive carapace. The later generations are paler than humans but still have a little more 'colour' to them than the purestrains. I like the idea of almost albino like purestrians living in the dark on the hulks as they float through space and the warp for feth knows how long.
67097
Post by: angelofvengeance
Unfortunately, he's not sold separately. The Magus, Patriarch, Primus and Familiars are all on the same sprue. You may have to find one on eBay.

Cool reasoning behind the colouration Jan, starved of natural light and living in the depths.

It has been an odd odd crappy couple of weeks. Have been lurking about but not many updates. Haven't really got a massive amount of stuff done. Between streaming on twitch, my hdd giving up game and seemingly now being dead plus RL, things have been a bit nutty. Anyways here's where we're at.
Tentative start on Ghast from the morticians, finally did something with the free slaughterpreist - he's now an ex-chrono gladiator cum Argo-flaggelant inquistional brute with electro whips. And built an onager with magnetized weapon loadouts. Just need to get some painting done. Will be streaming on twitch later today so hopefully make Some Progress on some stuff

Absolutely flawless conversion and painting Jan. I agree with the above that I'm hard pressed to imagine that this isn't the model as sculpted by GW. Great job, it's very inspiring.

Thank you all so much. This was a jump back into converting as I have done any since.....the arch magos I made a good while ago. Really enjoyed the whole thing on this bad boy. Lotta fun

And onto some classic Inq. An old metal acolyte. Love the fig but he just strikes me as a complete douche. That guy in the retinue that everybody hates and the inquisitor ends up offing himself!!

Oh man EDC you're so right, he would be a total know-it-all little git that would just have to show it off anytime he could. He wouldn't even look at you while he talks, just stare at his book and scribble the odd thing down without making eye contact while he tells you stuff. Like he seriously doesn't have time for you and you're bothering him from important imperial business.
On a serious note: that fire looks awesome Jan, once again very impressed by the way you paint flames. The greyish not-black way you did his overcoat is amazing and the choice of not-so-white robes is very well considered.

Ah coolio - cheers Heretic Tom. It started out as a black broiwn but highlighted it up like that with grey as I'm gonna apply some glazes to give some osl glow from the brazier.....hopefully!

I know its already been said, but that brazier is fantastic - seen lots of them painted but never one that was convincingly realistic - maybe its the black or something but yours is great.

Post by: Januine
Wanted to try something different. Bit of an experiment as I rarely do any Osl effects. Really happy how he turned out but it wouldn't be something I'd do too much of or on too many figs. Don't think the underhives are that well lit usually
22192
Post by: whalemusic360
Underhives sure, but every gaming table I've played on has been an open field or cityscape. It would be rough to game with a ceiling I suppose.
91816
Post by: Januine
Lol. True that. But then again I don't game. This retinue I'm working on now are more from the Inqumunda sphere than that of the battlefield though
82832
Post by: Inevitable_Faith
Fantastic job as always Jan. I'm not always an OSL fan but I feel you made the right call here, the grimdark of the necromunda range very much benefit from OSL to add more colour to their usually dreary palette (especially if you go with the John Blanche style of painting).
He looks great and definitely looks up to the task of annoying everyone around him until his squad-mates perceive him as the mutant that must be purged.

Cheers I_F. I'm really happy with how he turned out. With him done we're onto another old school metal fella. A lexmechanic this time. I just love the sculpt of the face on this one. So much character

82832
Post by: Inevitable_Faith
Is that an official GW model? I've never seen it before. If it is I must say that is probably one of the most realistic face sculpts they've ever done, I'm very impressed. You've done a great job painting it too. I remember seeing these guys in the artwork back when I first started playing and thinking "oh man what a gakky life, I don't think I could exist like that". Really makes me sad thinkin about those guys.
On a side note, is it just me or is he secretly flipping everyone off? Looks like he's got a bit of rebelliousness to him after all.
91816
Post by: Januine
He's a GW fig alright - from back in the day. Another dakkite very kindly sent him to me. He's actually one of my favourite sculpts GW has done. He may be a simple wee fig but I think the pose and the face really show the character and life of these guys better than a lot of the bigger grander figures. Love him. Should get him finished up this weekend

And of course someone for them to root out in from the dark and PURGE!!!!

Post by: Thraxas Of Turai
Cassius is, as I believe the kids would not say, "bangin". Is it just the angle or are the eyes on the skull on his bolt pistol arm not coloured in?
The Primus' greatcoat is sublime, the blends, highlights and weathering are all exemplary.
As for your signature, are you a Doctor in your spare time ?
82832

Both look amazing Jan. You've performed magic with the weathering on their legs and bases. I gotta ask how you did the eyes for your GSC guy? Their so black but still have some life in them, that's a look I've been trying to emulate for my Dark Eldar.

This is going to be good!
How are you finding painting the larger scale? Is it noticeably different?
91816
Post by: Januine
Cheers Para. Putting a lot into this one and trying out a few new things to try and level up my painting. All the materials so far barring the nmm (my first attempt at it) trim to his inner coat, have been done with glazing. Works nicely for leather I think. This is my second 54mm model (first was The Nurse) and I really love the scale. There's a few differences - the bigger scale means any mistakes or sloppy technique shows up really glaringly and is harder to hide but it does allow for more character and effect to put in. The head/face is going to be interesting (read scary) to do as it has so much more detail and realism to it, even down to crows feet and wrinkles. I love the scale and the inq54 models I reckon are some of the best sculpts even to come out of GW. Eisenhorn is the first I have to do. After him I have 3 more of the range. I want more but they are costly buggers to find and buy these days. The rarer ones are going for over $100 each on eBay if you can find them :/

@Thraxas - streaming is basically is me painting live with a webcam (well, 2 cams actually) there's a chat panel on the screen as well so viewers can chat away with each other and me via IM. I can see how many viewers there are and read the chat so i can answer questions and interact with viewers etc. pop by and have a look sometime. Inbetween every 3 or 4 glazes of dark grey, I lightly sponge on 3 differnt shades grey from medium light to super light then glaze over again to smooth the texture in a little. I only really sponge onto the areas of big highlight as eventually all the darkker recessed areas with but glazed back to just about black. Happy how its coming out

Busy as buggery these days but the paint has continued to flow and finally took a day to break out the lightbox and camera and get some snaps done of stuff I've finished. So get we go!
Finally got the Lexicanium from Space Hulk done
Which means that superfinally all the space hulk termies are done!!!
Deathwatch -Rodricus Grytt - this guy rocks. Wicked cannon and love that style of helm
From the death masque box - the venerable nihilus. Black shield deathwatch dread. Though I couldn't resist adding a few clues in as hints to his true and possible heritage
Of course a few handy bits to have around!
The inquisiton - a couple of oldies. First - one of my favourite GW figs of all time. The lexmechanic who I now count as an inquisitor's savant. Adore this mini which was a very kind gift from a great dakkite.
Possibly the most annoying look wee git ever to forced upon some unsuspecting inquisitor. This guy just screams 'kick me'!!!
More soon. Hope y'like em

Amazing stuff Jan, it was a pleasure getting to watch you paint a lot of these guys too. I can't stop wondering who the lexmechanic is flipping off though, once I saw that finger, what has been seen cannot be unseen. To be honest he's probably flipping the bird to the Explicator. Great stuff dude, can't wait to see more.

Beautiful showcase there, Jan. I especially like the Fire Hawks Dreadnought who escaped the fate of his brethren and Grytt, who makes me want to shove the fantasy stuff I've been working on aside to work on my own Deathwatch.

Cheers one and all. They were all so much fun to work on. Even that little gimp Réttu Tawt - his osl was a bit of an experiment after watching slowfuse do something similar with a KD model over on twitch.
I just love the expression on the lexmechanic - imho one of the most characterful figs from GW.
More stuff coming soon as I finish up the enginseer and the Titan crew plus Jetek Suburai (sp). Did a tutorial on blacks for him and the glaze I made worked so well I ended up bottling the excess. Lol
