Camera and lights just weren't wanting to play nice today so not the best of photos but hey ho, there ya go

Hot glue gun! then Nurgle's Rot technical paint over that

Post by: Paradigm
Very nice! If I were in nitpick mode, I'd say Goriel himself could do with something to break up the red areas, maybe some white scrollwork or something, but that's really just picking holes in a fantastic mini!

He is amazing Jan. Love the red.

Cheers Para. Know what you mean about the endless red - but he's a blood angel. Endless red is kinda their thing. That's why I went with balck pauldrons and the white shoulder adn shin heraldry. He is one of the ...plainer of the squad but happy enough with the result......photos are bugging me though

Great model Jan! the glue effect is really done well, it's something I want to try one day especially since I have a hot glue gun (you know, for keeping the romance alive in the bedroom) how did you apply the strands?
91816
Post by: Januine
MajorTom was the genius behinf the hot glue. he did it on one of his a while back and was kindd enough to share the secret. Blob of hot glue fresh of the end of the gun on a cocktail stick. Pressed to the bese and then stretched it up to stick to somewhere on the 'stealer. Takes a few tries to get it right. Once cooled I just painted with nurgle's rot and nurgle's rot + a touch of rhinox hide in the shadows.

Cheers. The gore was the last thing to be done when all else was finshed. Hadn't done that hot glue thing before so was a tocuh nervous that I'd banjax it up and feth up the fig but turned out pretty cool in the end

Post by: Azazelx
Great work on this guy. He's certainly come up really well, and the 'nid-gore creates a nice colour contrast with the deep red of his armour.
91816
Post by: Januine
Cheers Az. Aye, I wanted a colour other than red to contrast nicely with the BA. Nurgle's Rot proved to be just the right colour (I very nearly mixed up a purplish goo but thankfully didn't) . I added a touch of rhinox into it later to give some bit a slightly shaded touch. Kinda soirry there isnt more dismembered bugs in the set now!

Just out of curiosity, I noticed the black backdrop your using here, and wondered which backdrop you prefer to use, black or white?
Although I guess it depends on what your actually photographing.

Lotsa base coating been done which is dull as but gotta be done. Trying to chip away at all the space hulk stuff and threw on a spryer ganger I found at home.
Out of nowhere and totally unexpectedly, Mrs Januine wandered into the painting room the other day and said she wanted to try painting a fig with me if I had any extra (lol) figs to paint. Took about an hour to prise my jaw off the floor! So built up two canalise warriors a certain superhero gave me a while back and they're all ready for the pair of us to paint together..........once this pisser of a hangover sods off!

I like those Space Hulk bases, do they over lap the movement squares on the tiles?

Post by: Azazelx
Those bases look great. I'm torn on what to do with my space hulk and by extension Blood Angels models. I like consistent basing, and I like basing that matches the playing field, or is at least reasonably neutral. Which leads to paralysis so I've just been painting different things instead.
Looking forward to seeing how your couples painting turns out!
91816
Post by: Januine
Cheers Az. Really happy with those bases and even though they overlap a touch, they do go really well with the space hulk tiles. I suspect I'll do something similar with the DW:O figs when I eventually get them. I like to do theme bases. Doing the same with all the AdMech as that the ruined landscape of their forgeworld which they are defending against ....... Well, that's another story still being written
We started on the couples painting the other night. Just did some base coating and explained about layers, washes, wet palette etc. Was fun for us though she swears like a sailor in Korean whenever she goes over a line. Lol. I get scolded a lot for being a brushlicker. I give her a month and she'll be doing it too. Rofl

Bit of both Para. I need to order up resin bases for them like I'm using for the Space Hulk figs. I may go with Fenris Games again or I might try a differnt company - same style of bases though. Very keen to try adapting my genestealer paint scheme across from the Space Hulk purestrains to the DW:O hybrids. Gonna have a wee think about it first - how and where to make some pallette changes to show the more 'human' side of the 3rd and 4th gens especially. The marines though will defintely be getting some painty love sooner rather than later

My idea for Space Hulk Terminator basing is to make 40mm bases that the integrated bases can just slot into when needed for 40k games. I'll probably put a big blob of green stuff on the 40mm, press the integrated base down into it to make the slot and then build up the rest of the base around it to match my other Space Marines.

I've just accepted that I'll never complete everything...partly because I keep stripping stuff to repaint. Negative progress!

40K Terminators are usually on 40m bases iirc. The Space Hullk ones fit on 32s....just. But with the 32s they'll fit the Space Hulk tiles pretty much perfectly. The 40s work fine though

Post by: Januine
It's handy for a few things. Give you an immediate guide in balck and white so to speak, as to where the shadows and highlights are going to be (presuming you are wanting to paint as if the light is coming from above). Everything that is going to be hit by 'the light' will be primed white while everything thats in shadow wiull stay black(ish). I like it especially for skin as (for the nurse) I'm going to do the skin mostly in glazes. So folk refer to it as 'pre-shading' or 'pre-highlighting' even I guess.

Cheers Bottle. The yellow glow is light shining through the stained glass window. Works pretty nice with the right light. It's just made for an old green stuff blister pack and a little bit of 'oh crap, how the hell am I going to do this???' Lol
This the base nearly finished. Few more touches to do and then it's on to Larks

Clear/transparent paints? Like Tamiya's range of Clear Acrylics? Vallejo and Minitaire have some as well.

lol. Been planning this one for a while. Still have the rest of the Gaunt's figs to think up/plan/design/rip my remaining hair out over for little vignettes for them too. Lark's was an easy one so started there.
The stained glass is just a piece of a blister pack cut to shape. The black lines and white wings are GW paints (abaddon and palllid wych) but the clear bits are done with Tamiya clear paints. Stinky stuff and defeintely NO BRUSHLICKING with those paints, but they worked out pretty well.
The black lines fgor the 'cames' are painted on one side of the plastic while all the colours are painted on the reverse.
Had to come up with it on the fly as coudnt find any tutorials or other methods on the interwebberies for doing stained glass on such a small scale - but think it worked out pretty well. The yellow glow will cast down on Lark's back which should look pretty cool when all assembled

Ahh lol. Just a bit of experimentation which thankfully worked out. The tamiya just need a layer of varnish over them after drying though as they crack and chip off the plastic easily enough

Second attempt at th stained glass. Liking this one better. Finer detail and a more limited colour range. Think I'll go with this one. Few more highlights and stains and a poster on the base, then I'll fit and fix the stained glass panel in and the base is done!! Larks' skin is done as well - just need to finish he's eyes and add the tatts then it's on to his cloak and combats. Getting there!!

Soz Guildenstern - I did a breaking test on it to see how tough the Tamiya enamels are(were) - it's kinda fethed now!!!

YOU MONSTER

Post by: Januine
lmao!!!!
the Tamiya clear enamels paint onto the clear plastic no worries but GW/acrylic paints dont - they try adn escape and runaway - so dip your brush in some dish soap before mixing up your colour (the liquid stuff for washing the dishes) you dont need much at all but it fixes the paint so it goes on and stays in place perfectly.
As for the cames (the lead lines in stained glass windows) you'll need a steady hand for this as you need to go over them several times to get a solid non transparent black line. I did the cames on the front side of the window and then the colour on the backside - like the way way they used to paint old cartoon gels/frames.
Gloss varnish both sides after to seal in the paint and prevent the enamels from cracking/chipping off. waitr for a few hours thoughas the enamels take a while to dry
That's basically it for the way I came up with to do them. Comes out pretty cool but it is a bit finicky and needs a steady hand and good brush (for the cames. Dont use \you W&N S7 with the enamels, they'll arse it up). Good luck and hope that helps. I may do a proper pic tutorial later after all is said and done.

Another way to do stained glass which I tried to find on my blog to no avail is by finding a design online that you like then sizing it and printing it out on clear acetate then using a black gel pen (used for scrapbooking) trace the lead lines and it leaves a raised satin black line, this is pretty quick to do as well :-)
*don't mean to hijack Jan, just thought i'd offer a different approach.

aye - tried finding acetate sheets over here but to no avail. Shops either didnt stock them or hadn't a brass-eyed scooby what i was talking about )ah the joys of language barriers). the blister pack plastic has a nice thickness and rigidity to it though you need to get around the surface paint adn ink rejection

Got a bit done on Larks this morning. His skin and tatts are pretty done and got a start on his trousers. They will not be so bright grey in the end - just highlighted up bright to start and then will be shadowed down a bit with a few final glazes. Trying to get that creeped out jittery feel that Larks always had (well, at least before Gereon!!)
Clipped his pin and dry fitted him into the vignette base (oh that's totally finished now and off the desk so I don't try and do anymore and feth it up!!) - looking good

Terrain looks fantastic Januine! Can I ask how you did the door slot holders? I really like how they turned out! As someone who needs to paint a similar sort of base for my space marine, any help would be appreciated
91816
Post by: Januine
Cheers ckig the door bases were metals, washes, powders, technicals, drybrush, technicals
Metals - to get the base colour down - on top of black spray coat I drybrushed warplock bronze then ghenna gold then necron compound.
Washes - washed everything with nuln then added spots of agrax and coelia greenshade
Powders - different earthy and rusty FW weathering powders then fixed them with purity seal
Technical paints - typhus corrosion in the corners and recesses. Ryza rust on top of that (or maybe the other way around)
Drybrushed lightly in places with ironbreaker to show scratches chips through to the metal
Final technicals - half of them got BFTBG and the other half got hot glue gun gore strands which was then painted with nurgles rot
That's about it

Post by: ckig
Very informative and helpful! Thanks Januine! GW washes and Technicals are great.
91816
Post by: Januine
No worries. Glad it was helpful. The main thing is just building up colours and depth to the bases so they look the part. The technicals at the end just place them into the game a bit more

Hobbying in Korea.....can be a little frustrating at time. It's just not big over here (ha - understatement of the century) - there's only one GW stockist in the whole country for instance. Get bitz and materials for basing/dios et al is not easy and a lot of 'repurposing' skills become a big requisite. But I get by - lol. The insane import tax makes ordering in stuff a bit of a no no as well; anything over $150 US gets hit with a 30% customs tax so FW lovlieness gets the boot. Ah well.....

So my painting area and hobby area has been getting on my wick recently. It needs a good reorganising, sorting and all that. Have decided to have at it and totally redo the whole thing. Here's how it looks at the mo
Paint are all in those wee drawer units to the right and drives me nuts rooting around trying to find the right one even though they're semi organised by colour. Immediate painting glass shelf at the back and so on. The monitor never gets used as its not compatible with my laptop.
Decided first thing needed was some proper paint racks which then led me to ordering these........
100 of them......ordered off eBay......which arrived today. Yup - in for a penny, in for a pound as they say. On the same day also ordered one rack from Modularterrain in Spain which holds up to 50 bottles of varied sizes which has been dispatched and Is currently winging its way here and 2 dropper bottle racks from Back2Bas-ix, who have so far (acc to my order on their website) done feth all with my order except take the money. 'Processing' my arse.
Anywho - that's what's going on. Hopefully decanting 70+ GW paints into the dropper bottles won't send me too far into the abyss!!
The hedgehog couldn't care less......
And as usual the dog wonders what the feth I'm up to and if there will be any food for her in the whole deal!!

I'd be tempted to cancel the b2b rack and get hobbyzone.pl ones - I just replaced my b2b stuff with hobbyzone, sooooo much better
Shame they don't do acrylics though

Hmmmm - just had a wee look. Very nicely priced! Not mad keen on the design but totally functional and price is bloody excellent. I'll give b2b till monday to get a move on. They were on holiday till tuesday just past apparently. If nothing happening by Monday - cancel cancel time

Either way, swapping citadel jars to bottles is the best thing I have done. Don't forget an agitator and some flo-aide, stop dri while you are at it!

Aye - just did a couple bottles to see how easy/pain in the arse it was gonna be. Liquitex flow aid and plastic BBs at hand. Piece of cake. Hopefully get the lot done by the end of the weekend. Realsiing I'm running low on a few different paints though......balls....more shopping to be done....lol

Sorry, my IT guy self is being triggered. Why doesn't the monitor work on your laptop? I bet with the right adapters, you'll be watching Netflix while painting in no time.
91816
Post by: Januine
My laptop is fairly new, the monitor isnt. HDMI plug on the laptop, monitor is the old 15(?) pin. I got an adapter but still no joy - spent an afternoon trying to get it to work but even with the adapter doesnt want to work. something to do with the freq or something. really annoying. :/

I stuffed up and printed labels for them instead of using the existing labels...
They also won't be big enough for the big bottles of shade, which is a bummer
91816
Post by: Januine
Not sure if I'll bother decanting the bottle of wash/shade. Haven't really decided yet as there's no problem with them and the wash gumming up around the collar. Just transferring base and layers for now

Post by: Januine
@ EDC - cheers fella. I'm still decanting the paints - just doing a few at a time. It's gonna be a while yet till my new paint racks arrive so I'm in no really hurry. Decanting is turning out to be pretty easy....except for Dawnstone......Dawnstone was a complete ass!!!
Anyhow...... Calling these 3 boys done now. Happy how they turned out. Managed to blend that odd ripped floor that Brother Scipio is having at into the resin base well enough.
With those 3 finished, I started on The Nurse. Nothing major - just rebased the skin and started sketching in the shadows. Need to get my skates on with this one as she my entry for this month's comp

Up early this morning to continue on the nurse. Bit more work on the skin - building and strengthening the shadows and tones. Taking a break from the skin now but will add some stronger zen highlights later. Onto her leather coat - reinforced some of the strongest point highlights with white and started laying down initial glazes. Love this fig. Keep finding more little cool and hidden details

Got a little more done on our lady of mercy here. Finished off the feathers and added a little texture to them and made a start on the metal tank and exhaust on her side. Liking how the metals are looking so far. I do love playing with Metallics

Hmmm - Not much love for 'The Nurse' eh....she probably not everyone's cup of tea I guess. I'm loving painting her actually - trying out some new things and its refreshing painting something really quite different to what I usually do.
Anywho... in other news - busy weekend ahead (save any mad gak popping up and brexiting my plans )
First of my new paint racks arrived so need to get that built up - oohhhhh arts'n'crafts time - yay!!!
bigger than I thought it would be
Then need to get the last third or so of the GW paints decanted......it's been......cathartic actually - who knew?!!!
And more arts'n'crafts - turn this pile into a vignette base for the nurse.....plan is in my head but it's gonna be tricky.....need to do some sketching/plans first I think
Glad the weekend has arrived - that was one gakky, icky, gakinfested week. Have a great weekend everyone and hobby on mes amis

Today though is a day for building some stuff - namely a vig base for the nurse. Could be the most tricky one I've done yet......

ooooooooooooo spiral stairs. Is she shoving someone down the stairs?
91816
Post by: Januine
nah - there may be a few point details on the stairs though. kinda feeling my way through here - still a shaky on how i'm going to get these stairs right as they are made from metal grating and not easier to work plasticard...... I-Beam girder work is done though. Onto the wall next

Post by: Januine
Should be pretty cool when all done. Need to attack the spiral stairs yet which is gonna take some delicate pinning And that clear plastic rod is not the easiest to drill into. Then onto treating the wood, adding a pool and other stuff.
This might put it into better perspective

91816
Post by: Januine
Cheers All this was the trickiest build yet. Usually the base I make are floor based so wanted to do something suspended. Was a bit fiddley at times - making the interlocking girders/I-beams and locking them on to the wall and those fething steps but has come out grand and not wonky which I was afraid of. Painting starts tomoro. Lots of ideas to put in for that still need to actually finish the bloody nurse as well!!! And I've got ......3 days!!! Oh goody!!!!
91816
Post by: Januine
Snuck home from work at lunchtime to get a little painty painty in (Tuesdays; 4 hour lunch break - I'd be mad not to ) and Mr Postman delivered my new paint racks. Buildy builds and we've finally got the hobby area sorted and from this .......
To this.......
So much better now. Still have about a dozen paints to decant but that's easy enough.
Did get the base metals down on the base as well. Next comes the filthification!!!!

Cheers Az. Haven't made stairs before so decide to start at the deep end and so spiral ones. Had to actually do some ........maths!!!! Eww. Just need to weather it now, attach to the plinth and fill the pool! Have a few little.....bits to add at the end too very happy so far. 2 days to get it And the nurse finished up......bugger :/

Post by: Januine
Wednesday halfday. Waheeey. Made a solid start on the weathering, grime and rust. Usually I'd do this with weathering powders but they're out due to the crazy humidity here at the mo and therefore I can spray seal them as usual. So haven't to do it the brush way. Working out nicely I think. Gotta stop for now to take the hound to the vet.
Cheers for looking in, hope you like the progress

Should hopefully get all done in time. It's the final touches where I start faffing about and burning time !!!

Post by: Paradigm
Splendid piece of terrain there, should frame the model nicely. Does the Nurse have its own base, or will it go directly on the vignette?
91816
Post by: Januine
She does come with her own base but it's pretty naff so I'll mount her directly onto the vig base and the original base will go into the 'bases' drawer!!
Just finished doing all the weathering and rusting. had to do it all by brush as with this weather the weathering powders are a no no. 30min job has just hit about 3 hours! but ....i much prefer the result. very very happy with it. next......time for a little bloodwork methinks - have to take the scissors to the dog's toothbrush again

90% done, at last of the top half. Bit more blood splatter and then onto the bottom half plinth. Photo is a bit gak but you get the idea

I have to agree with AoV, that is one f'd up fig! Genuinely disturbing, which is not something I would say often, even with all the OTT 40K stuff I see on here all the time.
I love the base (it's spot-on for creepiness) and The Nurse herself is splendidly done. The only thing I found myself wanting was another figure on the stairs, reeling back in utter horror as she spins around and fixes her gaze upon him.
