Those of you who've been with the thread a while know I have a pension for objective markers. I resurrected an old objective marker show-off thread so if you'd like to take a look at the combined "glory" of my objective marker collection... you can check it out here. (it's only a 1-page thread at the moment so the link takes you to the OP) Feel free to post your own there, would love to see what other's have been up to.

Post by: Gitsplitta
I like making objectives because there's so much freedom to it... You can build *anything* you want and really let your imagination be your guide. You can go get bits from armies you don't have and build something you'd never be able to for your own army. It's a blast!! Plus it really adds to the gaming environment. Just makes it more fun.

I believe I did mention we were missing out on a local DA player
Well guess what. Last night I ran into an old highschool buddy of mine, Tim Korklewski, who returned to the area (WI Dells). He is the one that got me into 40K some 15 years ago. He was big into Dark Angels when he was living down in FL. Still has them, though he prefers Maulifaux and Warmachine/Hordes.

In case anyone's interested... I did grade out my units on the last battle report (keep forgetting to do this). Here's the link in case you've lost track of it. Mantis Warriors vs. Tau, 1500 pts. My Mantis Warriors have another game tomorrow night vs. dajobe's Imperial Guard. 2000 pts, which is pretty much the point at which my current army works as good as it's going to get. Still have to proxy my LS Storms (got to get those done!) and a couple of sternguard... but otherwise I'm fully painted and operational. Hopefully, I'll remember my camera so I can do up a bat rep.

Woah, are you telling us your Ironclad actually achieved something in a game, other than being a melta/railgun/lascannon magnet ?
Great !
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Yeah! I was kind of miffed at his initial failure in shooting, but then I did a little mental re-checking are realized it was only a single melta-gun shot... so I should probably cut him a break. He *should* have died in the tau shooting phase of turn 2 (before he did any damage), wyfox just got really unlucky and either missed or failed to penetrate. Thank God for AV 13! I've got to learn to free up some points so he can carry one or two HK missiles IF I want him to have an impact in his initial shooting phase. Otherwise I should have him pop smoke to increase the chances of his surviving into a turn he can assault in and not worry about the shooting so much.

To be fair, I like to blame the dice too often when the fault lies in my own mistakes. Rolling 3 one's Back-2-Back to pentrate was really just a flashy straw man. In realty, the dread not dying had more to do with my list building than luck. Even with my pathfinders increasing my 3 railcannons BS to 5 and the dread lacking cover, I only had a 66% of blowing an AV 13 threat up ( AV 14 would be even worste)...that is simply not good enough at 1500 points.
As one person already pointed out, having a second broadside would have helped...of course 80 points for another single strength 10 shot would have stripped significant functionality from my other units . But I could have switched out a missle pod for a fusion blaster (melta gun) and added a target lock (allowing the model in the unit to split fire) to each of the crisis suit squads for minimal points. Sorry for missing this. So a small exclaimer: I am not an experienced tau player. With that out of the way, I can tell you what I have seen from experienced tau players and that is that they don't sink alot of points into thier Devil Fish. Mostly, they use them to ferry around (ie keep alive) a min squad of scoring fire warriors. To that end they give them disruption fields and keep to cover till late in the game. In KP missions don't deploy the gun drones, let them die with the boats so that they don't give up KP (I wasn't aware of that in our game).

dajobe and I had a wonderful game last night. He had more than his share of misfortunes and kept a smile on his face the whole night. Nice army, looked great on the table. I guarantee you I will never "own" him again. (That's the thing about my build... it works on people *once*... just once.) Now that he knows my tricks our next game should be very competitive.
I'll be doing a battle report including a little story. In the mean time, as a teaser... my favorite shot of the day.
Evening light streaming through the windows of my FLGS, silhouetting the chaos mantis warrior (objective marker) against the walls of an adobe house in the middle of the gaming table. dajobe saw this and pointed it out... good catch man.

I dont view this battle as a horrible tragedy, but found a strategy that didnt work, hopefully it doesnt take me 10000 to find that though...and the reason my list is fairly upgraded is that 1)in the past i have gotten by very good on the list and 2)i dont have any primer in madison and so have no way to paint any other tanks really, so will probably have to wait a while before i can expand the list.
also, are winter guard armies common? im gonna be pissed if they are because i thought that mine was sort of original, that would be a buzzkill

Post by: Gitsplitta
Well, it is interesting that the things he doesn't like about the old MWs are pretty much what I do like and visa-versa with the new ones. I find the drab new scheme quite dull even though he does an excellent job of painting it. That's the cool part about the hobby though... we can have very different views on the same chapter and both come up with something legitimate. Though I imagine GW would like his version much better than mine.

Back OT:
IceAngel just wrote an excellent piece of fiction about the Mantis Warrior I made for him as part of the GMS (Great Marine Swap). I can't tell you all how honored I feel to have someone of Ice's talents spend time writing and developing a charachter based on a model I painted and my chapter which has never had a decent writer attempt anything with it. I encourage you all to read Ice's Ice Angel blog if you get the chance to get the whole story which is quite epic in scope. So, reprinted with permission (and with a pic).... the continuing saga of Sergeant Inushi, on detail with the Ice Angels.
IceAngel wrote:After a slow deep intake of air Inushi ended his meditation. While his eyes were closed he ran through the ancient Mantis Warrior rites of awakening. He breathed through his nose assessing the various scents of marines and machine. He listened to the strange rumble of the vessel he was aboard and the sounds of his fellow astartes. The deep rasp of Pyrox, the cavernous inhales of Aquilum, and the near silent wisps of sound from Reven told him they still sat in the same positions. Slowly he opened his right eye. Then he opened his left. Without moving his head he examined his surroundings. The three marines nearest to him all appeared relaxed, deep in reverie, despite the upcoming mission.
Far to his left near the door to the bridge sat Hunzuu and Shar-drasha. Both sat straight up against the wall and wore their helms. They sat across from each other with their hands resting on their weapons. Unlike the other marines the two Ice Angels appeared like traps ready to spring.
With a prayer in his mind Inushi slowly began to stretch out his limbs. He worked his neck, arms, and then torso before stretching his legs and standing up. Throughout this process the other marines awoke and started their own awakening rituals, all except Aquilum. He continued his own deep trance. Inushi cracked a smile as he noticed that even in his meditative state Aquilum’s mouth was twitching as if he was about to speak.
Inushi stepped away from the other marines to an open cargo area next to the exit ramp. The area was large enough for several bikes to park next to each other, but not large enough for a rhino. In this space he drew his katana. He held the hilt of the weapon in his right while resting the blade in the palm of his left. Along the blunt edge were the names of its previous owners, Inushi read each one before stopping at the last name, Darius. He thought back to his mentor for a moment before returning to his inspection.
The blade edge was still razor sharp but marks marred the blades ridge. He thought back on the recent battles with the orks. He envisioned the movements of his blade and concentrated on the attacks or parries that resulted in damages.
The light steps of a marine ended his concentration. Inushi turned around to see Reven approaching. The red armored Blood Angel stopped a few steps away and looked at Inushi’s blade.
“That is a marvelous blade Inushi. “ Reven spoke as he adjusted his golden hair. ”It looks like it has a history.”
Inushi returned to his sword, “It does indeed. There are only a few blades with a history as long as this one left in my chapter.” His gaze returned to the last name on the sword. “Some day I will add my name to its edge and pass it to a new member of the chapter after they have passed their rites.” His words trailed off as the weight of these missions returned to him.
Reven smiled and placed a hand on Inushi’s shoulder. “I’m sure you will.”
Inushi looked into the deep blue eyes of Reven and for once realized how ancient the Blood Angel must have been. They weren’t the vibrant eyes of an initiate or the focused eyes of a trooper, they were the eyes of a commander. For a moment Inushi wanted to ask Reven a hundred questions, but the ork vessel momentarily shook before the engine noise died down.
An emotionless voice echoed in all of their voxes, “Suit up.”
Reven removed his hand and smiled as he reached down for his yellow helmet. Inushi watched the Blood Angel walk away and he realized how little he knew of the venerable marine. With a steel hiss Inushi sheathed his blade, locked it in place, and hooked his helmet on his head. He looked at the marines checking their gear and he vowed that he would learn more about them all. He may not have a lot of time left to do so.

In the dex it's a piece of war gear, but basically it's a kind of attack squig that helps the runtherd control the grot mob... in essence... it eats 1-3, and the grots re-roll their leadership. tipios wrote:So make a grot in to a cybork, and paint hazzard stripes?
In essence, yes. Try to put in dakka colors (black, gold/yellow, white & grey). Yakface is a bad moon nob (and so is Gits actually), so it's a bad moon theme with some extras. wyomingfox wrote:P.S.S. When you going to model up a MW wannabe Vulkan He’stan?

@wyfox: No fluff... there's very little excuse for him in my army... not like Kantor where he fits in nicely with my existing units or fluff (or the White Scarr's guy if I choose to use him). He's just there for power-gaming. Why pretend... it's disengenuous (and I see enough enough of that crap already). @polari: Thanks! Never seen one of those armies.

Yeah, they have their own codex, but its pretty old, they have a captain that can make terminators Troop choices iirc, and one that gives their bikers a 2+ save or something like that for their ravenwing people. I may be wrong on the ravenwing thing though

Hello my friends... been quiet as of late as I have wayyyy too many irons in the fire, big work deadlines and a house to get ready for winter. However... I do have 2 swaps on the workbench and will provide pics after the builds progress beyond a pile of bits. I do have something important to talk with you about. Our Adpeticon team is still down a man. The last search landed Briancj to our little band of merry men destined for Chicago next spring, but we're still short one member. As Adepticon is a major investment in time and money we need to have a team and decent theme in order to make it worth-while (i.e 4 random armies won't cut it). So I've included a copy of the original announcement below. If you think you'd be interested and have the time and financial support to get to Chicago... please PM me with your interest. Many thanks, Gits As I image a number of you know... the big "do" this spring was that I took my Mantis Warriors, along with Solar Lion's Lamenters, Ice Angel's Tiger Claws and his buddy Steve's Executioners to Adepticon to field our 4-man team The Wardens of the Maelstrom. Now for reasons that are beyond anyone's control... we're down two men (Ice and Steve) *and* our alternate (whalemusic360). Which brings me to the following announcement. The Wardens of the Maelstrom are looking for a few good men (or women)... well... one actually... to complete our 4-person team for Adepticon in 2012. Solar_Lion and I would like to stay with the Badab War theme... mainly because neither of us have the luxury of time or money to generate an entirely new army at the standard we want to build/paint to for such a big event. I can think of several thematic options to serve as a basis for forming a team around our two chapters. From best to worst theme-wise they are... 1.The other two rebel armies (Tiger Claws & Executioners) so we basically have the same general team as least year (army list can differ of course... I'm just suggesting the chapters) 2.Two of the "loyal" chapters so we could field a team of two opposing sides during the Badab War. Off-hand I don't know all the chapters involved... some that come to mind are the Fire Hawks, Son's of Medusa, Space Sharks, Minotaurs and Red Scorpions... there are others and we're open to any of them... though the principal opponents of our two chapters would be cool. 3. The two principle enemies of the Lamenters and Mantis Warriors immediately after the Badab war (i.e. tyranids and Red Corsairs). 4. Pick two potential enemies from "the maelstrom" and present it as a pre-Badab War team (could be anyone nearly... dark eldar, pirate orks, chaos, rebel guard). If you think you, or you and a friend might be interested in joining us in Chicago next spring, please send an e-mail to my dakka e-mail account (in my sig). Please do not respond on this thread. Let me know what you've thinking & we'll go from there. In doing so, keep the following in mind: - we'd like teammates who's painting and modeling skills compliment our own - our priorities (in order of importance) are: having fun, fielding a fine looking & cohesive force, playing well - it takes a lot of work to get ready for Adepticon, make sure you know what your getting yourself in to I'm just gauging interest at this point so contacting me is NOT a commitment on your part... just seeing if anyone's interested. Questions are welcome (please PM). The reason I'm asking you to e-mail interest rather than PM is that PMs are too easy to lose track of... however questions can be answered by PM. Contact Ice if you are curious about what Solar and I are like as teammates. Thanks, and again... please don't respond on this thread.... I'm just making the announcement here because I know a lot of folks will see it here. Best, Gits

@Calas: If you make it I'd love to do a pick-up game with you. Our new cyber-squig hound by Mr.Malevolent *is* really awesome... Since that one was the first one done I'm figuring it would go to WM. I'm happy to begin my favorite month of the year by announcing that our Adepticon team has been determined. For the rebels: Mantis Warriors (me) Lamenters (Solar_lion) For the loyalists: chapter TBD (Briancj) Carcharadons (Mr.Malevolent) We are all gleefully discussing chapters and strategies and lists like a giggling bunch of school girls... but as the say; "The game is afoot!" Hope to make progress on the GMS builds this weekend. I do have a 2500 point battle with Eiluj The Farseer and his eldar on Sunday afternoon. I must admit that at 2500 points my army consists of a really good 2000 pts and then a bunch of extra stuff to get me up to 500. But I haven't played eldar (seriously) in 5th edition, so it should be an interesting battle. (anyone have any tips?) I had a tough time getting to 2500 as I'd pretty much filled up my FOC except for the heavy slots... but then realized I'd only painted up one heavy unit (my little dev squad). Anyway, I sorted it out. Guess a should add a predator or something to my "to do" list. Plan on documenting the battle and getting a battle report out soon thereafter. Will put up pics of the builds as they go. Gits

Automatically Appended Next Post:
OK, the head is fixed... when I say "fixed" what I really mean is in an attempt to get the head off, I ripped off one arm, ripped the other in half, and tore the body completely in two.
Head stayed put.
So, I did some major re-building and the GS is now curing. Looks better now. I'm considering placing the gun arm in a down/rest position rather than the up/rest position... we'll see when all the GS is dry and hard and I can do some fiddling. I think it's one of my best gun conversions so far. Never did one with the original combat blade on and I really like it. Going to have to do some of those for myself.
Also made more headway on the Vanguard (the other marine for GS). Got the swords built, still have some work to do on the joints though.

I'm posting the battle report here rather than in a separate thread for reasons which will become all too soon apparent. Well, had a chance to play a 2500 point game vs. Eiluj the Farseer Craft World Eldar today. Nice army, nicely painted. Gawd what a lot of tanks! Anyway, I was looking forward to the battle as I haven't really played eldar in 5th yet and I wanted to see how my army would fare. 2500 pts is a bit... unusual for me as I typically don't like to play that big a game (just too much to keep track of) and my army really optimizes out around 1850-2000... so the last 500 points were just what I had painted rather than some vital component of the force. Basically it's the force you guys are used to seeing with an extra dread, some scouts and a bit of wargear thrown in for good measure. (Pic's are from my son's camera which isn't quite as nice as mine.) My army: Eiluj's army: Told you he had lots of tanks... and a seer council, and Kharandras, lots of fire dragons, etc. We roll up the mission where we each have one objective to control with a spearhead deployment. Eiluj wins the roll to go first. Deployment: Eiluj goes first, picks the best quarter leaving me with very little cover. He makes a parking lot over by his objective while I cower behind the one decent piece of sight blocking terrain in mine. I am trying to stay as far away from his considerable fire power as I can. We both outflank what we can. (blue arrows indicate objectives) Turn 1 The seer council dashes forward to seek shelter in a ruin from which to cause mayhem while the prism cannons take out 1 devastator. In my half of the turn, I sell the farm to try and take out the Seer Council. Pods land flawlessly and my entire army unloads on the council. Libby tries to cast Null Zone but the 3 dice he had to throw to test fail him and he takes a wound. I roll out my shorts and hit and wound with nearly everything but Njal makes *every* saving throw... that is until the Tranquility Veterans took their turn. Between the Iron Clad and the sternguard the seer council is taken down to one warlock! Not perfect, but close enough for government work. Here's a close-up of the boys, basking in the glory of a good day's shooting. Turn 2 Eiluj rolls for his reserves and kharandras and a tank full of striking scorpions comes in behind my lines! The wave serpents move in for the kill. Shooting from Kharandras' ride wrecks one dread guarding my objective while withering fire from the rest of the Eldar kills 3 sternguard. Surviving warlock blows an arm off the Iron Clad and immobilizes it in assault. But... I survive in pretty good shape. And then the store unexpectedly closes... *sigh* (we both messed up & assumed the store would stay open later) So, at the end of turn 1, he had control of his objective and I did not have any scoring units on mine (who'd a thunk it??). Victory Eilujl!! It was fun. Going to be a long, tough battle but I had hopes of putting up a good fight. Planned on charging the sternguard into combat with the last warlock & unloading everything else on Kharandras and his boys. Next time Eiluj.... next time. Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, re-posting this from the "Dakka Monthly" thread. This is an awesome idea for a monthly Dakka e-zine (or whatever you call them) that I've already voluneered to write some short articles for. Too bad you couldn't go further... It would have been an interesting fight.
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Yeah, much as I was *very* uncertain about how I was going to approach the battle, it was shaping up to be interesting. A lot would have ridden on how much damage I did to the Kharandras/scorpion complex in my rear in my half of turn 2 with shooting as I really didn't have much in the way of assault capability back there. To be honest, I didn't really have a victory strategy going in... more of a survival strategy. Deal with the threats as they arrive and hope to hit his objective late with some outflanking units *if* they came in on the right side of the board. Not a great plan, but what the heck... gotta start somewhere.
Finished the re-build of the sternguard. Will clean up the GS on his wrist a bit before I start painting.

Well, since it's for a trade I want to make sure the recipient is happy with the pose. I think the original pose was kind of a sub-conscious thing.... because of my glasses I need to look down my nose to read, so my head is usually pointed above what I'm actually looking at. yes during the Badab war when Huron the Blackheart rebelled so did the mantis warriors due to the fact that they were both garrisoned there though shortly after their defeat they pleaded for mercy most were killed but some were allowed to go on that 1000 year crusade to gain forgiveness on pg 57 of the CSM Codex "903.M41 three other chapters- the mantis warriors, Exicutioners, and Lamenters-pledge thier support to the Astral Claws the rebellion escalates drastically" then "912.M41-Present day- surviving Lamenters. Mantis Warriors, and Executioners found to be redeemable undertake century-long crusades of penitence"

That, I knew about... the Badab War was not during the heresy... it's a relatively modern event. The army I'm modeling are the Mantis Warriors at two different points in history... at the time of the Badab War, and after their crusade and acceptance back into the Imperial fold roughly 100 years later. Basically the beakie stuff is all early period and the insectoid, Mk 7 and 8 is the modern chapter.

Today I received Gits Trade Mini in the mail, and I gotta say, the photos do not do him justice. He is awesome. From the patterns in the wings, to the pose, and the swords. Brilliant!
Gits he arrived in perfect condition. No breakage.
Inspires me to paint a small force of Mantisis... Mantisi? Mantises?

@vent: I'm so happy he arrived in good condition! I was worried after Arakasi's arrived in a couple of pieces but I think I did a better job of packing yours. I'm so sorry for the long delay in your getting him but glad he's finally home where he belongs. I'd be thrilled to see you do some Mantis Warriors! (no idea of the proper plural). There's a lot of room for interpretation so you could really stretch your legs a bit.
@MOrdain: Thanks very much for attempting to tackle "the beast". If you get through it... color me impressed. Actually color me impressed for just trying it! So glad you've joined us, please chime in at any time.
@Tyranic Marta: Welcome back Tyranic! Glad you like what you've seen... there's lots to do so they'll be no shortage of new models.
Speaking of which ... it's quiet now but there will be plenty of modeling to come.
On the docket:
- 3 sternguard
- 1 vanguard
- 1 never-to-be-repeated tranquility vanguard
- 2 LS Storms

And now you've got me all excited about how the Vet will look finished and how my Vanguard is going to turn out!

Glad you think so GS, you're the important opinion here. Also, I'm curious as to how the "1 never-to-be-repeated tranquility vanguard" will look. Who is that one intended for?
Let me 'splain. No... that would take too long, let me sum up... 1. Figure is for Yggs, friend and major contributor to the blog who's been waiting for the better part of a year for his guy. 2. Yggsie wants a Tranqullity Vet. Vanguard, corrupted by chaos. It'll be unique. 3. The top 5 reasons why the figure won't be repeated are... (drum-roll please) #5) getting a vanguard figure to look right is a major pain-in-the-a** #4) getting the tranquility pattern right is... again... a major PITA #3) Yggsie wants him Nurglified, which includes modeling modifications to the tranquility pattern (my idea). This will completely shatter my GS comfort zone into a million neurotic pieces. #2) there are some other significant modeling and fluff restrictions/considerations that further complicate the project And the number 1 reason I won't make a figure like this again is... #1) IF... and it's a bloody big IF... I can pull off all the above with grace, I *will* have a nervous breakdown and need at least two weeks off from any painting or modeling... perhaps more... to recover. That being said... I love a challenge. The ensuing down-time is why I'll be doing both of your swap marines before I attempt his... though I might get his build done before I completely finish the painting of yours. Once the tranquility vanguard is done, I won't do any more of the combination... just too much stress wrapped up in one figure. This relates to why I'm so behind in my trades (there are still two that I've owed longer than the one for Yggs). I have to wait to be inspired to do a good job, I get ideas... roll them around in my head for some weeks, maybe kick them out on the blog to get feedback, maybe not... some times I just have to let things sit. I'm not a professional artist so I don't have the kind of creativity, training or skill that can be turned on at need... I have to wait for it, coax it along & hope my skills can meet the challenge. Top it off with the fact that time painting is time away from my family... and things get pretty slow in Gitsville. The problem with doing super-fancy marines is that everybody (of course) wants them... not the normal guys. The few times I've gotten to do a normal guy... it was a welcome relief. I can turn out a really nice looking figure in just a few days! Is that how normal people do it?! *whinefest ends* And now you've got me all excited about how the Vet will look finished and how my Vanguard is going to turn out!
I'll get to working on him pretty soon. I'm going to build two sternguard needed to fill out my own unit and airbrush all three together... then I'll finish yours up and set mine aside to be finished later. I really like the way your's looks and you'll be seeing him reprized (with some variation) in one of the figures I do for myself. P.S. When will you be getting round to painting all those 'Nids I sent you?
Good question. Have a brood lord to finish up first. Then probably jump into the trygon, but I won't touch them until I've fulfilled my end of the trade.

The tranquility camo thing being annoying was one of the things I noticed when I made my swap for Alfndrate, it takes a lot of time to make it look right, and yes people want them more than they want the regular guys. When I get back to the states it may be possible for me to make some camo space sharks again for swaps.

When you're chainsawing wood - do you actually pretend you're weilding a mighty chainsword and decapitating your foes? (I would if I had one - have to make do with a humble axe for my head - er - I mean log splitting)
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
If you used a chainsaw with any regularity... you would instantly realize how a) impossible and b) suicidal a chainsword would be. Imagine the 1 in 6 gets hot roll for the plasma gun changing to a 6 in 6 roll.... that's a chainsword.

Does your chainsaw explode every time you use it?
Gitsplitta wrote:You've obviously never used a chainsaw with any regularity...
Maybe a dozen times in my life, not very often but I didn't have anything explode.
Maybe a chainsword wouldn't be anything like a chain saw we use today. I've never used any super fancy surgical saw but there are saws that can cut through just about anything, the thing that always bothered me about the 40k chainsword was that I always that it'd be easier to maintain a powersword then it would a chainsword. Why wouldn't everyone use power swords? I understand that they are special but I think for marines that should be standard equipment. Obviously not for rules purposes but for fluff purposes. They are the Emperor's ultimate warriors, they can't spare 1000 power swords per chapter? Then again the 40k universe is in a bit of an economical depression, lol.

Chainsword, the true power blade. Using it as an actuall weapon, well I guess if an overwhelming insect race was attempting to devour my house then I would probally think it a good idea. The backbite that would most likely decapitate me would be a better death than insect digestion.

People remove limbs from themselves & die every year from improper use of chain saws. Takes two hands and a concerted will to keep one under control, and that's just exerting downward pressure on a stationary object like a log. A whirling 3' long chainsaw wielded during battle where it could buck, skitter, jam the suddenly release or be deflected would be as deadly to the wielder as to the opponent. The person wielding it would be rendered legless or at the least crippled within 30 seconds... perhaps less. Automatically Appended Next Post: Well, a number of things got in the way of painting... but I will show the sternguard build. I'm going to lay odds that most people won't like this one... I'll also lay odds that I'm not going to change it as I quite like it! Though I might add a supporting chain from near the barrel of the gun to the marine's body.

Heavy flamers for the win. Dont change the model it is great the way it is, but i do beleive the chain would add an aspect of weight to the weapon and improve the overall appeal of the model.
34329
Post by: dantay_xv
The heavy flamer is nice, I like the idea that the arm is beefed up to support the weight of it.
I did a similar conversion a while back, I cut the arm away before the elbow, where it comes out of the sleeve or whatever it would be called, the added a cut down marine arm.
I could see how this wouldnt work for an RT model as their arms are quite skinny, so I like the idea that you are using the top of the arm as a template whith which to build up a GS shoulderpad.
IF and only if you were considering changing the pose you could use the RT left arm which holds the bolter and position it on the stem which sticks oout above the heavy flamer nozzle.
The chain would give also be a good idea, and give him some stability or I fear that withou a suspensor unit even he would struggle to lug that thing around, I imagine him letting the enemy run towards him and at the last moment scream some expletives as he waves the Heavy flamer (one handed) from side to side incinerating everything near him and doing something cool with his other arm
Great job Gits Automatically Appended Next Post: PS, in ther UK I believe hat when we complete our census, a you need 10,000 people to register as being "something" before it is classed as a religion, otherwise it would be considered a cult., so get 10,000 to people to say that they are acolytes of the Splitta, the Lord of Madness and you can be a high priest of your own religion!!

Post by: Gitsplitta
Thanks Miss Dee, I had forgotten... I'll try to remember tonight (heading off to work soon). If you don't see anything in say... 10 hours, feel free to remind me again.
I'm glad folks like the pose. Even I admit that it looks odd, but with such a massive weapon (it's a terminator heavy flamer), I felt that even a marine would struggle a bit and need specially modified armor to accommodate. I'll build some kind of reinforcement into the armor, either a chain or hydraulic support or something. I think having the other arm hanging straight down as if carrying a heavy fuel canister helps with the illusion of weight as well.
I toyed with a couple of other options for creating the heavy flamer... but this had such a good feel to it that it was hard to pass up on. Love to pose of those FW legs too. No more hunched over beakie! Walkin' tall... dealin' flamey death as he goes.
In the U.S., all you have to be is a nutter & you can register yourself as your own religion.

Post by: Reaper Man 2020
I don't think it is big enough! How about a heavy flamer off a vehicle!? I like the legs, are they forge world?
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Yeah, I think they're the "Iron Armor" legs... I just liked the poses and for my sternguard having older pieces of armor here or there is perfectly legit. I could strip one of the flame cannons off of a land raider and have him tote that around.... hmmmm.... food for thought there. To answer a point dantay brought up earlier. The shoulder pad on the flamer arm is actually very close to the correct size for a beakie shoulder pad. I filed it down from the "inner pad" that the normal terminator pad would have gone over so that their profiles matched. I might take a little GS and extend is slightly down the arm as I think it could be a mm longer or so, but I suspect once I get everything painted and you can see the distinction between the arm holding the gun and the gun, it won't matter quite as much.

Oh my, he's doing the "Haters Gonna Hate" walk
34329
Post by: dantay_xv
No you are right it probabvly wouldnt matter so much, I kinda guessed what you were aiming at when I saw the gs disk for the chapter symbol. Do you have plans for the heavy flamer arm, such as, mek bits to make it a bionic arm or a harness of some type?
How was your time with the family? We had a great weekend at Haggerston Castle near Berwick, was nice to get some family bonding time.
The flamestorm cannon should go on a rig like the conversion beamer that hiots made, either that or a wheeled/ tracked carrier as even a space marine would strain to carry that beast.
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Actually I was being sarcastic/ironic with the flamestorm cannon thing... make one hell of a codpiece gun though, eh?
Well, there's not too much I can do for the arm as it's all mounded in. I suppose I could add some mechical superstructure on the outside... but I'm not sure how that would look, plus it means that removing the weapon for maintenance or fuel changes would be nearly impossible. I kind of figuring that when necessary, a button push releases the marine's arm from the flamer completely (it essentially unclamps), so he's free to move both arms... he quickly replaces the fuel canister then inserts his arm into the cradle and a second button push causes the weapon to re-clamp around his arm securely.
Let me put some thought into it dantay... might come up with something plausible.
8723
Post by: wyomingfox
So by "Iron Warriors", do you mean that the legs came from the Choas Space Marine box set?
34329
Post by: dantay_xv
The Fglamestorm certainly would do
Actually, the cicular section at the elbow might be the answer., put a cog on it or paint it as a button or some such and you have your release mechanism, paint the struts silver like pistons and you have a support device to help the gunner with the weight of it. Maybe just add a cable to the backpack to power the harness, it might ot even need that.
I know I sound a bit critical, but i actually do like it a lot The pose is cool, i can almost imagine him puffing out his cheeks as he lugs it around.

I just keep thinking about the actual soldiers who used to lug around the huge brownings and such in WW II and beyond. My impression was they tended to be pretty well muscled in order to bear the extra burden. Here you have the armor and implants to help... but even for a space marine that's a HUGE gun... so making him look like he's having to really work to haul the gun around seems reasonable.

What can I say, your model inspired me .
Oh, so you purchased some of those "ancient" style armour kits from FW. That's cool.

I like it. the legs should offset some bulk. I'm guessing you see more continuity when painted. My only suggestion would be to tilt the head down a little. I'm thinking this gives the impression of him pulling backwards.

BTW Gits, a new(ish) store called the Labryth has (re (re))opened up in Baraboo down on the square. They are setting aside Thursdays as a wargaming night and are trying to get a 40K league set up. My buddy Tim (DA player who I mentioned before) is trying to spearhead it. Seeing as you are like 15 minutes away or so, you and your sons might be interested.

Hey Gits you should convert the item in the other hand to a miners lunch box, would suit the pose perfectly lol
I do like it though, a chain would be a good addition to give more emphasis to the weight of the weapon.

Why not use the PAGK flamers?

I'm liking that Gits, just think it needs a chain from the handle/hook thing over the nozzles going back to the shoulder pad. Those legs are pretty sweet.

Nah, this gives you the perfect incentive to hurry up and paint that fig. Muwahahaha! Besides...I owe you for that "Cock-A-Roach" comment earlier . Automatically Appended Next Post: Gitsplitta wrote:Very... please throw my name into the hat. Do they have a mailing list?

Mainly because this is what I had on hand. And I like the over-the-top size of the thing... gives the figure presence, and humor. monkeytroll wrote:I'm liking that Gits, just think it needs a chain from the handle/hook thing over the nozzles going back to the shoulder pad. Have a couple of ideas rolling around in my head, unfortunately the best one would probably take a while for the bits order to come through... but who knows... I may have something lying about. wyomingfox wrote:Nah, this gives you the perfect incentive to hurry up and paint that fig. Muwahahaha! Besides...I owe you for that "Cock-A-Roach" comment earlier .
Truth is truth... being sore about it doesn't change anything. Gitsplitta wrote:Better, they have a Facebook Page .

Boy, I dunno wyfox... from their facebook page it doesn't look like they're particularly interested in 40k... more like card games. Think your friend might be fighting an uphill battle.

Take the " beak" and lower it more towards his chest , not much. The current head position gives the impression that the figure is leaning back. From my perspective of the picture.

I like it. It's a chunky, spicy meatball of a flamer.

I agree, thus the meme. Then again, I love the pose that the tilted head helps to create, thus the meme .

The head positioning *was* a conscious decision on my part. I was going for that... "I have the GodEmperor's own flamer... so wtf do you think YOUR going to do about it." attitude.

One of the store's previous interitions (back in the days) happened to sell GW merchandise. The owner is trying to diversify again, and their seems to be some interest from the current customer base. In truth, I was into CCG ( MTG) way before miniatures -- as was my friend Tim. Anyways, might be an opportunity to grow something local .

Oh, now there's an idea... I could convert that fuel cell into a little Webber grill... Yep, these will be regular sternguard. Have a couple more to do as I'm trading on of my combi-plasma guys. Think I might try out converting a couple of the Chapterhouse combiweapons so I'll have two guys in the squad who's load out I can easily change from melta to plasma to flamer.

I bought some of those CH combi-weapons as well. Haven't used them yet and honestly I don't know if I ever will. After getting them in hand, I wasn't too keen on thier appearance. If you want some more, I would probably sell you mine.

Today's build modifications: strap (while the rest of the gaming world would make the strap out of green stuff, I hammer mine out of copper wire) and a new head... While I generally dislike bare-headed marines, I like this one... personalizes him a little bit & should be fun to paint. Looks like there's a couple of mold lines I need to clean up yet...

The strap makes a big difference IMO. Helps balance the model. He's still a pimp though .

It must have been the old head that gave him the "dear god this gun is heavy" look. Flat copper looks good as well.
