well...jackal recently provided me with some ideas and helpful advice as to how to get for me semi noob in painting some acceptable looking powerweapons... so i went and looked for some minis in my collection ...and i looked ...and looked...and looked... and didn´t find and guardsmen that atm had any powerweapons i wanted to paint...
then i said to myself: "well you do own a coupla space marines ...take a look at them for once"
and so i did^^...
took in fact three of them and here they are...
that one was made with mithril silver, then a badab black wash...followed by a assurmen blue and then even a yellow ink wash over everything... for me the best looking so far...
that one here was a bit more difficult...as above badab black over mithril sliver...then a green felshg wash of old citadel...followed by the afore mentioned yellow ink... it came out OK-ish for me...
and this one here is just mithril silver, badab black and then the yellow ink... looks interesting... as if he is wuileding a yolk sword but i guess a second treatment with another wash or some edge highlighting could be helpfull here...
but it proved to me the usefullness of jackals suggested methode... just needs some more experimenting tho on my part^^
Nice mate Try to keep the washes after black the same and you get a nice crystal look to them.
Also, remember to go sparing with the black wash.
Its just to mute the silver a bit.
Sorry mate, got distracted With the washes after the black, use 2 layers of a single wash.
So, 2 asuraman blue or 2 thrakka green or 2 baal red etc.
This keeps the colours from mixing.
No really at the time Jackal's talk about GS started there was an extremely similar conversation in the other thread. To the point where it actually looked like his posts had been deleted.
no LDD... there is a thing called positive encouragement... you are doing it wrong... hitting people with clubs like the monkey you always show up as is not a way to positivly encourage someone... bad monkey...bad monkey
by the way... on childes thread iirc the idea formed to get a unit fully painted in a certain amount of time... well i joined the fun... nbow childe, jackal and cappy and maybe even more peeps have joined in on the fun and as a result i started to paint something else^^...but fear not.. i will complete my redcoats soon... tho i now begun in earnest to paint this small collection of mins here...
started with the primed ones in this pic... others may follow after these then... 11 minis i have started on painting so far... basecoat of blue aplied and worked on some white detailbasecoats as well... later on to be yellowed... pics of my work will follow tomorrow as i think with these darker minis i need full daylight to actually show anything at all^^
lol... that one almost sounds as if it is more orky encouragement
and yes urban mammoth i think they are... it is the felix freedom fighters... that will be the "gang" for one future day for my son felix (6yrs) so we can have a game of muda one day... and his favorite colors are yellow mostly and blue... so i went with that blue foundation atm and added the new white as a basecoat for the soon up coming yellow...after that i am a bit unsure as to what to add next... i thought i´d drybrush them with ice blue on the blue areas and do hazard stripes on the yellow details...what do you think?
i hope not... as a six year old i hope that he has at least another ten years to get to that stage ...blimey they are quicker in these things nowadays tho but that wouldn´t be quick anymore but donwrights rushing it
Viktor von Domm wrote:i hope not... as a six year old i hope that he has at least another ten years to get to that stage ...blimey they are quicker in these things nowadays tho but that wouldn´t be quick anymore but donwrights rushing it
The speed you run at it there is a good chance he will make man hood before you finish anything LOL
this is fr the motivation competition on childes thread... not really steampunk related in any way... as it is a unit for my son...the felix freedom fighters...
and here are the first WIP pics to proove i am still painting^^

actually you are totally spot on with these... that was what i was thinking too!!! and beside... i have a hummer template too... could be the command transport then...
ah... but these aren´t viktorians then... more like a totally modern police force... highly equiped to the teeth.... all from the top shelf and elite in trainings and ruthless in their deeds... no gentlemen at all^^
Viktor von Domm wrote:end of the world... and me without any finished army... nawww... can´t be happening!!!
At this rate vik, with as many side projects you have going, I think you'll finish an army about when the end of the world happens, no matter how far away that is
Fully painted? Hell, I'd settle for a full army. Sitting on 1750pts of chaos atm and can't seem to get any real work done. Mayhaps though my titan legion will defend me in the armageddon?
I know what you mean, I thought I finished my raven guard army, then I got a large section of it, turned it to heresy-era, bought a few more kits, thought I was done then, and I'm still wanting more One day I will finally peel away from my beloved space marines and properly focus on the guard I've been planning for the best part of two years... one day...
What is an army when it is beaten and destroyed ? Surly it is finished then
that got you another quote in my sig...!!! that is so much insight into the subject!!! priceless!
and just for your all information...
yesterday i had a meeting with all these new parents of the class i soon will attend and help to get their kids to grow up to be good school boys and girls... it was very interresting but also very exhausting so i was in no mood to stop by and add to the banter yesterday... i was totally talked empty so to say
and yes shrike... go to your lil guardsmen... they need you!!!
it was just that the meeting was sterting at six in the evening and went to 10 ...which isn´t really my chatty time anymore...and mind you...all that awful smiling you have to do is really taking the energy out of you...

My ex was a primary school teacher (as well as an unbalanced psychopath ) and she hated the fact of pretending to be nice to the kids and parents …….. mind you she hated being nice full stop
Viks great with kids it said so in his police record

They are trying to make you feel at ease, then they will strike in a pact you will be left helpless
I was once an IT teacher for a primary school for the IT course I was doing.
It helps if you don't realise that you're basically being asked the same question constantly. It's also quite easy to see the difference in the classes where the teacher makes use of computers in class more often then others.
Can't really buy another girl a drink with the wife in the next room, no offense Bubble.....
Automatically Appended Next Post: Hey, Jackal, I only pass the buck on buying drinks cause I quit drinking ten years ago. But boy did I have my fun times at the Pubs in thUK when I did drink......
I'm underage, so instead of getting drunk I'll eat a hell of a lot of skittles and then maybe combine diet coca cola and mentos in my mouth to compensate
so.... put your drinks if you have them on the table... you need your hands free... to steady yourself or to just madly aplaud for these awesome looking bitz courtesy of RS Jake...!!!
in the following pics i will present to you the still untouched pieces i got as a very friendly gesture from jake so to kind of test them and i will do that with the utmost pleasure...really my heart leaped up in my body as i saw the envelope!!!
so here are the pics...later in that post some questions to jake tho...
steampunk guns...
when i tomorrow clean them up from the very thin flash i will show you way better pics than these...!
the nuka bottles...still on a twin sprue so to say^^

well the pics don´t to the artistic deed of jake enough credit... i had it seems some serious lighting issues but as i said better ones tomorrow!
vy the way jake.... the helmeted female heads are these all yours? the googles look so damn fine!!! and the assasin with the small antenna ...super cool!!! also the brown bare one... my fingers itch like hell to get the GS out and start making a cool hairdo for that one!!!
and well as i said above... usually i am not really that fond with all those endless skulls all over the range of GW but you sir ...you may actually change my view on that! if someone wnats to do traitor guard... or a customized steel legion...these heads are a perfect fit in my view!!! really to have seen the whole range already in your thread was all good... but now as i see the stuff here in the resin "flesh" i have to say... wow... way better... your casting seems to produce a very good quality that other major companies should investigate in!!!
cheers, vik
soon about to start a project with all that cool stuff!!!!

Vik, I am so glad you got them! The helmeted female heads: The faces are from Hasslefree minis, but the helmets I made. The bare female head is all mine, have fun with her! I'm glad you liked the skull helmets! I mostly sent them to you because you said you didn't like skulls, and I wanted to change your mind!
And now you know the scale of the things I sculpt. They look so much bigger in pictures, it's hard to get a feel for the scale, even if you are familiar with the size of Cadians, it's completely different to sculpt them. But I love it, and I hope to be able to send you some more stuff at some point!

shrike you may not be able to see my quotes because of how your monitor is zoomed, because when i zoom in, the size dosent change, the boxes do meaning more or less of my sig being shown
update time... i had to think and rethink my porper use of jakes cool looking steampunk guns... the initial plan was to use the wargames factory greatcoat trooper bodies... but the arms i then had to use never really matched up with the shoulder section of the bodes and i had to cancel that idea... instead i then took out my second plan and started converting empire militia men...
for the gun wileding arms i used a blunderbuss holing combination i (in my view) cut up quite neatly and left enough space to pace jakes steampunk gun inside without hurting the cool bit in any way,.. that was my intention and i am proud that this was achieved... i couldn´t have beared with the fact of hurting those guns^^...
currently i am contemplating if i attach a backpack if vic´s lead scotsmen
as a means to suply power to the gun... your thoughts?
well, also i think i finished my first complete mini of the felix freedom fighters... the arbites unit for my son...it is still rather dark in it´s scheme but i think i am not able to come up with any suitable ideas to get more detial and contrast to the mini...
Those men and the walkers from Hasslefree. I have some walkers about that short. I should show them to you guys as I modded them from Warzone, sigh, such high hopes, and then they made mistakes that lost them so much! So hard to get the troops nowadays from the factions.

Cheers Vik! The lasgun looks good with that mini! Love the booney hat! Kind of looks like a Vietnam era US Army grunt!
I have a female sniper in the works using a female armature from hasslefree, and my steampunk sniper rifle and one of the skull sniper heads. I'll get some pics of that on my thread tomorrow.
I'm hoping to have the steampunk weapons ready for sale sometime soon.
I agree with Dave. A final light highlight on those arbites will help to brighten them up.
well you aint seen nuthin yet... new update strting...NOW!
so gents... here it comes... the before shown pics of that steampunk soldier were only rather rough WIPs...
groupshot of things in the works...:
and then the new really up and coming steampunk soldier... note the boiler on his backpack... and the conection with a cable to the steampunk lasgun...the "magazin" i used as a inbetween storage point so to say... i fugured a direct connection would be not my style...and the magazin as such would be too tiny for my stlye too... so a combo would be better...
see for yourself:
also... i just had to give the standard lasgun a bayonet...it is from the DA kit... and also the base is not done yet and probably a bit of resculpting of the body will happen with GS soon...
as for the other fellas... i am currently still figuring out if i clipp off the pistol grip of the sniper rifle... i think it looks fishy atm for what i am going for... and the laspistol will also get a pwercable to a steampowerpack soon... same goes to the sniper rifle...
Yeah, the pistol grip on the sniper rifle maybe needs some re-thinking. I had to cut it off for my sniper too....not sure how I'm going to sculpt the hand though, with pistol-grip or without. Eiter way, I had to cut the existing grip off.
and also it has way more personality... i still recal that fight in saving private james ryan... where that german kills slowly the one GI... that is so nasty... come to that i also recall such a knife fight in All Quiet on the Western Front... nearly the same situaton...
They look great, Vik! The little changes are fantastic - the bayonet fits so well on the guy with the pot helmet, they could have been designed to go together!
The pistolier is really characterful too - where's that head from?
oh... the head is definatly too from a fantasy GW kit... but as i got them from a bitz site i can only say that it is from the standard emperial kits...not really sure which one...
and the pitol wielding chap need some changes to really be done... i have to look at it for longer it seems... there is still lacking that certain something with it for me^^
and well what can i say... the empire stuff certaily feels as if someone has designed it to work splendidly for conversion work... have you noticed that the range of hand on these is remarkably more diversified thab the 40k range?...
actually those i have in abundace too...and i don´t really like them...
i know i promised to get you those pics earlier... but the last copupla days have been quite lively, so hobby time i only did the modeling... but tomorrow i take those pics and then we talk

that sounds interesting... will take those pics later on... was on a big voyage to get some tax documents and stuff sorted out at the offices for soon to get into work properly... now having a bit of a postponed breakfast/lunch and then it will happen^^...
bitz boxes are always like easter and christmas together^^
I have learned that Vik has mastered of making do with what he has to make awesome-ness. The man even takes a box from cereal and makes it into a tank!
yup... definatlly no look of constipation on my mug
also...update time...had still much fun with jakes guns and did my conversion work on these...
i am now thinking about attaching some kind of smokestacks to those backpacks...too much? or in dire need? your thoughts?
pics:
i think i will aply a generous amount of LGS to these powercables as i think they need to be thicker...and maybe look like those old cables you got in the early thirties... you know, those textile ones? like:
i bet LGS could simulate some kind of texture there...
also i need to figure out how to sculpt something as a better fitting hat for the sniper...that bowlhelmet looks dumb in my view... any ideas for that?
I don't think the cables need to be thicker, but they should definately hang a bit looser, more naturally. Do you have any guitar string? Or even some coated wire, perhaps from an old cat5 network cable or such?
i had my doubts about the stacks too... if not someone has some good reasons why they should be there i will leave them out...
as for the cables... well i second your need to that these should hang more loose.... but i couldn´t get that done... i tried even to loose the PC rod a bit up by aplying glue to soften the rod more but to no avail...
and guitar wire... i heard that it is pretty sturdy and hard to bend... i tried floral wire too but that didn´t really work out that well too... i was rather glad that the rod did the work i assigend it to do so to say...
cable ...hmmm... those network cables... do i need to cut a bit of that up to get at the sigle cables inside?
i think i will aply a generous amount of LGS to these powercables as i think they need to be thicker...
also i need to figure out how to sculpt something as a better fitting hat for the sniper...that bowlhelmet looks dumb in my view... any ideas for that?
Great proof of concepts here, Vik! Jake's steampunk firearms are sure becoming world travellers!
For the powercables, before you spend all that time bulking them up, I'd think about a change of medium. The styrene rod works okay, but looks stiff because a) it is stiff and b) it doesn't bend well. You might need to join the ranks of the guitar string users.
I don't think the skull cap is so bad myself. Just come up with a funny backstory as to why he's so attached to it.
no...pc rod would have to be heated up with a hair-dryer to work right, and then probably won't look right..
Oh yeah...cut the ends off the network cable, strip the outer coating and you'll see 8 coated twisted pair wires in there! a lifetime supply probably No need to strip the coating off the smalelr wires, it's plastic, so it takes paint well
You'll only need your fingers and maybe some pliers to sculpt them into the perfect hang, If you drill and super-glue it won't break off like PC would if dropped or knocked off the table.
Why not just use actual string? I'm sure you could find some thread that would be small enough, and you should be able to stiffen it with glue if you really want it to look cabled- it'll even have the texture naturally.
get the cheapest, most generic you can find! - Get a set of acoustic six-string (not electric- you'll never be able to bend them) and a set of bass strings if they are cheap enough
at dave... last line... yup i see your point... and the last wre i wouldn´t de-coat... of course^^
and thanks bubble^^
hey anvil... long time no see^^
actually i too have thought about that... i think i will do a test for this one with some mini and a GW lasgun... cut to size of course...soak the sting in pva and i should be set...

Viktor von Domm wrote:i think i will tomorrow look into a music shop and see if they have guitar strings... which thickness and string should i get?
I had to physically get out my guitar to answer this question. I hope you appreciate it...
I would suggest either an A or D string. They are both still wound strings, and are small enough to flow nicely I think. "A" ~ .5mm dia, "D" ~ .8mm dia. Keep in mind that I measured with a tape measure. Not the most accurate method in the world for measuring things >1mm
See how your Plastic rod curves smoothly and naturally out of the backpack, but then kinks..yeah, he means "flow" as in the natural hang, the lye, or sag I think.
Viktor von Domm wrote:
lol.... thanks rawson... i really apreciate that! A or D... now i have a number so to say^^...
No sweat
Viktor von Domm wrote:and with nicley flow you mean they would bend easier? or how should i understand that term?
I was just thinking of the problem you're trying to solve: the "flowing" curvature of your power cables. They will certainly bend at angles if you're not careful, but they should be able to do what you want them to...
at dave... that sadly was due to me having to use tweezers due to the fact that i used superglue... i am not on good temrs to this actually... so the sheer force i used made those odd angles... that is rather a drag...and yes i was originally aiming for the flow look rather...
at rawson... well i have to see how the guitar strings will work for me...
that for definite... also as these are more fantasy looking model i need to figure out as to how to frilly up those stacks then... bare tubes wouldn´t look good i expect...
What about parts from a pen or something? Just cut them to size and little notches into it to get the crowned fancy look.
Edit: Could even drawn inspiration from some of the packs some of the Warmachine characters have. Seeing as the vast majority have steam powered armour.
Steampunk wise Warmachine is really brialliant. they even have a giant robot that could be used as a steampunk style warhound give me a sec and i will find a pic
Automatically Appended Next Post: it's only $135 us dollars
Khador seems to be the most steam punk out of the lot though. even going as far as bolting soldiers into armour that has just as much chance to kill them as the enemy due to the heat of the internal boiler alone.
I think the backpack looks fine as it is. You have already conveyed the steampunk look. Advise I have shared and have taken from other peoiple- less is sometimes more. The gun and the hat and the other bitz pull it off. I am not sure that having a backpack that looks like it weighs 150 kilos (and produces heat upwards of 100°C) would benefit the miniature overall.
Right!- Infantry need to be as lightweight and mobile as possible IMHO.
We are comparing apples to oranges here...all those Warmachine minis have a smokestack to power their POWER ARMOR, which means it is powered and therefore needs a portable power source.
LOL... fatty... yup... i had to watch the game... my wife wanted me to^^... so i was like... i do have to keep my eyes open... for me despite the results in goals it was pretty boring game... both teams seemed to be plying too much on the safe side and more like technical than emotional players... i don´t like that!
seems now your team might be in for a bit of trouble...is it still possible to get further for them? i know one game is still to play...
well skalk... you certainly have a point here... hmm... well i did attach a pipe to each backpack now... but that could be undone quite easy...
and dave... yup... i totally see your point... and in fact these are just counts as lasguns wielding steampunk looking cadian stand ins...so the stacks are not needed really... and if the look doesn´t really fit i think i will get rid of them...
but for the time being here is the current look... i did what dave had suggested...cut up a network cable and got one line of cable from that set... easy to get... now in abundance in stock and easy to work with... and dead cheap... what´s not to be liked about that^^ thanks dave for that hint!!!
so...here are the three warriors of steam again...
if the stacks should stay i will be doing a bit of GS work on them... get the base done better and the crown thingy also...
Rumor is that Vik invented the practice of putting rivets on rivets. The minor task of putting rivets on a smokestack should be no problem for him at all.
And Vik, if you are telling me I need rivets on the itty bitty pwer magazines for the laser rifles, you can figure out the smokestack ones!
Do you have Instant Mold? If not, you need it. You can press mold tiny rivets from something else, or use the tip of a toothpick, and then use the pressmold to make the tiny rivets out of GS.
well today i nearly finsihed my sons frst squad... pics will follow in the morning (CET) to get some nice daylight pics... and yes... i think the steamsoldiers look with the current smokestack still not right... the lenght will corrected...and i have way too long worked for the hobby without seriously riveting something...that needs to be changed... oh yeah...
also i traded today some of my stuff with shaso...soon my AT 43 colossus walkers will be going to shaso... he promised me some tank bitz in return and then i will create a nice tank for my son... with rivets galore^^
by the way...shaso...the stuff is now truly on it´s way to you!!!
also on a side note... me and the family will be off for a week starting this weekend on saturday... till next friday... so you have to cpe without me... yeah i know...hard times ahead ...but you have to grow up on your own too...
so i will now leave you with an extra dose of ^^´s ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Vik i wanna invite you and the rest of the league to a contest i am holding. its a convert and paint challenge with some funky rules. if you guy's are interested i can translate the rules into English.

we will go to a lil farm in a region called "harz" there will be horses and a cool dog... the kids and we were aready there twice and they just love iot... big place with lots of woods and even a lil river to play thousand of games... just the type of place for kids that age to have a good time...
anyone have any cool ideas what we could take with us to support just those little experimenting minds of our kids in such a surrounding? we will take with us some tools and stuff... maybe we will cobble together a small hut... the kids atm are very into making their own huts/ caves and such things... we will also take with us a small windshiled tent...you know those things you probably use at the beach... a bit of string, nails, knifes and what not...
enjoy the time with the family vik, since tomorrow is my last day of school for now and the next two weeks will be tight on time, i will have at least 10 less pages a day to read
