Well, I don't know what kinds of things your kids like Vik, but if you like fresh meat, I would suggest learing to snare rabbits. There are lots of great tuts on the web, and you don't need many supplies. I plan on trying this next time we go camping.
But if you are not into that sort of thing, you could try to catch a small animal live, in a box, and the kids can examine it.
other than that, you talked about taking tools, and maybe you could build a fort for them to play in.
well the hunting sounds good...tho i stop at the actual killing bit... i bet my wife and the kids would cry then...well for that matter even me...if it wasn´t so darn easy and tasty to get meat in the supermarket i probably would be a vegitarian already... i think i could never hunt an animal...but i really like eating meat...
but the hunting and then examining is a good idea... we even have a spyglass/cage thingy... we will take that with us...
and the fort idea... maybe it will be just something resembling a but i bet the kids will love this!^^
corss your fingers for good steady weather!!!
oh and we will definatly take with us the kids skaters...^^
well... i still remember my granddad... he was at his shed in the garden and used slingshot out of a turn of mischief... and killed totally unexpected a small hazelmouse... the man was all tears... and mind you he survived the big war... and probably has seen much worse than a clean kill of a mouse... i bet i would be devasted by that too... but you have to take into account that in german you are usually not allaowed to carry any guns... so hunting is not a big sport here... so no hunting tradition could develope here... so unlike to the states...
but i do enjoy my meat! today i ate
dunno what it might be called in english... we call it "grillfackel" it is pork... twisted on a skewer... it was delicious... the last honor i had to pay to the late piggy^^
and i wouldn´t have any doubts or hesitations to kill a man... if he would be attacking my family or me... he would be toast almost instantly... asking questions later... shooting first
thanks... and you bet that this was tasty... only my little one is a meat apreciater in the family...when he gets older i sure have to keep my exe on the meat...
and well... you egt to read my musings at least tomorrow^^
by the way...shaso...the stuff is now truly on it´s way to you!!!
No worries, and the bitz will be in a returning box for you. Enjoy that trip to Harz. I wonder if the food is still served in heaped portions for the money?
lol...max... what is roadkill stew? sounds a bit messy^^ but well there are some dishes that taste delicious and it isn´t really needed to know what it contains...
like commander vimes of the discworld novels used to say...: if you know the half of the contens of a dish it is safe to eat the other half too
and boys...and gorls ... you all tear me to pieces... i really don´t know what to do first hobbywise... seeing the recent aircrafts around... all that cool looking terrain...tanks and mini painting... argh...
i fall down again and started a sideproject... as my son will hopefully around christmas will be able to read a bit i think it is safe to dream about play with him a nice game of munda soon... so i need a table... and as i like my ideas to be quite non simple i am dreaming now of a modular table... some kind of sewer or dungeon look... made up from tiles... that can b aranged any old how... i will show you later on my early start in this endeavor... also the finished felix freedom fighters first squad and what else i am willing to share with you... take it as a for- now- farewell- party gift of mine ^^
As long as they aren't on your birthday, while you're sick but not sick enough to get a note that would allow you to take it on another day without penalty.
Hey Vik , enjoy your farm break.. the only thing we take on such hols are cards.. just in case it rains .. sounds like the forest will provide everything you need for fun..
first... many thanks for the nice wishes... neil, i have to check if we already have packed up some cards... good idea!
well then... good luck till the end shrike...
and well mates...
i did promise as a sort of fare well present you a new project... when i started this my son had a very happy glow in his eyes...!
so i today saw that my son was leafing through a comic book... and i have every confidence that learning to read will be with him rather quick... so as a form of encouraging him even firther than is own intrinsic motivation i began to build a game set for us to later play with...
the starter set will be looking like this... a kind of sewer and dungeon mix... modular tiles with walls... a bit like a self made space hulk board...
the plan/sketches
each tileunit is 7cm to 7cm the squares are in corner sections and longer double sections and finally single sections...
i used balsa wood plates that i cut into size and forms acordingly... this project really went from start to a recocnizable first form in a blurr... that never happened before... i am very high on motivation atm for this...
atfer i finished with the first lot of the needed tiles (note that the whole thing is endlessly expandable with lots of more options to the shaping of the tiles...heck even my son came up with the idea for bridges already!!!^^)
the whole set looks like this:
takes up around atm 50cm to 50 cm...
also note the felix freedom fighters "declared" finished first squad...
the leader of the pack and some other chums of his lot...
and then i started to work on some pink insulation foam to get the walls done... worked on two single tiles wallsections... one pure wall and one doorway...some small steps will help the models then to get through soon...
so what do you think...? i hope i can get my teeth into that project after our trip for good... i want to get it finished before i start working...
actually carving bricks is as close as you can ever get to riveting without so much as ...wait for it...rivet anything^^
i used a pencil and an old carpet knife and also for means of keeping the bricks in a steady size some isesticks i collect... there exactly 0.5 cm thick and together with a thicker version that is 1cm thick i did these... once you start the times flies literally by...but i felt quite proud of myself... and the best part for this was... when i was in full swing of brick carving... my sond felix came to my side and sad... cool... they would look brilliant done in red and brownish tones... he really is such a cool son!!!!!! i must be doing something right^^
and dave... thank you very much ... i really apreciate that! the commander of the pack was kinda troublesome... i bet he is still not finished but i had to quit the work on these... tho i really like asurmen blue... that is a truly awsome wash...!!!
er... i think v.o.i.d. minis... but i am not sure anymore... got at least another squad of those still in a box... waiting to get their lick of paint... thanks RW...
and now i wish you all a nice week...stay sober ^^

Same here. In fact, here's a pic of the last time I did that:
Disclaimer- I only did this after the wife went to sleep. Or was watching TV. Or went to the lobby. Or took a shower. Or didn't directly tell me to stop doing it.
Well, I know my wife would kill me if I'd take some hobby stuff (sculpting or painting) with me on holidays...well actually she'd file divorce first and then kill me BUT on holidays you have to keep your eyes open and look around - there is SO much inspiring stuff in "real live (TM)" Usually my head is spilling with new ideas after a holiday.
Cheers
Klaus
if im bringing modeling stuff with me on vacation, then i think i need a better vacation! although i agree with klaus, in the fact that i would bring the camera and take pics of "inspiration"
wow... the post finally was quick with that one shaso... i never knew!!! no luck so far on my doorstep...but i keep waiting....
as for the hobby stuff... well i am most eager to start again... with a bit of luck i get some time tomorrow...
i thought about taking some minis and paints with me on vacation ...but i thought better... as klaus said... my wife wouldn´t have liked that too^^ and yes... i took the odd pic for my own hobby needs... there is plenty outside that can spark some inspiration for your projects... i have yet to DL my sd card so to sieve through my pics i took...
also...we went shopping... the kids asked for some lightsabers... and they got them... curtesy of their mum... noisy lil gimmicks that they are... but in that same toyshop i found some half priced citadel paints... so i got me seven pots for my own collection^^ you gotta have something hobbyrelated when possible...
well we had a good time tho the weather played a bit foul games with us... lots of rain recently in europe...well at least in our part :( but we did our best to cope with it and had fun nevertheless^^
and yeppers...i am tring atm to crawl through my backlog^^ boy is it long in parts^^
Sometimes it's not just the going away that inhibits the hobbying: with the new little one here, we've had six out of the last eight weeks with relatives visiting. Kinda makes you feel like a jerk if family comes to visit from half way around the world and you go down into the hobby hole...
uuuuuhhh i bet that having relatives at home is a definite drag on the hobby time....hpe the young one grows fast so that it isn´t for this issue an ongoing threat to the hobby^^
and thanks mates! i really love how i have been missed
lol... i am about to update later today... have to take pics and such things... the first wall section is about to get done... boy...did someone warn me to ruin my nerves and eyesight by doing muuuuiiiiilllllions of bricks??? no...well shame on you...cause you should have... and i am not even alf through... urg....
I will have the bitz assembled and mailed out this week as the postal offices are monday to friday around here, and the roommie has to have a day off to do it all in.
I know there will be some good pics from Vik when he gets a chance to post them.
General postal or all postal? I think it's only Monday through to Friday here, probably some companies for the weekends as well for priority things; but it's been that way as long as I've been alive at least.
Some of the outsourced post offices still have saturday hours, and they still deliver on saturday, but no major pick ups are done, everything piles up until monday.
Viktor von Domm wrote:lol... i am about to update later today...
I see no pictures, master Vik! Honestly, you need to learn to update more often
those bricks do sound somewhat tiresome to do repeatedly, though. I'd imagine regular breaks to help brick it up a bit.......
I'm soooo with Shrike!
There I am, ready to use a whole bunch of exclamation marks I found in my blog, but I can't get rid of them 'cause you'rte lacking the updates...
May as well head over to RSJake and see if I can spend some of those pesky "!" over there
Rawson wrote:Kinda makes you feel like a jerk if family comes to visit from half way around the world and you go down into the hobby hole...
Did you invite them to come, or did they invite themselves? I have no qualms about continuing on w/ my life as planned when someone else makes assumptions regarding my time, interest, and availability. It's an incredibly effective tactic for creating more personal time for myself as well. It's a contributing factor why I have so few genuine friends and almost no contact w/ my extended family.
*rubs hands together and laughs manically* My evil plan is working.
I get around questions about my laughing by just saying "stuff" or "just this" and then immediately tabbing off the page
Am I the only one, or when someone's looking over your shoulder on the computer, no matter how innocent whatever you were going to do was, you still open up a new tab and generally waste time opening and closing random stuff until they go away? Because I do that all the time
I normally open up google, hesitate deliberately, close it, open up my documents, load up one, tab out, maybe close a window I already have open via task manager, and if they're not gone by then, I turn around and go "yes?"
well it seems you all look way too often and naughty stuff to be so good at hiding your amusments^^
well i know i promised but didn´t deliver... in a means of self defense... my son oskar had his fourth birthday.... and we went to legoland... that took up some time and energy... man that place is packed with delicious stuff... and it is soooo loaded on LSD... really all kids there behave like they are on drugs... well i was totally wasted afterwards and only watched tv...instead of joining you all on dakka...
but inbetween all those festivities...i could still include the odd lick of paint and quite a few craved bricks...lots of bricks... only followed by ...bricks....
really brick- zen is something that still hasen´t happened... rivetzen is really something that is making me feel good... but i will be so happy when i finished that job... i atm hate sincerely making bricks^^
but... here are some pics for the lot of you...
base colors front and back
for scale:
finished first one...
and production line...
by the way... bubble you are still shown as german... still residing in berlin?
and skalk that is a good move... i went beyond and now the bagage wont even call us via the phone... well sometimes that has its benefits... but i guess my wife feels differently about that...
nice bricks vik, sounds like you had fun at legoland! and im glad your son was born in july its the month where gods are born... *cough cough* and what a coincidence, my update had bricks in it too
lol... well shaso... you have to imagine two of these walls facing each other to create a tunnel of sorts... and this will be then the modular gaming table... will do some explaining pics tomorrow...
lol...month of gods...and i loved your update RW... probably the most creative work of yours if i am allowed to say!!!
um.. i just realised its june not july.... oh well glad no one called me an idiot (probibly since chidle didnt see it ) and thanks for the good words vik!
Been ill and cleaning house, scanned threads quickly but could not be assed to leave any comments
But thought you were due a reply, plus I have done a little modelling amazing I know, but started decorating plus I am moving man cave to second large room
Glad you have had a good break and lego land must goto the one over here one day

Ok the wheres shrike face made me laugh! hahaha and yes, a human sacrifice would be nice, but a pegasus sacrifce would be best, so hop to it, and my house of worship is (secretly) located under all the toliets, so becarefull I have undead pet guardeans as well as crocidile (or alligator) leaders under there too
LDD...well i hope you are now healthy again... have you updated already? my backlog left my subscription list a bit hazy...
and well god ... i think god needs prayers not dead biomass to feast upon... what does not need prayers is not what is fit to be named a god! period... beside... i don´t need any
and...
dave... muilllions... at the very least... well i need to make corner sections ...four inner ones...four outer facing walls...and then two window sections...and then two doble walls and then i am done...for now... then i have a full square worth of walled tiles to play with... that is the plan...for now...later on many more can follow...with other special terrain sections i think...heck maybe i make myself some sewer sections and such like...

that did make me laugh... though I was actually lying in bed, boiling hot, trying to sleep.
I got to sleep sometime after 4:00am.
My 2-hour exam starts at 8:30am.
It's going to be a long exam.
the exam should be fun! i enjoy taking (most) exams, because i consider myslef smart, and when i get done 1-1:30 hours before everyone else, i feel like i did a good job Oh man i am not doing well with sleep recently, one night when i had to get up at 9 to get ready for the GW, (last saturday) I went to bed around 1am, correction I layed in my bed with my eyes closed an lights out at 1am and now im not exaguration or any of that crap, when i fell asleep at 7ish it was the longest night i've had in a long time
Rogue Wolves wrote:the exam should be fun! i enjoy taking (most) exams, because i consider myslef smart, and when i get done 1-1:30 hours before everyone else, i feel like i did a good job Oh man i am not doing well with sleep recently, one night when i had to get up at 9 to get ready for the GW, (last saturday) I went to bed around 1am, correction I layed in my bed with my eyes closed an lights out at 1am and now im not exaguration or any of that crap, when i fell asleep at 7ish it was the longest night i've had in a long time
aye, I got into bed around 12:00, and just couldn't sleep because of the heat- I tried the fan, which was too loud, I tried opening the window, which released the noise of what seemed like hundreds of frogs outside, and without the duvet, which wasn't comfy enough. Eventually I lay there in darkness for the best part of an hour before I fell asleep (last I looked at the clock it was 4:10 or so).
I tend to do relatively well in subjects I'm not good at with my skill of bluffing my way through questions I don't know, using common sense/general knowledge, or by generalising/bending the subject of the question to fit what I know about it
Most tests I do, I make sure I answer all the questions and go over them, so I normally finish with about 10 minutes to go, though it depends on the subject. Sometimes I've been rushing to finish the last question (english literature), and sometimes I've had half an hour left (graphics, maths)
oh btw i was joking when i said it would be fun, just trying to encourage you is all, and honestly i've gotten good at guessing (not sure how its possible but i did) because i used to use my german 2 class as nap time, and guess my way with words, the bad thing about that class is that the 2 smartest kids would answer before any of us could, so she just asumed we where learning
Rogue Wolves wrote:the bad thing about that class is that the 2 smartest kids would answer before any of us could, so she just asumed we where learning
That's what happens to me in maths- there were at least 5 of us who had no idea what was going on 90% of the time and the teacher never noticed.
In biology/chemistry, the teacher lets the class get away with way too much, so everyone talks all the time and rarely get the lesson done. I picked up a book the day before the exam, and knew nothing on it. I came out with C's and D's for each here's hoping this year's results will be similar Similar thing with R.E, I didn't even know what the test was on until that day, and think I got around a C in that hopefully.
after i failed math and science last year for ditching both, i had to pay attention more.. although i dont do most of my homework i get high test scores so it keeps me with a's and b's and a few c's for good measure
Test actually went okay, and I'd like to support Not_U's "lazy student" method by saying I'm getting high B's in physics and english and at least C's in just about everything else without studying at all
shrike wrote:Test actually went okay, and I'd like to support Not_U's "lazy student" method by saying I'm getting high B's in physics and english and at least C's in just about everything else without studying at all
Those walls are awesome Vik! Question about the scale though, they seem a bit large in the pics (like cinder blocks instead of bricks). Is it a "photo" thing or are they that large?
Also, have to share this- new Dakka guy, Ork player, very talented conversions with a unique (bizarre, even?) visions. Figured people would like his work and I'm always looking to help the modeling community grow closer.

lol... you lazy students... and dave... credit for you... i still have a big amount of payback to see through for my own studying... unfortunatly it served me nothing... all these wasted years... and money for naught... now my new future profession all makes this totally wasted time and effort... well you live you learn...hopefully...
by the way... the bricks skalk... they are a size of 1cm to 0.5 cm i deemed them in scale (well for a given value of in sclae mind you ) maybe they should have been smaller even but i couldn´t really bear with even more of these... and remember there will be lots of them even more... only today i told my wife... i could have gone the easy road with a more spacehulk look... just metal clad walls all over... add the odd cable and rivet and i would have been set... nooooo... i had to go all bricks... yeah... silly me^^
and well yesterday i promised some shots how these should be aranged and how i think the gaming table should look like...
so feast your eyes on these:
i think shortly i should do some sewer canal additions... any ideas as to how i should tackle this are most welcome...after all this show is been followeed by a bunch of very talented terrain makers already...looking at you dave and skalk...
well all the bricks you can see... on those walls...only at the underside anre none... are carved... first a pattern done with knife... then indented with pencil to have grooves... i don´t even want to know how many i already did...and how more i have to do...argh...^^
and childe... hmmm posters... victorian posters...hmmm... indeed... i have to take a look ...*shuffels to google...*

Easy enough to make dude, I could always make some especially for you the size of my banners (the small ones, which are 200x120) and fill them with Victoriana/Imperial references
Those posters are ace, but my advice is avoid anything that says Victorian or Steampunk in it, as in both those settings they arent words which are used, they are hindsight words
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also Vik, If your going to age those walls I advise using weathering powders mixed in white spirit/turps and flicked at them with a toothbrush head, making the mixtures in different concentrations and layering them up. that way when the white spirit/turps evaporates it leaves the powder looking like real dirt... although if you've made those walls from polystyrene, you may want to seal it first with a matt spray varnish, otherwise the spirits may "eat" at them lols... and I'd hate to see your work destroyed because of me lols
well for now i will keep the walls as is... and waethering powders are currently not in my possessions... i will add some pipes and such things tho... soonish on the following wallsections tho... these here are finished... and yes childe... the words should be avoided... but the steampunk bible i think is more a tribute of sort^^
very nice attention to detail! If I were you I'd have been reduced to painting the walls with my own blood in an attempt to do some work and still kill myself through boredom
I'm not sure about the colour in the first two pictures... is it just lighting? it seems a tad pink... in any case, the colour on the third, fourth and sixth pictures is bang on ^^
the first one is indeed due to flash... it is "just" mecharite red... pure and simple... i am toatlly attached to that color...yeah it is killed by GW... but i still have it and can get it via channels for now^^...
and yep... i think it is a feat quite heroic to do all those bricks^^
and since these are the first batch... argh^^
and childe...
these are all tiles i have atm cut up... now walls are needed... the ones you see above are done... the corner sections are all in need of doing (red and blue on the sketched plan) and then some more longer sections and some window sections too...
and well this might be due to your water shaso? know mine is in two different shades too... one is pure... and one i diluted but if i layer it it is still getting me the original results... but only one coat is looking then fishy...
Viktor von Domm wrote:i am toatlly attached to that color...yeah it is killed by GW...
Aye, I loved bronzed flesh (taken out some time ago) and, of course, devlan mud. Awesomesauce, in its purest form. I lament it's passing.
The five colours I mostly rely on nowadays are chaos black and boltgun metal (obviously), skull white, scab red (a close match to mechrite red) and catachan green.
anyone got any ideas why GW discontinued devlan mud? Every painter I know used it, seems a bit odd to cut it's production...
Bronzed flesh was because it was an exact 1:1 mix of dwarf and elf flesh, so people just bought two and mixed them when needed- is this a similar situation?
I vow to get to the bottom of why GW brought down such an epic paint in its prime...

Nice walls like the fact you have used hight as well really feeling this project and with a little side line of mine at the moment would work together, might have to come to Germany to have a game
I think the poster idea will add another look to the walls, weird I was doing the same thing the other day looking for posters in this style, got some the same
Maybe a manhole cover here and there would look good
I'm sort of dreading it myself as I'm running real low on badab black, purple and sepia. I use them so much. Sort of curious though to see how the Daemonettes would go with the new purple as I heard these new washes are supposed to be a touch thinner.

and LDD..yeah i would love to game with so many of my chums here...well one of these days... distance can´t be the last repartee for ever...
manholes of course... got at least some of zinges stuff still for that... and maybe i´ll attempt a scratchbuilt one soon...
the hight was for me a very important thing indeed...thanks for you noticing this... i have seen the hirst arts stuff... and they always lack the hight to truly feel inside a tunnel or terrain bit... i wanted to have the minis stand inside at least a wall that is worth of thinking it would support a ceiling... some of the stuff out there looks so low you just could imagine the minis hop over them walls...
Automatically Appended Next Post: oh cross post there krimson... home schoolar boy then?
Yes, the hight works great, gives a real sense of depth to the scenery and the feel of old victorian streets.
Man hole covers are easy to build, have you got a compass cutter take some textured PC cut out a circle from it, then cut out a larger circle than that one in plain PC.
Stick them together then add some rivets, cut out a small section in the street section ( ground template ) take a small strip of plastic strip add it to the hole around the inside edge of the hole (gives it the raised section)
Then stick the circle sections inside of the hole hey presto, if that all makes sense
Because I have yet to try them out and that's all I've been hearing about them. It's good to hear that that's just the over exaggerated hype it seems to be then. You know how the sky always falls when something like this happens...
LDD...yup...understood quite well... now i have to get me some textured styrene... and i do have compass cutter and even more heavy duty pouncing stuff for making discs...i will soon give that a try...
If anything...the foundation (or base paints) are even better now. All of the old foundation paints were very very flat, the new base colors just rock da house!
I think gaslights shouldn't be too hard. A simple cilinder, some plasticard or cardboard for the housing, a pole... I'll fiddle a bit and see what i can come up with. If i can build one from scratch... i'm sure you can too...
It shouldn't be too hard to scratch Vik..look up pics (like you are already) Then break it down into basic shapes, then figure out how to easily mass-produce those shapes with materials you have - We are here to help you if you get stuck on some part of it, or need ideas or suggestions.
The GW lamps are cool, but are a bit over-embellished IMHO.
Totally plus I want t o build some myself, kill 2 birds with one stone so to speak.
I wish I could remember where I saw the tutorial know, from what I can remember it was a case of separate glazed sections (clear plastic) in triangle shapes.
Then thin plasticard strips to join them together and PC to create the top metal section, that was the basics to it if that helps any.

I will look tomorrow and let you know if it is them
^^THAT^^ Is a smart man right there! -You can learn a LOT from reading what those crazy old railroad modelers do!
-Some of those old-timers are like One-Man Hobby A-Teams!
well...that would be a four sided version... with that i think one could come up rather "easily"... tho it would freak me out to work with clear plastic... never did that and my painting is currently too blotchy to do it right^^...
the top could be really easy comperativly speaking as it is mostly just layer after layer...the post would also quite challenging tho if i could find a piece of wood with already the fitting texture this could help...hmmmm
If you want to buy them rather than make them (shhh don't tell Dave ) I know an ebayer that sells them rather cheap, only snag is he is China so there is a wait
naw... i have thought about that too but i would rather feel better if i am able to do it on my own... tho i think bought ones would probably look better^^...
hmmm.... i think i will try some versions of everything and see what works the best... maybe even without clear sheats and just leave a gap...wouldn´t be sturdy at all but easier i think...
Here's a thought. Make a basic mold, and use clear resin to fill it. Shouldn't be too difficult to make a box-shaped mold that's smaller on the bottom, just press something of the right size and shape into some play-dough or whatever, and pour in either PVA glue or clear resin. Solid piece, you can suspend a 'flame' inside with a little dye (or even use an LED), then just put the 'fins' on via paint or plasticard.
hey lads and ladies... i was not feeling up to banter yesterday... but i was busy with crating gaslights...
and who said the paint it on version? well i came up with that one myself... so come and join me and follow this quick build...
i kinda felt a bit like dave with this one^^:
1. decided to do a four sided gaslight... created the corpus from a 1cm to 1cm square and then made it more conical...
2. added a top...
3.inserted a square tube as a lamp- post..
4. added U-shaped rods for details on each side of the lamp post...
5. added upper rim...
6. sandwich top cone and bottom foot...
overlapping stuff gets corrected once it is cured...
7. scale comparrision with one of my own^^
8.added half round rods as a glashausing for the lantern...
then my wife and me decided that this built is not what i wanted...
because the lamp post is too thick...also way too short... and the overall look is due to the half round housing of the lantern not really in line to the more angular overall look of the thing...
well it was worth a try....
that was yesterdays work...
this....
this is todays work:
after i had a visit at my not too local plastic dealer... (massive, at least for me suply drop of styrene sheat and other goodies...35 €s all in all... my wife awas keeping rather quiet at the sum,...) i wnt to town on a new build...
basically the same design with some better results if i say so myself...
and the scale comparrision...
i am feeling rather smug at myself for getting this done... tho my wife still says she doesnt like the height of that thing...
Second the first design was a bit small and a bit art nouveau rather than Victorian looking, but I still kind of liked it for that reason, so you could use it for scenery in something else.
Thirdly The last one looks bang on, it fits the period well and the detail is great now stick some paint on it
Although I do agree with your wife it could do with a little more hight, mind you she must be sick of getting the short end all the time LOL

It's unanimous! The second one is muc more awesome than the first I see what you mean when you said you feel a bit like Dave, though Though for 35 euros you could have just bought some regular GW ones from eBay, but that wouldn't have been as fun or impressive
My only comment would be that I like the size of the lamp on the first prototype better. The second one seems overly large, IMHO.
Again, excellent work, mate! Fits the theme perfectly!
thanks shrike... but you know with kids these days
and LDD... yup... i think the first design will get a bit tweaked with and then i can be used too... maybe i convert it to a hanging lamp from one of these brickwalls...and thanks for the second design... it has greatly done well due to the first one... prototypes are meant to be the to get other stuff built on these...
and short end... better not mnake assumptions from your own living^^... my wife is quite satisfied^^
the heat shaso... ans my kids are currently playing havok too... bust be one of these rather diffcult stage of growing up... the are atm quite rebbelious...
oh and for your information... paintuing is planned for tomorrow! for definite! after that i can start the massproduction...
Automatically Appended Next Post: rawson... have you talked with my wife latley? her thoughst exactly... the lantern was too tall for her taste too!...i will be thinking of changing that maybe... can´t promise that tho^^... well the third one will be the altered version then^^
some minor tweaks i have also planned for future lamps too...
and i actually diod look for GW lamps... but i couldn´t find one... for that matter i think i never even saw one at all^^

I actually like the height of the post. It's the actual dimentions of the lamp part itself that I think are oversized. The first one was a bit smaller and I thought it fit better...
Viktor von Domm wrote:and i actually diod look for GW lamps... but i couldn´t find one... for that matter i think i never even saw one at all^^
These ones... I'm not sure what the things are in the upper right corner, but these are the two lamps that I was thinking of.
at rawson... i am with you... i am at the loss for words here the right names for the parts... the upper lantern body...the light producing bitty... that is too big... that was what my wife said too... and after your opinion and hers i gotta agree... and it will get changed in a later version...
and while the GW stuff is probably grim and dark... see all those skulls for direct clues ... i don´t feel ever using these on my table... regardless of their price and the size of my wallet... IF my wallet had been big enough and filled enough then i´d rather got me some 0 scale train stuff ...after all they do cater for specialists interests too

Okay, I'm glad we're on the same page now!

Fair enough. While we're on the topic of "the light producing bitty", were you thinking grimdark or steampunk? Wait....Is that a stupid question?
Those are both awesome builds Vik! I love how you put all those detail layers on both lamps, it really gives it a great look! I especially like the little arms on the second one, I can imagine banners hung from them or ivy and other vines crawling up them, contrasting nicel with the cast-iron black color!
those are some pretty awesome street lights there vik. i was wondering are you going to add any rules like if they get shot out (the lamps) darkness falls within 5 inches or something like that. that is what i was thinking if these are for munda
Viktor von Domm wrote:well actually it is a stupid question^^
steampunk it is^^ and failing this then at least victorian^^
Haha!
dsteingass wrote:I especially like the little arms on the second one, I can imagine banners hung from them or ivy and other vines crawling up them, contrasting nicel with the cast-iron black color!
The second lamp is awesome and is already screaming steampunk gaslamp. From the build (which is superbly clean and crisp) you can do easy molding and casting - so fit's the bill.
BUT (yeah, you knew this was comin' right?),
I know you can do better When I saw your initial post on the lamp, I was thinking for myself how would I do it, but due to lack of time, I didn't really think it through.
However, coming back to the original idea of casting, clear resin and the like, maybe it would be worth a different try - eventhough spending 35.-€ already, you may be at the end of your willingness to experiment further, and as said, the current light is already super, and lightyears better than the GW light, which I despise totally.
(Gee why did I even hit fast reply, this is getting long)
So, my (very complicated idea) would be to build the initial glas body, like what you've got in your 1st image, make a mold (really simple bottom-to-top pouring) and cast your glass body from clear resin.
Then take the angular sides, maybe add some more ornamental details to steampunkify it better - if not from plasticcard try some greenstuff, and make 1 mold that you can use for all 4 sides, another for your top, and voila you have a 6 piece clear body steampunk glas latern.
Way over the top, but stunning ...
let me take all this back You current light is excellent - now simply try to build an additional wall-mount for it, so you can use it in a different style for the dungeon, and you good Cheers
Klaus
Torches mounted on walls is as old of an idea as humanity, it is not limited to D&D (open your mind LDD) But I agree, a wall-mount version would be easy to do, and would definately give more variety to whatever lamp you make. Even if you can't get these cast up, it should be simple to mass produce them, given your ingenious thinking in basic shapes and layers!

Those look eminiently castable... Ill mold em and send the masters and a mold back...
well actually my friends they are a bit sans rivets... didn´t anyone notice?
but i will try a better version... and galorn... if i can make a better one, this one has some points i think are not completely defined enough for my own taste... then i will come back to your offer!
and klaus, many thanks...and i do like your idea... and i´d be the last person to not want to cast them ... something like that would even be selling i guess... but unfortunatly me as a hobbiist am totally lightyears away from ever casting stuff... tho i do find your idea with added GS frilly stuff very intriguing...hmmm... i will ponder about this some more...
and well torches... nawww... wouln´t fit the bill only for the very dark sections of london in the victorian age i guess...
felt a little low again but i have completed my first even "varnished piece" ever... and i will show you this later this day... big promise... it even quali´fies for an avatar pic change after the suited rule to self made stuff^^

Well then if you send me your "trial" attempts I could try to make molds of em to see where the problem areas are...?
here are the very first pics and please bear with me...the very first pics even of a varnished pice i deemed finished...
also this is a first time becuase with this piece i even tried myself with a bit of higlighting... yeah right... comfortzone... whazzat? ^^ and wet blending...which didn´t came out as intended but there you are^^
at galorn... i am currently working on a new lamp... which is sadly not the style i was aiming for as i got confused with diameter... but i finish it anyway... the built after that if i deem it enough^^ i will send to you, deal?^^
oh...thanks bubble... and you aint seen nothin´yet^^
now...now you see everything....at least everything my wife allows me to show ye lot
bama... meant to comment earlier on your rules idea... i like that... interactive terrain got to be the pinnacle of terrain in my book... whenever i play a game on my pc i love games that makes it possible to shoot through walls and to kill the lights and such stuff... when i finally can play on that table i be sure to include that rule...
and actually i can only chime in with you about the combination of the brickwork and the lamp... it is a very cool combination...
on other news... i am also working(atm only a cencept) of some scratchbuild guttermanholes... my wife lend me some lipped buttons of her huge collection... now i need to figure out a way how to use them...
also the terrain competition idea needs some serious thinking....*puts thinking cap on*
Great work, Vik! Especially on the things that push your abilities a bit: highlighting, even a little bit of OSL-ish blending! Excellent work overall! Whoever suggested to build the whole thing out of plasticard and then paint it must be a genius
yeah... that guy was genius all over... too bad we both still can´t recall who that was....
and many thanks rawson^^
by the way... is there a guide for dummies out there to get one noob into doiung hightights done on minis? i know they always say you have to imagine where the light might shine on but really that is way too simple a hint that the actual execution of a hightlight truly is... i bet that the highlights on that lamp actually arent that possible... but well... it was a start, right ?^^
That kicks ass Vik! Amazing work! - YOUR painting has also come a long, long way! I couldn't even imagine doing that clean of work! I know how, but my brush never does it..just scrape the edge of a loaded, pointy brush across the edge. Simple, but I can never do that. You nailed it bro! Not too much, not too little.
thanks dave... very encouraging of you for my next project ^^ there is never the possibility then to step back i hope once one has gotten further^^ *fingers crossed*
thanks shrike... as usual^^
thanks RW
at daemon...
i have thought already about adding some posters... heck for that matter today i got a buckle in my hand... a female frilly one... it was too damn big otherwise it would have been a truly nice stucco frame fro a wall... posters yeah... tho i aim for the steampunk look... so i need more vintage than grim dark stuff...
what exactly do you have in mind? i am game for almost everything
but for now i do have to part with you all... need my beautysleep... well... as i am beautiful already i hope i can do with only these few hours
here are the very first pics and please bear with me...the very first pics even of a varnished pice i deemed finished...
