Hello,

Im new to painting and I would like some advice on painting my space marines. I mentioned this in another thread titled "Dry Brushing" but wanted to post it again with a correct title.

I am using the color scheme yellow, black, white, and of course some smaller detail colors like brown, gray, red, etc. So far I havent had any luck with keeping the detail on my models as well as having a good solid yellow color. I am undercoating my models with chaos black spray (I was told that I could use yellow over black and still have it look great with keeping detail).

Any tips or tricks or suggestions to give me for painting these guys? I will post pictures when I start making progress, either that or I will try a white undercoat and lastly if that doesnt work I will switch color schemes lol.

Use foundation tausept yellow ( spelling? ) paints , 2 coats.

You have to criss cross the 2 coats so they'll be solid.
(unless you want to do a 3rd coat lol )

by criss cross do you mean paint one coat up and down and the other across?

Also with a foundation paint should I just cover the entire model in the yellow and then paint over it with my other colors?

Usually people coat it in black for purpose of creating shades and shadows.

If your main color is yellow for example , it would probably be easier for you to coat the whole thing in yellow instead.
its hard to make suggestion without knowing your color scheme :x

I know... but its hard to tell as where they are applied on makes a huge difference....

for example Imperial Fist is still Yellow black white .

Here you go , have fun with it and lets see what it looks like ^_~

I undercoat black so that all the lines and joints in the armor are black, saving me the time of lining everything later. And with the foundation paints like iyanden darksun, they cover black pretty well. Two coats of the foundation, leaving the black showing in all the cracks and joints, then a coat of your main color of yellow over that and finally highlight with an even lighter yellow, or your yellow mixed with white in a fifty/fifty ratio. Or something along those lines.
It can be a lot of work with light colors.

These were concepts of my color scheme.
Any thoughts? Comments?

I think the 5th one is my favorite choice so far

If your scheme is like that, I'd prime it black, basecoat with the foundation yellow on the main sections of his body, but try not to coat over the kneepads and don't paint the power-pack. Then put down the red, and put clean up the black last. Go through and clean up the foundations before you move on to put your colors on it. Good work with that template.

Im a little confused with terms. When you mean "prime" it black is that the undercoat or is that what you mean for "basecoat"?
It sucks a bit because all my guys are already undercoated black :(. Ive tried to take the undercoat off with Simple Green and Super Clean but nothing seems to get that damn undercoat off lol.

Priming is the first layer you put on a mini, designed to help paint adhere to the miniature its normally bought in the form of spraycans or gesso but occasionally you can find some paintons
after the primer you put on your basecoat then highlight one then wash then highlight two, in my basic painting method at least

So if I sprayed chaos black on first that would be considered a primer?

And then Id put the foundation yellow down which would be my base coat then wash with sunburst yellow and then go in with my detail brush and finish it?

Also another question. Is it better to paint an assembled marine or leave his arms and bolter off and paint him that way?

GW chaos black spraypaint is a primer yes.

for your marines i advise you prime black, paint the yellow bits with your iyanden darksun as the undercoat (the undercoat is a coat designed to give a colour something to paint on) then sunburst yellow basecoat, gryphone sepia wash then highlight back to sunburst yellow and final highlight of 50/50 sunburst yellow and skull white (or bleached bone instead of skull white).

Prime white then use P3's Cygnus yellow and if you botch the black onto the yellow Menoth White base is the key the redo the yellow.

It was between the 3rd and last one for me. Why did you like the third one more than the last?

I think its too late now to prime white lol.
I primed black and cant take it off.... so I have to work with black primer which I think will be okay. Just take awhile to paint my guys with all the layers I will have to do

Foundations will make it take the same amount of coats. White primer will make your yellows brighter, while a black primer will darken it slightly, but you won't have black showing through or anything. Its down to personal preferance.

I cant use p3 menith because Ive already primed with black so white over black wont work well.

@Dark so you think just use black primer (like I already did and cant change easily lol) and then use foundation then original colored yellow right?

I used the base (off white) worked fine over black.
