Hmm okay. Well what Im going to try is three types, I will choose the result that was easiest with best results and then do all of them that way.
I am trying to go over black basecoat with lots of thin layers of sunburst yellow, looks okay so far just taking awhile.
I will then try one with foundation paint and then sunburst
and lastly I will try a thin layer or white base over the black then try sunburst
I will let you know how it turns out! Automatically Appended Next Post: Wanted to ask this question before I did it so I wouldnt have to strip MORE models.
With using foundation paint do you want to avoid the detail because its such a thick paint and it might fill it in then there would be not detail?
Thanks

So I tried another go at the SM painter to figure out color schemes and I came out with these. Looking at them here I realize that adding the red is a little too much I think. Im leaning towards the first one, what do you guys think?

The first scheme is the one you seek.
Red may do well for weapon casings. Two main colors seem enough for me.

1st one ....
Maybe you should have the helmets in another colour ?
Maybe all yellow but a black stripe ? That would look much cooler Automatically Appended Next Post: From my point of wiew Automatically Appended Next Post: And the foundation paints CAN go into and on detail , just make sure that it doesnt fill up or cover it completely ...

A gd fast method of gettin a decent yellow wit shading is:
White primer
Followed by basecoat of orange
Followed by a wash of yellow ink
Then highlight raised areas wit the yellow paint

Alright so heres the FIRST look at my space marines.
This is just one SM model. This is still not done, havent really done touchups or anything to finish because Im not sure what to do now...
Do you guys think I should leave it as is and add detail then do finishing things or what? For the secondary armor plates and soft armor I was thinking of dry brushing something onto them any thoughts?
Any comments are welcome.
Remember FIRST time painter here and its not done or touched up so be gentle lol

I cant use white primer Ive already primed black and priming anymore is going to just ruin the model, it will have no detail.
Can I still get rid of the mould lines after its painted?

Yes, cameras do that to all of us. Your primer seems not to have been shaken sufficiently, leading to that bumpy texture. Something you can see, especially on the side views, are those raised lines. Those are mold lines. Just shave those off with a hobby knife (stroke down the leg gently, as if you were shaving wood). Amazing job on the eyes for a beginer. Relatively crisp, good assembly. You are off to a great start. What you need to do now is get an assortment of brushes and as many different paints as you can. Once you have them, you'll find a use for them and it will improve your quality dramatically. For example, washing Badab Black and rehighlighting will darken the panels and hatches on his arms and legs. You'll also be able to do simple hightling on his bolter once you have a lighter metalic and a black wash. Watch this guy on YouTube. He is also here on Dakka, and he knows what he is doing. These tutorials will get you up to speed on highlighting faster than anything else I've seen: http://www.youtube.com/user/awesomepaintjob#play/uploads/15/Tc7etuOuaS8 http://www.youtube.com/user/awesomepaintjob#play/uploads/14/Nxtfs7MKHEs EDIT: Also, this technique is invaluable for painting eyes and lenses. It is very difficult, so you might not want to use it yet, but it is good to know about: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?catId=cat380004&categoryId=400035§ion=&pIndex=1&aId=1100010&start=2

Thanks Dark.
I will have to pick up a hobby knife lol. Ya I didnt really know what I was doing for the first bit of painting (I still dont but I know a bit more) so I kinda botched the primer job but hopefully that bumpy texture can work in my favor if I incorporate it into his armor somehow.
If I put a wash on there wont it screw up all the color I already have on it?
PS that guy on youtube is amazing lol

I like the paint scheme a lot. Very hornet looking. The only real thing that I'd suggest is thinning out your paints a little bit. It might just be overprimed too, but I think it's just a case of the yellow being applied too thickly and too much at one time as the black areas seem to hold their details better. Just add a few drops of water and paint in thinner coats next time. Picking up some Devlan mud or other brown(ish) wash will also help bring out the details on your yellows a lot more.
Otherwise, I really like this colour scheme. It has a lot of possibilities

Thanks meta.
Its not the thick paints, I overprimed. Like I said before I did a bad job on some of these priming. I did many many many layers of thin yellow to get it like this where you dont see black coming through.
Im using a foundation paint on another marine, so I will compare the two end products and then paint the rest of my force depending on which was faster, better quality, and easier

Ah, try putting down a thinned coat or two of white where you're going to paint yellow, as that'll help a lot. There'll still be a bit of black showing through on the really flat areas, but the white will hold a lot better and the black won't show through as much. If you want to dull the yellow too so that it isn't so bright, painting it over a lightened and thinned snakebite leather base (about 80/20 SBL>SkWh) can give it sort of a ruddy, worn look if you decide you want something less bright.
