If my commander has a storm bolter and is attached to a sterngaurd squad, would he benefit from the special ammuniton rule?

I say yes because the stormbolter is described as two bolters straped together, but I have heard diffrently.

No, Sternguard and Sternguard only get to use their Special Ammunition wargear. Which can only be fired out of Boltguns (Bolters) or Combi-Bolters.

1) Only Sternguard get the ammo
2) It only affects Bolters. Not Storm Bolters/Heavy Bolters/Bolt Pistols/Banana Bolters.

I would like to point out that it says each model in the sternagurd unit, which in theroy, means that ANY model in the unit with a boltgun ( i still argue that stormbolter/heavybolter would count, as they are still a BOLTGUNS just fireing at diffrent rates) would benefit from the special ammunition.

"Each boltgun-armed model in a Sternguard Veteran squad automatically comes with several special ammunition types."

IC's are not part of the Sternguard Veteran Squad. They are Attached to it yes, but they are no more a part of the unit than their Rhino. As such, they cannot use the Special Ammunition.

The special rule is for sternguard, as stated, and does not pass on to any models joining the unit.

Also, a heavy or storm bolter are not your average bolters.
A bolter or combi are basic bolters using basic ammunition.
A storm and heavy are much more different (for example, the heavy bolter uses much larger rounds)
So they are not bolters, as thier name suggests, they are a variation.

they dont just have different rates of fire, they have different weapon types and profiles, and in the case of heavy bolters, are not even firing the same ammunition.

I wish.

Sadly a Boltgun is a specific stated synonym for a Bolter. If it said "Bolt weapons" or "Bolt technology" then sure, but it unfortunately does not.

A Stormbolter is a logical possibility as far as the fluff is concerned, but it is still not a Boltgun or a Bolter as far as the weapon description is concerned. A Heavy Bolter is an utterly different weapon altogether so that's not even in question.

Well, Hellfire rounds are a special wargear bought by IC's (and Cassius ) and Hellfire Shells are altogether different.

Think of it from a real-life scenario (dumb as it sounds).

Even if the IC were to join the sternguard squad, it is very unlikely that his weapon would accept the magazines that a sternguard might graciously give him, especially since most commanders carry ancient weapons that are almost relics.

The difference between commitment and involvement is like eggs and ham; the ckicken was "involved", the pig was "comitted".

Boltguns are Boltguns (bolters). Storm Bolters are Storm Bolters. Heavy Bolters are Heavy Bolters. They are all different weapons. Yes they are all 'Bolt' weapons, but still different. And like Gwar said, it does say "Each Boltgun-armed model in a Sternguard Veteran Squad" and not "Each Bolt weapon armed model in a Sternguard Veteran Squad.".

Indeed. Even if he had Hellfire shells, they wouldn't be Normal Thrice Blessed Shells of The Divine Emperors Wrath, no, they would be Quintuple Super Thrice Extra Blessed Hellfire Doom Shells of The Most Holy Emperors Most Holy Wrath.

I see your point. However much I would like to do it, I cant have a stormbolter fire thouse rounds. Because Gwar! said it was so, it must be true. Thanks for the clarification. I will be asking a red shirt next time I go though, because I feel, fluff wise, it should work.

Fluff and rules are 2 different things alltogether.
So why ask a Q. on here if you dont want to accept the answer?

Mkay..but the rule clearly states what the model has to be armed with, a Boltgun. Plus fluff has no actual place in the rules, as per fluff, half my Tac squad should be able to take on an entire 1500 points Ork army and not lose a single Marine.

Because if the answer was "yes you can" then he would've accepted it and used Dakka as 'proof' next time he played someone who questioned it.

Welcome to Dakka, HQ of flamed threads and so on. As you see here...I noticed this after my first couple post..You rarely get a straight answer to what your asking and half the time, if you do get informative informatin about what you are asking, you get flamed and told how dumb you are or how annoying you are for asking what you asked. Just a bunch of BS, ignore this thread and just browse in the painting section, those guys do help.

Or we get annoyed when, having received a perfectly valid and polite answer, the OP then goes and throws it back in our faces, despite not even taking the time to search for a question that has been asked a lot of times before.

I can see this escalating into flame war status, so as of now stop posting in this forum. We dont want another flame war on our hands now do we? I admit I did something stupid, I typed before I thought, and I didnt search for simaler forums. I also keeped pushing my point even after I had been proven wrong. I pulled a stupid, I admit it and am ashamed that I started the thread in the first place, so lets just drop it and move on with our lives okay?
