I got a new Ork Trukk a little while ago. While checking out the parts, the driver's head reminded me of the old Rat Fink character which got me started thinking about all the old hot rod books I had while growing up. After doing some research I found that when they wanted to do a serious candy-apple red they would use a metal flake gold (!) basecoat and then a translucent red over the top. Well... I just had to try that. I used the standard GW gold for the basecoat and then mixed blood red with gloss 'ard coat as the second coat. Learned an important lesson. If you screw this up it's really hard to repaint just a small section. In the end, it would probably work better on something with curves. The gold really only sparkles through on the rounded surfaces and the trukk has very few of those. The driver and gunner were both fairly standard paint jobs, but I did use the metal-flake basecoat and colour mixed with gloss topcoat to try and get that seventies metal-flake look.

I left the front armour plating off so as to preserve the screamy-mouth look of the motor, and replaced the trukk-style exhaust pipe on the side of the motor with a second set of the more dragster looking pipes.

I'd been contemplating a trukk borne squad of 'ard shoota boyz to try and sit on objectives. Since I'd be throwing them in harms way in a tiny trukk and I wanted to stick with a sort of seventies motor look I decided I'd paint them all like period appropriate motorcycle daredevils. I would like to thank www.cyclejumpers.com for providing a mutli-page archive of the costumes worn by the brave folks who hurl themselves over things on motorbikes. They've been a most useful resource. So far I've only got a few done, but I'm working through them fairly steadily.

The Nob, based on a WHFB Black Ork is painted like 1974 Evel Knievel, while the boy to the right is painted like Bob Pleso, circa 1973. It's a massive change from my other orks, but hey, these guys are specialists.

I don't see a very large difference between Evel Knevil and Bob Pleso's schemes, really. Other than that, realy great work, dude! Love the painting on both the truck and the boyz!

There really isn't that much difference. Evel has more stars and stripes, while Bob goes for simple red stripes down the legs. There are a lot of uniforms featuring a white base with blue stripes with red trim and white stars.

Four scholars at Oxford were making their way down the street, and happened to see a group of ladies of the evening. “What’s this?” said the first. “A jam of tarts?” “Nay,” said the second, “an essay of Trollope’s.” “Rather, a flourish of strumpets,” advanced the third. “No, gentlemen,” concluded the last. “Here we have an anthology of pros.”

Yeah, as I'm painting them I keep thinking "these guys should be warbikers. Warbikers with little Evel Knievel capes..."

That may yet happen, but I need to finish this squad first, and then paint my last modded Killa Kan.

The Trukk I'm not really buying. Just looks like a well painted Trukk to me. Those two boyz are awesome though.

I also wish the words "epic" and "win" were illegalized outside of their original meanings, but that's neither here nor there.

MORE!

On the right we have Robbie Knievel 1979, in the middle we have Evel Knievel 1975 and on the left we have "Oh to hell with this I'm making up my own colour scheme" 2011.

After having gone through a few more combinations I'm thinking about sticking to the classic EK look, white suit, blue stripes with red trim and white stars. It seems to look the best. Maybe a mix of blue stripes and red stripes. Changing the whole body colour sorta breaks the cohesive look of the unit.

I've learned a few interesting things working on these.

A: the spell checker doesn't recognize "Evel", although it does recognize "Knievel".

B: translucent layers of paint show brush-strokes like nothing else I've worked with.

Everywhere I'm not supposed to be.

If the trukk's driver was reaching up to grab an obnoxiously tall gear shift, it would really solidify that whole Rat Fink look. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoy the hell out of it and those boys! Fantastic work!

I've seen the trukk in person, and the pix really don't do it justice. The candy apple red has great depth irc, and really does make the trukk distinctive.

And yes, the boyz are all win.

The stock shifter from the trukk does have a skull for a shift knob. It needs to be way taller, but it's a good start. Maybe the next one... His eyes need to bug out a little farther too.

Got another boy finished, but I haven't had a chance to get a photo uploaded yet.

Okay, that took longer than I was hoping, but they're DONE. Here's the final seven, bringing the squad up to a trukk filling twelve.

What have I learned from this?
Painting translucent things is a pain.
The plastic boy pack needs more helmet variety.
I'm not sure "1970's motorcycle stuntmen" was a theme capable of supporting a whole squad. I started to get bored towards the end. To answer King Cracker's question, I'm only doing this squad. I certainly need to do one biker nob in this style though.

Well 1 mob is fine, those guys look awesome. Itll be hard for you to take them off the table when they die lol.

I also agree on the helmet boyz heads. I made an Ard boyz mob to fit in a trukk (why not, it was fun to make, and I never play them as ard boyz lol) and they all had the helmets and a face mask I made. I thought the same thing, theres only like 3 and thats it. Gets a little boring after awhile

This RAWKS. Even with the spelling of rocks it is an under statement. My wife usually rolls her eyes at most things of this nature, even she thought these guys were cool! I can see how you would be pulling hair out after 12 of them, but it is painted to a nice standard, trukk is great too. This is why I like orks, it does not look odd on a table and fits them to a T.

Nasty Nob

Cary, NC

This is seriously awesome. Not totally awesome, but very close.

To make this totally awesome, I would suggest:

This trukk should have clouds of dust/exhaust spewing from it.

It also needs a bug-eyed squig with long flapping tongue (I think you'll find an appropriate squig in the fantasy squig line). Orks are too beady eyed to be bug-eyed, and any Rat Fink inspired rig needs some bug-eyes and tongue.

The nob desperately needs a power klaw. This is not for game-play reasons. This is so he can be known as.....

wait for it...

Evil Kan-eater!

Also, whenever you get a crash result that ends up with the boys piling out of the trukk, you should end it with "Ta-da!"
