Well what are you looking for. A simple army to get you started? Or do you want to jump right in with grey knights?
I find orks a bit restraining. You see the trick is with orks is to theme your army around one unit, some players just get loads of orks, some get a load of battlewagon tanks to transport the orks into the foe, etc. But that means you should stick to that theme, also try to get orks into close combat.
with CSM you can dabble a bit more, they're mostly shooty, but have some powerful assault units too.
Guards are always shooty, if you like tanks, cannons, and massed infantry fire, this is for you.
Grey knight have more complicated rules, but when you get used to them, they can be the strongest army in the game, have nearly no weakness. But you can sometimes end up with stick from other players for using an army Games Workshop are so biased about.

I play CSM and Orks, my friend plays Guard.

CSM is my favorite, because you can make an army that does effectively assault, although they are mostly shooty.

Orks, as I've found, are the cheapest if you compare price ($) with the amount of models you get, but they need to be in close combat to do anything. (I have two squads of 30 that lose 30-50% of their number before I get them into CC.) Orks have Ballistic Skill 2, so they're not so great for shooting.

Also, Guard are, like zilegil said, purely shooty. They get tanks up the wazoo, but their infantry is pretty bad.

Good advise, sadly i already know most of it anyway. Um anyone ho can really tip the balance like i dont give alink to psychology test to figure out what army to use or get a inspiring video or some epic fluff.

I'm at your window

orks and tyranids are the cheapest

Tali'Zorah: I appreciate what you're doing here, Shepard.
Commander Shepard: Well, I care deeply about the quarian people.
Tali'Zorah: It's good to be back on the Normandy.
Commander Shepard: Let me know if it's too quiet for you to sleep, and I'll find you someplace louder.
Tali'Zorah: Hmm.
Garrus Vakarian: Uh, I was there when you two had your thing, remember? Just get a room and work it out.

Another thing to bear in mind is painting, for example you will be painting a lot more guardsmen or orks at 1000 points than you would be with CSM or grey knights.

4000 pts

2500 pts (half Flesh Tearers, soon to be all)

Well they haven't brought out a battleforce yet, but I can give you a summing up.
The bulk of the army is made up of termies and strike squads, but then you get the lighter specialists such as the ranged purgation squads, the GK equivalent to devastator marines, and the assaulty and fast interceptors, GK equivalent of the marine assault squad. You probably guessed that though.
So, they are pretty much marines only stronger and more assault based. They form small armies. I've played a lot of marine players and I can tell you that a tactical squad can take a lot of punishment to get rid of, Grey knights give marines a rather offensive air, paired with marine armor save, makes them pretty deadly.
From what I have heard, they are good at fighting orks and deamons mostly. They have no knowen weakness, short of plasma weapons, and power swords.

I'd start with CSMs. There SMs so soak up most of your enemies fire, but still shoot and assault beautifully and versatilely. Also, they get loads of extra cool rules and psychic powers, and are easy but good to paint and convert.

Grey Knights are definitely cool. And fun.

To start with, I'd head down to your nearest Games Workshop and talk to the Staff Members there. They can answer all your questions regarding Grey Knights - and the game in general - and also make some suggestions as to what you should purchase first, to get your Grey Knight army on the road.

Ah. In that case, it would be hugely beneficial if you found a Games Workshop near you. They can explain the basics of the game to you, and even give you a short demo game.

Do you have Codex: Grey Knights?

Have you thought about Dark Eldar? Not fantastically resilient but a well balanced army in that you can have foot slogging haemonculus / grotesque / wrack army or a wych cult zipping about the palce slashing ears and noses off as you please, and the standard warriors are pretty good shooty units.

I know they're not an option that you listed but perhaps one to consider.

If you're looking to stick with the options that you listed I'd edge towards GK, purely as I think the miniatures are just that bit cooler than the others. You'll never have as many units on the table top but you'll be able to a damned site more damage with them.
