Hey guys
So to avoid clogging up the valkyrie thread with tons of base pics, we decided to start a dedicated thread, and also to hopefully draw people in who aren't interested in the lowly footsloggers of the Guard. If we get round to doing other bits like armour plates and stuff they'll go in here as well.
The other day I found an old Grey Knight terminator I painted about 6 or 7 years ago I think, whenever the Daemonhunters codex originally came out, minus the end of his spear. Luckily I found an unpainted arm with the same weapon, so a quick bit of pinning later and he's ready to get smiting again. I'm not the best painter but I was happy with these guys. Once he's done I'm going to slap a custom base on him.
One of the things we're working on is nice display bases for command squads and whatnot, these are very much work in progress, but the pics give an idea of where we're going with it. I've also got to take some pics of the wolf bases we CNCed the other night, I'll try and get some up before the end of the weekend. To save me reposting all the pics of our other bases, anyone who hasn't seen them can check them out on http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/358792.page
Cheers guys

Hi all
Been a busy day today, me and the girlfriend went out on our bikes and just happened to visit Hobbycraft, who just happened to have a few AOBR boxes in. Well, how could I refuse... Also spent a couple of hours tonight modelling up a dread-sized thunder hammer for my work-mate's GK dread. I've tried to keep it so that I only have to cut it from 2 sides on a simple sprue, so fingers crossed I can cut it tomorrow, or at least get the roughing done. From some angles the hammer head looks a bit big, but then it's a dread not some skinny little wraithlord.

Hi all
So the weekend was gorgeous down here, did a fair bit of cycling with my girlfriend but still managed to find a bit of time to do some bits. I ran off some prototypes for some 3D bases, including some designs with cut-outs that we could drop laser-engraved panels into. We're trying to work out the best way to combine lasering and CNCing, because the laser has really good resolution and speed, but you can only sort of bodge 3D-ness by altering power settings, while the CNC is limited by the size of the tool and can be slow but gives the best finish of all the prototyping techniques and gives you total control of the 3D-ness (there has got to be a better term) of the model. I'm trying to find a good combination for my own AOBR marines.
I also got the hammer cutting, the roughing pass finished today while I was at work and I've just got the finishing pass going. The head of the hammer is a leetle bit big but I split the shaft from the head (sounds painful) so I may model up a spear head as an alternative.
Cheers all, here's some pics! Sorry for the dodgy lighting Ed's got the good camera, the swine.

Hi all
just a quick precursor to a proper update... I got some prototypes for my own marines' bases cut, and got a mould poured today, so will be casting up a few today ready for the weekend woohoo! Also got the first draft of the GK dread hammer done, though there was a bit of an accident and some stuff needs changing. Pics and words tomorrow when I get a chance to take some proper pictures in the workshop!
@Asylum_Inmate
I will get some pics of a mini on some clear bases this weekend. My workmate's got some to put some GKs so I will get some nice pics off him when he's done.

Hi all
It's been a few days since an update, it's been quite a busy week finishing everything up at work (a pair of legs for a spanish girl, who wanted the same feet as the last pair of legs I made. I love doing the same job twice ) ready for my holiday but I got a fair bit of modelling done.
I spent the first part of the week cutting out the custom hammer for my mate's dread, the lesson here is double check measurements before wasting a big chunk of chemiwood as it turned out to be the comically oversized hammer of ultimate doom. The shaft is ok though so I've started reproportioning the head ready for the next go. I didn't finish the cutting as the material came off the CNC bed and took a whole lot of damage as the tool carried on cutting, until it eventually snapped. Since I was running out of 0.5mm bits I figured it was probably best to cut my losses on that one. It should look pretty sweet with the new head on the next go.
The other project I worked on was some sexy personalised bases for my AoBR marines and terminators. The terminator bases didn't work at first but I've since sussed out why and now I'm cutting a new set of masters for moulding, with bases for assault, devastator and tactical marines (regular and AoBR), plus a 40mm terminator base and a couple of plates to put on tanks and stuff. I've cast up some of the tactical bases off the first set and actually started painting my first minis in over 4 years woohoo! I've painted a tester that I made up as I went along, I reckon I might change the black areas to bone as I'm not too keen on the black highlighting. I'll never win any Golden Daemons but I'm pretty pleased with how the first guy turned out. The photo set-up and camera I used are absolutely merciless, I like to think it looks a bit better in the flesh, especially if you're as blind as I am
Cheers all, I hope to get some more updates on the Valkyrie project in the next few weeks once I've got some good chemiwood in.

Really cool work!
Where do you source the larger acrylic display bases from (assuming it's acrylic)?
Do you pour those yourself?
I'm looking to make something similar for use as movement trays for my Orks.

Thanks for the comments guys!
@More Dakka
The large bases are our own designs that we laser cut straight out of a sheet of acrylic. The WarMill base on the purple marine is a resin pour. I've just poured enough to base all the AoBR marines on, and I'm currently CNCing a new set to do terminators and ones with assault and devastator engraved on the scrolls.
@SilverMK2
Once I get round to buying, begging or making a command squad we'll get some pics up of them on a big display base. One of our problems is having too many ideas for things to work on, so everything's kind of getting developed at the same time, and these still need a bit of tweaking. If only the evenings were about 12 hours longer we'd be sorted

Hey!
We had a request for some less than ordinary movement trays from a fellow Dakkerite - as he was fed up moving 60 boys in his first turn of movement!
So the brief was to replicate something that looks like a 5 on the face of a D6 - whilst keeping all units within coherency! As an Ork player, we felt something Orkish would be most appropriate!
The image below is more a taster of whats to come really, until we get some more cut, designs finalised, and some sexy pictures taken!
What you can see in this pic - a base big enough for 5 guys on 25mm bases! wither troops or perhaps a command squad!
Eldar, Ork and Marines - the bottom plate has a small recess which is apace enough for a small washer - so magnets on the underside of our bases can be inserted and keep the models in place!
Please give us your thoughts and suggestions - as they are still in their prototype stages!!

Haha! Those are great. The x shaped design would be good for moving large units as you can interlace them to get models closer together, or keep them all spread out. Very nice indeed. Perhaps you might consider a design similar to... oh, I don't know... 3 small circles formed in the shape of a triangle? Also would be good if they were "pre-drilled" with a recess or hole in the middle for adding a magnet/pin to to secure models in place.

@SilverMK2:
I guess you cannot see depth very well here, the bases are in two levels, so the circles are where you would put your slotta bases and would be flush with the surface of the base (as its 3mm acrylic )
Thanks for the overall niceness in your reply
What race would have the triangles? or would that be a generic shape - i guess it helps to group[ them together
Ed
edit - also, the space for the washer is recessed, but i think i would drill into the material as it gives a cleaner cut - and is quicker

Making them flush with the surface would help and I suppose you can then simply glue a magnet to the centre of the depression to secure your models The magnet would just add extra security (especially if you are using top heavy or metal models) so they don't fall off when you move the "movement tray". And as for what race... it could actually be several. *coughcoughcough* Oh dear, don't know where that came from

Hello!
We had some concern over the layout and blast markers - what would your thoughts / concerns be?
Not played in along time so have been utilising google to help us out
So I've had a play around with the trays. Interestingly, the big blast marker is 126mm across, which is 1mm bigger than it's possible to spread 3 bases apart. Therefore If you go for an X arrangement, a hit on the centre ork would technically hit all 5, but only by 0.5mm. This means that if someone was sharp enough to do the maths and anal enough that they'd want to win at all costs and you had an X arrangement they would be able to claim a hit on all 5 orks even though the on the table the marker may not touch all the orks. If you need absolute safety from blast markers technically the best arrangement is either an M shape, in which the maximum that can be hit is 3 or 4 depending on how much you stretch the shape, or a V shape, where the absolute most that can be hit is 3, and allows you to interlock them to get the mob in a compact space. The downside to these is that they don't lend themselves as well to pretty shapes.
Hopefully this pic explains it better than the wall of text:
I guess really it comes down to how friendly the people you play against are. Personally, I'd take my chances that you're only going to get that perfect hit on a group of 5 once in a blue moon, but for absolute safety the V shape would be your best bet.
So if you managed to read through that, as concerned gamers...what would you suggest?!
Cheers
Harry - Warmill

The "W" shaped bases look to be the best idea in terms of minimising the threat of blasts on a single base. However, as I suggested earlier, most people would probably be bunching their bases up anyway (as most tables don't have the space for everything to spread out massively).
The "X" designs do look pretty cool as well...

Hi all
just a quick update to show off the improved custom bases for me and Ed's marines, unfortunately due to being off work I won't be able to pour a mould for a while which sucks, but it gives me time to get the Ork versions ready for when I do go back. The mould will give us bases for the AoBR marines, multipart tactical, assault and devastator marines, and terminators, as well as a couple of Warmill plates for us to stick on tanks and dreads and what-not. The Ork version will be much the same options, but with suitably orky logos and name plates, and a different font for the engraving.
On another exciting note, we've just started cutting a prototype for "generic APC" doors that should let us make custom chapter doors pretty economically. Watch this space for some pics when we've got a few made up!
Cheers all
