Looking good

Will be interesting to see the custom doors.

One thing I just thought of though - if you can tool the clear plastic, have you thought about creating shield shapes with lightning etched into it? Then people can paint the etch, leaving the rest of the shield clear - a rather effective energy shield - especially if you can produce some kind of solid outer rim/handle arrangement that the clear section can be slotted into...

Hi all

Not much to show at the moment as we're busy developing a few projects, but here's a sneak peek at some prototypes for our APC doors fresh off the CNC! They still need a bit of tweaking but it shows the direction we're going in. I'm also busy making some custom bases for our personal Orks, still creating data but I hope to cut them in the next couple of days.

Cheers

@Foda_Bett

Funny you should ask that, the hammer was originally going to be a halberd until my mate decided he preferred the thunder hammer. We've got a design for a halberd head with a clear highly engraved acrylic blade that slots into the shaft, which is why the hammerhead is cut separate from the shaft. When we get round to it I'll post pics, at the moment it's one project of many!

I've been through this thread with interest, and now i'm wondering just how small of a piece can you make from the clear cuts. IE: what's the chances of getting fancy looking blades for Farseer's, warlocks, banshees, autarchs, and the avenger exarch.

and then there's the possibility of fancy flight bases for my Grav tanks.

Hi all

Yesterday was mostly about bbq, beer and a little bit of painting, but we also managed to prototype a sexy display base for those special characters and whatnot. The 40mm base is heavily engraved with stepped feathers and should look pretty sweet painted up in a stone-y effect. I'm thinking maybe a scroll or something between the wings with some embossed text would finish it off nicely, but let us know what you think!

More updates in the week, including hopefully the oversized force halberd.

Cheers all

40mm base that fits in scenic surround. Once we've got a couple cast up we'll stick some terminators on them.

Yeah they are lovely, harry is pwning with his CNC!

He's working on another version of the above as I type, it should make a lovely mould!

Above is an updated movement tray for More Dakka's Orks!

We had to change the layout quite dramatically, it now has a more efficient use of material, and deploy-ability due to the lower profile. The layout also makes it look like the center model standing a little further forward - ideal for nobz all whilst keeping coherency and being as blast marker efficient as poss.

Hope he likes them!

Edward

Also - thanks for the kind comments

Your comment didn't go unnoticed, just busy on other bits

If your seriously considering using some clear acrylic for the blades, pm us and we can fit in a sample somewhere. our initial concern would bee that the edges would be flat, and you would loose allot of the features that make a blade, well...a blade

I just stumbled onto this blog again, and I have to say, it all looks amazing! You should definitely open a store or something! I think a lot of people would love to buy things like this!!

Those clear basses specifically are absolutely fantastic! One thing that has always bugged me is when you see a squad with, for example, grass-flocked bases on a urban style board... I think the one thing I dislike more is an unpainted basses!

These seem like a fantastic solution! And I'm definitely considering them for my next army!

Hello!

Been working on a few ideas today, one of these being a response to sebastionSynn for his Eldar weapon upgrades!

The brief was for a range of standard and 'fancy engraved' swords and spear heads to replace the standard citadel ones.

comments / suggestions?

Hi all

A quick update tonight, we've been working on some symbols to engrave on clear bases in preparation for getting a couple of ranges on Ebay, these will be pretty generic, like the Templar bases, with things like fists, swords, scrolls, etc, so could be suitable for a whole range of armies.

We've also been working on a very nice display base for characters and special figures, as seen a few posts above. This is being designed to have panels that can be customised with different names and symbols if people want one for their own armies, we just did an Ultramarines one to test ourselves . Once I go back to work I'll get a mould poured and we'll cast a couple up to show what can be done. If people like them maybe we'll work on a few other designs. Being on holiday and away from work's vac chamber is killing me, I've never wanted to be in work during a holiday before!

I know there's a lot of hate for the Ultrasmurfs round here, but we don't have a logo for our own marines yet!

[Thumb - 2011-04-26 21.08.20.jpg]
The middle section of the scroll and the circle with the Ultra logo in will be recessed to let us drop in laser engraved parts with custom names and logos in.

[Thumb - 2011-04-26 21.08.30.jpg]
The feathers are all stepped at different heights so should look pretty hot once we get some painted up. Should look like a temple or similar. The scroll will also have a recess for cutom name plates.

Holy crap!!

I want that Ultra base!

You know they make crystal clear resin. It takes 90 minutes to become hard, and then 3-5 days to reach "maximum hardness" but you can see through it. The stuff I have isn't through my usual dealer (I don't know where it came from), but my usual resin dealer is sending me a sample of their clear resin to see if I like it better.

I really really love your basing idea.

the only way you could possibly make it more awesome would be to add roman numerals to the tactical so you could have tactical I through X and make up squads or something...

I guess that would maybe be too much variety to sell though for 1 squad type.

This is a very cool thread, thanks for bringing new stuff to the Dakka table!

I am becoming very fond of the plain acrylic bases, although a beautiful and intricate base is great for display purposes, I really like the idea of the clear acrylic if I were to actually play the game. There is something cool about knowing that your army will always fit the board theme.

Funny you should say that, as that was our very first idea that got WarMill off the ground, I even made a bunch of drawings ready to make the bases, maybe I should revisit the idea. Once we get our eBay shop off the ground I think we can just add and add the different types of bases without diluting the look and feel to much.

As for the clear resin, we have used a range of them before, but they are quite finiky to get just right, as they often produce alot of bubbles, have to be baked to fully harden. also for the good stuff, it's very expensive!

Thanks for taking the time to read through and post comments guys

If you make up some heat resistant moulds you could try using the heat moulding/pourable clear plastic?

OK I have 2 questions,

1. Do you do any heavier/thicker versions of the acrylic bases? the reason I ask is that my chapter master is a conversion based on the Astorath the Grim figure which is quite top heavy and prone to falling over (same applies to the sanguinor model I believe) and as such would require a heavier base to prevent this from happening/ Also bases that are thicker are quite popular for mounting character pieces so they stand out from rank and file figures.

2. I know its kinda an established market but have you guys thought about doing marine shoulder pads? granted its nothing new in itself, however, those of us with homebrew chapters, could make use of a one-stop-shop for chapter personalisation. If the same chapter symbol design could be put on vehicle panels, bases and pads that would super-mega-double awesome

We can do bases in thicker acrylic, though we don't generally keep stuff much thicker than 5mm which is what the big Templar bases are engraved on. Although it is heavier it's only very slightly, and probably wouldn't be enough to make any difference to whether your model falls over or not. What we could do and would make a difference is to either cut a bigger base, say 40mm, with a 25mm radius engraved on it (I'm assuming this is the size of his base). The 25mm radius would then be the one you'd measure from for game purposes and could have some fancy stuff engraved around it.

The alternative is to do it like the big Ultramarine display base, where the guy is on a 25mm base that slots into a recess on a bigger 40mm base. You could then put the model in it to move hima round the board and stuff but could take him out for close combat or squeezing in narrow spaces where it's less likely to fall over. This would use more material and cost a little more, but would be more practical in game terms. We could engrave a recess for a magnet but this would add to the cost and wouldn't be clear then, but it is an option.

Hopefully this pic makes sense of my rambling ;P

If this is something you'd want to follow up, PM us and we'll discuss cost and design

Harry - Warmill

Lol guess you asked the second question while I was typing

Shoulder pads are something we could do, but it depends on how much interest there is. It probably wouldn't be economical for small batches of less than 20 or so, but with bigger orders it could make sense, or for a flat fee we could produce a mould that people can then use to cast their own. It really depends on if there's enough interest in it, as it would require a bit of experimentation.

Tank panels are a different matter though, which is what the Rhino doors posted earlier are for. We're designing them to have detailed laser-engraved panels slotted in, so someone could say to us "I'll have the door with the round panel with my custom chapter logo in, here's a picture of it, and my chapter's name on the scroll. I'll take 10 sets please (;P)". If there's enough interest we could extend the range to guard tanks and whatnot. It should make it economical enough for everyone to have a few sets of cutom doors and panels

Hope that answers everything, comments and suggestions are always welcome

These are very pretty! I've been thinking of (badly) making a mould for shoulder-pads/doors. I've seen this just in time.

I'd be interested in moulds for shoulder pads, if that idea is done.

Very tempted by some of those bases too...
I'm curious as to how much these are gonna hurt my wallet, what with me being a poor student though!
