Subject: Should weapon scopes have an effect in game?
|

So I was thinking that in 40k many soldiers have scoped weapons (e.g; A Space Marine with a Ultima Pattern Boltgun) that have no effect on the actual model. So I thought to myself...wouldn't it be cool if weapon attachments actually did something! So, here are my ideas:
Space marine tactical squads: The whole unit may take Ultima Scoped Boltguns for...30pts.
What do scopes do? Well the most realistic interpretation would be if they add +6" to weapon range. For example a Boltgun would be: R30" S4 AP5 Rapid Fire. What do you guys think? Would you prefer if they did +1 ballistic skill for one turn per game or perhaps made overwatch attacks at their normal ballistic skill? Go crazy guys and tell me what you think!

Sure, rules for scopes might be fun.
Just remember to think the scenario through for other armies than Spahz Mahreenz.
Tau Firewarriors have scopes, as does several Ork weapons.

Well I was just using space marines as an example. Automatically Appended Next Post: You could use those rules for any unit! As long as they have a scope or use some of the other rules I suggested or make your own for each faction.

Sorry Darkness, we're adding content to the game here, for those who wish to use it, whether you like it or not. Your options at this point are "Offer something constructive" or "Go somewhere else." We've been over the definition of constructive a multitude of times already; I don't like reporting your posts because when you DO decide to offer in, your ideas are insightful and interesting and fluff-coherent, and I don't want to lose that, but this is pretty drivel, even for you.

Just +1 BS doesn't make huge amounts of sense imo.
The simplest, most logical way I can think of (especially as a sort of 'free' universal rule) would be to use the following:
Scope:
Any model that choose to fire a weapon with a scope using the following profile:
Range: As weapon, Str: As Weapon, AP: As weapon, Type: Heavy 1,
Special Rules: The model using the scope gains +1 BS and the Precision Shot special rule until the end of the turn.
Monstrous Creatures and Vehicles may not use the Scope special rule.

Neither does adding an entirely new incredibly complicated rule.

Neither does adding an entirely new incredibly complicated rule. How is it incredibly complicated? XD You can choose to fire your gun at Heavy 1 to get +1BS and Precision Shots, which is basically what using a scope does - lets you be more accurate at the cost of speed. Straight +1 BS without costing 5 or 10 points is overpowered, and +1BS for one turn a game is a bit ish.

HI all.
I think Ovion proposed rule mimics real world use of scopes.
But since when has reality had anything to do with 40k...
Adding to BS or effective range is a major improvement , even with restricting it to 'move or fire'.
Simply allowing to re roll 1's to hit, makes them useful, but not overly powerful.(Slight boost to accuracy.)

Sounds good, what prices are you thinking, 2 PPM? Perhaps have it vary for each army (Marines have to pay more than guardsmen and Orks because they can make better use of it ( BS 5 marines at long range with precision shot)). Also, perhaps it cannot be used on heavy weapons since say a squad of devastators or an IG HWS with lascannons can reasonably expect to pick of an SC without eternal warrior in just one or two shooting phases (even if they don't, BS4 HWS are pretty beastly).

+1 BS doesn't make all to much sense to me IMO. I dont get how a scope would make someone better at firing a weapon? It still requires a certain level of skill to use a scope.

Most of these people are trained anyway.
But generally, using a scope increases your accuracy at range, you have to stop, take aim, track the target and fire.
Straight +1 doesn't make much sense, but the payoff does.

To me, a scope improves accuracy, and only to a certain extent enables the shooter to fire at greater distances. That being said, I think scopes should confer some sort of cover penalty, like -1 or -2 to cover saves. Maybe really good scopes ignore cover altogether?

Or, from everything I'm seeing here, scopes should be a shooting attack, not a weapon modification.
Scoped weapons-A squad declaring to fire with scoped weapons may fire at +1 bs and uses both the heavy weapon and precision shot special rules (can not be used for overwatch)

There is a lot of potential, of course with wysiwyg I have a lot of scopes already that may really up the cost of my force depending on the role the scope does.
The +1BS seems popular, but what about adding rending to a scoped weapon instead? Thats how the sniper rifles work in the game. Any ranged weapon with a scope has the rending special rule. That could even work on overwatch i'd think.

How about: If an infantry unit (Excluding IC's) are equipped with one or more scopes one model in that unit may hit automatically. you get one auto hit if you have up to 10 models, up to 20 models you get two auto hits, and up to 30 you get three auto hits etc)
