Subject: Dakka (unofficial) Monthly Painting Challenge Round 8: October 2015: Trick or Treat?
I'm back! Mwahahahaha! Huge thanks to Buttery Commissar for taking on hosting duties for last month's challenge!
For those who have somehow missed the 7 excellent challenges run so far (where have you been? Deep Space? ), this is a monthly competition open to all painters, whether you've won a Golden Demon or simply painted a Demon gold! At the end of each month, the entries are collected into a final showcase, in which the whole of Dakka can vote for their favourite entries, not just the best painted but also the coolest, most ambitious, funniest or simply the one you like the most! There is an ongoing League that these results contribute towards, which will run for 12 months before starting over in March next year.
The theme for this month's challenge is: Trick Or Treat?
This theme can be interpreted however you like, but here are some examples:
- Any miniature that has some kind of dual nature, such as an Ork disguised as a Space Marine or a guardsmen holding a live grenade behind his back.
- Any miniature that is scary, sneaky or otherwise threatening, the kind you'd give the Treat to rather than risk their (probably fatal) Trick. This could be anything from a Tyranid Genestealer to a vicious Skaven Assassin
- Any miniature that is devious, tricky or cunning, the kind that is likely to trick you whether you hand over the treat or not! Such creatures might include a Malifaux Gremlin, an Eldar Harlequin or a Night Goblin, among others.
- In the spirit of Halloween (spirit, geddit?), any miniature that is at all ghostly, ethereal or unearthly, from a lowly Zombie to a mighty Demon.
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 5 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month Following the vote, points will be awarded for the following:
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
The League
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st October and will end at midnight GMT on the 31st October. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.
So, all together now, trick or treat?

Far from my best work (the shading on the robes just did not turn out the way I wanted, I wonder what I should have done to make it look better...), but still adequate, as I am still learning. For those of you who don't know much about Cypher, here is a bit of background:
At the time of the Horus Heresy, some of the Dark Angels turned to Chaos. These traitors became known as the Fallen. After Horus' defeat, the Fallen went into hiding. Cypher was one of them. To prevent anyone from finding out about the Fallen, the Dark Angels have been rounding up every Fallen they can get their hands on. The one they want the most is Cypher. Many times they have come close to nabbing him, only to have him get away. The Black Templars chapter did manage to catch him, but he got away when the Dark Angels actually started fighting the Templars to get him (this is why the Dark Angels and the Black Templars hate each other). Cypher remains at large in the galaxy, always having some trick or other to avoid capture. No one knows his true agenda, although there are many rumors...

After shattering it's skull into a paste of bits and blood, the little mannequin noticed that he was in a pumpkin patch - a thought occurred to him; "I could make that thing look like 'jack-o-lantern'!"
It took the little mannequin a lot of effort to move the body into place, dragging it by one of it's arms, but the satisfaction from the overall effect made all the effort worthwhile!
"There couldn't be a better time for this than halloween!" he mused before going on his way.

The sound of jump packs screamed overhead, epistolary Kyaneus did not look up knowing it was shadow captain Korvydae and assault squad Garrulus rushing forward to strike down the target that they have been hunting for so long. Kyaneus and strike force Korvydae had come to Chapus two months earlier when the Ravenspire picked up a desperate plea for help from the Governor saying greyish green space marines with ooze leaking out of their joints had invaded their planet. The Master of Shadows had sent the strike force to liberate the planet with due hast since it laid only a few systems over from Deliverance. Since then Kyaneus and the strike force had been fighting the runious powers and its followers in the swamps where they had made their home. But today was to be different, today the Raven Guard had tracked down the leader of the Lords of Decay a foul sorcerer named Sobek. And as Korvydae streaked forward to smite the foe who had tried to destroy this world. but Kyaneus felt a pulse rip through the warp and it was at that moment he realized that they had failed and what ever Sobek was trying to conjure he was successful. And as the ground around him began to stir and limbs starting popping out from the decaying ground he summoned warp fire, knowing the battle ahead would be long and strenuous.
I'll be throwing my hat in the ring here as well and working on a lone Death Company marine (Possibly two, we'll see!) which are in my opinion some of the scariest marines you could ever expect to deal with.
I'm currently at work, sadly, but I will edit in proof pictures later once I can get home and snap a picture of the Death Company sprue I've been using to help build my Captain and Command Squad thus far.
Proof Picture:
Till then, take it easy folks.
-Red__Thirst-
Edit: I may let my entry be a Death Company Dreadnought... Not sure yet. Will decide and update my post here shortly once I get home in a few hours.
Edit 2: Proof Picture added!

You don't know me son, so I'll explain this to you once: If I ever kill you, you'll be awake, you'll be facing me, and you'll be armed.

@BC: Could I trouble you for some more info and/or a scale pic of that female magician? If she's eadily available and not tiny, I see a Zatanna for BMG happening at some point!
@Matthew: Yes you do!

OK, slightly tenuous connection to the topic, but it’s what I got. LotD counts-as. 40k breacher style squad; door knockers/kickers. Might not get all 5 of them done, but I want to finish at least two. And an ammo dump. I don’t know about the rest of you, but when I was younger my brother and I spread out our spoils after trick or treating and swapped stuff.
Woah! Who’s handing out melta bombs this year?
8th company barracks. Trade you for the combat knife?
Toss in a clip of hellfire rounds and you have a deal.
INSANE army lists still available!!!! Now being written in 8th edition format! I have Index Imperium 1, Index Imperium 2, Index Xenos 2, Codex Orks Codex Tyranids, Codex Blood Angels and Codex Space Marines!
PM me for an INSANE (100K+ points) if you desire.

Can't work out what I want to do at the moment, to give away my thoughts its either the "heres Jonney" scene from the shinning using orks but I'm worried I won't get in finished in time since my time in normally very limited or orks going treat or treating dressed in Star Wars Halloween costumes (to finish the ideas from last month on the Ork Star Wars theme). anyone want to push me in one direction or the other?
Although the one on the left looks undercoated, he is actually stripped. It is just the combination of poor photos combined with Dakka's gallery trying to compensate!
As a massive fan of Halloween and considering the finishing date of this particular contest I'd like to urge as many of you as possible to bear the season in mind as you dig deep into those bits boxes and collections of dusty models you've slightly forgotten about looking for something to do.
Here's mine:
One werewolf breaking free of a straitjacket. In a graveyard, (naturally).
If I had more time I'd try and do a real monster mash with a vampire, wraith, mummy etc. Alas time is a precious commodity these days and I'll only pledge what I'm sure I can complete.
It is using parts from the Skitarii strider and from the Dark Eldar Talos/Chronos kit... So by all accounts it will end up being a twisted creation of the Adeptus Mechanicus, something quite possibly from the labs of a borderline Heratek...
You say that I am crazy. I say that you are right!

This is kinda off topic but albinoork, does mechanicon still hold epic tournaments? I heard they did and I'm rather close. So that's nice. Looking great BTW! Nurgle?
