Reaction on their forum seemed rather negative, also the price is $175.

I will probably actually be quite good,

but if you bought 1st or 2nd edition you can still play them, if you buy this I bet in 5 years from now you won't be able to

so fine if you play a dungeon crawler for a bit until you 'win' or get bored with it, but if your a game collector (or casual horder) it's not going to be for you

Indeed. We ran over our first edition Descent with a car and could still play it.

I'm off to the patent office to apply for a web enabled rock paper scissors app that you play with another person in front of you. You both throw your little (non-gang) sign and then consult the app to see what the result is; the built in camera will record your sign and do all the necessary calculations via the power of the cloud! No one take the idea! I already called dibs! The Lizard/Spock add on will be paid DLC of course in addition to cosmetic only loot boxes (no Pay To Win here!).

In all seriousness, I'm not surprised they're doing this as I recall them first starting that with an xcom board game years ago and then continuing it with others like X-wing apparently (I'm out of the loop and just found out that recently). It's their thing now I guess and the multitude of chits/cards/custom dice must not have been enough.

Well, that is a hard pass for me. My group bought into Golem Arcana...quite the regret. Thankfully those minis work on a lot of other games.

I love Descent 1st and Imperial Assault 1st...so I suppose that will be my total entry into Descent. (2nd was quite the disappointment...on all fronts...).

I was really hoping that Descent 3rd would take the epic dungeons of Descent 1st with the campaign/skirmish play of IA into something good. Pity.

Considering they killed Mansions of Madness 2e, and fired all of their app developers less than a year ago, I refuse to trust this company even one iota, with games like this.

I'm shocked by how much I detest everything in that reveal from the app down to the concept art.

Some of the monster minis look decent.

I suspect this will find its way into a lot of junk bins in a few years...

What do you mean killed? They seem to have released yet another DLC not that long ago

I don't care for it either, but its better than their last attempt to emulate World of Warcraft. Terrinoth has never been a particularly compelling beyond a generic fantasy setting but it's different attempts to lift popular videogame styles has done it no favors.

It doesn't seem a third edition but a completely new and different game. However I do not like app driven board game so I will not buy it - I skipped Journey in Middle Earth too even though I am a lotr fan...

I think an app driven boardgame for story driven content is the best way to play those type of games but I'd only buy it if the app was open source.

Same here. And a required app to play makes this a pass for me. And I loved Descent and always hoped they'd do a true co-op crawl for it. << sigh >>

The app driven stuff works nicely for Mansions of Madness, with the open source app Valkyrie adding in new campaigns so I'm tentatively interested to see where this goes

Those are my exact sentiments about App driven games. They are just meant to be a temporarily supported item to get sales. I still remember when my buddy spent several hundred dollars on Golem Arcana. But good luck playing it now- in the meantime I can break out all my stuff for 40K 2nd Edition and still play.

I still plan on getting my son into playing wargames the exact same way I was introduced: With my 30-year old copy of BattleMasters.

I'm sure some of them have wives, too.

Lessee... FFG's laid off their RPG and videogame adaptation departments. (Asmodee is consolidating their RPGs, not dropping them. Dunno about the videogames.) FFG has a history of dropping support for "lifestyle" games, last one being Runewars, and maybe L5R card game as well.

Meanwhile, FFG games has a history of apps, introduced with Descent 2nd edition. I'm not seeing a thread on BGG about MoM2's app support being dropped, but didn't look closely.

BGG has a high demand for coops, but app interest is mixed. A common complaint about 2nd edition is that the owner always ended playing the Overlord. With KS crowding the dungeoncrawl market, an app-driven boardgame at least stands out, sorta. Also, with the Cult of the New, boardgames don't stay long on the tabletop, anyway. Descent 2nd edition was around for eight years, Descent 1st edition seven.

No hurry to pick up another dc, myself.

Considering that Mansions of Madness 2nd edition is still very successful, and the Descent 2nd edition app revived the game, it's a good thing.

There are plenty of non-app driven dungeon crawlers out there. It's okay if there's a few that use apps to simplify setup and play, and improve the purely coop play.

Let's face it, the Overlord vs Players mechanic is pretty tired for boardgames, and tiring for the one playing it. A GM in a TTRPG playing to win against his players is a terrible experience for players, the same goes for one in a boardgame.

Yeah, but like people said, the problem with games using app to work in its game system is that they only last as long as the said app. That's typically the kind of game you can't play anymore once support has ended.

I won't touch that edition for sure.

There's now an info page up on the FFG website: https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2020/10/22/descent-legends-of-the-dark/

Interesting to note this statement for those that are annoyed about this being 3rd edition Descent. It is not, it is apparently a different game, so can we get the thread title changed please?

FFG wrote:Is this the third edition of Descent: Journeys in the Dark?
Descent: Legends of the Dark is not the third edition of Descent: Journeys in the Dark. Although it shares the realm of Terrinoth and the top-level identity as a dungeon-crawling board game indicated by the Descent title, we see Legends of the Dark as a new addition to our catalog, rather than a third edition of Journeys in the Dark.

Although Journeys in the Dark featured the Road to Legend companion app, that game was always designed as a competitive experience, pitting one to four hero players against a single overlord player. Legends of the Dark harnesses its integrated companion app to deliver a cooperative game from the very beginning, freeing you and your friends to fully focus on becoming the heroes of Terrinoth.

Worked really well for X-Com as well. Honestly that game was the biggest breath of fresh air, and needs to be experienced by everyone. Really, really good.

And U-Boat - which would not function without the app.

Going against opinion here but I admire that they're trying to do something new and the app-driven format does give the designers and developers a lot more tools for them to use - and new experiences for the players too.

And how many more of Dungeon Crawler version XI do we actually need? The market is getting pretty crowded right now not least with Heroquest and the like making a comeback, it might be that FFG felt they had to try and do something new.

I don't mind app-games, MoM, X-Com, Journey into Middle-Earth and the app versions of Imperial Assault and Descent 2nd Ed are all games I like. There seem to be a few intriguing mechanics as well in this game.
What bothers me is:
- The ridiculous price, which is around the price for a all-in KS with several expansions and lots of stretch goals
- The atrocious artwork on the cards

My shelves are already full of various dungeon crawlers, I'll skip this one.

I don't know, having looked at the twitch video, it's quite a packed box. It takes a lot of space on the table.

They said there are also sleeves inside for the cards and that the miniature use a hard plastic (maybe more expensive to produce ?). I guess the box will include a code for the app as well.

All the cardboard terrain is apparently meant for more 3D, which is nice. So there's that as well - more components for that purpose, certainly.

As for the art design, it doesn't bother me so far.

From what they said in the video, the game is more narrative driven than the former Descent games. It's a fully coop game, the app is controlling all of the "dungeon master"' 's aspects. It made me remember the boardgame Legend of Zagor (I know, I'm not young).
