GAH! SCREW YOU THQ! YOU SUCK!
I'm so pissed off! Have you ever heard of a company not allowing their customers to progress past a certain level unless they BUY a code to allow them to do so?!
I bought a preowned copy and got stuck at level 5 because of this stupid bloody lock they've put on, now I have to spend buy 800 msp in order to get past this?!
Spoke to some woman called Vibeke at THQ Game Support and, honestly, I could punch the b!ch in the face.
For those about to buy, this only applies to pre-owned copies of the game where the elite code has already been applied by the previous owner.
Yes, I'm pissed off on principle as I've still got the game cheaper preowned with having to buy the elite code than had I bought it new with it included. Gggggerrrrrraaraaaaaghggghghghghgh!!!!!
End rant. Sort of. Feel a bit better now. Thank you Dakka.

Well pre-owned sales don't benefit the developers. It's just a way of encouraging people to buy new.

I understand that, I'm pissed off about them not advertising the fact clearly on the box though - no other games do it (though I know it's been talked about) so I had no need to assume that there'd be hidden costs.

I've never heard of any other game doing this, can you give examples? Ultimately I don't think it too much to ask for the manufacturer to state on their packaging that they've decided to charge people to play past a certain point if they buy preowned, instead of just adding on a hidden charge. It's THQ that has complete control of that; they make the decision, they design the game & packaging, they have to inform the retailer that this is the case, so why not just a spot of text or something on the case to say so? That's not too much to ask! Like I say, never heard of other games locking you out of content for buying preowned.

Indeed, given Homefront was THQ's big incursion into the FPS genre-- and it sold more than they expected regardless of the misleading things its critics often try to claim-- they'd probably do something similar for Space Marine.
Lo and behold... they did.

Where did you buy the game from?
In my experience Gamestation are pretty good at telling you that the code might have been used but I admit I can't remember if they've ever told me what the code is actually for.

Though it is both funny and amazing how people get up in arms about it sometimes. I mean sure, I'd love it if it were not the case, but that's just how it is. Pre-owned buyers are not the customer, and games developers have found a way to capitalise on that.
"What, if I buy a used book they'll come round and tear half the pages out?!"
"If I watch a preowned DVD it'll cut off before the ending?!"
That kind of thing.
Plus considering a month or two after release the game is often half the price (and in many cases I've seen the same price or -less- than a preowned copy (stupid GAME)), it's not that huge an issue to me.

Actually, IIRC Sony first party games like Resistance 3 and the upcoming Uncharted 3 now require you to buy a PSN pass to play multiplayer if you buy used. Also, the second largest publisher (EA) has an online pass that is needed to play at all in their sports games on both console platforms. THQ's version is a bit more lenient than those as it allows you to play as much as you want without paying extra as long as you don't mind progressing in ranks. Like it or not, its fast becoming the industry standard. Automatically Appended Next Post: MrDwhitey wrote:

That occasionally happens here when there is a sudden new sale price drop that catches Gamestop by surprise. I bought a game during a Christmas sale for $20 (it was normally $40 the week prior) and beat it within a week. Gamestop was having an extra 40% trade in value deal going on so I actually got more for the game than I paid with the two deals. That's obviously the exception rather than the rule, though.

So I read an interesting article in a PC-Gamer the other day (HAHA, Gaming journalism!), and it was saying that the F2P market may be the next best thing to happen to PC Gaming, due to the fact that it solves Piracy, Used Game Sales, and various other problems that gaming has had for a while. Thoughts on that? Or make it it's own thread?

Free to play has other problems it has to solve. LOTS of other problems... especially in the kind of bottom-feeding crowd it often attracts.

Free to Play is going to be a big thing, but won't ever take over "normal" game buying.
They do make a ton of money off micro transactions, but normally the game is fairly subpar with a few exceptions. Znyga from Mafia Wars fame realized this early on, simple numbers game has most likely netted them 100's of thousands in dollars.
I see digital copies of games becoming more and more common TBH. It's cheaper on the Devs not having hardcopies, allows them their crazy cheap sales that Steam is famous for, and with nearly everyone having highspeed internet normally means people get their games faster.
I haven't bought a physical copy of a game in months, and when I do it's normally just because I want the CE that has some nifty stuff with it, normally Fallout games.

I suppose a good argument to watch on this matter are the ones done by Jim Sterling in the Jimquisition, seen here (first 3 videos):
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/jimquisition
As for the multi, I'm getting far. HB is a godsend and the bolter is... handy with kraken bolts. Plasma gun is more "fire as fast as your fingers can mash a button" and that usually works. Meltagun as a shotgun = Win. Take that Assault Marines Oh and if you ever find a Lascannon-armed Marine in Hab Block sniping your face off at extreme range, it could be me I got both perks for that thing and haven't used them.
Lag is still an issue on PS3 but at least connecting aint a b!tch anymore since the last patch, where before I had to get my friend to connect and me join his party, which was temporamental thanks to PSN being a b!tch too Oh well, onwards I go to getting more armour. I find it amusing I got more Chaos armour than Imperial

Those are worst. Revenge kills are easy, and I keep playing as Chaos more than Imperial so I've got more kills as Chaos than Imperial. That and CC kills are rewarding.

I usually get one per game on average (sometimes none, other times 2). Just make sure you grab the B on the bridge and spend the game fighting there. Since its the game winning command post generally, alot of players devote their entire game to taking it back. Same goes for the middle command post (or grenade spam central as I like to call it) on the sewer level. The other tip is that people who fancy themselves devastator experts tend to camp the same spots regardless of their getting killed. If you see someone spamming plasma cannon shots onto the middle, it's likely that they'll spend the entire game doing that easy button noob move (the only thing that I think needs to be rebalanced in MP). Take an assault marine and say hello from a different direction.

I get grudge kills every now and then. I think its my play style really. I play REALLY aggressive and try to harass the other teams objectives as much as possible. Something Ive done with good success is when people are hammering on the middle objectives as mentioned before, Ill go and uncap their first objective. This works GREAT because most the team thinks "oh someone will spawn and retake it" so only a small few will actually leave the hard fighting to take the objective, and that nets me some good kills, not to mention to keeps their numbers down so my team can take objectives.
Good times, still waiting for the extermanatus though, havnt played in probably a week, been messing around on fallout NV again
