I have random tastes in Lego. These Star Trek minifigs were customs built by a girl who had a booth at a show we went to, the Gorn are just dinosaur suits from the random bags sold everywhere.

Lego had an intergral influence on the foundation of my adult life's mindset and way of being creative.
I already had my rainman approach to creativity back then. I never build something in 30min and then played with it. I spent weeks turning my imagination into models, that I kept around until they had to be recycled for the next project. I never used parts that didn't have the right colorscheme I had settled on for the project. When the parts didn't play along with my imagination, they had to be converted and so on.
And the most important cosmic rule I learned from my lego box is the daoistic understanding, that if you look for something too hard, you will not find it, but if you relax your mind and for a moment forget about what you were desperately looking for, you'll generally find it in no time.

my wife lays puzzles in that manner by the way how you described lego constructions...for me it was always careful sorting and storing that was the foundation of my built... i even had lists as a wee kid^^... insane mindtwist with a new twist^^

I buy some parts by the 10s or 100s at a time on bricklink, keeping them sorted is kind of a must. I have an idea for a modular city in my head, but I know I ned to slowly build up parts inventory to do so. I do it because it keeps me young at heart and mind.

a modular lego city??? mate... how cool can you get...^^ and buying lego in the 100s...ouch... but i envy you even more now^^... even when i was fully diving into my lego stuff...or better now make that my boys lego stuff^^, the we always had to cope with a sudden shortage of bricks one way or the other... argh.... it is a serious knot in everyones underwear when this happens...you see the completed model before your inner eye... and then you franticly search for half an hour for that one piece... as it happens... i am often quite untidy when it comes to certain things... but i have a great capacity for remembering where or how some things look and should be... i don´t need to much tidyness...but if under best conditions, then i have my bricks all sorted out....not having kids to mess up your order is a good start of course...^^ but i think my son felix is even more creative that his old man and keeps mixing all stuff together...so order is in his mindset something that happens to other peeps^^

You had lists? I never got those kids who wrote down how many parts they had... Why would one do that? I simply knew what I had...
But sorting was important for me too, that was why the other kids wanted to play anything but lego with me. Like I said I didn't "play" anyway, but I also made multiple piles of possible components, depending on color and to what element of the project they belonged, before I started building anything. That was my concept stage, when I tested how much of my idea would be possible to transfer into lego, taking into account the parts at my disposal. It could take days and for anybody who joined in it meant that all bricks that had the colors I meant to use, where reserved for me.

yup...back in my deay we only had the simple colored bricks...so i tried to build the things in a matching scheme too... but i think this is an easy mindset to be following... kind of a logic way to go to a solution builtwise...much more creative and problemsolving energy is needed whe doing it without boundaries of colors...it is how my sons are building... i think they don´t "see" the different colors... shape is more important to them...but after all the oldest is 5^^
well actually i ad lists of my playmobil parts... i tended to play in the sandbox with my cowboys...and always i kept on loosing stuff in the sand... never to be found again... so i started the listmaking...to be on the better informed side... not that it helped me that much...because a list is not something that keeps you from loosing stuff^^
