And the pullover sweater jokes begin. Make it stop!

I will take a look at this, just for fluff's sake even. Cool story and background just makes 40k that much more fun.

Man I haven't posted on Dakka in so long...

Anyway, I will counter Mellon in that I like the WFRP/40KRPG game system, always have. The system was not written by the Black Library, it was written by GW originally in 1986 with WFRP 1.0. It lasted until 2005 when v2.0 came out and cleaned up a few things. The 40KRPG games are based on the WFRP system. Black Industries took WFRP and made Dark Heresy and the core bits of Rogue Trader (prior to them getting dissolved). 40KRPG is the natural evolution of the WFRP system.

Mellon actually commented on what makes the system good: its very basic and easy to learn. A roleplay game shouldn't have a crap-ton of rules to worry about (aka: D20). The WFRP/40KRPG system is not flawless, but its fast and streamlined enough to make combat not take forever and yet still be fun and enjoyable. I will say though that it really shines when using miniatures. This was something that took a bit of getting used to for me as I always did abstract encounters w/ no figs. I am interested in the comment about combining your skill with your dice roll and if its over 100 then it is successful, I'll have to look into that.

I currently play Dark Heresy and am getting ready to play Rogue Trader. I am also in a playtest group for Deathwatch. As said in the thread I can't comment a lot on DW, but my group is enjoying it right now. This includes some first-time 40KRPG players and some vets.

My Opinions:
- If you do not like the 40KRPG system, then you likely won't enjoy Deathwatch either.
- If you do not like Space Marines, then you likely won't enjoy Deathwatch.

- If you DO like the 40KRPG system (or are system agnostic) and you like the idea of playing a Space Marine; then you will get your money worth out of this game easily.

My playtest group is enjoying the game, and I am enjoying running it. I will buy the book when it comes out and I already have a local group ready to go once this happens. In fact out of my local friends who play RPG's I had to actually not include everybody since the group would have been WAY too large.

Just remember, while they hate marines, they are probably painting Eldar to resemble Liberachi while slackly drooling out of their mouths. Or counting the number of buttons on their sweater for the 20th time while painting Tau in synergistic colourations - those are general statements, so hopefully doesn't fall foul of the Inquisition. Even though I am expecting it

No need to get frustrated - just imagine what will happen when the next marine release comes out

that's ridiculous. i own half a dozen sweaters and i've never painted my tau while wearing them. they don't even have buttons; they're pullovers!

This is great.

Basically, you are saying -

I am currently testing a chocolate beverage in bar format. I and my friends are really enjoying it, even to those first time bar enjoyers.

Basically, if you don't like chocolate, or do not like snack food in a bar format, this product is not for you.

But if you are an existing chocolate or bar fan, or indeed like chocolate bars then this is going to be fantastic. I can't actually tell you what it looks like or tastes like though.

Sarcasm aside, thanks for the update?

Pretty much.

Or you could have read it as: "We are enjoying it, despite the fact that it seems everybody wants to bitch and moan about the game before they have even played it yet. I can't however go into anymore details unfortunately."

The TLDR version: If you don't like Marines, this game won't appeal to you.

Oh man, why did they have to make this book about Space Marines?? I mean, a 40k RPG would be awesome if it was set in the Inquisition or as a member of a Rogue Trader's crew but Space Marines, gimme a break!

Sure it will. It's the only game where you get to kill them.

QFT! Man if they made a game about Rogue Traders or Inquisitors I'd buy that in a heartbeat! Even if I never played it I'd just want the fluff and artwork!

I really can't wait to bust out a Dark Angels Librarian. Maybe I'll have telekinetic powers and piss off the Space Wolves assault marine by randomly moving his stuff around behind his back.

No, you won't. Mainly because Space Wolves don't have assault marines.

You could do that to a Dark Angel and tell him it's the Keepers fault.

Sounds like you're ready to roleplay...

Get into it!

Though really, I don't picture Dark Angels as the 'have fun' kind of Chapter anymore.

Actually sounds like something a Rune Priest might do to a DA...

I must say, though I think everyone will want to play a Space Wolf, especially for the enhanced sight/smell/sound etc, I think I will avoid it. Especially as it feels like the roll playing would be kind of lame - roll a test, see something, growl, charge, get in everyones line of fire, chop things.

By the by, I know there was a Deathwatch short story a while back - I was thinking that the other chapter that could be included may even be the Raven Guard or Imperial Fists - especially if they take the idea of the Imperial Fists being the more heavy weapons based marines. Could totally be spacing it though.

Sadly, I don't think they'll be in there - as much as I wish they were!

You're close in the armor color though, I think!

And of course, we'll be able to "counts as" here as well...

Yes, I think that while we'll get actual Chapters, they'll serve quite well as archetypes. The 'Ultramarines' in the book will do for any Codex Chapter, Imp and Crimson Fists included, so don't worry about that.

And my DW army has a Space Wolf w/Jump Pack as part of my DW Assault Squad, and a regular Space Wolf w/Bolter as part of a regular DW Tac Squad, so we can RP either.

I wouldn't worry too much about Space Wolf characters being too overpowered, each Chapter will have its own cute little bonus to this and that, along with some interesting titbits to flesh things out.

Assault Marines are normal marines with Jump Packs. Blood Claws/Sky Claws are scout level marines. You'd never get one like that in Deathwatch.

Who's to say you wouldn't? Blood Claws/Sky Claws aren't "just" Scout level Marines.

"Assault Marine" in Deathwatch just means a marine more dedicated to getting close and stabbing. I think Space Wolves would probably gravitate most to that position.

Not all Assault Marines wear jump-packs. Some ride bikes. Some ride in Rhinos or Razorbacks.

Jump Packs are available to Wolf Guard and HQ choices as well. The role of Jump Infantry is normally given to Blood Claws, but can also be used by seasoned vets.

Totally off topic, but Goto fixed up most of the changing vehicle issues in the omnibus. Sad times.

"Goto" didn't fix them, the editors finally did.

As far as I've seen, Goto's no longer working for BL.

WHAT?!?

BL now has EDITORS that actually DO something?

This is News for sure!

Though until proven, it is just a rumor...

Like the one about GW and playtesters...

As far as I'm aware, the whole "active editors" thing is a result of the fact that the authors now also submit their drafts to outside publishing companies in addition to BL itself.
