In 40K, it was Orks, and it all had to do with someone linking me to the 1d4chan page about them. I was laughing so much that I had to get the codex, and when I read through it and realized that pretty much everything on the website was just par for the course, I had to get some. Once I got the models and really started getting into the hobby, I realized that not only are they great fluff-wise and on the table, but they've easily got the best conversion opportunities out of any army, and that's a HUGE draw for me. Literally anything can be turned into a unit for the Orks.

For my Lizardmen in Fantasy, it was the hoopla surrounding 8th edition. I was curious about getting into it, and started browsing through the army books, when suddenly: Dinosaurs. Aztec dinosaurs. Lead by Hypnotoads. Wielding intense weaponry. RIDING MORE DINOSAURS. That's all I needed to know.

Certainly helped that when I started reading more about them online I realized that not only had I picked a great-looking army, but a very good army to play with.

Ouze on GW: "I'd like to be like, hey baby, you're a freak but you just got too much crazy going on, and I don't hook up with bunny boilers. But then Necrons are going to come out, and I'm going to be like damn girl, and then next thing you know, it's angry sex time again.

It's complicated."

raven guard because the models are good, the fluff is good, it's not ultrasmirf cheese, they're easy to paint, and the codex is good and varied.
orks because I like konvertin'.
GK because the models are the best and I like the fluff.
'nids because I wanted an opponent to test my marines and I like genestealers and carnifexes.
heresy-era raven guard because the models are better, the fluff's better, it's not ultrasmirf cheese, they're easy to paint, and the codex is good. (C:BA)

Well I had waffled about which army I wanted, but then the Hobby Craft had only Dark Eldar troop choices. It was like it picked for me! And once I started to get to know the DE alittle bit better...

Defaulted to the Guard because one of my friends wanted to start an Ork army at the same time and I didn't see the point in both of us playing the same thing. In the long run I think IG was the better choice.

When i first started 40k, i first wanted to go with tau, buy Assault on Black Reach to get used to the game and start a tau army. But when i painted my first space marine red, and looked at various SM chapters and saw the blood angels, i immediately thought of going with the BA colour scheme. I read into their background, their playing style and all thoughts of playing tau were forgotten.

I chose SM beacause they are cool. But now that I have matured( just a little ) I like GK because they are un-emotional engines of death (BUT GW NEEDS TO MAKE THEM PLASTIC AND ABLE TO WORK ON THIER OWN!!!!!!)

Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward. Whoever cannot take care of himself without that law is both. For a wounded man shall say to his assailant, "If I Die, You are forgiven. If I Live, I will kill you." Such is the Rule of Honor.

I chose Tau due to misinformation... kind of.

I wanted to play gunline Tau, and when I started them I thought that not only could Tau trump any other army in a shoot-off, I thought that they could get rid of the enemy before they reached Tau lines...

Bleh, I was young and stupid. I still like Tau because of the crisis suits... hopefully they will become completely OP in the new codex.

I think the main problem is the out dated codex and the fact that all the models are metal and direct order only.

It really puts people off.

Hopefully a new plastic revamp is on the way,I mean look at Dark Eldar and Grey Knights.

I picked other, and also i picked Tyranid as my starting army. I wanted an army whose Codex wa not to confusing, that had a more basic play style, and some simple painting techniques. All good things to get a basis of as a new player/modeler.
My next army will be Blood Angels. because i want a sharper style to paint, and my play style has evolved from nids, so CC it is

I chose backround, but my main reason for playing orks was because I wanted to play an army with bad guys and lots of them. And nids just didn't really appeal to me. But I'm going for a totally different aspect with my planned grey knights. The goodest good guys, and I plan on playing paladin wing, so deffinately not that many of them.

I chose IG of all reasons cos my b/f ran a Rogue Trader game where I was playing the archmilitant. I'd made her ex-penal legionnaire so researched the Guard a bit and read a couple of the novels and slowly but surely fell head of heels in love with the Guard from there.

I remember hearing about this hobby, and going online to check out the various types. My favorite was the sci-fi, and the top two armies I was looking at (this was still the old red bordered website) were chaos space marines and regular marines, because I really liked the idea of heavy armor, and being able to take a beating while still dishing it out. I had yet to talk with any 40k players, and I didn't even know that marines were the most common. I just liked the idea of a few models, with lots of power and durability. Then I went to the store and found out they were in the starter box! I picked up a few random on-sale boxes (a 5 man squad, a land speeder, and an attack bike), and that started my army!

I chose other, pretty much I was hooked after watching some friends play a few times and I decided to hop in. The only two armies that none of them had fielded yet were Necrons and Eldar. Since I didn't want to have the same army as anyone else, and to be honest I think Eldar look like "happy" clowns. I chose Necrons, and am more or less satisfied with the choice. I am however building an IG anda Tau army on the side.

Gods? There are no gods. Merely existences, obstacles to overcome.

I play Spess Mehrines for a few reasons, they're simple to paint to a basic standard, the vanilla codex is pretty handy, you can use the same models with another codex (i'm thinking about getting the sw codex, but if like it i will stick with it for a while... no flip flopping between the two cos thats a bit tfg for me!) and they have masses of good fluff.

It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and erase all doubt.

Took me years to decide what army I wanted to play, so i honestly stopped looking. Then my friend was like "Hey Space Wolves are getting their own codex and new models."

I read up about them and was like space vikings & werwolves!? my two favorite things! and I invested too much money in them and still pumping more money into conversions and building things for my space wolves battalion.
