Iron Warriors.
I choose them cause it was my first army, and I wanted something not to complicated to paint, since I had never painted mini's before, and it had to be chaos, cause I love the background, characters and well....CHAOS!!

IG because of military background, conversions, and they are just fun to model.

And a side note.....I support all you ork players out there, gotta love the greens

Amongst my reasons for becoming a Tyranid collector was as a characterful 'adversary' force for my Smurfs, which I'd converted to have Cassius some ten years before he got a model.

Orks, partly because of the ability to mod the heck out of them, partly because of the fact that with said modeling and scratchbuilding, they're the cheapest army to get in some ways, but mostly 'cause of their fluff.

I have a few reasons for my Knights of Blood.

1) I find them interesting in both color scheme and background.

2)Their convenient for me as I already have a huge stock of SM parts and bodies from the years to work with.

3)They seem to be a challenge as there has been no real development on them aside from the text in Codex: Blood Angels.

I began Dark Elves because they have far and away the coolest fluff and general feel in WHFB IMHO. I also fell in love with the artwork on the front of the Spearmen box and I love the Malus Darkblade books. Sure, they happen to be one of the best armies in WHFB atm, but that's only a nice bonus, it didn't make the decision.

'nids because me and my cousins were all starting armies at the same time so between us it was decided to have tau, chaos space marines and nids and both the others had already baught sets, also im natrually attracted to horde armies in 40k, but not in fantasy for some reason.

Crons b/c i cannot play an army that has a vast array of options (i take too many)

Sisters b/c women space marine kick ass

Chaos b/c thats what i started with

GK b/c i do not like the new sisters and i want an inquisition army

Well, I choosed IG because I was tired of marines and then that many IG-armys (including GW's own...) wasn't reaaly suited for any terrain.

Example: Cadian 8th. No logic in having green armour and then beige uniforms... They're just targets then.

Convienence...me and a buddy were buying the starter set with Templar and Dark Eldar. He paid more so he got to pick first. Thus he chose the templar...and I lost games for about a year.

I originally chose Space Marines after playing Dawn of War 2 and liking the background presented there. After messing around in the army painter, I found Angels Sanguine and loved the model, did some research, and found out that they were from the Blood Angels line, so I switched to Blood Angels.

DE Reavers. Thought they were beautiful. Ironically I haven't bought any yet.

Well, I picked conversion opportunities. I play Orks because I love just about everything about 40k, and really want to play, but I'm poor. Seriously, I barely make enough each month for rent and bills, let alone food or gas. So spending a lot of money on minis is right out. That's where Orks come in. They allow me to beg/borrow/steal/scrap/generally loot all the bits I need to run a full army.

EDIT: I forgot, I'm also collecting, rather casually I might add, a WFB Lizardmen army. I have to vote aesthetics of the models here because, well, Aztec Dinosaurs. Also, Steggies and Carnosaurs are less then $5 a piece.

I collect mainly FW moddels, witht he exception of my LOTR and WHFB armies, so it really kicked of when I got three squads of Deathkrops of krieg and a Leman russ from FW as a presant years ago. Never looked back since that

I was brain washed into buying tau when I started. Now im stuck until they get an update.

Honestly? I picked IG because of two reasons. Tanks, and because us humies is expendable.

My first army was for WHFB, and was Dark Elves because I like Elves, but didn't want to be goody-two shoes elves. Also wanted an evil army, but a more sophisticated evil: anyone can kill, but playing with one's prey until they beg you to kill them, now that's evil!

My first (and to date only) 40k army is Blood Angels, which was chosen out of convience. The friend who I started in WHFB gave me some surplus SM stuff, so I simply read assorted SM fluff and chose the Blood Angels. Part of it was the HtH orientation: at the time I was playing various games where my troops/ships/mechs were long-range snipers, and I needed a change.

However, if I had started 40k on my own I was going to go with IG. My original plan was Valhallans (this was late 90's so the figs were still in production) and going to paint them up as WWII Soviet Red Army. Would have bought the appropriate Osprey books for reference and modeling ideas. Also wanted to find reproductions of Soviet propaganda posters to scan and shrink to place on ruined buildings. So this would have been aesthetics and background, if I followed through.

Then the Praetorians came out, and that was it for the Valhallans. The Praetorians are strictly on looks. Do not have enough to actually field, although I have enough HW crews for a standard 2000pt IG codex army for 3rd ed. Since it's too pricey to get official figs, if I do build them I'll just use Wargames Factory plastics and do conversions. It woudl be cool to have greenjackets as my snipers and the Natal Mounted Volunteers as Roughriders. Not GW store or tournament legal, but oh well.

Just bought into Malifaux though, so no 2nd 40k army right now. Picked the Ramos and Rasputina crews of the Arcanists based on looks. Saw Ramos and his clockwork automatons first, and thought "Steampunk gizmos! That's my crew! (One has Crews in Malifaux, not gangs or armies). Then I saw the Rasputina figure and decided I had to have her. That's somewhat better than what I can do, but I will try. (May buy a second and get a pro to paint her.) So once again, it's the looks that sold me.

General asthetics.

Always wanted (and have just started) to do an Eldar army The reason i have just started (2 other armies down the line) is i wanted to get my painting to a level to do the models justice, best looking army in 40k IMHO.

Fire Power!

I started 40k last year, and I started with Necrons because I liked the army special rules, and because I think the minitures looked good

Other. I already had some Marines from Macragge, so thought "Why the hell not?"

I chose "Other". Reasoning... well... I had just gotten home from AIT and wanted to get back into 40k. Had a couple friends put in their opinions as to what I should start playing and it came down to Wolves and BA. Well.. I went with BA since there was so much hype surrounding the release of the codex. (thats right... the codex was not even out) Well... I chose BA and pretty much regret the descision. I liked em at first and LOVE Furioso Dreads BUT... I think I am the only person who can no win with them. Doesnt matter what I do... I just can not win with them. Therefor... I will be making a new army... soon ))

I love Dkok, one for their ww1 look and feel, and secondly for their backround. I mean, who else could nuke their own planet for days then be happy living underground and be more awesome for it?????

Love Skaven because of their sneaky backround and their easy -to-paint-ness, pluss they look awesome, even if painted quickly ^^

The main theme for my armies is Xenos. Imperial might have all the best toys but to a certain they also have the closest thing to an "easy button".

Thus far I've got an army from most of the "underdog" Codices, namely, Tau, Necrons and Nids but I'm still enjoying the game mostly because of that challenge. Beating Mech IG with Nids is an uphill battle but so worth it just for the opponent's puzzled look at the end. Still working on a counter to Vostroyan vet spam Mech IG with my Dark Eldar... All things in due time I guess.

Orks, for many reasons, mainly, they are awesome.

And Ogres, for the same reasons.
