I started Orks because I love the look and feel of the models, along with fun rules and great conversion opportunities.

I started sm because my brother gave me his army.It was in a trash bag filled with goat poop and straw, and it had been sitting in our barn for 5 years. Most of the terminators and space marines survived but the land raider, rhinos, vindicator, predator, bikes and speeders were all smashed and i could only find a few peices of most of them.

I started with space marines because their aesthetic is what lured me into 40k. I also selected "other" for the background of the army, which is a selection that seems to be missing. I will also start a Tau army soon because I like their background and the models.

i picked orc and goblins because of the animosity rule. it makes them unpredictable

I started with Necrons and found them Boring

Orks win or lose or fun to play

IG because of being in the military and at the time no one in my area played them.

i picked the general background, because i really like the background of Dark Angels, although i also like the aesthetics of the models

All about the conversion oportunities for me, so originally the armies I played had a large selection of plastic kits which I could do a lot with. Also, I must be fun to paint because I simply cannot paint stuff that I hate the look of.

Other.

I got into IG because of a particularly traumatic incident involving crisis suits back when I was an eldar player. I wanted something that was able to kill units behind cover, and I heard of the basilisk...

When I eventually got back into 40k, I picked guard, and a basilisk was my first purchase after a box of troops.

Tau love the story...reminds me of avatar or something..easy to paint and fun, and now doing space marines..not so fun to paint..but i love the models

I picked the Black Templars because of their background and especially after Helsreach fleshed them out some more.

Orkz, because my brother took the SM of the AOBR.

How Jervis can say they (GW) did this race a disservice is beyond me. (to me) The above is plenty to inspire a theme for the force.

Convenience. I would have been interested in any of the Imperial forces, Necrons, Orks, Tau, or even some Chaos factions. I just happened to get offered a sweet deal on a Space Marine army.

Orks. The most fun race, win or lose.

My main army is Death Guard,I love the conversion opportunities,the flavor of the army and I love the whole idea of dragging the mighty and pure into the filth.

My secondary army are Orkz...and well,I just love everything about orkz.

I'm just getting started and just about everyone that plays at the local hobby store plays SM's so I thought I'd go with Orks to stir up some trouble.

I liked the look and background to the Khador forces.

Convenience. I got AoBR to try out the hobby and I became hooked. I liked the two armies, so I expanded them both. It was a stroke of pure luck that the two armies that came with the set are both armies I like. If the box came with Eldar and Necrons, I'd have ~1000 points of models I'd never use, and ~1000 points fewer Orks and SM.

Witch Hunters.

Awesome models, awesome artwork in the Codex, great background, and really really fun to play

Warriors Of Chaos because of their codex, and their ability to wipe the floor with just about any army. Oh and for their great models

General background and i just liked the idea of battlesuit/mecha style stuff

I chose "ease of modelling" but i also chose them because of "good model support". Orks are so much easier to model/convert than necrons

General aesthetics of the models.

I won't field an army of "ugly" models - so I'll never play tyranids, chaos or DE (in their current range).

Power level of the army is irrelevant - I play DH (no allies and never have), so it's not about the winning.

I find one of the biggest draws to me is playstyle: How does an army function on the tabletop, what are its specific strengths and weaknesses? I try to choose armies that will play differently than the ones I have or than the more common ones in my group (mostly a Fantasy player though, so more radical differences).

Aside from this, the minis make a huge impact. I wouldn't collect an army I couldn't stand the look of, or one that I would never be able to customize to some extent.

I go by fluff then see if the army fits into my playstyle.

Currently I'm building up a Space Wolves force but only because I have been given a sh*tload of SW sprues and marine minis

I play DA as I was given half an army and the codex so it seemed the easiest option

Love skimpery brittle evil little laughing basgrabs of dark eldar, and it was handy getting the space marines given to me at a tiny price, but I quickly grew to love theyre mighty awesomeness aswell, and they are my main army now.
