Picked my guard because:

1) Fun to paint

2) Real World Inspiration ( Yes I am one of those Military folk)

3) Army Background... I like the idea of the guard more then SM.

and 4) None of my friends have IG, and its relatively rare to see it outside of mega battles at my local GW.

Empire in WHFB. IG in 40k.

That's because they're the most "human" of all factions. I always root for humans in any scifi or fantasy game. I always for example, choose human as my race in MMORPGs and the like and cheer on for the humans even if they're the evil ones in the story.

I chose my army (eldar) because they appealed to me in how they played on the battlefield. I really like an army that is hard to play, but unstoppable if played right.

I chose guard because painting actual humans seemed like a really nice alternative to yet more power armour. Experimenting with flesh colours is always fun
Plus, they're fun to convert

: The Space Marines were the first models i ever bought and learnt to paint on, i left warhammer for about 1 1/2 years and came back to it once i saw some black templars on display outside a local GW. I was attracted to the Black Templar's mainly for the background and the look and feel of the models. They are very Gothic but are not chaos and best resemble Knights of the Crusades in Jerusalem.

The Space wolves where my next step. Given that they wore power armor smiler to what i was use to is what drew my attention for my second army. I wasn't looking for a bright, or plain looking force i was looking for something that stood out, was different but familiar and thats where the Space wolves stood. I have always like the Celtic look of the Wolves and their wolf like nature was deferent and very interesting to learn about.

My Elysian Droop troops are really just a side project, Something fun to keep me from getting to buried into SM. I am Fascinated with WW2 and with the Airborne Soldiers that fought during the war. I guess that is where my fondness for them comes from.

Plus, I told my husband I would only play a minis game if I could play a Dwarven race... so he's playing WHF just for me!

I like big, modular mechs and I like a futuristic combat look. I also like the concept of 2m tall aliens similar to the Naa'Vi of Avatar. I like big hover tanks with huge engines.
I also belive in ranged weapons and not in randomly charging into a rule-ridden assault phase. I belive in camouflage as well. I like pissing my opponents off with an average of S5. I like nice color scemes and I like fun, special tactics I can apply to stay out of CQB.

Warriors of Chaos model line, need I say more?

I was attracted by both the Eldar tactica and their fluff. The fluff and pure unredeemable evil of Khorne drew me to the Brass Apocolypse.

Waaaaagh!

Combination of background and models.

I mean the old Space Wolves codex had a screaming ginger guy with a massive axe on the front, whats not to love?

As for my Witch Hunters, well I always loved the idea of the old school mob in films so a well equipped version of them seemed the way to go.

The pure fun of them they just like kids on Red Bull... with gunz... and homicidal tendencies... hmmm, then again maybe not so much like kids

I chose mine because of a mixture of background and asthetics. mainly background though so voted that.

Each of my armies drew me in with the culture and background. Orks were just fun. No anger, no hatred, just pure whoopin' and hollerin' dakka dakka go fasta attitude and completely oblivious to tomorrow or getting blown up or crushed or thinking about why trying to jump a bike off the top of a Gargant is a bad idea.

Chaos was the personification of pure anger and hatred. Omnipotent and omnipresent, the simplicity of this common thread was beautiful. They hate the Imperium. They hate the Xenos. Depending on the chapter they even hate themselves. Winning against Imperial forces is the most satisfying feeling when I play Chaos.

And finally my Genestealer Cult. Apparently not popular enough to make money for GW it into the newer editions as a supported army, my memories go back to 2nd ed. Very rich in background and purpose, the most versatile army I ever played, and easily the most devastating. The convoluted machinations of the Magus and Patriarch manipulating the local population, corrupting each generation and bending them to their will, completely unaware that they were merely pawns of the Hive Mind.

I've played other armies but those are the three that I'll always go back to.

It was mostly to tick off a friend of mine who started when I did. He plays SM and I play CSM.
Now that I look back I think that if I knew more about the 'fluff' I would still pick Chaos, love their background, the conversion possibilities and love how they look in general. That and rebelling against The False Emperor that brainwashes everyone is just alot of fun!

I voted General Background Army and Aesthetic of the Minis. I just love everything that is Ork. Their fluff is hilarious and the models are mostly really good-looking. I hardly know anything about the "general fluff" of thte 40K world but from what I've heard from my friends (who are lore geeks) the Orks seem to be the funniest race. I love my Orkses <3

orks because of the background, painting oppurtunities, and a whole bunch of my space marine playing friends had just bought AoRB so i bought all of thier orks for super cheap.

Necrons, but only after having tried space marines (blood angels and Daemonhunters). The idea of an army that can keep getting shot down, and then come right back up pleases me. Normally in games I play the "good" characters, but the Necrons work for me.

My chouse is SM because there my first 40k army there esey to paint and ki love the background

Because it was the first army that cought my attention all those years ago when I first became a fan of 40k. I love the blood Angels and think their also aesthetically pleasing since they are one of the most ostentatious chapters around!

I chose Guard, for the most part, because they were Human. True Human, unlike the Astartes.

I chose Tyranids because they're giant dinosaur bugs that looked really, really awesome. I also liked that they don't have all the bothersome political and philosophical issues that non-Ork 40k species tend to have. They feed. The end. And they ate the Squats.

I chose Dark Elves due to general background and aesthetics of the newer models. They have ninjas, pirates, dinosaurs, half-naked women, dragons, manticores, and hydras. How much more awesome can they get?

I chose the Dark Eldar because of their maneuverability, and back when they were way out of date there was little to no whining if they won. Amassing hordes of zombies (grotesques) to make marines run like little girls is also fun.

I picked orks conversion time!

I have too many to consider one my "main" army.... if only i was as good at painting as i am at spending money... sigh....
