Lady Gaga is pretty good. She's a bright spot on the otherwise intolerable Top 20. I wouldn't go to a show though it looked like you had fun, OP.

Her music > Madonna, by the way.

I just have to share this gem of pop genius.... circa 1980... It's like one chick who can actually sing, 2 other girls there to look pretty, and a dude who is more or less just the stage show... They were from Haiti or Jamaica or one of those kind of places, and supposedly didn't even understand half the words they were singing. I think it just rocks though... I groove my ass off every time I see this, and laugh my ass off too. Truly one of the lost greats of pop music.

So, I was in this place people call the mall a while back. And I had the urge to expel some bad spirits. SO I'm sitting at my computer right, and I have a Coke, Bottled mind you. But it got warm, so I got a Coffie cup and I filled it with the coke and some Ice and I sipped as I did my internet stuff. I'm sorry, I would rather drag my sack across a mile of broken, salted glass than go to her concert. I would rather have my Dad find me in a homosexual embrace than let a Lady GaGa cd into my house.

However, the image of a fire crotch is some thing I have not seen in my many worldly travels. Still, not an image worth sinking my soul into the depths of the Top 20 hell.

QUICK! Someone get me a Cd of Lady Gaga and a Tux to pose as James Bond.....I'll have this CD in his house in no time....But thats pretty drastic to drag your sack across a mile of salted broken glass.....also very foolish.

Whilst I dislike Lady Gaga pretty intensely, I can see how going to one of her gigs might be pretty cool, show-wise. I mean, I got dragged along to see Scissor Sisters by my missus, and it turned out to be one of the best gigs I've ever seen. Never underestimate the power of 'The Show'.

Her music's gash, though.

Also, $80 isn't a lot for gig tickets. That's pretty reasonable.

I don't listen to Lady Gaga, but I have great respect for her. I recognize that she writes all of her own music (which is extremely rare in the pop industry), that she's not completely mindless, and that she does whatever the feth she wants. In other words, she's definitely a step in the right direction.

However, I generally only concern myself with absolute virtuosity. I'm not pretentious enough to believe that I am the deciding factor on musical talent, but music definitely exists on a sort of ambivalent scale. Lady Gaga is nowhere near the top of that scale. Listening to repetitive, overused hooks and lyric-centric music just isn't my thing.

Also, $85 for a ticket is absolutely ridiculous. I'm used to going to shows that are $50 or so for 30+ bands. I guess there are legitimate reasons why you shouldn't listen to pop music.

Somebody mentioned NIN earlier, and I have to agree... Best show I've ever been to.

85$ for the seats you had is freaking cheap. I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. What sounds like the most fun is the "after party" that didn't happen. Nothing like the free for all atmosphere at a bar after a good show that everybody enjoyed.

I have to say that as a straight man with a huge variety of musical tastes I am a Gaga fan. And to the slightly homophobic posters out there let me just ask:
Have you ever seen a fairy fight? Those guys can kick ass. I've watched my gay friends get into scraps, and they open the hurt on fools like I wish I could. One of my buddies put a guys face into the side of a building the other night, and this friend of mine also happens to love the cock.
While fighting is a stone-age example of masculinity, let me say that there are many would-be gay bashers who have come to regret messing with the fags in northern California.
Back to the OP, I'm glad you had fun since that's what it's all about. I know I'd go just to see the performance and all of the work put into stage props and costumes and such.

I saw NIN at Lolla #1 and it was really bad. He didn't have a band yet, it was just a sequencer loop in the background and Trent pacing back and forth going through pre-programmed songs. I'm so glad he wised up and got some actual live rockers to play with him, if not for the feel, at least for the stage presence.

A friend of mine went on tour with that guy for a bit back during the 'downward spiral' years and had to quit because he was getting sick of Trent swinging his mic around and whacking him on the back with it during the 'breakdown' parts of the song while Trent threw his tantrum. I saw the bruises. He quit the tour and went on to do another band Filter. Trent used to play with all the guys from the Chicago industral scene too until he got kicked out of every band for being a tantrum-throwing prick... Ministry, KMFDM, Pigface... list goes for miles of bands who just couldn't deal with the guy so booted him out. Good thing they did because if not, NIN wouldn't exist and we wouldnt have ever got that awesome Cash cover of 'Hurt'. I like NIN but I would not want to party with Trent I don't like being randomly bludgeoned.

Um... some doofus with a funny bandana?

Probably some industry assigned session musicians I would guess. Maybe they caught on that the stage show sucked early in the tour and made an attempt to remedy that. That wasn't the one I was at though. The sound on that video is horrible and doesn't really do the project justice at all. NIN is, just like miss Gaga... intended to be some hi-fi audiophile stuff, not a badly recorded garage band from a camcorder... okay so he got himself a band later in the tour... prove me wrong if that's what you needed to do, still, that stage show wasn't exactly anything I would call impressive.

doesn't that depend on how you define 'pop'... if it hits the top 20 its 'pop'... ten million fireflies is a lot more interesting but I doubt if that basket case nerdy guy goes on tour much... toss in pre-arranged punk bands, one-republic's "all the right friends", "let it go, this too will pass" or whatever that song is called with the marching band stuff... all of this is far better 'Pop' music in my opinion, they just dont throw the over-the-top fashion show live. Maybe i'm being misogynistic but those bands full of dudes playing catchy tunes on their own instruments beat the hell out of a synchronized dance squad with sparkley bras.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Lady Gaga and the rest of the chick celeb 'musicians' really have to go all the way to get attention. Stripping down to duct tape in one recent video and generally competeing with the other skanks on who can get the lowest act sale.
The trouble is they are amateurs in this as in other things.
Not only could they sing back in the 80's and 90's they could outskank 'em too while still keeping some of their clothes on and without wearing telephone hairdos. Listen and learn biatches, this is how its done:

I'm just going to come out and say it... CHICKS DON'T ROCK... They are obsessed with appearances and outfits and such and never really learned how to play an instrument well like a dude who has to to make up for the fact that he isn't 'hot'. It isn't their fault, as it is a social expectation. Nobody goes to a Melvins show because the singer is hot, or a Metallica show... They just have to know how to play damn well enough to wow people without resorting to appearances. Women are driven by appearance while men are driven by, in the words of Napoleon Dynamite, "need skills". Now I suppose that there is skill involved with a well planned fashion show with a pre-programmed generic musical background and a cheesy dance routine, but really... the skill is in the marketing. She sells chickness to chicks (look at the spice girls "Girl Power", were they producing their cheesy dance noise? no! a guy was doing the work while they were busy making sure they looked pretty) That is why Chicks dont rock. Oleanthe? any high school guitarist taking lessons at a music store could play her guitar solo.

When I see a fat ugly bitch actually play a pop song instead of a barbie doll, and get mass attention for it, then I will respect womens input in the music scene. Well.. there was Wilson-Phillips (aka: a redhead, a hot blonde, and the fat chick who got no camera time in the videos) THEN maybe I will start thinking that maybe they are good at something other than being little slutty visual icons... but isn't that the point? That's why gaga is cool... because her producers knew exactly what they were doing when they cast their little diva in the part they needed to sell more pop. There is, I believe, power behind the throne though. More than likely a bunch of old beardy guys laughing their asses off.

actually... sorry to say it... but every single one of them was just icing on the cake of the musicians and producers behind them (maybe not Joni Mitchell... Bjork makes me sick with her catchy trendy wierdness and complete obliviousness to what goes into her backing tracks. Look at the liner notes on her first album. The only credit that goes to her is partial credit on the lyrics... oooh how deep!

I'll grant that there are a few chicks that are actually movers and shakers of the music industry, but they are generally overshadowed by the guy who is getting gak done.

C&C Music Factory cast a hot chick in their vid in place of the fat chick that actually sang the track. Milli Vanilli lip synced all their stuff, got caught, and promptly crashed and burned... as did ashley simpson, who suffered a massive fail on her SNL appearance... oops... wrong song to lip sync to... sounded like a dying goat.

A lot of these type of 'artists' are gigantic business operations, not really musicians, just amalgamations of all that goes into the creation of "pop" music; Which, as I just said, is usually a bunch of beardys in a conference room discussing gak like 'image' and 'market' and so on, supported by talented musicians to make the actual tracks and talented producers to figure out the 4/4/4/4 combo that works. I dont give a flying gak what the lyrics are ("my milkshake brings all the boys to the yard") they just have to follow catchy formula like the obedient slaves they are... which is what makes it a work of art, in a kind of disgusting way, but art of a kind nonetheless.

I think she is a faerie princess from the magical Land of Ice who's faerie magickal lyrics hold deep meaning from the olde gods... or something... oh yeah, plus a drum beat.

Actually, I think she is a tiny little wierdo whos toes are just tiny enough that (if we're lucky) could possibly get stuck in an escalator right next to the cast of Lillith Fair (which singlehandedly lowered the stock value of pink bic razors during its amazing two year run as a festival) Sorry but I've seen it many times... dudes get studio stuff done while chicks dance in the camera and look pretty. In the pop world, dancing in the camera and looking pretty is just as much a part of getting stuff done as knowing how to actually program the beats and synths and such though. Hence, she is good at her job.

Are we still talking about Bjork? Sorry, but that is WAY off. It doesn't matter how the music is made, just that it is, and some of her stuff is jaw-dropping in it's sonic complexity. Have you heard 'Vespertine'? It's ten times more creative and experimental than any number of 'moody boys-with-guitars'-type bands. Seriously, done to death. Her music is brimming with creativity and vitality - it sounds like the future. All I care about is the end product, I have no interest in some worthy concept of 'realness'. I leave that to the kids.

The whole fixation with 'manufactured=BAD' is a load of old nonsense. Some of the most important artists of all time have been 'manufactured'. It's a poor argument for disliking a musician.

actually... sorry to say it... but every single one of them was just icing on the cake of the musicians and producers behind them

You SHOULD be sorry to say it, not least because it's breath-takingly ignorant and inaccurate.
Carole King was a firmly established Brill Building songwriter with a career stretching way back into the '60s, Aretha is widely considered to be one of the greatest vocalists of all time... etc, etc... Oh, what's the point?

maybe not Joni Mitchell... Bjork makes me sick with her catchy trendy wierdness...

Yeah, 'meat-and-potatoes' rock'n'roll has still got so much to offer - let's just keep re-hashing it forever...

...and complete obliviousness to what goes into her backing tracks. Look at the liner notes on her first album. The only credit that goes to her is partial credit on the lyrics... oooh how deep!

Look at the liner notes on the first Beatles album. What's your point? That she doesn't auteur the whole project? Does anyone? Her work is collaborative - that's a large part of being a solo artist. Scott Walker doesn't write every single note on his albums - he didn't even write that many of the songs on his earlier ones. The fact is, I don't care if her early albums weren't all her own work - they still sound interesting, which is more than can be said for most of today's generic guitar-bands. Saying she's oblivious to what goes into her music is asinine, particularly when you consider that she co-produces it.

Plus, her voice is awesome.

I almost always agree with Albatross, I can't see why anyone wouldn't.

Okay, so the male version of "Cougar" is now officially "Albatross".
