Meh. I don't care for the music but I don't have to be the muso I am to know she's damn good at what she does. Obviously some people are paid a lot of money to come up with a lot of content for these shows. The juggler doesn't build the circus tent himself. But whatever-the-hell-her-real-name-is writes her own music and that's good enough for me.
Keep music live. If you're into shows, then tv will never do it for you.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

I'm by no means a fan of Gaga but before others start pointing, best not to go down the road of comparing lyrical quality. Almost every band/artiste has something in their oeuvre that makes ones toes curl.

'tis true. She took the show into the negative by doing a 3rd redesign of the entire thing on the same tour. She makes jokes about being homeless because it's technically true
DutchKillsRambo wrote:I understand what your saying, but then where does the line between art and emotion fall? Is it art simply becuase it evokes an emotion? Or is it simple entertainment? The two are not mutually exclusive mind, but thats another topic.
The type of art varies. If one listens to classical music, you can compare on paper which is technically more complex. When one listens to techno, it's hard to objectively argue whose got the phatter beats. Likewise, some will hear the classical and say it's laced with emotion in all of it's intricacies while others will say it's incredibly calculated, cold and emotionless. Especially when you bring pop art into the picture it becomes ridiculously more subjective as it pokes at societal themes which may or may not even relate to you.
DutchKillsRambo wrote:Pop music makes so much money because, well its popular. Its catchy songs bereft of deeper meaning that people can enjoy without having to think about them too much. Shes a good artist because she's smart and knows what her fans want. Shes not a good artist because of the complexity of her art.
Its totally fine to enjoy a nice meal from Applebee's. Its good food. But don't try and tell me its fine dining.
As an example, The Fame Monster is about her fears. A first glance of the lyrics won't tell you this. Telephone is a song about a girl at a club who keeps getting calls. One the next level it's about someone who has something trying to imprison them or hold them back from what they're trying to achieve. On it's true level it's about Gaga herself, dealing with her frequent insomnia caused by her mind never stopping. Even when she's out with friends, she'll need to grab a napkin and write down an idea and can't wait to get back to the studio to record something and see if it goes somewhere. She's a workaholic as much evidenced and that's her way of trying to put it out there and deal. The fans know this because we spend time to look into stuff, not that anyone has to or is a better person for doing it The video takes some of these same themes by bombarding you with imagery you can't ignore that seems really unusual; too-bright colors, lesbians, the American diet and consumerism all get shoved in your face at rapid speed interspersed with "typical" Gaga-isms. You can't ignore a phone when it's ringing and you can't ignore the themes in the video. There's tons more where that came from

Ahhhh guilty pleasure... I'm not about to say she is an artistic genius, but she does definitely have a knack for going over the top and making that 'acceptable' as an image. Besides, catchy hooks and a HELL of a thumping bass if you put it through the right speakers... what's not to like?
The lyrics are either sarcastic or just dumb but really that isn't the point. It's all about a chorus and a thumping bass. Remember Roxette? Ace of Bass? Madonna? the list gets longer every couple of years since the invention of the drum machine. She's carrying the torch until she burns out like all the rest did before her. You go girl! Carry the torch till you burn out!

She's focusing on the fans too. There's a community that will be around for a time to come, even after the inevitable drop in fame I think KISS is the most accurate comparison there. I'm glad to hear that. People need to be less pretentious about their music. While I have already said it is not exactly my cup of tea, I appreciate that it exists.
The way I look at it, if you want lyrics, read poetry... if you want social/political meaning, go get a newspaper or a newsweek or something, if you want virtuoso playing go find some 80s hair band or hardcore classical violinist, if you want soulfullness get some Hendrix or Janis or Dylan, etc...
Now if you want to jump up and down to a catchy beat and don't care about all of the above, just want to have a good time and see a spectacle of visual craziness with a beat and a chorus... that's what pop music is for! YESSsss! sez I....
I'm glad you had the courage to bring it up. Guilty pleasures. I have to admit, when I do my daily morning VH1 top twenty investigation (good to know what the enemy is doing) I always groove along when one of her ridiculous videos comes on. It's not that I think she's hot or anything although she does dress to show off the bod quite often, she's just not my type. I just love the amount of planning and the saturation of every possible angle of showiness and pop culture and obvious-chord-hooks and dancey beats that they manage to squeeze into them. It's as if someone found a comprehensive textbook on how to be a pop-star and followed it to the letter.

I'm not sure if that's an acknowledgement or an insult... those make for the best quotes and most interesting lyrics... I'm totally stealing that for my next song... "Basking in your defenseless rationality"... beautiful. "You're not as dumb as you look" was the last one, but that got old. Thanks. Whether you meant it or not (whatever 'it' is).

Not an insult at all! I just meant that you don't feel the urge to get all defensive and can take stuff for what it is. Mwahaha, I'm not a terrible lyricist myself Back in my high school days I would challenge my friends to give me a topic and I'd write radio-equivalent lyrics in 5 minutes or less. They didn't get why I was "so good" when ltitle did they realize their lyrics were so teribble. And just no.

It's ok KingCracker. I like that movie too. I don't like Gaga because every time I see her I mix it up with old Madonna things. I've heard a bit of her actually singing and assuming its not "fixed" through any of the tuning programs she is one hell of a singer. Such a waste. I didn't read through every post since it started getting all ragey I skipped ahead so sorry if I'm duplicating something :3.

No it is definitely 'fixed'. The miracle of technology runs the industry nowadays. As a sound techie myself I can totally hear it (unless you really believe she has 18 perfectly pitched vocal chords going at the same time...) It's called a 'Harmonizer' and it is the industry standard tool for pop music, everything from Gaga to Nickelback... If it ain't slop-rock and its going to be on the radio you better believe at some point some techie was sitting up late hours micro drop-and-paste and auto-retuning little bits and pieces. This is because pop stars really aren't about the pop star any more, they are just the spokesperson for teams of sound engineers, producers, marketers, and clothing lines. There's an aweful lot of 'fix' in there. The thing is, the best engineers know how to do it without making it sound like it was 'fixed'. Overproduce stuff and its obvious. Overproduce stuff well and it is what the audo-tech world calls 'transparent'... as in it got its fix, but you can't hear it so obviously.

Her album vocals have filters and junk, but it's for effect more than anything (and that's everyone nowadays). She always sings live though and with the exception of a couple of songs it's a clean vocal.

even a 'clean' live vocal is going through racks and racks of compressors, equalizers, live-sound real-time EQ correctors, reverb sends, the list goes on... just to sound 'clean'. I think that is part of the beauty of such an endeavor though. People need to get over petty indie grungy music snobbiness about sounding 'real' and appreciate how much effort is put into making miss Gaga 'sound' real.
I've played 2 shows in the last month. one show was just a guitar, amp, mic, and PA. It was mediocre. The other I had a sound guy to get the mic sound perfected with his rack of effects and it went over great. It still just sounded like a bare vocal and a guitar, but it was clear not muddy and I could hear myself in monitors so I could sing in perfect pitch, instead of just guessing at it and hoping for the best. The amount of rack gear that guy used to make the difference took up half of his (admittedly small) recording desk. If we can do that on the small club level, you better believe they can do that on the huge superstar level, and they'd be morons not to.

I value my own principles, and am willing to go to extreme lengths to enforce them, often trampling on the very same principles in the process. At best, I'm heroic and principled; at worst, I'm hypocritical and disorderly. |

One of the thing that makes her different is the lack of unecessary modification though. If you want to talk about compression and EQ as vocal effects then I'm afraid no one is innocent I look more at auto-tune, excessive reverb and the like as effects and the former as just making it not sound like crap. Nobody wants mic static or feedback when you oculd not have it. There are a couple YouTube videos of her playing smaller clubs and the power randomly going off. She keeps on singing without a mic and it's a powerful, pitch-friendly vocal that sounds exactly the same. I've played my share of shows and I used to sub for local bass players (not to mention playing roadie for several years just for the thrill) so we're on the same page. As technology improves it will get more and more that way though.
