Not really my cup of tea and the whole thing seems kind of over-the-top, but hey that's pop music for you.
It's a perfect formula put together by a board of directors (producers) and using some tramp-dressed chick with a kind-of-decent-voice as their advertising spokeswoman. Madonna got old, Britney went nuts, and so on... gotta find someone to fill the bubble-gum/trampy void, right?
I don't know how people can still think this. Yes, she has her "haus" that helps with the whole process but she has a hand in everything that happens. Her design process was directly copied from Warhol's factory with full intention (though I suppose he had his days of being called "not an artist" as well ). Again, research > assumption. If they really wanted someone generic to throw out there there are a lot better choices, just like if they were looking for nothing more than a slutty girl they could get one that doesn't purposely do androgynous or bizarre things.
Edit: This was my only mostly salvageable video from the evening. So good!

I looked at that photo album of all the fans and I just kept clicking out of morbid fascination. It's like a cross between something and something else I can't even describe the wonderfull/horrorifying feeling I got. Let's face it, some people have an I.Q. under 100... and other people get their own cheesy joke. Does anyone else think her target audience might be the former? It kind of reminded me of www.peopleofwalmart.com but with a better sense of humor and worse sense of fashion (and about as attractive)... still... when you press doomf doomf doomf on the drum machine with the same 3 happy chords looping behind it... sooner or later everyone will be jumping up and down like white kids at a rave. props to lady gaga... well played, you now have a voting base!
I'm both chaotic and orderly. I value my own principles, and am willing to go to extreme lengths to enforce them, often trampling on the very same principles in the process. At best, I'm heroic and principled; at worst, I'm hypocritical and disorderly.

Anyway, last year I went to a Kooks concert. Yeah, it was after 7 Heinekens in full sun but I had great fun and I don't regret it, neither do I feel tarnished by my shameless joy of pogo-ing to pop-rock music.
So as long as no one isn't actively forcing others to watch Gaga shows, I say let him be.

Again, research > assumption. I could easily attack metal by saying "when you hit enough random notes with too much distortion in order and vomit on the microphone for long enough someone will have to like it." Generalizing doesn't actually work.

Ha, I listen to a huge range of styles. I not only appreciate but actually really enjoy most genres. Most people are capable of enjoying a lot more than they do if they don't let stupid crap get in the way of it. Not that anyone has to like anything, but it's kind of ridiculous to act like they're incapable.

That's why I don't play metal. All general 'genres' (a word probablably derived from 'generalized') are pretty silly when you break them down to formulae, which they all can be victims of. Personally I like listening to sloppy out of tune dirt rock but even that follows the formula, just with the added touch of being (intentionally) rough around the edges. Very few musical groups any more can be truly origional without caving in to some standard of production and cheesy 3.5 minute songs and catchy chorus that can be recycled on a car commercial 10 years later... Pop music pretty much defines itself by its willingness to play right into that, instead of at least trying to look like its something other than what it is.

That's why her brand of pop is different. That's the whole point. "Pop will never be low brow" was an old rallying cry. She can play different genres, but they exclude people. Anyone can hear a pop song and enjoy it for what it is. Add some depth beneath the surface and suddenly you have something that people who want to dig can enjoy as well as somebody who just wants an excuse to dance. And some metal is really cool with some really good musicians behind it, so I wouldn't cut it out based on the annoying internet persona of it. When you say dirty rock are you talking new york underground glam rock and stuff of that nature, cuz if so I'm in love as well

but: regarding pop music (aka lady gaga) I think it is closer to Kiss as far as irrelevant stupid beats/riffs and stupid lyrics for people to jump up and down to. I am saying this as a compliment. It is well planned, well organized, and intended to SELL! These people in the crowd aren't stupid so much as just want to have fun and don't care to analyze how formulaic everything is, from the stage show, to the britney spears dance squad, to the Kiss fireworks, dumb outfits, redundant beats, cheesy computer-generated synths etc that all add up to a good time for people who just don't really care to look for anything deeper... they just want to have fun.. Pop does have a formulae that serves that up with a napkin and it's pretty obvious it is exploited. I'm glad people enjoy it, but it kind of brings out the worst in the creative element of our culture.

I have the discographies of all three of those bands, I got enthused, then I got over them. You should probably expand your music repertoire before insulting others, m83 has one good album, explosions meanders through a few of theirs and 65 is explosions with a DJ but significantly worse production value. Just because you had to go find your koolaid doesn't mean your glass is any less full of red fething sugarwater.

So, I was in this place people call the mall a while back. And I had the urge to expel some bad spirits. As I went into the bathroom, I chose the urinal closes to the corner so I could have some privacy. So I whip out Lord Pevincy and let him loose the bad spirits. Well, I was looking at the wall as the Lord was expelling the spirits and I seemed to have gotten distracted. Turns out, I missed a little.
SO I'm sitting at my computer right, and I have a Coke, Bottled mind you. But it got warm, so I got a Coffie cup and I filled it with the coke and some Ice and I sipped as I did my internet stuff. So like and hour passed and I hadn't sipped any of it. and when I go to sip it, I notice that something solid is in it. So I'm like, "No, why would there be something solid in my coke?" SO I pull these solid THINGS off my tongue and guess what they are? F ING ANTS! I was like WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And so I ran into the Kitchen coughing and what not and I threw those little bastards down the drain with a flood of hate and cold water.......those bastards are lucky I don't have my Nucians yet!!!

Took me a little bit to come around to Velvet Underground, but when they hit me they hit me hard. I loves them. I'll have to check out the others. They're Gaga-related but you might really enjoy Semi Precious Weapons and I'm guessing you'd like Mommy and Daddy assuming you can find both their albums. If you're interested I can throw the files up on Megaupload or Mediafire since they seem pretty elusive.
I don't think you can compare Gaga to the type of pop artists you're describing. Her songs have much deeper meanings. It follows the same patterna s modern art where it becomes more about the artist's intention than the art itself; fortunately the art is super addictive all on it's own. Her stage show is hardly formulaic, and I can back that up with the argument that if she wanted to be generic, there are MUCH easier ways. I don't know how much electronic-infused stuff you listen to but her beats are awesome quality (on par with the first t.A.T.u. album easily). Her fans, if anything, OVER analyze what she does as even her random public appearances tell part of the story. I can agree with what you're talking about, I just don't think you're talking about Gaga if that makes sense Thanks for the rational discussion.

Ra Ra oh ra ra Ga Ga oh la la. Yeah those are some deep, spiritual lyrics. Influenced by Marcel Proust maybe?
Come on man. You can totally like Lady Gaga and say shes good, catchy, talented, kitschy, whatever. Just dont try and tell me her songs have any deep meaning. Its pop music. Most of the songs Ive heard from her or any pop bands really are about wither breaking up or partying. You can say their good songs, as they are, but they're not deep. And im not trying to say that I listen to music that is deeper or something. I listen to a lot of House music, and there's absolutely no meaning to any of that stuff. Better to dance to in my opinion though.
I think Lady Gaga is so popular right now because shes incredibly smart. Shes tapped into a market, that I see at least, is a lot of Indie/Hipster girls and guys that while they like dressing the part of being Indie, dont really like the music. She's poppy enough to be successful, but shes just "edgy" enough to garner support from fans that like to think of themselves as different. Im not saying this is you mind.
Pop music makes so much money because, well its popular. Its catchy songs bereft of deeper meaning that people can enjoy without having to think about them too much. Shes a good artist because she's smart and knows what her fans want. Shes not a good artist because of the complexity of her art.
Its totally fine to enjoy a nice meal from Applebee's. Its good food. But don't try and tell me its fine dining.

@Dutch- Just because you dont see/feel/hear the meaning of 'something deeper' in her music doesnt mean it isnt there for other people. Different people can get different impressions from music.
Just like some people can look at art and 'see' all sorts of things, when in reality the piece looks like a dog licking its butt.

@MoM- I agree with you in theory, but where is the deeper meaning when many of your songs are about dicks and banging? Not exactly thought provoking material there.
I understand what your saying, but then where does the line between art and emotion fall? Is it art simply becuase it evokes an emotion? Or is it simple entertainment? The two are not mutually exclusive mind, but thats another topic.

Honestly I'm not a fan of GaGa, she has a few songs that aren't bad, but not really my cup of tea.
Still though, I respect her for being an actual artist in my mind, I've never gotten the feeling that shes doing any of the stuff she does to be particularly edgy or cool, shes just doing it as a form of expression, others will obviously have different views.
I read somewhere a while back that she spends basically all her money on designing outfits/shows, which is something I also greatly respect if true.
