Yes, i can be better.
Support the product and it will get better.
Especially since Codex is fronting all the money for the movie. if they make alot of money they will improve the graphics.

I think its possible to be a little disappointed about the CG while still be excited that there's actually a movie about the 40K universe that helps to add further detail to the universe; that may spark additional interest in all things 40k; and that may result in additional movies and the like.
Bright line standards certainly have their place in the world, but I think a little pragmatism may be in order. Lest we all be the D&D playing nerds who end up dateless on prom night because we were unable to recover from the blow of getting rejected by the head cheerleader.

Urgh... I was hoping the plot wouldn't be generic "Blue marines vs. Spikey Marines, and some of the Blue Marines feel the influence of EVIL!!!!1!"
So of course, this trailer kind of disappointed me. Hope that the actual move's story is better.
Grimm wrote:Why are Ultramarines so much better than the Black Legion, especially when most of them are 'New Battle Brothers' and the BL have had Millenia of experience. Seems a bit silly to me.
Because they're the good guys. Duh.
MajorTom11 wrote:Final Fantasy advent children was a straight to dvd small market outing too, it's not so much bitching as expressing dissapointment with a very poorly executed piece of CG, technically speaking. Haven't seen the movie, not going to review the story, acting or voice-overs, but based on this trailer, I am very confident saying that the animation, rendering, modelling and 2d visual effects compositing are 10 years behind the curve. Even made for tv serial cg cartoons look better....
On the other hand, I absolutely hated Advent Children, as it was pretty much an excuse to just go "LOOK WE HAVE PRETTY GRAPHICS AND THE MOST IDIOTIC AND POINTLESS PLOT EVER OOH SO EXTREME AND YOU' LL BUY IT BECAUSE IT'S FINAL FANTASY VII LOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!"
Final Fantasy: Advent Children could depend on sales because, well, it's Final Fantasy and people will buy anything with the title "Final Fantasy." The Warhammer 40K community isn't really the same.
Xca|iber wrote:I really think the wrong animation company was selected for this project. It very clearly retains the style of the studio's previous Bionicle films, which is fine for that genre/style, but doesn't translate very well to the 40k visual style.
Nah, the Bionicle films looked crappy too. Not just basic graphics-wise, but also crappy in some of the stupid errors that made it through; in one movie, the spider villains didn't ever actually TOUCH the webs, and were always walking on air.

indeed, we may not have gotten the Cheerleader, but the girl in the Chess club is kinda cute AND she is actually interested so yuou take here to prom. a girl who plays chess and is interested goes up about 3 points(out of 10) in hotness just for those factors.

I'm not too miffed on the character models but the Ultramarine's animations is quite robotic and they really could have done more there.
On the other hand, the voice acting and music sound great and there's plenty of violence and gore and the collector's edition stuff looks nice as well.
I don't really blame GW for not taking a risk on dumping millions on this project. More likely than not, they're testing the waters to see if there is a market for 40k movies because let's face it, tabletop gaming is a niche hobby.

That trailer was awsome! Sure the graphics weren't the uber-budget DOW2 intro graphics, but they were still damn good. I'd have been happy with a traditional animated/anime style movie, so a CG film is even better. Most important thing to me is that the movement was fluid, not jerky, and the violence has not been toned down (particularly like the Chaos Marine being hit in the head with the throwing axe). The faces are really good too. If the plot is as good as the action I'll be happier then a pig in muck .
Will be pre-ordering the collector's edition as soon as payday comes around.
....only slight fault I can find is that I would have preferred the Marines eye lenses to have been lit up, rather then dark. Does make them seem a bit odd.

Must say I am very interested in the dvd but it’s a little hard to shell out the money on blind faith. Is that what the finished product is going to look like or is that what they threw together just to satisfy the masses? I hope that they are doing a little more to polish the finished product instead of the trailer they released.

So it continues? I think we really should wait and see. Those that aren't impressed can hold on to thier cash and wait for those that are keen to review it. Simples. But the whole deriding it before there has been a review is rather redundent. GW have turned down offers from many companies to produce 40k films before. GW turned them down because they wanted to stay faithful to the product. They allowed one project to proceed (Bloodquest), it unfortunately didn't come to fruition. (Bloodquest the user posts here he was behind the project BTW) This is the same deal. GW allows a.n.other to produce the film at their cost (negating GWs risk), GW will retain control over the final product thus allowing them to ensure that the film retains the mythos/feel of what they want. Codex pictures releases the film (which is why it probably wont be in GW shops) at some point in the future Codex will pay GW a licsencing fee (if they already haven't done so). Done any other way you have the potential of a random film dragging the company down Railing against GW for not investing isn't accurate I think. They are a toy company and not an investor afterall, what do the know about film? I would suggest if they have okay'd the final product then this should hopefully be a good indicator. I guess what I am trying to say is that I think our energies would be better spent calmy waiting than just throwing random comments about, but intanetz an all that so: as you were.

Have you -tards ever heard of freedom of choice, or the balance of opinion? Why is it that anything negative = moaning?
If you guys are so bothered about hearing the opposite opinion, wouldn't it be best for you (and everyone else) to simply keep your precious "news" to yourself?

I'm afraid I hope that if there are more videos, that the contract goes to another studio. The low quality visuals are one thing, but the lack of standards controls are another. The fact I have spotted so many technical rendering errors in that trailer tells me that these guys just aren't that good. Throwing more money at them won't teach standards, you can have those at any level. I would never ever hire anyone who showed me a reel with this many errors in it. Ever, it's a super no-no.
That being said, there are tons of up and coming studios out there who do insane work to a budget, I say let them have a crack at it! I am somewhat at a loss as to how the 'Bionicle' guys managed to convince GW to let them do it when allegedly so many others have failed...
Anyways, I'm out of this one too, not much more to be said. The story isnt out yet and cannot be commented on or used as an excuse for the visuals (yet), the visual quality is now known and can be commented on.

Look the simple fact here is this movie is not up to current quality not by Hollywood standards not by HBO standards not by TV standards and not by video game standards. If you think other wise please enjoy this movie. The fact is this is not worth the money. If they wanted to do a movie cheaper they should have went with animation. I would have preferred a cartoon to this. At the end of the day crap is crap and this movie looks like crap.

Well, erm, thats kinda the whole point of my post. I'm all for disucssion. My post was aimed at those who appear to NOT want to discuss the movie.
Yes, I can see that many people are super stoked that "finally" a WH40K movie is being released, but that doesn't therefore mean we can ignore that other factors surrounding this release. To be honest, this "thou shalt not critique GW" isn't just evident here, it also appeared on the Dark Eldar thread.......
Its a sad day when products within the hobby can not be discussed on a web forum objectively and without the usual fanboism or "I hate GW no matter what" attitude.
However, like a waise man said, everything that needs to be said about this DVD has been said....

While I'm not impressed by the visuals (Though I'll admit, I did see the first trailer before this, so I wasn't expecting to be totally amazed), I have little doubt that Dan Abnett did a great job with the story. I'm also glad to see that, as was promised, there'll be plenty of blood, gore, and dismemberment. So much for the people that complained that "No doubt, it'll be PG-13 violence". I'll be buying this without a doubt. Not the special edition mind you, but I will be buying it. Regardless of visual quality, I've been waiting for a true 40K movie for 11 years. I'm not going to let visual quality hold me back from that. EDIT: And to everyone saying the movie stinks for looking bad, just remember the old Live Action films they used to play back in the 90's at Games Days. Bad acting, terrible animation, and hilarious foam costumes. Suddenly, this movie looks a lot better.

There is not one person who has commented on the story while expressing a negative opinion about what we have seen so far.
Not one.
Except those saying oh the visuals don't matter even though they suck, because the story will be awesome, based on nothing at all.
Let this enter your minds. THE STORY MIGHT SUCK TOO. Don't be so quick to assume the best, what the hell makes anyone so sure this isn't going to be a problem area too?????????????? JUST WAIT TIL YOU SEE IT BEFORE DEFENDING THINGS WE HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT!

I said I have little doubt, based on the fact that Dan Abnett is in charge of the Story. Looking through his Black Library work, there's plenty of reason to believe it'll be a decent story. SO WY DON'T YOU JUST CALM DOWN BUD OVERUSEOFEXCLAIMATIONMARKS! IF IT CAN BE SHOT DOWN AS A BAD MOVIE BEFORE IT'S OUT, WHY CAN'T IT BE DEFENDED AS A POTENTIALLY DECENT PRODUCT? I WOULD SAY THAT'S A RELATIVELY OBVIOUS DOUBLE STANDARD. AS HAS BEEN SAID, FOLKS HAVE FREEDOM OF OPINION. YOU CAN'T JUST TELL PEOPLE TO SHUT UP AND STOP SAYING GOOD THINGS ABOUT A MOVIE THAT ISN'T OUT UNLESS YOU'RE SAYING THE SAME THING TO NAYSAYERS. CAPS LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOCK! *Gasp* As for blind faith, I think it's less to do with that and more to do with the fact that people have been waiting since the early 90's for an official, full length feature. Now they've got it, and by damn if a few bad visuals are going to ruin it for them. Again, freedom of opinion. Some people aren't impressed at all and have based that choice entirely on what they've seen in previews. Some people are on the fence and will wait for reviews. And some people are just happy to finally have a movie after such a long wait. There's no reason why any one side should feel ill of any other. In the end, you're either buying it, or you aren't. That doesn't leave a lot of space to argue.

You've never seen a bad movie with good actors and a good writer? Seriously?
I'm an Abnett fan, but comics and movies do not make a script writer neccesarily. I think he will do fine, I'm just not saying it like I'm sure is my point.
The actors... meh... they are classics, but I'm not sure that they 'get' the material from the interviews. Again, I think they should do fine (though not my idea of SM voices) and convey emotion and delivery well. Again, just not saying it like it's a given fact already.
The big factor in this is that the director and editing are a huge factor on the pacing and tone of the movie. If they are from Codex, I think we are effed. You can give a painter the best paints and brushes in the world, doesn't mean the painting will be any good. And in this case, judging by Codex's standards on the visuals, and its not a style question, its execution and standards and consistency, I am very worried on how they will assemble the fine writers and cast's work.
And for the millionth time, I am not saying anything up or down about the story, because I don't know. I just ask, that everyone do the same when discussing the visuals, because it isn't relevant in the slightest AT THIS TIME. Don't tell us we are superficial for only looking at visuals and not story when right now, it's all we can look at! And even if the story is good, it doesn't mean it excuses poor work on the visuals. Jesus, we are consumers, spending our money, we are SUPPOSED to look at the thing as if we give a kak!
METALLIFAN - NO ONE HAS SAID THE STORY WILL SUCK, NO ONE!!!! THERE IS NO DOUBLE STANDARD, WE ONLY COMMENTED ON THE VISUAL QUALITY, AND THATS OUT THERE TO SEE RIGHT NOW! IF THE STORY IS AWESOME I WILL BE THE FIRST TO SAY SO, AND I HOPE IT IS!!!!!!! Please actually read my posts, and those of other's that have gone into detail and logical explanation as to why they are displeased on the following points: artisitically, financially, strategically and technically, before jumping in with your double standards talk. You did this on the last thread too and I am not trying to fight with you, I am trying to discuss. I am reading your thoughts and responding, please kindly read mine before responding so we can get somewhere. I clearly stated that this is just for me, my opinion, I THINK, and that if anyone else is ok with the visuals, that's great and it is a GOOD thing that they will enjoy the whole package hopefully, where as I am now just hoping for a good story. I have been fair, measured and clear that I am only talking for me and my views, and do not hold it against anyone to think otherwise, EXCEPT when they tell me I am a superficial whiner because the story is awesome and I shouldn't be so shallow. And the only reason that bugs me, is that there is no way for anyone to have an opinion on that YET. Please explain to me how anything I wrote above is even cause for an argument, or where I am wrong.

Look Abnett could write a fantastic story but when it gets made in to a screen play where moving pictures help tell the story are just as much a part of the story as the writing and those moving pictures are utter crap it will ruin the story.
