Visual doesn't necessarily mean it has to look pretty.
Really awesome action sequences in a movie fall under visual don't they?

It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. Just read that email... interesting bit of news in that second half.

"The ULTRAMARINES movie is only available as a DVD Special Edition Collector's Set - it is not for sale anywhere else - so, if you want to ensure you see it as soon as it is released on November 29 2010, place your order today."

It leads me to believe that there will not be a non-special edition DVD for cheaper.

i doubt they wouldn't release it as a normal DVD later. it doesn't make sound business sense.

i am 99% sure they mean the Collectors edition will only be avaliable for a short time.

Keep it civil. Unless you were one of the animators for this film, there's no reason to get personal about defending it. And even then take it to PM.

That's not a fair comparison. Because you havent paid for anything yet. The fact that no one got together and paid for this film to be made, mean yes, you can be grateful it has been. If you don't like it don't buy it, simple as.

Did you just tell us all to be grateful for getting anything at all? If you got served a bad meal with poor service at a restaurant, would you remind your gathered family to 'eat up cos there's folks starving in Africa that would be glad of this!'

Well... in the grand scheme of things, wouldn't that be true?

Anyway, it's not really the same thing. As has already been pointed out, this is Codex Films' first movie. Maybe I'm giving them too much credit, but I think that they more than likely made the best movie that they could within their budget.

I am not impressed by the visuals. Couldn't have they gone to Relic to make the animation? That intro from Dawn of War was awesome. But why didn't they go to them?? And I noticed the Voicing and the Model's faces. They talked about how they don't need points to film the expressions. The voicing doesn't sync up with the face movements.

Relic is a Computer game company not a film studio.

Game Intros are very expensive to produce(millions of dollars)

Relic, even though they do have the capital and software to produce something of high quality, will not be willing to take a risk on the magnitude of a 70 minute film. a smaller production company will be more willing as they have to to survive.

Relic also isn't set up for a film, but rather computer games.

I don't really blame GW for not taking a risk on dumping millions on this project. More likely than not, they're testing the waters to see if there is a market for 40k movies because let's face it, tabletop gaming is a niche hobby.

Who's even going to know about this movie other than people aware of it because they're already interested in the 40K world? It's a direct to disc movie in a limited edition run that doesn't seem interested in promoting itself to a wider audience, ie sci-fi and action fans. I truly hope the dvd will be available on its own at some point but it doesn't look good, I'm certainly not buying this over priced product as it stands. GW is not a charity and does not need my money to make better products in the future, it gets my money if it makes something worth spending money on and frankly, this is not even feature length and I wonder how good a movie plot you can get with such a short film.

I really don't see where you're disagreeing with me?

They're hardly testing the waters if they're only putting out a limited release bells and whistles version aimed at existing 40K fans. Testing the waters to me would be a plain arsed version (movie only) sold at a cheaper price and easily available from major outlets (including GW stores of course). What they seem to be doing is peddling a limited product to a niche audience at a premium price. How does that get themselves noticed by the wider sci-fi and action fanbase?

I saw a chainsword. The CSM had a few, and an Ultramarine had one, though he wasn't using it.
Thise bladed swords are power swords. They just don't look like it for some reason.

A.) From what I saw of the visuals, they are indeed maybe a little dated, but I wouldn't consider that to be a dealbreaker. Certainly not so much as the outsized price.

B.) I have to also say - I'm a little disappointed they went with Chaos. It's not that I don't find Chaos to be an compelling enemy ( I do) so much as it adds an element to the story best saved for a later story. This could be the first time people are exposed to this universe, and it's a little cheapening to, right off the bat, learn that Space Marines are superhuman, nearly unstoppable bulwarks of humanity... which are around 50% loyal in the right situation.

It would be better to have started them off with something a little less ethically vague, like Orks.

So I decided to purchase for multiple reasons.

1) As a comic collector - I just paid $24 for a trade paperback "Only war" that had visuals i loved, and didn't - but enjoyed a visual "fluf" storyline. I have been jones ingfor a straight up sci-fi animation movie (preferably better than roughtnecks!)

2) As I re-watched the trailer - I felt I was satisfied enough to play it for background in painting or gaming.

3) I am hoping to see more animated 40k movies - generally quality always increases, and even if it doesn't - I think it would be fun. Not ever model I paint is perfect, not every comic is gold, nor every book epic - but "fun" is really good enough for me.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh yeah - my order number is

100002505.

If that is the best the fan best the fan base can do - I am betting in a few years the Abdnett mini comic will be worth about 4 times the cost of the movie in a few years!

Does anyone know if the numbering changes by country?

Typically - if something is a "collectors edition", then there is/ will be a standard edition to compare it to.

I cannot imagine it not going to a standard edition some time. The opportunity to "present 40K" to the masses - in 80 minutes vs requiring 10+ fans, 30 books, and the internet is to good to pass up.

they haven't ever said they were going to release a normal version, BUT their wording of saying that the "Collectors edition will only be avaliable for a limited time" suggests hey will be releasing a normal version.

reason being that, if they were not going to they wouldn't have needed to specify that the "Collectors Edition" would only be availiable for a limited time. they would have just said "the movie"

"The ULTRAMARINES Movie is available only as part of the DVD Special Edition Collector’s Set..."

From the official site. It may mean that it will only be available as part of the special edition set for a short time, but I read that as meaning that it will only be available as part of the special edition set and that there will be no general release.
If the former is correct then it is badly written.

They've actually said it twice now. We were considering that possibility the first time, since they didn't express themselves as well that time.

If you haven't seen it, it's a German 40k fan fic featuring a bunch of IG desertees and hivers and PDF guys getting pulled by =][= to go investigate the underhive for corruption. It features Polymorphine, an awesome Tech Priest named Octavius (he's a right badass) radical Inquisitors and a lot more. Can be slightly confusing at points if you don't speak German, but very well done given their limited budget. Also, very dark, which is fitting for the universe. Don't be expecting a happy ending.

I'm fairly certain it got a cease and desist letter from GW, but it may or may not still exist if you know where to look.

How did you manage to watch it? Iv'e looked for it everywhere but GW have banned it because of copyright issues.

Perceived scarcity creates demand. If this is a new studio, they most likely need to cash in on the investment to stay solvent. Creating scarcity helps with both ends.

After 10 pages I felt inclined to write:

While the CGI isn't up to 2010 technological abilities, it's still better that the 40K movies we currently have to watch isn't it ?

I'm THRILLED to finally be getting a movie about my favorite hobby (I remember the Blood Angel movie that fizzled years ago). Would I have done it differently? Possibly ... if I had the funds, the time and the talent to do so.

But Jakebat (above) has it right ... this movie is for our entertainment ... it's for "fun". Is it ground-breaking? Only in that it is bringing our hobby to life in a movie and I think that's pretty cool !!

Hey, "South Park" isn't beautifully rendered but it's still a lot of fun. The proportions and style in "The Clone Wars" cartoons aren't what I would have imagined but it's still one of my favorites to watch. Not all artists pen their Sunday comics in the latest style but they still manage to entertain.

Ask yourselves how many first forays into ANY venture were perfect? I'd prefer a project move forward and lessons be learned for future work than having projects be abandoned for fear of even trying.

I hope there are more like me who are GRATEFUL for getting a 40K movie than those who are so disturbed by their perceived "failure" of the presentation that they "cut their nose off to spite their face" and miss out on what can still be fun entertainment and may very well lead into future, and better, offerings.
