Sorry dude, no offense, but if I'm going to spend money on something, I don't think 'it's crap but could be crappier' is gonna cut it. I'm pretty sure that it is not out of line or combative to say that, just sensible.
To each their own though, I would never try to talk someone out of enjoying something they enjoy, likewise, if they do enjoy it, I would not expect another's opinion to sway them.
Dammit, and I was really hoping it would be awesome sauce mild at the least, honestly!

One of the comments from the site on which the 2nd trailer was posted
I actually saw this trailer at the UK Games Day a couple of weeks ago, where producer David Kerney introduced the trailer and held a brief Q&A afterwards.
One of the key questions asked was why the CGI wasn't particularly great. Codex Pictures is essentially a start-up company that received zero funding from Games Workshop to help make the movie, so the implication was that anyone expecting to see top-end CGI is always going to be disappointed.
Personally, the CGI doesn't really bother me that much, as long as the story itself is up to scratch. The cast are of a high calibre so that shouldn't be a worry, so just have to wait and see on this.
In other words: Codex Pictures admits that their CGI isn't awesome at all, they could have done a better job, but you can understand the fact that if there is no money, we can't expect something like the quality of the DoW trailers which were generously funded by THQ...

Yes I can. I'm sorry but that just makes the whole thing even more dissapointing. If you guys want to see more 40k movies, you should give a crap whether or not the quality is good and that the movie suceeds because of it, not despite it.
Who knows if this movie flops whether GW will just go 'oh well that didnt work' and wash their hands of it?
This was a golden opportunity for both companies, and it sounds like they both are just making a grab for our money. GW sucks for not investing into it, and Codex sucks for putting out something they know looks low quality even compared to an xbox 360 game. CG is expensive but not quite as much as you guys may think. Mixing cg with live action is very expensive, cg on it's own doesnt have to be that bad. Look at clone wars, they cut a lot of corners, and churn out episodes, but they still make it look good because they thought out their work process and made choices and stuck to their standards!
I re-watched the trailer, and one part I noticed was a marine moving from dark to light, and his mouth grill never changes lighting, while everything else does. This is the most basic kind of quality assurance issue that just blew my mind about the many visual issues in the trailer. That they put that kinda thing in there just pisses me off, not for me, but for the guys working on it who will have to live with it professionally after this.
I would rather NOT be criticizing this, believe me. But something around clone war level, or at the very least beast machines, should not be considered way too high quality to be realistically expected in this day and age. Especially for a one off.

I, too, am disappointed by the visual quality. For comparison, I give you these CGI fan films:
Ultras vs. Necrons: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLankQDUBP4&p=12AA667B21C8EB74&index=9&feature=BF
Dark Angels vs. Tau: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0AiS8OPOL0&feature=related
Blood Ravens vs. Iron Warriors: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MGrI_s91IE&feature=related
I'd say that the animation level (if not necessarily the level of detail) is at least comparable quality in many aspects, and this is just something some dude did in his spare time to build his portfolio. I was really expecting more, what with all the fanfare. The gameplay clips of Space Marine for the 360 looks better and more natural than this, despite all the alleged motion capture and so on that they did for the film.
It's just not that good. This movie is the kind of thing that players should be able to show their friends to get them into the fandom, but the production values are such crap, it'd be just plain embarrassing to do so, and this is coming from a person who likes cheesy movies.

Making it a fanciful collector's item just re-enforces how much of a massive money grab this is, much like the more recent Space Hulk (though some actual effort was put into the character designs for Space Hulk). Limited edition collectible anything was played out with geek paraphernalia in the '90s. Only douchebags care about being one of only X people in the world to own something enough to pay extra money for it, the rest of us Warhammer fans would rather just have a good product available for a reasonable price.
Sorry for the rant, there, I guess I'm just disappointed and venting about it.

Yeah I mean it would be great to have both, but I actually think it shows some artistic integrity for a film to focus more on acting and story than visual effect when a decision has to be made based on limited resources.

Guys, there is NOTHING to say the story and acting will be good (or bad) either way as of yet.
I don't understand why in these threads people feel the need to say ANY person is right or wrong for liking something. If you like it, you like it. If you don't, you don't. I'm not going to get up anyone's arse and say they are crazy for thinking it looks good, good for them! But likewise others should stop saying anyone who isn't impressed is 'whining'. They just don't like it, doesn't mean we are teary eyed and asking the universe why it is so cruel while we type.
Likewise for unnecessary exaggeration that derails actual discussion or evaluation, saying 'Oh! But they did an amazing on story and unlike you other shallow guys, I appreciate this Shakespearean and moving piece that will surely win an Oscar for the script above oh so superficial looks' is a bit extreme, we don't know the story. What we do now know with some authority is where the visual benchmark is.

Who's idea was it to get Abnett in on it? Not being snarky, I really don't know.
I'd assume that Codex said "Hey, Abnett, come over here and write for us." If that's true, then GW very indirectly invested in the movie; they let their best author work on it.
If it was GWs idea (unlikely) than I'd say Mr. Abnett is worth a few thousand dollars at least. If that wwere the case then GW directly invested in the movie.
Abnett obviously isn't at GWs beck and call, but he must have got their permission before writing the script, just as Codex would have had to have gotten GW's permission to make the thing in the first place!

Most likely they allowed the use of the IP in exchange for a percentage of the returns from the sound of it. No risk.
For Abnett, a few thousand is nothing when it comes to the overall budget, at the barest minimum, this thing cost several hundred thousand in simple wages for Codex, the actors and the audio guys alone.
Even a cheap movie ain't cheap! At least to normal people financial standards... To another movie the budget woulda covered the craft table and painting J-lo's trailer white lol

My first foray onto the internet was via an animation site called Spacebattles.com. It was a website devoted to, you guessed it, making 3D animated films of space battles. Several years after I started going there the quality of the animation rivalled a lot what you were seeing in movies. Now, by today's standards it is dated, sure, but it was impressive nonetheless.
The animation at Spacebattles.com is better than the animation in Ultramarines. The Ultramarines animation is jerky, too quick in places, sparse in detail and real grittiness, and as people have said it looks like the animation a 1st year animation class would do. If anyone has been able to see what the DAVE animation school do, their stuff is better than this.
Yes, I have pre-ordered it because I want to support this venture in the hope that it will improve, but I'm not going to pretend its the greatest thing since sliced bread. Even if it is a good movie the trailers indicate that it is a poorly animated movie and I really wish they had gone the whole hog and jus thad Blur Studios do the movie. Looking at their work for KOTOR Online... just breathtaking.

Agreed wholeheartedly. This movie may suck royally but GW will probably make money off it and be of the mindset of "well hey at least we made enough cash to make a profit, lets put out another one". I think we should as fans of 40K demand better than a "oh well we did what we could with minimal standards".
