Also down to opinion, like this whole thread is.
I think terminators are amazing. You think they're not badass enough.

The original necron lord and the rest of the original necrons are of the worst. A whole army of these faces. How are you supposed to take them seriously? Even more so, how did they ever get approved for production? They look like a 3rd grader designed them!

Could not disagree with the OP more. Sisters models are pretty awesome, and making them look like female marines would have been terrible. Now they do need some plastic, since they tend to rely on numbers and my armycase weighs a metric ton. If sisters ever do get plastic, they will likely be more marine like, since they really can't get the level of detail that the current sister sculpts have.

Sisters repentia on the other hand, are awful, and were completely useless. Now they are okay if they can steal a transport, but still not good.

You go back as far as I do, then all the "new" races look terrible.

Back in the old days, everyone modeled their own Dark Eldar, insisting that there must be Dark Eldar since Fantasy Battles has Dark Elves. Then, when the Dark Eldar finally came out, a lot of people wished they hadn't. The Dark Eldar, as a whole, have always been pretty silly in their description, and their models more or less uninspiring. For me, the Anime Mecha League, er, sorry, Tau Empire have always just seemed like a shameless rip off of anime stuff designed to sucker in new players. Which, I guess makes sense since 40K never really had a single unique idea. Why not have the Anime Mecha League? And Necrons were better before they became a complete army too. Or maybe better never being born.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

Because it was the mid 90s and everything looked goofy as hell. A lot of the "worst sculpts" in this thread are just really dated models from a time when things looked really, really cartoony. The only 40k models that I think were completely unacceptably bad for their time were the metal Possessed:

Considering about 6 months later the current (very good) plastic kit came out, it always struck me as odd.

Then they should be updated. If grey knights can be so detailed in plastic then captain khorne on his tonka triceratops I posted above should no longer be available for purchase. I know its expensive to redo the molds but if a model is beyond ugly, I would not buy it even if it was good. I dont know if thats just me but if I spend money, it had better look good sitting on the table.

If you "get" orks, you realize they have the absolute best models in the game. If you don't, their stuff looks silly.

So true, especially in the days when 50% of the units in their codex was made from the same box. Seriously Slugga boys, shoota boys, skarboys, 'ard boys, flash gits, lootas, ect. They used to all be made my modding a box of basic boys (and stikkbombers were a waste). Until the new codex came out, they didn't even make boys with big shootas (at least none that I could find while I was playing orks). People who started playing Orks recently never realized that those of us who did it before 5th edition didn't even have models for several units, and had to mod almost everything.

Well, that hasn't really changed all that much. Ardboyz are still up to the modeler, skarboyz don't exist, stormboyz have new models, lootas just have different guns on the same bodies, and stikkbommas rightfully don't exist in the same way. There were big shoota/rokkit/burna models in 3rd ed, but they were metal. Vehicles back then though, that was something else. Almost no kits whatsoever and pretty much everyone had to make due with conversions.

Oh, how I wish they were! If Ragnar Blackmane could get a model that wasn't older than 50% of this forum the world would be a better place. That old school donkey model could definitely be redone with either the current Warriors of Chaos juggernaut lord or a plastic bloodcrusher and Khorne Berserker.

I like all the rest of the Ork arsenal, but I imagine the conversation when the first Stompa was build went something like this:

Mek 1: We'z gotta get one a dem big 'umie walkers, stomp em all up!
Mek 2: Yeah! But it's gotta 'ave loads of dakka too. Big rokkits and stuff.
Warboss: WHAT IT NEEDS IS A SKIRT

Yes! Even chaos lords want their own battlecat equivalent. That model is so old, when it was brand new people only had 3-4 teeth. Thats far back on the evolutionary ladder I'm sure. But anyways in all seriousness, who said those oblong horrible skulls with 3-4 teeth were ok for production.

If you are going to run this guy, you should just mod a Khorne Chaos Lord on a juggernaught from WHFB.

If I'm going to spend 50ish bucks on a single unit, the damn thing better not need me to cut it apart it and then remake it. Can I rebuild him? I have the technology but not the desire. Theres a standard that most companies are held to. Unfortunately due to GWs lack of solid competition, they do whatever the hell they want. Imagine if a computer company updated their systems once every 6-10 years. They would fail almost immediately.

I'm telling you, modify a plastic bloodcrusher. It has the potential to look boss, and you get three in a box for like $45. Or just get one on a bits site and go hog wild.

I know I prefer the WHFB Jug though. Just sayin' I shouldn't have to make my own. There is a fantastic jug model that would be simple to make a chaos 40k lord for and they just cant be bothered.

Whats with all the 80s hating? Thanks to the power of hindsight, they do look bad, but 99% of the sculpts from back then were bad. Things that I dislike would be:

Scouts. The artwork from all the codexes these apear in make them look very cool, and with a little conversion work they make excellant models. But a little head variation would be nice.

Any grey knight with no helmet on, or duel weilding swords.

The possessed are great models with awful rules, Berserkers are merely okay. The new Bloodletters look like updated 80's Bloodletters and don't look generic like the 3rd/4th ed ones. New Necrons are fine for the most part, I don't know what your problem with them is outside of the Flayed Ones.
