I like where you are going, but me and my shambling buddies would fear a compound bow the most. A crossbow needs to be reloaded, and gunfire is a dinner bell.

Now, silenced .22 may be the ultimate weapon. Machete for backup, too.

Anyone else excited for The Walking Dead starting up again? Darryl from tv series and the female warrior from the comic are my two faves, so this does greatly influence my opinion on anti-zombie weaponry.

I am excited.

I am a proponent of .22LR of course. Not particularly loud even unsuppressed and plenty good for shambling zombies.

Ai, but don't you have to be fairly close in order for it to be effective? I'd prefer to be as far away from the gits as possible, hence my preference for bows, crossbows and silenced rifles, preferably with sub-sonic hollowpoints (if those exist...)

Silenced rifles?
A .22LR scoped rifle will be Z headshot accurate at 100 yards. Thats better than crossbows and bows in practical conditions. If I miss, just fire again.
Remember, if they are shamblers, you can take your time and do fun stuff like play loop de loop with them around a house.

the lethal effective range on a .22 ia almost a mile and a half (although you REALLY gotta arch em)

yes sub sonic hollow points DO exist, but we test them at about 518 FPS, and my Air rifle shoots more than that.

all of this entirely depends on the manner in which the infected are/can be destroyed.

severed head stops the body, simply remove heads and put in a metal container, set on fire.

speaking of fire, how effective is it? if it works, napalm. everywhere and everything.

id the head must be split open and brain destoyed, a .22 will not be very effective. in that instance, .223 is likely your best bet. ammo is abundant. also don't forget shotguns, ammo is EVERYWHERE. close range with target load to remove the brain, but still ammo is plentiful.

Crossbows are NOT silent. but they are quieter than most unsurpressed firearms (hint, unsurpressed)

lastly, it all comes down to the zombie.

Night of the living dead zombie (aka animated dead): noise makes no difference, only sight and smell. slow moving, no tools, no cognitive thought, low strength, flesh not required to move. must be bitten to turn. (NOTLD 3 says there is a gas that can reanimate the already dead)

28 days later Zombie (aka Zoombie): blood infection, all senses active, impervious to pain, fast moving, ability to use tools and think, flesh required, internal organs not. blood pathogen based, any scratch open wound sore or bite.

Omegaman (also I am Legend) Zombie (aka vampire zombie): succeptable to light, memories and thought in use, cognitive thought, fast moving, tool capable impervious to pain. killed by stopping vital organs. any wound causeing exposed flesh, blood not required, any bodily fluid.

Resident Evil Zombie (aka mutated people): all senses active and heightened, impervious to pain, fast moving, super strength, succeptable to flesh wounds and kill shots. blood borne pathogen, requires bite or direct injection/wound

Walking Dead Zombie (aka modern zombie) animated flesh, headshots only to kill, basic brainstem required to animate, flesh required to operate joints, limited tool capability, limited memory, medium/low speed depending on bodily condition, strength is moderate, all senses active

Crossed Zombie - Technically not a zombie, as they are not dead. Human infected with a virus, that turns them into a psychotic killing machine, with no absolutely no restraint. Think Dark Eldar crossed with the Reavers from firefly but worse. Capable of speech and using tools, vehicles and firearms and are very, very sadistic, killing and maiming for fun, usually in cruel and unusual ways. Known to coat bullets with bodily fluids in order to infect targets. Incapable of advanced planning and strategy due to their insanity, preferring to rush head long into their victims, usually mocking them in perverse ways. Can die like everybody else, but they are HIGHLY pain resistant, and will keep on coming even after getting disabled. Proceed with caution, make sure they are dead, and kill anyone you suspect may be infected (but hasn't turned). A single crossed could potentially wipe out/ infect a whole group of survivors.

And what ever you do, do not let them take you alive. They will have.."fun" with you before eventually killing/infecting you.

God dammit Garth Ennis...

Necromorphs

Corpses infected by alien virus. Exact process unknown. Possible BS on EA's part
Have a bizarre fetish for vents, and known to camp in them at all times. Due to this predictable behavior, it is possible to mount a reasonable counter attack.
Do not aim for the head and chest. Limbs must be removed to ensure killing them.
Again, the reason why is unknown, once again probably BS

Well a prison wouldnt be a bad place if cleared out really. Just remember that water doesnt affect any zombie (minus a virus zombie of course) they simply sink, and walk to the other side. But like I said, a prison, definitely would/could keep anything out, not just zombies

In all honesty, that would be the absolute, perfect fortification. The only problem would be keeping it from rusting out, because we have to do constant maintenance to keep our ships afloat from the waters. But still, kudos on that effort.

except once you run out of fuel because they SUCK diesel, it will drift and you'll have no control over it and you'll run aground.

Alcatraz. isloated rock, 12 foot tall walls near 2 feet thick, easily defendable, enough land to grow crops, large city near by to raid if you had to.

as for the water, well, alcatraz has a constant current so if a zombie were to try to walk there they would be swept out into the bay. so highly unlikely they would get there.

more to the point, they aren't undead, they're zombies. they lack the focus to pusth their bodies (this isn't pirates of the carribbean here)

a large ship wouldn't be bad as per, but the long term logistics don't support salvation, just temporary relief.

Without substantial training, a bow is going to be useless past 40 yards or so if you need a head shot. A .22 will be effective with less training at further range than that. Also, thinning out hordes? Unless you've got enough arrows to kill all of them, good luck getting any back; you want to avoid them anyhow, sniping zombies is going to be generally pretty pointless. Besides which, I'M not going to be handling any zombie-virus sharps just for a few more shots.

You ever been to Alcatraz? One of the reasons that Alcatraz shut down was the cost of shipping supplies to the island. That includes fresh water, because there's none on the island. NO FRESH WATER THAT ISN'T A LONGISH BOAT RIDE AWAY. Ponder that.

Here's something specifically on the topic.

http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/page/Alcatraz+Island

Personally, I think these exercises inevitably tend to overrate the need for fortresses and guns and underrate the need for a massive amount of food and supplies.

Alcatraz. isloated rock, 12 foot tall walls near 2 feet thick, easily defendable, enough land to grow crops, large city near by to raid if you had to.

as for the water, well, alcatraz has a constant current so if a zombie were to try to walk there they would be swept out into the bay. so highly unlikely they would get there.

more to the point, they aren't undead, they're zombies. they lack the focus to pusth their bodies (this isn't pirates of the carribbean here)

a large ship wouldn't be bad as per, but the long term logistics don't support salvation, just temporary relief.

Personally, I think these exercises inevitably tend to overrate the need for fortresses and guns and underrate the need for a massive amount of food and supplies.

yes, I have been to Alcatraz. I live near San Francisco. so i'm well versed on the climate in this area (born and raised Bay Area native)

are you familiar with de-salination? have you ever considered removing the salt from the watter in the ocean THAT ITS SITTING IN! its not impossible to make salt water drinkeable you know.

not to mention a constant supply of fish in the ocean and the surrounding wildlife in the area.

and yes, row-boats work just fine on a small crew.

No, no. Spiderman or the Incredible hulk. they were humans exposed to various forms of radiation.

Superman is a fething alien. *rolls eyes* Zombie amateur!

Kronk, your a gem

As for the container ship, who cares if it sucks diesel, I was thinking more like, dropping anchor and sitting a ways out from shore. Youll need supplies to survive, and you wont find fire wood out on the sea
