And Colorado isn't bad. Its the drive from Topeka Ks to Denver CO that would kill you. There isn't a single thing all the way. Besides an adult super market. There are plenty of trees, but that is it. And the reason behind higher crime rate in London over New York city, Is because the criminals don't live in New York city, Even they know better than that. They just come in on the week ends do what they need to do and leave.
Speaking of New York city, It could have the lowest crime rate in the world and would still be a crap hole. Have you seen pictures of it? You can't drive any where because of the traffic. Every where in half the city is high end places that no one can afford. And not to mention, Ever see a Wal-Mart in new york city? I haven't seen one yet. And if a city doesn't have a Wal-Mart, Its not worth going to or living in!

Worst in the world?
Mogadishu - No real govenment and violent as hell
Cape Town (In SA, a supposidly "first world" country). Violent with massive poverty
Grozny (Again, in Russia, a first world country) Bombed to hell after many years of war
Karachi. Pakistan has all the problems of India with non of the good bits. War on its boarders, internal violence and Karachi is a distilled version of the rest of the country.
Finaly:
Detroit (From what I have seen parts of Detroit look like a war zone). Poverty, violence, gang problems. People may have been saying "oh look at us and our western problems" but parts of the US are very violent.
London & New York are nice places (for a given value of nice). And FYI the violent crime rate in NY is not that high, and has not been since the mid 90's. http://www.disastercenter.com/crime/nycrime.htm
Also, whilst the UK is not the bastion of politeness some in the US seem to think, nither do we have the problems people from the UK seem to think. Thanks to the way policing and govenment is funded in the UK we do not have the funding problems parts of the US do. Because they have a direct link between local funding and local tax a poor area can quickly sink in to a spiral of distruction where less money is raised in taxes, so less is spent on police, roads, sanitation etc, so the well off move out, so less taxes are raised etc etc. In the UK we do not have this link.

1) If you're in a major city (New York, Paris, London, Chicago, etc) and are driving, that's your problem. They all have amazing mass transit systems. Use those.
2) Yeah, there's a lot of expensive housing in New York. But, that's because it's really nice and because the people there make enough money to afford it.
3) Wal-Mart isn't a good thing. It's low-quality merchandise for cheap.

Manhatten (which is what most people mean when they say New York) you can walk most places, never mind mass transit. It's only 13 miles x 3 miles, and the top 4ish miles (north of 125th) don't have much you would need unless you live there, in which case you are already there. I'm sure there is Wal-Mart in New York, and there is definatly cheep housing, just not in Manhatten. Any place without a Wal-Mart is a good thing in my eyes.
If I had the money I would get a house in London, a flat in Rome and have a motorbike in each for when I wanted to go a long way, and cycle/walk the rest of the time.

The problem is, many people think Detroit is the worst city in Michigan/US, but MANY will argue that Fint, really is worse. Heres an article from last year
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/17/magazine/mag-17YouRhere-t.html?_r=1
As before Flint Crime
http://www.cityrating.com/crime-statistics/michigan/flint.html
And Detroit
http://www.cityrating.com/crime-statistics/michigan/detroit.html
They look pretty similar ya? Well heres the scary part, these are the best guesses of population in 2008
Detroit 912,062 (2008)
Flint 112,900 (2008)
So nearly 9x the population over Flint, Id say Flint is much more violent then Detroit

Merthyr Council built a tourist information center so that strangers could ask for the quickest way out of town. This lowered the crime rate until someone burned it down.

No hate here, but I think you're in the minority on that one. Chicago is a great city, but it has its own vibe much like NYC and LA have their own vibes. If you don't like the vibe, you don't like the city. However, Chicago most certainly does not belong in a worst cities conversation that also involves Detroit. The two are worlds apart in every measure.

All gets left to personal thoughts on the matter. I can tell you right now that both are pretty dumpy places when compared to other places.
I just realized that best city to live in. And that city is Lawrence KS, And I know this is the worst cities in the world, But i just got to mention that in the mist of all the tornadoes, Lawrence hasn't been hit by one, and the violent storms we where suppose to get turned out to be a little wind and some rain. Where as 30 mins away got hit, and is no longer standing.
Personally i think the worst cities should be ranked by what pizza they have. And if they don't have pizza they aren't counted because with out pizza it might as well be considered hell on earth. Whos with me?

After much back and forth over the VHF radio, and being told the Pilot had left an hour ago, we watched as past the breakwater came a small rowing boat being rowed by a pair of skinny little Somali's, against a good swell from the Indian Ocean. Hilarious. I have never been anywhere the pilot was rowed out to a ship. It's the 21st Century for Christ's sake. We sat about 1nm off the Breakwater and it was like the Wild West, there was so much gunfire all over the city it was like an Arabic Wedding. No one shot at us, although a few armoured vehicles aimed their turrets at us and when a Warship aims it's main gun/guns back at you, your bottle tends to go and you make for cover. Good times. On topic, it's not a City its a bloody mess.
