Made some progress. Twilight Cloak is not as far along and will most likely (read:almost certainly) not be finished in time. This guy should make it, though.

Time to start thinking about wrapping things up! Also a friendly reminder that depending where you live and the weather, the 31st might be hard to sit down and get some quiet painting done. You may have all sorts of little adorable ghouls and goblins ringing your doorbell at odd hours...

I’ve done Judge Dredd, but he was far too fair and balanced…

It’s time for a genuine champion of virtue, fairness and justice to take center stage. May I present, his right honourable Grand Justice Gormayne.

Truly, never has such a stalwart defendant of sanity ever graced these forums…

Struggling about in Asmos territory.

It's a really good paint and cool entry but I kindof have a gripe/confusion with putting an othalan rune on his cape, considering that is literally the rune of the Sun.

No need for confusion… I simply have no idea what the runes mean or symbolize and painted them based on how much I liked the shapes. I mean, maybe by sun it is meant ‘black sun’ or something. Errr…

I just looked it up and a search is saying the rune is associated with ‘heritage, estate or possession’

Now I am confused…

I personally also love the rune, that's probably why i felt that so strongly seeing it on a ghoul, I've contemplated getting it as a tattoo in fact.
Some call it the homeland rune but in reality it is depicting the Sun and its emenation (the triangular part under the diamond (adamas) shape) which is often seen in ancient (and modern) symbology concerning the creator entity (the Sun to ancient cultures).

Modern renditions would be the pyramid and eye of providence on top, other ancient versions are the Horagalles (correctly written Thoragalles actually, meaning elder-Thor), the shigir totem and so called Ostara/Spring poles such as the Asherah pole of fertility/nature, like the maypole.
It is always a symbolic depiction of a pole, tree, mountain or hill' with the Sun on top.

Hmm, perhaps your ghoul judge has it as a troglodyte representative of surface authority, or he ripped the skin off someone who did, thinking it carries over that way.

edit: to soothe your own confusion The Othala rune is considered the rune of origins and is Tyr's (the earlier version of Thor) personal rune.
Tyr is a primal sungod, like Thor' (often confused as a stormgod, while lightning is a Solar aspect in mythology, and many Sungods had lightning aspects, take Perun/Perkunas, Enlil, Teshub, Tharapita(literally meaning thors lightning) and Tarhunt for instance, and in other versions generally associated with comets, meteorites or sometimes even a dualistic moon state such as Thoth, Sin (Su.En) and Iah (all three the same entity mind you).

Anyway, as Tyr refers to the Sun, the Othala's origin centric depiction is easily read in the syncretism of the aforementioned examples of the Tharapita mythology (wooden hill on which "he" stood and fell from) or the Shigir totem and Eostre/Ostara fertility poles.

considering this thread is at its end anyway thought to elaborate a little, admittedly fueled by my obsession with symbology, one of my main studies.

Well it’s clear you love the subject. I’ll have to message you the next time I need to paint some freehand runes on a project for ideas! In the meantime, I will come up with a bit of suitable lore for this character..

That doesn't look like any Eldar model I've ever seen...

Now showing various models from the previously adandoned projects!

Painting total as of 3429/2024: 56 plus a Deva King statue
Painting total as of 12/31/2024: 107 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain and two walkers and a quad mech and five giants

I can do Eldar if you want? I just figured I would get on theme, I have eleven old figures from the Necromunda range that just showed up, and I figured an axe murderer was a better choice.

Cheers,

CB

Well if you want ideas thats fine, it wasn't criticism or anything, if you had painted a flower and rainbow on his cloak that would've been just as confusing

The deacon said you should definitely paint the humble brother who is not an axe murderer by the way because carrying out the Emperor's justice is not murder is what the deacon said and if someone knows about such things, it's the deacon!

Just to point out, I don't know if there even are any undead in AoS that take exception to sunlight. Vampires in Warhammer Fantasy do, because Nagash is an ass, but that's still not a universal undead or undead-adjacent thing.

Flesheater Courts even has the Blisterskin faction whose thing is that they are explicitly sun worshippers (and have the tan to show for it). There should be nothing confusing about an AoS Ghoul wearing a sun rune.

You’re right about that! Flowers and rainbows certainly have no place on this guy! I think it’s cool you are our resident expert on runes though, given our hobby it’s a useful pool of knowledge to tap into

You know, I was actually thinking I’m not sure a ghoul would have the same aversion and contempt of the sun as his vampire overlords. Thanks for pointing this out!

I was worried my misguided use of the runic symbol in question might start a great controversy. Henceforth we shall refer to this incident as ‘Runegate’

Seriously though, I should probably have at least looked a little into what they meant.. lol

Didn't know that, I guess its a blisterskin judge then

Can he be an ex-blister skin who defected to Hollowmourne? Over time his skin has transitioned back to its original beautiful green hue…

He was probably part of a judicial exchange program and got the robe as a gift, which is definitely not code for bribe.

How much of that is accurate may be a matter of debate. Ghouls aren't right in the head, or so some jealous agitators claim.

I'm calling her done. Finished at ~2am last night.
There are areas that I have reworked half a dozen times and I could keep reworking them again and again.
So sometimes it's better to call it quits while you are still having fun.

I did not manage to finish the backdrop in time, as the parts I need have not arrived yet and I don't have time to paint for the rest of the week.

Finished pictures: Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower:

On the last two busts I did last spring I tried to make everything as smooth as possible, hurting the overall impression and contrast.
This time, I wanted to keep some of the brush strokes and texture very much visible and aimed a rough overall look.

When the postal order arrives, I will mount the bust on a better plinth and most likely paint a small background for it.
Aaand I'll most likely revisit a few small details that I'm seeing now when I look at the pictures. Such as her ears, which I kind of forgot to repaint after messing around with the hair

That's a Necromunda model? I would have thought Mordheim. I look forward to seeing the finished product.

Also, all of this talk of runes sounds familiar. I sort of have the same reaction when I see kanji used incorrectly. I make a point of reminding myself that they are being used as design elements, just like the wacky English you so often see here.

I have never actually played either game. I never would have imagined that a dude with a giant axe would be running around the underhive.

The other Zealot miniature packs an eviscerator. But sometimes you just have to go with the budget option. Credits don't grow on chemical vats.

Just like you'd expect to find the more medieval visual elements in the Imperium on members of the Ecclesiarchy, that's the look House Cawdor and Redemptionists got as the pious factions of the game.

There have been times I posted the challenge thread early, but only if I’m going to be AFK for the 1st. November should go up tomorrow morning as normal.

It actually went better than expected and the main model is mostly done. I don't think I will have enough time to finish the base properly but I will drybrush some paint to have a "complete" entry.
I should be able to upload the photos by tomorrow morning.
