The Marine Standing Behind Marneus Calgar
|
Welcome all to the 116th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.
This month is our annual Halloween Special. Spooks, spirits, ghost, goblins, monsters, kids dressed up trick-or-treating, costumes. Pumpkins and changing leaves. It’s spooky time here in the painting challenge, so break out the pumpkin spice flavored paint and get with the season!
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You may enter at any time during the month, up to the last minute. We do encourage people to enter early, as to be part of the community, but if you can’t start until the 11th hour, that’s OK.
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of October and will end at midnight EST on October 31st. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Going to try to buckle down and get through as much of my nighhaunt as I can, pick the best 5. There is a little more in the to-prime pile, but getting this done (minus the cairn wraith kitbash) would be the spearhead when combined with what I have already.

Hope this is spoopy enough for you, it is for me.
Harlequin are perfect for spoopy hi weensicals, they already wear masques.
Oh and ofcourse the grand masques I already entertained are also perfect for this chal; Silent shroud and shattered mirage.
Been kitbashing the vehicle a bit already, basecoated it today and did a little on the ship but not enough yet to photograph again.. so here's the proof pic instead.

For this contest I will be doing a "Nagash's chosen horseman" probably a Sleepy Hallow, Headless Horseman" kinda deal with a spooky diorama. Will also try and have some proper scaling.

I'll be painting this version of the Scooby Gang, from Black Site:
I'll probably also paint the Mystery Machine, but it would take me over the 5-model limit, so it's not part of my entry

It's likely to be 5 of these for the Hallowe'en edition:
The Mascareri, mystical mask makers of Venice. Each can imbue the powers of a faction into a mask for the wearer for one night. How very seasonal I do have a massive vampire beastie also but it's still in bits and I'd need to do it in secret as it's a surprise for my eldest's birthday.

Kingdom Death minis for Halloween. The Watcher and Twilight Cloak are the main entry. Twilight Witch and Bone Eaters are stretch goals, as I would like to see them done, too. Let's see how that turns out.

Not 100% sure of my entry, but I'll throw in my current idea: Lady Maria from Bloodborne.
An old hunter of the Healing Church, she has battled the most horrible of beasts and aberrations, both gothic and lovecraftian.
Proof picture. Showing the intended direction of light.
After an hour or so of rough sketching.
We'll see how this turns out. Way out of my comfort zone.
Might change the entry, might not. Too many projects ideas rushing through my mind haha.

I found a load of Tomb Kings skellies on eBay and in that lot there was this one LOTR horse so, needing a mounted Lyche Priest I built this to look like he makes the sand rise up to be his horse.

Oh I like the sand horse concept! Very nicely done.
The Sump Abomination is coming along... still some green stuff left to add to hide some of the joins and rough areas where straps were carved off

Clowns work. Especially murder clowns.
I wonder how many people read “Harlequin Avatar” and their brains immediately went to the giant metal boy (or the new swirly one) done up in motely? Do they even use that term anymore? I’ve got a pair of them standing in for warlocks on my shelf.

Very original idea. You could do something with this with all sorts of animal statuettes (plenty of toy cobras to find I'm sure )

I never liked the whole murder-clown idea (I say while doing harlequins but hear me out), Retro halloween took the cake for me, bedsheet ghosts, witches with a black cat and broom, pumpkins and cobwebs..
Halloween really got dunked on the moment people started walking around like michael myers or kruger, and now with the 'terrifier' theme costumes its really gone off the rails.
(I know, offtopic, had to get off chest)

Yeah let's call it a day and give Ezki the win already, saves us some neckpain under the paintinglamps.
OT: will make a wip pic when I get home today, did some more work on the ship but need some ardcoat (ordered it) to go on with it (making patterns on it without feeling like I may destroy what I've got going so far) -_-
Also did a little bit on one of the passengers, but have been busy taking some other things off my list (unrelated to WH) so that I can focus better on this proj that I really want to enjoy more because its my favorite theme of the year.

The month is young. We don’t have all the entries yet. And while some might fight for the podium, while some of of fight for “not last” we all fight the good fight against the Pile of Shame and the Grey Menace.
